Racism is increasingly recognised as a key contributor to poor mental health. However, the existing literature primarily focuses on its effects on adults.

To identify literature on the association between experiences of racism and mental health in children and young people in the UK.

Inclusion criteria were: (a) peer-reviewed publications containing original data; (b) UK-based research; (c) included examination of associations between mental health and experiences of direct or indirect racism (quantitative or qualitative); (d) inclusion of an assessment of mental health outcomes; (e) participant ages up to and including 18 years of age or (if the range went beyond 18) with a mean age of 17 years or less. Six databases were searched between 2000 and 2022; an initial 11 522 studies were identified with only eight meeting the inclusion criteria.

Five of the identified studies provided quantitative data and three provided qualitative data. The majority of studies (7/8) focused on children and young people aged 10 years and over; only one focused on children under the age of 10 years. Measurements of racism varied among the studies providing quantitative data. Only four studies directly focused on the effects of racism on the mental health of children and young people.

Although the included studies highlighted potential negative impacts of experiences of racism on children and young people in the UK, this review shows the lack of available literature to inform policy and practice. No studies examined the impact of internalised racism, systemic and institutional racism, or intersectionality.

Physical activities are widely implemented for non-pharmacological intervention to alleviate depressive symptoms. However, there is little evidence supporting their genotype-specific effectiveness in reducing the risk of self-harm in patients with depression.

To assess the associations between physical activity and self-harm behaviour and determine the recommended level of physical activity across the genotypes.

We developed the bidirectional analytical model to investigate the genotype-specific effectiveness on UK Biobank. After the genetic stratification of the depression phenotype cohort using hierarchical clustering, multivariable logistic regression models and Cox proportional hazards models were built to investigate the associations between physical activity and the risk of self-harm behaviour.

A total of 28 923 subjects with depression phenotypes were included in the study. In retrospective cohort analysis, the moderate and highly active groups were at lower risk of self-harm behaviour. In the followed prospective cohort analysis, light-intensity physical activity was associated with a lower risk of hospitalisations due to self-harm behaviour in one genetic cluster (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.28 [95% CI, 0.08–0.96]), which was distinguished by three genetic variants: rs1432639, rs4543289 and rs11209948. Compliance with the guideline-level moderate-to-vigorous physical activities was not significantly related to the risk of self-harm behaviour.

A genotype-specific dose of light-intensity physical activity reduces the risk of self-harm by around a fourth in depressive patients.

Depression is a growing mental health concern among university students worldwide, including in Thailand. Studies show that between 17 and 40% of Thai university students experience depressive symptoms, although these studies often focus on specific groups and use different measures.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of depressive disorders among university students across Thailand.

Data were collected with the HAPPINOMETER and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scale as part of a nationwide cross-sectional survey. A total of 14 621 students from 33 universities participated in the survey. A series of binary logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the effect of sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviours on the presence of depression.

The results revealed that 31.4% of students experienced depressive symptoms, with 14.2% having major depressive disorder. The students who identified as non-binary had the highest odds of having depression (adjusted odds ratio 2.10, 95% CI 1.7–2.6, P < 0.001). Other specific subgroups were also found to be particularly vulnerable, including women, fourth-year students and those studying in Bangkok, without part-time jobs, living alone and engaging in risky health behaviours like smoking, heavy drinking and poor diet.

The findings underscore the need for comprehensive mental health support and targeted interventions within Thai universities, especially for at-risk subpopulations. Leveraging the existing collaborative networks among Thai universities presents a unique opportunity to mount a coordinated effort in developing and implementing comprehensive mental health strategies tailored to the needs of this vulnerable population.

Digital addiction among adolescents is an escalating concern with profound psychological implications, yet validated tools to measure it and studies exploring its relationship remain limited.

To validate the Bangla Digital Addiction Scale for Teenagers (Bangla DAST) and identify factors of digital addiction among Bangladeshi adolescents.

Using a two-stage stratified cluster sampling method, data from 1496 adolescents in Bangladesh were collected and analysed using non-parametric tests, Spearman correlations and multiple regression models.

