Growth, which is intrinsically linked to environmental conditions including temperature and food availability are highly variable both temporally and spatially. Estimates of growth rates of the Southern Ocean euphausiid Thysanoessa macrura are currently restricted to limited studies which rely upon repeated sampling and length-frequency analysis to quantify growth rates. The instantaneous growth method (IGR) was used to measure the growth rate of T. macrura successfully in the southern Kerulen Plateau region during summer, providing the first IGR parameters for the Southern Ocean euphausiid species. Results of the four-day IGR incubation indicate a period of low somatic growth for adult T. macrura. Males had a longer intermoult period (IMP) (62 days) than females (42 days), but the sexes exhibited similar daily growth rates of 0.011 mm day−1 and 0.012 mm day−1 respectively. Juveniles exhibited the fastest growth, with an IMP of 13 days and daily growth rate of 0.055 mm day−1 indicating a prolonged growth season, similar to the Antarctic krill E. superba. Consequently, we highlight the usability of the IGR method and strongly encourage its use in developing a comprehensive understanding of spatial and seasonal growth patterns of T. macrura.

The life history traits of bathydraconids, deep-living fishes distributed all around the Antarctic continent, are poorly known. In particular, very few data are available on the relatively rare genera Akarotaxis and Bathydraco. With the aim to fill this gap, sagittal otoliths and gonads were analysed to assess individual age and reproductive features of Akarotaxis nudiceps (Waite, 1916), Bathydraco macrolepis Boulenger 1907 and Bathydraco marri Norman, 1938 collected in the Weddell Sea. Based on the annual growth increment patterns, age estimates ranged between 6–11, 5–11 and 8–11 years for A. nudiceps, B. macrolepis and B. marri, respectively. Most of the gametogenetic processes could be described based on gonad histology for both sexes. Females shared the reproductive features commonly reported in notothenioids, such as group-synchronous ovary development and prolonged gametogenesis. Total fecundity estimates were comparable between the two species of Bathydraco (1500–2500 eggs/female), whereas that of Akarotaxis was one order of magnitude smaller (200–250 eggs/female). Consistently, the mean size of late vitellogenic oocytes showed an opposite trend, being 1.6–1.8 mm in Bathydraco and 2.2 mm in Akarotaxis.

Although Sims Island (73°17′S/78°33′W), a bedrock peak in Carroll Inlet on the English Coast of eastern Ellsworth Land (Fig. 1), had previously been observed and photographed from the air (e.g. Rowley & Thomson 1990, fig. C.6.2), no landing had been made prior to the present study. Based on proximity and apparent lithological similarities, the island was thought likely to consist of alkaline volcanic rocks similar to those exposed on nearby Snow Nunataks (Fig. 1; e.g. Rowley & Thomson 1990). Smellie (1999) tentatively included it the Bellingshausen Sea Volcanic Group (BSVG), which consists of Miocene-Recent alkaline volcanic outcrops scattered across Alexander Island and eastern Ellsworth Land. More specifically, he provisionally assigned it to the Mount Benkert Formation (MBF), a probable subglacial volcanic succession exposed on three of the four Snow Nunataks. This note is based on observations made and samples collected during a short visit to Sims Island on 6 March 1996.

Proteases are widely used in industrial processes, and the discovery of new, more kinetically efficient proteases can have a positive impact on industry. Enzymes from Antarctic microorganisms exhibit cold-adaptive properties, making them useful in biotechnology. The cold and harsh environment of Antarctica makes it a valuable source for new biotechnologically related enzymes. In this study, we characterized two cold-adapted proteases purified from Pseudoalteromonas issachenkonii P14M1-4 and Flavobacterium frigidimaris ANT34-7, isolated from King George Island, Antarctica, and compared these with proteases from the non-cold-adapted bacteria Bacillus licheniformis and Geobacillus stearothermophilus. The best temperature growing conditions were used for protease purification and characterization. The protease from P. issachenkonii P14M1-4 was identified as a 40–43 kDa metal-dependent subtilisin-like serine protease and the protease from F. frigidimaris ANT34-7 was identified as a 28 kDa metalloprotease. The enzymes showed an optimum temperature of between 35°C and 40°C and an optimum pH in the neutral to alkaline range. Their activation energies, catalytic constants and growth capacities at different temperatures categorize them as cold-adapted enzymes. We conclude that the characteristics exhibited by these proteases make them useful for biotechnological purposes requiring high activity at low temperatures. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first characterization of a cold-adapted protease from F. frigidimaris.

New structural data from the northern Antarctic Peninsula suggest that reverse faults and folds affecting the Pedersen Nunatak beds of the upper Mesozoic–Lower Cenozoic Larsen Basin succession were produced by transpressional forces acting parallel to the Weddell Sea coast of the Antarctic Peninsula during mid-Cretaceous compression of the Larsen Basin. At Pedersen Nunatak, Larsen Basin rocks are deformed into a series of synclines and anticlines that are cut by reverse faults.

