In this article, exact and approximate techniques are used to obtain parameters of interest for two problems involving differential equations of power-law type. The first problem is related to non-linear steady-state diffusion, and is investigated by means of a hodograph transformation and an approximation using a path-independent integral. The second problem involves Poiseuille flow of a pseudo-plasticfluid, and a path-independent integral is derived which yields an exact result for the geometry under consideration.

In the May 1983 issue of Scientific American, A.T. Winfree published an article which gave an explanation of sudden cardiac arrest in terms of topology. His topological argument was modified in his 1987 book called “When time breaks down”. In this paper we fill what appears to be a gap in Winfree's topological arguments.

In industrial applications of microwave heating, it has been observed that rather than the heating taking place uniformly, regions of high temperature, called hot-spots, tend to form. Depending on the industrial application, these can be either desirable or undesirable, and hence a theoretical understanding of the properties of the material that lead to hotspot formation is necessary. It has been shown in previous studies that hotspot formation is a product of the nonlinear dependence of microwave energy absorption by the material on temperature. It is shown in the present work that the conductivity of the material can have a significant effect on hotspot formation and can, if large enough, stop a hotspot from forming.

When an object is heated by microwaves, isolated regions of excessive heating can often occur. The present paper investigates such hotspots by both perturbation and numerical means. For quite normal materials, it is shown that small temperature anomalies can grow to form hotspots. Furthermore, such effects do not need to be associated with thermal runaway.

The existence of an inertial manifold for a reaction-diffusion equation model of the chemostat is established.

In this paper we consider the asymptotics of extinction for the nonlinear diffusion reaction equation

with non-negative initial data possessing finite support. For t > 0, both solution and support vanish as t → T and x → x0. With T as the extinction time we construct the asymptotic solution as τ = T – t → 0 near the extinction point x0 using matched expansions. Taking x0= 0, we first form an outer expansion valid when η =xt–(m–p)/2 (1–p) = 0(1). This is nonuniformly valid for large |η| and has to be replaced by an intermediate expansion valid for |x| = O(τ−1/l0) where l0 is an even integer greater than unity. If p + m ≥ 2 this expansion is uniformly valid while for p + m < 2, there are regions near the edge of the support where diffusion becomes important. The zero order solution in these inner regions is discussed numerically.

This paper examines the control of an interface between a suspension of sedimenting particles in liquid and a bed of dense-packed particles at the bottom of the suspension. The problem arises in the operation of continuous thickeners (e.g. in mineral processing) and is here mathematically described by a first order inhomogeneous partial differential equation for the concentration C(x, t) of particles. The controlled variable is the height H* of the bed, and the control variables are the volume fluxes injected at the feed level and removed at the bed. A strategy to control the interface is devised, and control is confirmed and demonstrated by a series of numerical experiments.

In this paper, we consider the existence of a family of periodic solutions of large amplitude when a pair of eigenvalues of the linear part of a first-order system of ordinary differential equations crosses the imaginary axis. We refer to this problem as a Hopf bifurcation problem at infinity. In our work, the nonlinearities may be discontinuous at the origin, and the proof of existence of periodic solutions is arrived at through the corresponding system of integral equations. The applicability of the result is demonstrated by the study of the dynamics of a train truck wheelset system.

We present new exact solutions for the flow of liquid during constant-rate expression from a finite thickness of liquid-saturated porous material with nonlinear properties. By varying a single nonlinearity parameter and a dimensionless expression rate, we systematically investigate the effect of nonlinearity and of an impermeable barrier (e.g. a piston). We illustrate the water profile shape and the water ratio deficit at the expression surface (e.g. a filter membrane) as a function of time.

The existence and uniqueness of a smooth global solution pair (u, p) which depends continuously upon the data are demonstrated under certain assumptions on the data.

A model for the combustion of a porous medium is considered for an infinite slab. The case of ignition by an initial temperature distribution is considered first. The influence of the initial data and parameters on the solution is inferred from the solution of a related ordinary differential equation. The case of ignition by heating on one side of the slab is then considered in the same manner.