The two-factor structure, encompassing attachment to digital devices (Factor 1) and compulsive use in different places (Factor 2) was supported by confirmatory factor analysis (comparative fit index 0.97, Tucker–Lewis index 0.95, root mean square error of approximation 0.06 [90% CI: 0.056–0.07] and standardised root mean square residual 0.048). McDonald’s omega was 0.81 for the total scale, 0.77 for Factor 1 and 0.63 for Factor 2. Convergent validity was supported by significant associations between digital addiction and psychological symptoms. Factors of digital addiction included age (b = 0.517, P = 0.020), academic grade (b = 0.737, P = 0.021), depression (b = 0.334, P < 0.001), anxiety (b = 0.400, P < 0.001) and insomnia (b = 0.504, P < 0.001). In contrast, female gender (b = −1.250, P = 0.001), not sleeping alone (b = −0.846, P = 0.029) and reduced smartphone usage (b = −1.895, P < 0.001) were associated with lower digital addiction scores. The model accounted for 23.1% of the variance in digital addiction.

The Bangla DAST appears to be a psychometrically valid and reliable tool and can be used for further studies assessing digital addiction among Bangladeshi adolescents. The study highlights the need for targeted preventive measures, particularly focusing on at-risk groups.

The cumulative effects of long-term exposure to pandemic-related stressors and the severity of social restrictions may have been important determinants of mental distress in the time of COVID-19.

This study aimed to investigate mental health among a cohort of Chinese university students over a 28-month period, focusing on the effects of lockdown type.

Depression, anxiety, stress and fear of COVID-19 infection were measured ten times among 188 Chinese students (females 77.7%, meanage = 19.8, s.d.age = 0.97), every 3 months: from prior to the emergence of COVID-19 in November 2019 (T1) to March 2022 (T10).

Initially depression, anxiety and stress dipped from T1 to T2, followed by a sudden increase at T3 and a slow upward rise over the remainder of the study period (T3 to T10). When locked down at university, participants showed greater mental distress compared with both home lockdown (d = 0.35–0.48) and a no-lockdown comparison period (d = 0.28–0.40). Conversely, home lockdown was associated with less anxiety and stress (d = 0.19 and 0.21, respectively), but not with depression (d = 0.13) compared with a no-lockdown period.

This study highlights the cumulative effects of exposure to COVID-19 stressors over time. It also suggests that the way in which a lockdown is carried out can impact the well-being of those involved. Some forms of lockdown appear to pose a greater threat to mental health than others.

The use of compulsory community treatment (CCT) in Australia is some of the highest worldwide despite limited evidence of effectiveness. Even within Australia, use varies widely across jurisdictions despite general similarities in legislation and health services. However, there is much less information on whether variation occurs within the same jurisdiction.

To measure variations in the use of CCT in a standardised way across the following four Australian jurisdictions: Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. We also investigated associated sociodemographic variables.

We used aggregated administrative data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

There were data on 402 060 individuals who were in contact with specialist mental health services, of whom 51 351 (12.8%) were receiving CCT. Percentages varied from 8% in NSW to 17.6% in South Australia. There were also wide variations within jurisdictions. In NSW, prevalence ranged from 2% to 13%, in Victoria from 6% to 24%, in Queensland from 11% to 25% and in South Australia from 6% to 36%. People in contact with services who were male, single and aged between 25 and 44 years old were significantly more likely to be subject to CCT, as were people living in metropolitan areas or those born outside Oceania.

There are marked variations in the use of CCT both within and between Australian jurisdictions. It is unclear how much of this variation is determined by clinical need and these findings may be of relevance to jurisdictions with similar clinician-initiated orders.

In India, women in rural areas have high rates of depression. They have poor access to mental healthcare resources and, hence, mental health symptoms remain largely unaddressed. Existing mobile telephone applications (apps) do not engage end-users, lack local language options, may not be socioculturally relevant and do not use audiovisual formats. We thus developed a mobile mental health app, Multiuser Interactive Health Response Application (MITHRA), to screen and provide brief behavioural intervention for mild to moderate depression among rural women attending self-help groups (SHGs) in India.

This qualitative study explores the process and findings of focus groups conducted with SHG administrators and women to inform the iterative development of the MITHRA app.

