In this paper, biochemical and physiological analyses were used to characterize changes associated with mortality event occurred during veliger development of American oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Biochemical analyses included the evaluation of lipid classes, fatty acid composition and total protein content. Larval physiology was evaluated by studying feeding activity, enzymes related to energy metabolism, oxidative stress levels and enzymatic antioxidant defenses. These analyses were complemented by bacterial community analyses as well as by measuring larval oyster performance. We observed that mortality events coincided with (1) strong changes in the surrounding bacterial community; (2) a progressive decrease in feeding activity; (3) higher levels of some lipid classes (free fatty acids, diglycerides, and acetone mobile phospholipids); (4) lower levels of phospholipids and protein; (5) higher contents of non-methylene interrupted dienoic fatty acids (22:2 NMI); (6) a decrease in energy metabolism activity (citrate synthase and cytochrome oxidase activities); (7) a higher oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation level); and (8) an activation of antioxidant defences before mortality (glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase). We hypothesized that mortality emergence was related to higher energy consumption coupled with the progressive decline in feeding activity, lowered energy reserves and a decrease in energy metabolism activity. Thus, the low energy availability limited the efficiency of antioxidant defenses, resulting in a higher oxidative stress.

This work examines the effects of constant long and short days on the hormonal profile of plasma17β-oestradiol (E2) levels and the ovarian vitellogenic events, as well as on the fecundity, time of spawning and egg quality of sea bass. Constant short days first administered in April advanced spawning (by 45 days on average) whereas exposure to constant long days from the same date induced a delay (averaging 38 days) compared to controls reared on an ambient light regime (Lat. 40°N). These light regimes produced shifts in the profiles of plasma 17β-oestradiol and in the percentage of the vitellogenic oocytes according to the spawning time of the respective groups. Relative fecundity of the short day group was similar to controls (257,000 versus 230,000 eggs/kg spawned female, respectively). However, in the long day group, relative fecundity was reduced to one half that of control fish (124,000). Plasma oestradiol showed a bimodal pattern under long days and vitellogenetic and atretic oocytes were present for a longer period (6-7 months compared to 4-5 months in controls). In summary, in this paper we describe, for the first time in the sea bass, the effect of constant photoperiod regimes on the 17β-oestradiol plasma profiles, the timing of spawning and the quality of the eggs.

The effects of toxic and non-toxic strains of Alexandrium sp. on the initial feeding responses of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were determined by continuous monitoring of the clearance rate of individual oysters. This was determined fluorometrically by loss of fluorescence of live microalgae introduced as food. Feeding oysters with toxic or non-toxic A. tamarense and toxic A. fundyense resulted in stop/start clearance behaviour. In contrast, control oysters fed a reference microalga, Isochrysis sp., known to support their growth, did not exhibit this behavior. Pacific oysters acclimated to Isochrysis sp., fed mixtures of Alexandrium/Isochrysis, showed further evidence of stop/start clearance. Exposure for periods up to 48 hours with non-toxic A. tamarense did not enhance clearance of either Alexandrium or Isochrysis.

Fishery independent indices of spawning biomass of Atlantic bluefin tuna in western North Atlantic Ocean are presented which utilize National Marine Fisheries Service ichthyoplankton survey data collected from 1977 through 2007 in the Gulf of Mexico. Indices were developed using similarly standardized data from which previous indices were developed (i.e. abundance of larvae with a first daily otolith increment formed per 100 m2 of water sampled with bongo gear). Indices were also developed for the first time from standardized data collected with neuston gear [i.e. abundance of 5-mm larvae (i.e. seven-day-old larvae) per 10 minute tow]. Indices of larval abundance were developed using delta-lognormal models, including following covariates: time of day, time of month, area sampled and year. Due to the large frequency of zero catches during ichthyoplankton surveys, a zero-inflated delta-lognormal approach was also used to develop indices. Finally, a multivariate delta-lognormal approach was employed to develop indices of annual abundance based on both bongo and neuston catches. The results of these approaches were compared with one another and with other indices of larval abundance previously developed for the Gulf of Mexico. Residual analyses indicated that abundance indices of Atlantic bluefin tuna larvae were more appropriately developed from bongo-collected data through the zero-inflated delta-lognormal approach than other data sets and modeling approaches. Also, when modeling bongo-collected data with the zero-inflated delta-lognormal approach, the index values increased, indicating some correction for zero-inflation, and their variability decreased as compared to indices developed with the delta-lognormal approach.