There is presently considerable interest in the utilisation of microwave heating in areas such as cooking, sterilising, melting, smelting, sintering and drying. In general, such problems involve Maxwell's equations coupled with the heat equation, for which all thermal, electrical and magnetic properties of the material are nonlinear. The heat source arising from microwaves is proportional to the square of the modulus of the electric field intensity, and is known to increase with increasing temperature. In an attempt to find a simple model of microwave heating, we examine here simple transient temperature profiles corresponding to a heat source with spatial exponential decay but increasing with temperature, for which we assume either a power-law dependence or an exponential dependence. The spatial exponential decay is known to apply exactly when the electrical and magnetic properties of the material are assumed constant. A number of transient temperature profiles for this model are examined which arise from the invariance of the governing heat equation under simple one-parameter transformation groups. Some closed analytical expressions are obtained, but in general the resulting ordinary differential equations need to be solved numerically, and extensive numerical results are presented. For both models, these results indicate the appearance of moving fronts.

Fisher's equation, which describes a balance between linear diffusion and nonlinear reaction or multiplication, is studied numerically by a Petrov-Galerkin finite element method. The results show that any local initial disturbance can propagate with a constant limiting speed when time becomes sufficiently large. Both the limiting wave fronts and the limiting speed are determined by the system itself and are independent of the initial values. Comparing with other studies, the numerical scheme used in this paper is satisfactory with regard to its accuracy and stability. It has the advantage of being much more concise.

We derive local transformations mapping radially symmetric nonlinear diffusion equations with power law or exponential diffusivities into themselves or into other equations of a similar form. Both discrete and continuous transformations are considered. For the cases in which a continuous transformation exists, many additional forms of group-invariant solution may be constructed; some of these solutions may be written in closed form. Related invariance properties of some multidimensional diffusion equations are also exploited.

The controllable set of a controlled ordinary differential dynamic system to a given set is defined. Under certain reasonable conditions, the controllable set is characterised by a level set of the unique viscosity solution to some Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The result is used to determine the asymptotic stable set of nonlinear autonomous differential equations.

In this paper, a model for lateral dispersion in open-channel flow is studied involving a diffusion equation which has a nonlinear term describing the effect of buoyancy. The model is used to investigate the interaction of two buoyant pollutant plumes. An approximate analytic technique involving Hermite polynomials is applied to the resulting PDEs to reduce them to a system of ODEs for the centroids and widths of the two plumes. The ODEs are then solved numerically. A rich variety of behaviour occurs depending on the relative positions, widths and strengths of the initial discharges. It is found that for two plumes of equal strength and width discharged side-by-side, the plumes move apart and the rate of spreading is inhibited by their interaction, whereas when one plume is initially much wider than the other, both plumes tend to drift to the side of the narrower plume. Finally, the PDEs are solved numerically for two sets of initial conditions and a comparison is made with the ODE solutions. Agreement is found to be good.

We examine the piecewise-constant collocation method, with collocation points the mid-points of subintervals, for first-kind integral equations with logarithmic kernels on polygonal boundaries. Previously this method had been shown to converge subject to certain restrictions on the angles at the corners of the polygon. Here, by considering a slightly modified collocation method, we are able to remove any restrictions on these angles, and to generalise slightly the meshes which may be used. Moreover, the modification leads to new results on the convergence of preconditioned two-(or multi-) grid methods for solving the resultant linear systems.

Uncertainty principles like Heisenberg's assert an inequality obeyed by some measure of joint uncertainty associated with a function and its Fourier transform. The more groups under which that measure is invariant, the more that measure represents an intrinsic property of the underlying object represented by the given function. The Fourier transform is imbedded in a continuous group of operators, the fractional Fourier transforms, but the Heisenberg measure of overall spread turns out not to be invariant under that group. A new family is developed of measures that are invariant under the group of fractional Fourier transforms and that obey associated uncertainty principles. The first member corresponds to Heisenberg's measure but is generally smaller than his although equal to it in special cases.

The problem of finding critical initial data which separate conditions leading to blow-up from those which give solutions tending to the (stable) minimal solution is considered. New criteria for blow-up and global existence are found; these are equivalent to obtaining upper and lower bounds respectively for the set of critical initial data.

A mixed boundary-valued problem associated with the diffusion equation, that involves the physical problem of cooling of an infinite slab in a two-fluid medium, is solved completely by using the Wiener-Hopf technique. An analytical solution is derived for the temperature distribution at the quench fronts being created by two different layers of cold fluids having different cooling abilities moving on the upper surface of the slab at constant speed. Simple expressions are derived for the values of the sputtering temperatures of the slab at the points of contact with the respective layers, assuming one layer of the fluid to be of finite extent and the other of infinite extent. The main problem is solved through a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem of a special type, and the numerical results under certain special circumstances are obtained and presented in the form of a table.