In total, 22 participants were interviewed (17 SHG participants and five administrators), and a thematic analysis of the data was conducted using the acceptability of interventions framework.

Frequent themes across the focus groups were affective attitude, burden, self-efficacy and perceived effectiveness. All women showed a positive attitude towards the app and depression interventions, while older women demonstrated less self-efficacy in using mobile mental health apps.

MITHRA is a promising app in the management of mild to moderate depression in women in SHG. With adequate training and education of family members, MITHRA has the potential to identify and treat women with mild to moderate depression.

Suicide-related stigma (i.e. negative attitudes towards people with suicidal thoughts and/or behaviours as well as those bereaved by suicide) is a potential risk factor for suicide and mental health problems. To date, there has been no scoping review investigating the association between suicide-related stigma and mental health, help-seeking, suicide and grief across several groups affected by suicide.

To determine the nature of the relationship between suicide-related stigma and mental health, help-seeking, grief (as a result of suicide bereavement) and suicide risk.

This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022327093). Five databases (Web of Science, APA PsycInfo, Embase, ASSIA and PubMed) were searched, with the final update in May 2024. Studies were included if they were published in English between 2000 and 2024 and assessed both suicide-related stigma AND one of the following: suicide, suicidal thoughts or suicidal behaviours, help-seeking, grief or other mental health variables. Following screening of 14 994 studies, 100 eligible studies were identified. Following data charting, cross-checking was conducted to ensure no relevant findings were missed.

Findings across the studies were mixed. However, most commonly, suicide-related stigma was associated with higher levels of suicide risk, poor mental health, lowered help-seeking and grief-related difficulties. A model of suicide-related stigma has been developed to display the directionality of these associations.

This review emphasises the importance of reducing the stigma associated with suicide and suicidal behaviour to improve outcomes for individuals affected by suicide. It also identifies gaps in our knowledge as well as providing suggestions for future research.

Suicidal ideation and behaviours are common among adolescents, posing significant challenges. Parents have a protective role in mitigating this risk, yet they often feel ill-equipped to support their adolescents, and their specific support needs are not well understood.

To explore the lived experiences of parents with suicidal adolescents and identify their support needs in the context of a therapist-assisted online parenting programme.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three stakeholder groups based in Australia: nine parents with lived experience caring for a suicidal adolescent, five young people who experienced suicidality during adolescence and five clinical/research experts in youth mental health/suicide prevention. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse and interpret findings.

Three key themes highlight the experience of parenting a suicidal adolescent: the traumatising emotional experience, uncertainty and parent empowerment. Six themes described parents’ support needs: validation and support, practical and tailored strategies, rebuilding the parent–adolescent relationship, parental self-care, flexible and accessible modes of delivery, and understanding non-suicidal self-injury.

Findings highlight key themes of parenting a suicidal adolescent and parental support needs. An online parenting programme could offer parents flexible access to evidence-based parenting strategies. Yet, a purely digital approach may not address the complexities of the parent-adolescent dynamic and provide adequate tailoring. As such, a hybrid approach incorporating therapist support can provide parents with both the compassionate support and practical guidance they seek.

Asylum seekers have difficulty gaining access to mental healthcare. Lack of understanding of asylum seekers’ mental illness explanatory models appears to be an important barrier. Gaining a better understanding of these explanatory models is crucial for ensuring the inclusion of asylum seekers in healthcare services. The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) might help to explore asylum seekers’ explanatory models of mental illness.

To analyse asylum seekers’ explanatory models as elicited by the CFI.

The CFI and its first supplementary module were carried out with asylum seekers with mental health problems. Transcriptions of the interviews underwent reflexive thematic analysis within a social constructivist framework.

In the analysis of 25 illness narratives, three major themes characterising asylum seekers’ explanatory models were identified: a burden of the past, a disenabling current reality, and a personal position and individual experience.

The interplay among pre-, peri- and post-migration experiences, having a continuous impact on asylum seekers’ mental health, was highlighted by the themes ‘a burden of the past’, and ‘a disenabling current reality’. The theme ‘a personal position and individual experience’ revealed how the CFI enables self-determination in clinical encounters by embracing uncertainty and questioning the medicalisation of distress. The analysis characterises asylum seekers’ symptoms as a personal idiom of distress within socio-relational contexts. The CFI provides a clinically useful framework for exploring asylum seekers’ explanatory models and fostering dynamic understanding.