Sibling juvenile vundu Heterobranchus longifilis reared at 27 ± 1 °C under 12L:12D were fed during the day, at night or over the entire 24-h cycle, for periods of 14-15 d. Nighttime feeding gave the highest growth rates, best feed conversion, lowest mortality, fewest losses due to cannibalism and least growth heterogeneity. The trends were seen in fish of all ages and weights (31−101 d and 0.3−30.0 g), but differences were significant only for the smallest fish that were reared at the lowest stocking biomass (< 3.5 g·L−1). The effects of daytime and nighttime feeding were examined in 151-d old (85 g) juveniles stocked at different biomasses (3.4 and 13.6 g·L−1). The growth of vundu was density-dependent, being impaired at low stocking density, but this was substantially mitigated under nighttime feeding. Rearing at high stocking density, feeding at night or in darkness, may act through similar mechanisms that involve changes in the level of aggressive behaviour. It is suggested that nighttime feeding in intensive catfish culture could be replaced by 24-h feeding under conditions of permanent darkness.

Ideas and considerations are put forward for managing fisheries and marine populations using primarily trawl surveys to supply biological and spatial indicators of the state of stocks, and to permit catch per unit effort (CPUE)-based assessments. Trawl surveys seldom allow absolute estimates of fish population sizes but, if appropriately located, timed, and designed, can provide a broad range of information about catchable fish species and the ecosystem that supports them. This information may be more conducive to sustainable management of fisheries than the traditional focus on the abundances of selected stocks. The paper first briefly proposes how survey-based methods might supplement existing fishery-dependent stock assessments, as would be necessary during a transition phase to a more ecosystem-orientated system of management. Full survey-based management is then considered in relation to management objectives, the selection of indicators, survey design, reference periods, levels and directions, statistical aspects, CPUE-based assessments, and management responses to good and bad signals from the ecosystem. We argue that existing fishery-dependent stock assessments cannot be claimed to produce absolute estimates of stock abundance and fishing mortality because natural mortality (M) is seldom known accurately and, therefore, that they should not be presumed superior to the relative information from surveys, and an agreeable form of adaptive management.

Day and night acoustic surveys were used to compare fish stock estimates at eight European reservoirs and one flooded mining pit. During both photoperiods of summer, higher fish biomass was observed in the uppermost 4 m of the water column by horizontal beaming than in deeper water by vertical beaming. Comparisons of volume backscattering coefficient (sv), fish biomass (kg ha−1), abundance (ind. ha−1) and average fish weight (g) did not show a common pattern among the reservoirs but were found to vary significantly across photoperiods. At most reservoirs, the night surveys had higher estimates than day surveys. However, at several reservoirs the opposite pattern was observed. These patterns could not be explained by the species composition of the fish stocks. Fish size distributions were found to be different between day and night. A higher proportion of 1+ and older fish were found during the night at two of three studied waterbodies. In general, it was not possible to decide whether day or night acoustic surveys gave more reliable fish stock assessments. We advise performing both day and night transects on a given water body before deciding when to conduct the full survey. For a complete fish assessment it is very desirable to combine acoustic mobile surveys with active sampling gear.