Ozone concentrations in the atmospheric surface layer above the Weddell Sea during the Antarctic spring season of 1989 varied significantly. Lower levels of ozone were associated with colder Antarctic air masses and higher values with warmer mid-latitude air. The lowest ozone concentration (1 to 2 ppbv) was measured in the centre of a low pressure system. A definite diurnal variation of tropospheric ozone observed during clear days with low total ozone amount (177 matm cm) may be interpreted as a consequence of the occurrence of photochemical reactions under conditions of increased ultraviolet solar radiation.

Sulphide-bearing quartz veins were first observed on Hurd Peninsula, Livingston Island, at Henry Bluff in 1958 (Hobbs 1968). Subsequent mapping of the host Miers Bluff Formation (MBF) in western Hurd Peninsula either did not record veining or was ambiguous as to its distribution, scale of development and genesis (for review see Pride et al. 1990).

In 2021, Brazilian scientific research in Antarctica will reach its 40 anniversary, and in that period it has experienced good and bad times. How has Brazilian scientific research evolved since its first scientific mission to Antarctica? What were the conditions that enabled this research? How will Brazilian researchers work in the brand-new scientific station? Using an interdisciplinary approach, this article identifies tipping points and the national policy network that led to unstable funding policies. This article highlights four phases of Brazilian Antarctic science and states that there is a clear disconnect between the geopolitical and scientific priorities on one side and the political priorities, including the executive and the legislative powers, on the other.

Antarctic krill are the dominant metazoan in the Southern Ocean in terms of biomass; however, their wide and patchy distribution means that estimates of their biomass are still uncertain. Most currently employed methods do not sample the upper surface layers, yet historical records indicate that large surface swarms can change the water colour. Ocean colour satellites are able to measure the surface ocean synoptically and should theoretically provide a means for detecting and measuring surface krill swarms. Before we can assess the feasibility of remote detection, more must be known about the reflectance spectra of krill. Here, we measure the reflectance spectral signature of Antarctic krill collected in situ from the Scotia Sea and compare it to that of in situ water. Using a spectroradiometer, we measure a strong absorption feature between 500 and 550 nm, which corresponds to the pigment astaxanthin, and high reflectance in the 600–700 nm range due to the krill's red colouration. We find that the spectra of seawater containing krill is significantly different from seawater only. We conclude that it is tractable to detect high-density swarms of krill remotely using platforms such as optical satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles, and further steps to carry out ground-truthing campaigns are now warranted.

In order to reconstruct past environmental conditions along the north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula, we documented changes in grain size, grain roundness, onlap as seen in ground-penetrating radar reflection profiles and ice-rafted debris on a set of 36 raised beaches developed over the last ~7.7 ± 0.9 ka on Joinville Island. The most pronounced changes in beach character occur at ~2.7–3.0 ka. At this time, there appears to have been a reintroduction of less rounded material, the development of stratification within individual beach ridges, an introduction of seaweed and limpets to the beach deposits, a change in clast provenance (although slightly earlier than the change in cobble roundness) and a shallowing of the overall beach plain slope. Prolonged cooling associated with the Neoglacial period may have contributed to these changes, as the readvance of glaciers could have changed the provenance of the beach deposits and introduced more material, leading to the change in roundness of the beach cobbles and the overall slope of the beach plain. This study suggests that late Holocene environmental change left a measurable impact on the coastal zone of Antarctica.

The food and energy requirements of adult emperor penguins parenting chicks were examined at Auster (about 11 000 pairs) and Taylor Glacier (about 2900 pairs) colonies during the winter, spring and summer of 1988. Tritiated water-derived estimates of food consumption trebled during the five-month period of chick care, ranging from 2.3 kg d−1 in winter when chicks were <5% of adult mass, to 6.3 kg d−1 in summer, when chicks represented 40–50% of adult mass. These food consumption rates were equivalent to the acquisition of 11.4 MJ d−1 and 33.4 MJ d−1 metabolizable energy in winter and summer respectively. Chick provisioning was not accompanied by a major increase in food consumption by adults. Adults assimilated 84–92% of their daily food intake themselves and retained the remainder for the chick. The food ration of chick for the three seasons (42 kg) constituted only about 9.5% of adult maintenance requirements during the same period. Adults consumed an estimated 482 kg of food (including the ration for the chick), which amounted to about 10 700 t and 2800 t of fish and squid consumed by the breeding populations at Auster and Taylor Glacier, respectively.

The Antarctic gastropod Dickdellia labioflecta (Dell, 1990) (originally described as Laevilittorina (Corneolittorina) labioflecta) is an obligate parasite of pycnogonids, which exploits their body fluids through the cuticular gland holes (Lehmann et al. 2007) and lays its eggs on the pycnogonid's legs where embryos complete their life cycle (Hedgpeth 1964, Sirenko 2000, Lehmann et al. 2007). The ecology of D. labioflecta appears to be unique, as no other examples of such a specialized parasitic behaviour on pycnogonids are known. This life-style and the related anatomical specializations (gut and digestive gland morphology), prompted the erection of a new genus, Dickdellia Warén & Hain, 1996 provisionally included in the family Zerotulidae (Warén & Hain 1996). Although information is quite scant, to date, two pycnogonid host species are known for Dickdellia: Colossendeis megalonyx megalonyx Fry & Hedgpeth, 1969 (Lehmann et al. 2007) and Nymphon isabellae Turpaeva, 2000 (Sirenko 2000).