Forming ‘if-then’ plans has been shown to reduce self-harm among people admitted to hospital following an episode of self-harm.

To explore whether the same intervention, delivered online, could prevent future self-harm among a large community sample who had previously self-harmed.

UK adults were recruited to a randomised controlled trial and received either an intervention to reduce self-harm or one to reduce sedentariness (control group). Randomisation was stratified to ensure both groups were representative of the UK population. There were three primary outcomes: non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, assessed at baseline and 6 months post-intervention.

Participants (1040) were randomised to the intervention (n = 520) or control (n = 520) group. The vast majority of people formed implementation intentions in both the experimental (n = 459 (88.3%)) and control (n = 520 (100%)) condition. Overall, the intervention did not significantly reduce the frequency of NSSI, suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. Among people who had self-harmed in the past week at follow-up, mixed analysis of covariance revealed a significant interaction between time and condition for reflective motivation, F(1,102) = 7.08, P < 0.01, pn2 = 0.07, such that significantly lower levels of reflective motivation were reported at follow-up in the control condition, t(57) = 2.42, P = 0.02.

This web-based intervention has limited utility for reducing self-reported self-harm or suicidal ideation in adults with a history of self-harm. Further work is needed to improve the effectiveness of brief interventions for self-harm aimed at adults living in the community and to understand the conditions under which the intervention may or may not be effective.

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns had a significant impact on mental well-being and (mental) healthcare systems globally.

To describe trends and dynamics of out-patient prescribing of psychotropic medications during the COVID-19 pandemic in The Netherlands.

Dispensed psychotropic medication prescriptions during the COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 to March 2022 were retrieved from national registry data. Numbers of total and incident dispensed prescriptions and defined daily doses (DDDs) were identified for six medication groups. Overall pandemic-related changes in prescribing trends were analysed using interrupted time-series analyses. Lockdown-related prescribing dynamics were described using monthly risk ratios.

No overall pandemic-related changes in prescribing were detected, except for alcohol addiction medication, for which a pre-pandemic decline in total dispensed prescriptions and DDDs levelled off during the pandemic: +10 prescriptions per week (95% CI 7–11, P ≤ 0.001) and +111 DDDs per week (95% CI 56–165, P = 0.001). Monthly prescribing dynamics showed transient increases in all medication groups during the second and third lockdown periods. There were decreases in dispensed incident antidepressant and opioid addiction medication prescriptions during the first lockdown (average risk ratios: 0.87 and 0.88 respectively), and DDDs of dispensed incident and total attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder medication prescriptions and incident benzodiazepine prescriptions were elevated from the end of the second lockdown (average risk ratios: 1.40, 1.12 and 1.17, respectively).

These findings raise concerns regarding possible over- and under-prescribing during the pandemic. Further understanding of specific factors driving these changes is necessary to help prepare for future mental health(care) challenges.

Early detection of psychosis is paramount for reducing the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). One key factor contributing to extended DUP is service delay – the time from initial contact with psychiatric services to diagnosis. Reducing service delay depends on prompt identification of psychosis. Patients with schizophrenia and severe social impairment have been found to have prolonged DUP. Whether service delay significantly contributes to prolonged DUP in this group is unclear.

To examine and compare the course of illness for patients with schizophrenia who are homeless or domiciled, with a focus on service delay in detecting psychosis.

In this case–control study, we included out-patients with a schizophrenia spectrum diagnosis and who were homeless or domiciled but in need of an outreach team to secure continuous treatment. Interviews included psychosocial history and psychopathological and social functioning scales.

We included 85 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Mean service delay was significantly longer in the homeless group (5.5 years) compared with the domiciled group (2.5 years, P = 0.001), with a total sample mean of 3.9 years. Similarly, DUP was significantly longer in the homeless group, mean 15.5 years, versus 5.0 years in the domiciled group (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the homeless group had an earlier onset of illness than the domiciled group but were almost the same age at diagnosis.