L'influence de la période (jour, nuit) et de la fréquence d'alimentation (1 à 4 repas fractionnés ou alimentation continue) a été étudiée sur la croissance et l'efficacité alimentaire chez un silure africain (Heterobranchus longifilis). L'expérience, d'une durée de 56 jours, a été réalisée sur des poissons de 74 g de poids moyen initial. Avec un même taux de rationnement (3 % du poids vif/jour), les poissons nourris la nuit ont une croissance significativement plus élevée que ceux nourris le jour et un nourrissage sur l'ensemble du nycthémère n'apporte pas d'amélioration. Les performances de croissance tendent à augmenter avec l'accroissement de la fréquence d'alimentation quelle que soit la période de nourrissage, et les croissances sont significativement plus élevées avec une alimentation en continu, de 2,36 à 2,64 g.j-1. L'indice de consommation est significativement plus faible pour les poissons nourris en continu que pour ceux recevant une alimentation par repas. Le rapport hépatosomatique est significativement plus élevé chez les poissons nourris la nuit que pour ceux nourris le jour. Par contre, les dépôts de graisse dans la cavité abdominale sont plus importants chez les individus nourris de jour et augmentent avec la fréquence des repas. L'analyse des compositions corporelles globales confirme ces observations. En pratique, il est recommandé de nourrir ce poisson en continu durant la nuit, ce mode d'alimentation conduisant aux meilleures performances de croissance.

Immunological alterations may be used as ecotoxicological biomarkers to detect and monitor biological effects of chemical contaminants in polluted environments. This study reports on a survey of Pacific oysters from the Atlantic coast of Britanny (France) after the “Erika” oil spill. Reared stocks were sampled twice a year from November 2001 to March 2003 at three impacted sites and at an additional site outside the spill area. A multiparametric diagnosis of the immune system was performed on individual hemolymph samples to identify structural, immunopathological alterations and functional impairment of immunocompetent cells. One year after the spill, severe immunological alterations were observed in a site heavily impacted by oil. Since the oysters there had higher contents of PAH compared to the other sites, it was suggested that chronic contamination, possibly generated by oil trapped in the sediments, had induced immunotoxicity. Moreover, moderate variations in some hemolymph parameters observed at the non-impacted area strongly suggested that natural environmental factors may have generated physiological stress. An immunotoxicological index applied here in order to integrate all measurements of defense-related functions appeared to be an efficient tool to identify samples suffering immunological stress.

Trammel net is the main fishing gear used by artisanal fishers in Majorca Island (NW Mediterranean), and is representative of Mediterranean small-scale fisheries using static gear. The use of static gears close to the coast, where seasonal variability and spatial heterogeneity are high, promotes the diversification of fishing practices or metiers. We analyze the seasonal dynamics of the nets used, target species (red and black scorpionfish, red mullet and cuttlefish) exploitation patterns and the socio-economic conditions under which this fishery takes place, based on General Fisheries Directorate daily sale records (2002–2006). Additional personal socioeconomic interviews allowed the characterization of the trammel net fishery, its fishing behaviour, cost structure and conflicts. Catch and effort data and market surveys are used to evaluate the level of exploitation of the target species and allowed describing Majorca trammel net fishery as an activity based on a sustainable resource. The main target species were found to be near their maximum sustainable yield both by means of a surplus production model (with parameters estimated by CEDA-Catch Effort Data Analysis, software) and an age structured assessment model based on yield-per-recruit analysis. Management actions currently debated by local administration and fishers focus on improving fishers' economic situation, rather than on protecting a threatened resource. One of the management actions proposed is a one day effort reduction, which was analyzed here with the help of a bioeconomic simulation model. A 15-year (2005–2020) simulation allows providing advice to local managers to focus on the commercialization aspects, in order to obtain a higher value to the fish production, rather than expecting to obtain higher profits only by a reduction of the offer.

Pike-perch Stizostedion lucioperca larvae fasted or given two diets (artificial feed, zooplankton) were studied by transmission electron microscopy and using specific cytological dyes. The objective of this work was to assess the changes in the yolk sac, liver and anterior intestine following the mouth opening stage (95 °C.d, day 5 - 5.8 mm) from endo- to exotrophy periods. The yolk sac included a syncytial envelope closely bound to the proteinaceous vitellus and the oil globule. Its development was similar to that observed in trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss and Salmo fario trutta )and sea-bream (Sparus aurata,) but without vitellus fragmentation into platelets. Vitellus resorption was never achieved in dying larvae. From the end of the endotrophic phase onwards, the amount of hepatic glycogen decreased. Carbohydrate disappeared at the beginning of the exotrophic phase then increased after 220 °C.d (day 10 - 6.0 mm), mainly in zooplankton-fed larvae. Lipids from enterocytes, sinusoids and general blood Stream showed a similar development. They were abundant at 95 °C.d, progressively disappeared up to 260 °C.d (day 12 - 6.3 mm), and increased again from 350 °C.d (day 16 - 6.7 mm) onwards if larvae were fed zooplankton. Dietary lipids did not seem to immediately replace yolk lipids despite absorption in the gut. Various hypotheses are proposed to explain the physiological abnormalities of this critical larval stage. Although zooplankton appeared to have better nutritional qualities than the artificial feed, these two foods proved to be quite unsatisfactory as they induced liver cell changes typical of food deficiency, generally observed in starving larvae.