The Antarctic Treaty System requires that the effects of potential human disturbance be evaluated, such as through the development and evaluation of Initial and Comprehensive Environmental Evaluations (IEEs and CEEs), and through the implementation of Management Plans for Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) and Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMAs). The effectiveness of these management processes hinges on the quality and transparency of the data presented, particularly because independent validation is often difficult or impossible due to the financial and logistical challenges of working in the Antarctic. In a review of these documents and their treatment of wildlife survey data, we find that the basic elements of best data practices are often not followed; biological data are often uncited or out-of-date and rarely include estimates of uncertainty that would allow any subsequent changes in the distribution or abundance of wildlife to be rigorously assessed. We propose a set of data management and use standards for Antarctic biological data to improve the transparency and quality of these evaluations and to facilitate improved assessment of both immediate and long-term impacts of human activities in the Antarctic.

In 1980, at the invitation of Australia, the first Chinese scientists went to Antarctica. China was therefore a relative ‘latecomer’ to engage in Antarctic science. In the period since its first Antarctic expedition in 1984, China's presence in Antarctica has expanded both in terms of its logistics and infrastructure and its scientific research. This paper outlines the development of China's national Antarctic programmes under the influence of corresponding national policies from the late 1970s to the present, noting the application of various scientific disciplines to Antarctic fields. The paper outlines and analyses the broadening and deepening of China's Antarctic science research, infrastructure and engagement.

Palaeoenvironmental history is reconstructed from diatoms in two sediment cores, GC01-PW02 and GC03-PW02, recovered from Powell Basin, Antarctica. A total of 43 species belonging to 21 genera are identified from GC01-PW02. A total of 61 species belonging to 27 genera are identified from GC03-PW02. The number of diatom valves g-1 of dry sediment ranges from 0.1–48.3 × 106 valves g-1. Based on diatom abundance, six assemblage zones were identified from GC01-PW02, and five diatom zones were identified from GC03-PW02. Barren intervals represent glacial periods, while intervals with higher diatom abundances were deposited during interglacial periods and reduced sea ice cover. The occurrence of Rouxia leventerae only within the deepest zone of each of the cores indicates that the core sediments were deposited since marine isotope stage (MIS) 6.

The first fossil avian feather from Antarctica is reported here, from the early to middle Eocene Fossil Hill Formation at Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. Characteristics such as its form, asymmetry of vanes, closed-pennaceous vanes with barbules and a deep ventral groove indicate that the feather was used for flight. The site from which the feather was collected is known to yield a variety of well-preserved trace fossils, palaeobotanical and palaeoenvironmental remains, suggesting a shorebird ecotype for the owner of this feather, certainly belonging to a Neornithes. The continental position, preservation as an external mould and type of feather makes this specimen a novel and an exceedingly rare record.

Sediment trap arrays were deployed in Brialmont Cove and Andvord Bay, eastern Gerlache Strait, from December 2001–March 2003. The recovered sediments (representing instantaneous deposition from the viewpoint of luminescence dating) encompass all the annual and local glaciomarine depositional processes. Magnetic susceptibility profiles were used to infer seasonality in the trap cores, and thus to select subsamples for luminescence measurements. Multi-aliquot infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) apparent ages were used to assess the effectiveness of ‘clock zeroing’ (by daylight) of light sensitive luminescence within fine silt polymineral samples from each trap depth. IRSL apparent ages for 24 samples indicate that the largest age-depth differences occur with the autumn season samples at both trap sites, suggesting a previously unrecognized and regional (within the Gerlache Strait) change in depositional controls in the autumn compared to other seasons. The apparent ages also indicate some differences between the fjords, and a more complex oceanographic regime at Andvord Bay than at Brialmont Cove. Dry-mass sediment fluxes varied from 0.4 to 0.7 g cm-2 yr-1, with the largest flux at Brialmont Cove (∼0.7 g cm-2 yr-1) occurring in the bottom trap, whereas at Andvord Bay, the largest flux (∼0.6 g cm-2 yr-1) occurred in the middle trap (∼45 m above seafloor).

Observer-based studies often underestimate key ecological parameters. Here a fresh approach was used to analyse six years (2006–11) of attendance cycles to estimate foraging trip lengths of a lactating flipper-tagged otariid: subantarctic fur seals at Marion Island. Multi-state mark-recapture models were used to calculate detection failures of females, correct estimates accordingly, and investigate the effects of year, season, pup sex and the presence of a telemetry device on attendance cycle parameters. There were no differences between corrected and uncorrected attendance data. This is attributed to the high capture probability across all seasons (range: 83–98%). This illustrates that observer-based studies are useful to augment telemetry studies. Only season and pup sex had a significant impact on female provisioning rates. In winter, foraging trip durations were longer (t-value=25.22, P<0.0001) and attendance durations shorter (t-value=-2.15, P=0.01) than during summer. Females with female pups spent a higher proportion of their time on land (χ2=6.6, P<0.05). Male pups have higher growth demands and are larger which suggests they can deplete female milk-stores faster.