Our findings point to the concerning circumstance that individuals with considerable risk of developing severe schizophrenia experience a substantial delay in diagnosis and do not receive timely treatment.

Myocardial bridge contributes to chest pain, often accompanied by non-specific complaints.

Our study aims to determine somatic symptom disorder (SSD) prevalence in patients with myocardial bridge, investigating associated clinical and psychological features.

In this prospective cross-sectional study, we enrolled 1357 participants (337 with and 1020 without myocardial bridge) from Shanghai Renji Hospital. The Somatic Symptom Scale-China questionnaire was used to assess SSD. Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7).

The prevalence of SSD in the myocardial bridge group was 63.2%, higher than the group without myocardial bridge (53.8%). Patients with myocardial bridge were at an increased risk of SSD (odds ratio 1.362, 95% CI 1.026–1.809; P = 0.033). There were no differences in the mean PHQ-9 scores (3.2 ± 3.4 v. 3.2 ± 4.1; P = 0.751) or GAD-7 scores (2.5 ± 3.0 v. 2.3 ± 3.7; P = 0.143) between the two groups. Among patients with myocardial bridge, gender was the only independent risk factor for SSD. Women were 3.119 times more likely to experience SSD compared with men (95% CI 1.537–6.329; P = 0.002).

Our findings emphasise the high prevalence and severity of SSD among patients with myocardial bridge. The screening for SSD should be of particular concern, especially among female patients.

Hong Kong’s 3-year dynamic zero-COVID policy has caused prolonged exposure to stringent, pervasive anti-epidemic measures, which poses additional stressors on emotional well-being through pandemic fatigue, beyond the incumbent fear of the pandemic.

To investigate how major policy shifts in the zero-COVID strategy have corresponded with changing relationships between emotional well-being, pandemic fatigue from policy adherence, and pandemic fear, following the pandemic peak to a living-with-COVID policy.

A three-wave repeated cross-sectional study (N = 2266) was conducted on the Chinese working-age population (18–64 years) during the peak outbreak (Wave 1), and subsequent policy shifts towards a living-with-COVID policy during the initial relaxation (Wave 2) and full relaxation (Wave 3) of anti-epidemic measures from March 2022 to March 2023. Non-parametric tests, consisting of robust analysis of covariance tests and quantile regression analysis, were performed.

The severity of all measures was lowered after Wave 1; however, extreme pandemic fears reported in Wave 2 (n = 38, 7.7%) were associated with worse emotional well-being than the pandemic peak (Wave 1), which then subsided in Wave 3. Pandemic fatigue posed greater negative emotional well-being in Wave 1, whereas pandemic fear was the dominant predictor in Waves 2 and 3.

Pandemic fatigue and pandemic fear together robustly highlight the psychological cost of prolonged pandemic responses, expanding on a framework for monitoring and minimising the unintended mental health ramifications of anti-epidemic policies.

People with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have a higher prevalence of comorbid depression than the general population. While previous research has shown that behavioural activation is effective for general depression, its efficacy and safety in treating depression associated with NCDs remains unclear.

To compare the efficacy and safety of behavioural activation against comparators in reducing depression symptoms in people with NCDs.

We searched six databases from inception until 30 March 2023 (updated 23 September 2024) for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing behavioural activation with comparators for depression in people with NCDs. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration’s ‘risk-of-bias 2 tool’. We calculated a random-effects, inverse-variance weighting meta-analysis.

Of the 21 386 initial studies, 12 RCTs (with 2144 patients) comparing behavioural activation with any comparator on treatment outcomes for depression with comorbid NCD met the inclusion criteria. Six studies rated as low risk of bias. For short-term follow-ups (up to 6 months), meta-analysis showed behavioural activation had little effect on depression symptom improvement in people with NCDs (Hedges’ g = −0.24; 95% CI, −0.62 to 0.15), compared to comparators, with high heterogeneity (I2 = 91.91%). Of the 12 included studies, three RCTs provided data on adverse events occurring during the trial.

Evidence from this systematic review is not sufficient to draw clear conclusions about the efficacy and safety of behavioural activation for reducing depression symptoms in people with NCDs. Future reviews need to include more high-quality, well-designed RCTs to better understand the potential benefits of behavioural activation for comorbid depression.