Patterns of annual freshwater flows in the Murray River and recruitment of mulloway, Argyrosomus japonicus (Scianidae) were reviewed in terms of recent age structures and historical catches and CPUE. Age distributions from the nearshore marine fishery were dominated by the 1993 age class which comprised 35% and 41% of 2001 and 2002 catches, respectively. In 1993 annual freshwater inflow was 2.4 times the 25 year average. Freshwater inflow explained 28% and 35% of the variability in year class strength in the nearshore marine fishery in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Over 80% of the current South Australian commercial catch of mulloway comprises juveniles taken from the remnant estuary of the Murray River. Our results suggest that recent low levels of recruitment in South Australia's fisheries for A. japonicus may reflect low fresh water inflows since 1993. Since 2000, southern Australia has experienced the worst drought in recorded history and management strategies for this fishery must take into account effects of both environmental factors and fishing mortality on this vulnerable sciaenid population. We suggest that the population of A. japonicus located about the Murray River system is estuarine dependent, that the estuary provides important refuge for juveniles, and that strong year classes, or their absence, may be related to freshwater inflow to this environment. We also suggest that age distributions of this apex predator may provide an indicator of environmental health for the Murray River estuary.

Freshwater fishing is highly developed in the Amazonian basin, and the problems of managing the fish resource are becoming increasingly acute. The global model of exploited stock dynamics has proved inadequate for explaining the variations observed in catches from one year to the next. Following the results of recent studies in maritime fishing, this work aims to identify the contribution of environmental variables (hydrological parameters have been selected) to the explanation of variations in the abundance of the exploited fish community. An abundance index is calculated based on the catch per unit of effort statistics and the surface of the considered basin. Using a 12-year time series, the results show that the effect of the fishing effort on the index of abundance is negligible when viewed alongside the flood regime parameters for the years prior to the catch. The effects revealed are, in chronological order of appearance: 1) a positive effect of the water level during the flood regime peak three years previous to the catch, probably associated with recruitment for a number of species; 2) the effect of the water level during its rise two years before the catch, which may well be related to competition phenomena; and 3) the effect of severe low-water levels two years before the catch, possibly due to mass natural mortality during the severest periods of low-water. Because there are complex migratory movements of fish populations either side of low-water periods, only the estimated biomass during the flood appears to be an accurate reflection of the mean biomass in the environment. Linear models are presented, where the abundance index is a function of the hydrological parameters previously identified. The model with 3 variables corresponding to the 3 evidenced effects, explains more than 83% of the variations in the annual abundance indices.

A mass-balanced trophic model was developed for the coral reef lagoon of Uvea atoll (New Caledonia) using the Ecopath software. The model accounts for both pelagic and soft-bottom communities to describe the whole trophic structure and biomass flows in the shallowest part of the atoll lagoon. Phytoplankton production approximately equals the benthic primary production. Benthic biomass accounts for more than 80% of the total living biomass in the shallow lagoon. The benthic domain requires input of food from the pelagic system (mainly zooplankton) and from adjacent areas to sustain the biomass of predatory fishes. Predation pressure was found to be a major force structuring the food web, but it is also suggested that water circulation within the lagoon influences the amount of primary resources, such as plankton, benthic microphytes and detritus.