People with an intellectual disability are vulnerable to additional disorders such as dementia. Psychometrically sound and specific instruments are needed for assessment of cognitive functioning in cases of suspected dementia.

To evaluate the construct and item validity, internal consistency and test–retest reliability of a new neuropsychological test battery, the Dementia Test for People with Intellectual Disability (DTIM).

The DTIM was applied to 107 individuals with intellectual disability with (n = 16) and without (n = 91) dementia. The psychometric properties of the DTIM were assessed in a prospective study. The assessors were blinded to the diagnostic assignment.

Confirmatory factor analysis at the scale level showed that a one-factor model fitted the data well (root mean square error of approximation < 0.06, standardised root mean square residual < 0.08, comparative fit index > 0.9). At the domain level, one-factor models showed reasonable-to-good fit index for five of seven domains. Internal consistency indicated excellent reliability of the overall scale (Cronbach’s α: 0.94 for dementia and 0.95 for controls). Item analysis revealed a wide range of difficulties (0.19–0.75 for dementia, 0.31–0.87 for controls), with minimal floor and ceiling effects. Eleven items (26%) had discrimination value ≤ 0.50. Test–retest reliability (n = 82) was high, with intraclass correlations of 0.95 (total score) and 0.69–0.96 (domains).

The DTIM fits a one-factor model and demonstrates internal and test–retest reliability; thus, it is suitable for use in cases of suspected dementia in people with various intellectual disabilities.

Care planning for recovery and to work towards hospital discharge is integral to good practice in mental health in-patient settings. Authorised leave from hospital, especially for those who are detained, can be used to check readiness for discharge and to maintain social connections that support a patient’s recovery journey. Leave therefore often involves friends and family, or ‘carers’. However, carer involvement in planning leave is limited, and carers struggle with feeling unsupported during the leave.

This study aimed to explore carers’ and mental health practitioners’ subjective experiences of leave in the context of implementing a set of practice guidelines for involving carers in planning and undertaking leave from hospital.

Nine wards in six National Health Service trusts were recruited to implement the guidelines. Interviews were undertaken with carers (n = 6) and practitioners (n = 3) from these implementation wards and with carers (n = 7) from nine usual care wards. A further ten practitioners completed an anonymous online survey. Data were analysed thematically.

Carers’ experiences on both implementation and usual care wards indicated variable levels of involvement, with carers positioned as partners in care, observers of care or outsiders to care. Practitioner perspectives highlighted practical, structural and conceptual challenges in working with carers, which precluded effective implementation of the guidelines.

The guidelines reflected what both carers and practitioners described as good practice, but resource limitations, unclear responsibilities and perceptions of carer roles limited engagement. Implementing approaches to working with carers in in-patient settings requires resourcing and clear role definition within staff–carer relationships.

Adolescence marks a critical transition period, with significant mental health challenges including anxiety and depression symptoms that affect long-term happiness. There has been a lack of research exploring the factors mediating adolescent happiness.

To investigate the mediating effects of anxiety and depression on adolescent happiness, as well as the contributions of sociodemographic factors.

We recruited 392 adolescents. Anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms and happiness were assessed by the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire and single-item happiness scale, respectively. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect sociodemographic information.

Spearman correlation analysis showed significant negative correlations of happiness with anxiety (r = −0.37, P < 0.0001) and depression (r = −0.47, P < 0.0001). Positive predictors of happiness included quality of parents’ marriage (β = 0.12, P = 0.006), regular physical exercise (β = 0.13, P = 0.006) and regular diet (β = 0.10, P = 0.03). Mediation analysis indicated that depressive symptoms (estimate = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.80) and anxiety symptoms (estimate = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.57) partially mediated the relationship between regular exercise and happiness, whereas depressive symptoms completely mediated the relationship between anxiety symptoms and happiness (estimate = −0.14, 95% CI: −0.20 to −0.08).

The findings of this study highlight the intricate interplay of mental health issues, lifestyle factors and adolescent happiness and emphasise the need for comprehensive interventions focusing on enhancing physical activity and addressing psychological health to foster happiness among adolescents.