Two trawl surveys were carried out in the summer months (June–July) of 1996 and 1997 along the whole South Adriatic area (Mediterranean sea) for the first time, using the same vessel and the same sampling gear (European Community Research Project ‘MEDITS’); previous research data referred only to the south-western Adriatic side. A total list of 168 demersal species (fishes, cephalopods and crustaceans) was obtained during the surveys; species abundance data (individuals/trawling hour) were processed according to multivariate techniques in order to describe the composition and the distribution of the main species assemblages within the investigated area (10–800-m bathymetric range). Multivariate analysis of MEDITS survey catch data showed a bold relationship between fish assemblages and depth, while the influence of depth was lower with respect to cephalopod and especially crustacean assemblage distribution.

Thirty French fleets fishing primarily in the Bay of Biscay were defined based on techno-economic input criteria: i) 18 fishing gear or gear combinations ii) the location of fishing grounds visited during a year (<12 nautical miles from coast, beyond 12 nm or both) and iii) total vessel length (<20 m for trawlers and other gears <24 m). The fleets were then characterised in terms of horse power, economic dependence on a list of nine dominant commercial species (sole, Nephrops, sea bass, hake, monkfish, anchovy, cuttlefish, sardine and squid) and their contribution to the landings of these species from the Bay of Biscay. Most fleets derived the majority of their income from one or two among the nine species. Species dependencies changed little during the study period, except for those vessels targeting anchovy before the fishery restrictions starting in 2005. Fish community impacts were compared based on fleet landings' profiles. Twelve landings profiles were determined using hierarchical cluster analysis. Fleets using similar gears had the same landings' profiles and therefore exercised similar pressures on the ecosystem, though not always in the same areas. The depletion of anchovy and the closure of the fishery lead to a change in landings profile for offshore pelagic trawlers from anchovy dominance to one with a larger proportion of albacore and sea bass. During the study period, the overall vessel number decreased from 2163 to 1845. Few vessels changed fleets, but if they did, they primarily started to fish closer to the coast, which might be a result of increasing fuel prices.

Two feeding experiments were conducted to evaluate growth and survival rates of African catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis Valenciennes, 1840) larvae fed with different diets: live Artemia nauplii, frozen Artemia nauplii, live zooplankton (Moina micrura), frozen zooplankton (Moina micrura), a dry diet based on yeast powder and beef liver, and a commercial trout starter diet. The larvae were fed in excess, six timesper day every 4 hours, from the onset of exogenous feeding up to an age of 14 days. In both experiments the final mean weight and specific growth rate of fish fed live Artemia nauplii were significantly higher than those of fish fed other diets (p > 0.05). Survival rates of fish fed Artemia (live or frozen), Moina micrura (live or frozen) and dry diet did not significantly differ (p > 0.05) and ranged from 79 to 92% and 61 to73% for experiment 1 and experiment 2, respectively. The commercial trout diet led to significantly lower growth and survival rates in comparison to all other diets tested. Although it led to a lower growth rate than that obtained with Artemia, Moina micrura proved suitable for first feeding of H. longifilis larvae. Locally available in West African waters, this cladocera could constitute a valuable alternative for larval rearing when a shortage of Artemia is expenenced. The results also showed that the artificial feed based on yeastpowder and beef liver leads to survival rates as high as those obtained with living diets and thus represents a promising way for feeding H. longifilis fry. However, further studies on the nutritional requirements of the larvae remain necessary in order to improve the efficiency of dry diet in terms of growth performance.

Survival and growth performances of autotriploids in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and three types of triploid hybrids between female rainbow trout and brown trout males (Salmo trutta,) coho salmon males (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and brook trout males (Salvelinus fontinalis) were analysed relatively to the parental species in freshwater farming conditions. At the end of the immature period, autotriploids exhibit moderate but significant depression relative to the control for both survival (about 25% depression) and growth (10 to 15% depression). Most of this depression is established during the first three months of life, triploids appearing very similar to the control later on. At the onset of sexual maturation at 2 years old, relative value of triploids becomes higher than that of the control, for both survival and growth. Long term evaluation (2+ or 3+) balances in favor of triploids with particular advantage for triploid females. Triploid hybrids exhibit much more important depression in early survival (up to 60%). Later on, their survival remains always lower than those of parental controls. Their growth performances are intermediate between their two parental species. Despite a relative advantage for these groups during the onset of sexual maturation in control groups, especially for growth, long tem evaluation is in favor of diploid rainbow trout, but in some specific cases.
