Glaciological measurements from Austfonna on Nordaustlandet, Svalbard, are needed as a prerequisite to mathematical modelling of ice-mass dynamics. Several upper and lower boundary conditions are set out in detail for a 670 km2 drainage basin (Basin 5) and are generalized to the whole ice cap where possible. The ice surface and bed topography are mapped for Basin 5. 30% of the basin lies below sea-level. Bed elevations range from -100 m to over 300 m, and maximum ice thickness is >500 m. A 21 km long trilateral network of stakes provides velocity and strain-rate data. Maximum ice-surface velocity is 47 m a−1 and maximum strain-rate is 0.64 × 10−2 a−1. Snow-line migration with time is mapped from digital Landsat MSS data, and mass-balance estimates are used to calculate balance velocities. At the equilibrium line, about 300–350 m in elevation, balance velocity and observed ice-surface velocity are comparable, indicating that the basin is approximately in balance. A first approximation is given for the rate of iceberg calving from the tide-water basin margins. Enhanced Landsat imagery also shows that turbid melt-water plumes of subglacial origin flow from the terminal ice cliffs, indicating that at least parts of the ice-cap margin are at the melting point. The margins of Basin 5, grounded below present sea-level, are likely to be underlain by deformable sediments, but inland the nature of the substrate is unknown.

We have reconstructed temperature changes over the past 15 000 years from ice-core data in Antarctica. We used measurements of the D/H isotope ratio in ice as a proxy of temperature for central sites (Vostok, Dome C and Komsomolskaya; as well as coastal sites (D47, D15 and D10). First, we examined the dating of each core and built up a common temporal framework for the ensemble of the data. Secondly, we addressed the problem of inferring small-amplitude temperature fluctuations from the isotope data, in the light of noise-generating mechanisms involved in snow deposition. Temperature was reconstructed so as to minimize distortion created by the sampling of ice cores in the field. The seven ice cores studied yield an average temperature curve which can be put in perspective with nearby paleoclimatic records. The early Holocene experienced climates warmer than today by 1-2°C. The late Holocene period shows more discernible, shorter-duration, temperature fluctuations, superimposed on a fairly stable "base-line" temperature.

Snow avalanches occur in the mountains of all continents and climatic zones. The lower boundary of avalanche distribution rises from sea level in polar and temperate zones to 6000 m in the tropics. Four altitudinal belts of avalanching are distinguished: (I) permanent snow; (II) stable seasonal snow cover; (III) unstable snow cover; and (IV) rare snowfalls. Most avalanche-danger areas of the world belong to the stable seasonal snow-cover bell.

Using data from a GFDL Q-flux Model, we estimated possible changes of the main characteristics of the avalanche regime in the Northern Hemisphere: depth of snow cover, duration of the avalanche-prone period and number of days with avalanche-prone snowfalls. At the beginning of the twenty-first Century, there will likely be a smoothing of the sharp differences in avalanche activity between various mountain regions of the World. Avalanche activity should be less in the most active regions and it is likely to increase in regions with low avalanche activity.

Radio echo-soundings obtained during joint programmes of the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), and the Technical University of Denmark (TUD) have provided sufficient data of good quality to map driving stress over approximately one half of the Antarctic ice sheet. Computerized averaging of data over 1 degree of latitude squares has largely eliminated local effects of longitudinal stress variations on surface slope. Methods of data handling are outlined. Variations in driving stresses between different regions are discussed in relation to the balancing restraining forces. These are primarily related to ice velocity and thickness, bedrock topography, the presence of basal water and possibly to the development of easy-glide fabric in the ice mass, to the temperature of basal ice layers, and to the excess hydrostatic pressure in areas where ice rests on bedrock well below sea-level.

The deep ice-sheet coring (DISC) drill developed by Ice Coring and Drilling Services under contract to the US National Science Foundation is an electromechanical drill designed to take 122 mm ice cores to depths of 4000 m. Electronic, electrical and control systems are major aspects of the DISC drill. The drill sonde, the down-hole portion of the drill system, requires approximately 5 kW of d.c. power for the cutter and drill motors and instrumentation. Power is transmitted via a drill cable from a modified, commercially available surface d.c. power supply operating at 1000V to power modules in the sonde instrumentation section. These modules regulate the power to the motors to 300 V d.c. and to lower voltages for the instrumentation and control electronics. Cutter and pump motors are controlled by electronics that include motor controllers. There are 20 distinct sensors in the drill sonde which measure conditions such as hole fluid temperature, motor fluid temperature, drill orientation, etc. On-board electronics facilitate communication of control commands and data between the surface and the drill sonde. Electronics also play an integral part in the operation of surface equipment such as the winch in raising and lowering the sonde in the borehole. Overall control of the DISC drill system is provided by a PC-based supervisory control system that allows the drill operators to monitor and control all aspects of the drilling operation.

A high-resolution primitive equation ocean model has been coupled to a dynamic/thermodynamic sea-ice model and applied to a region of the Southern Ocean south of Australia. The model is found to be very sensitive to the surface fresh-water flux! A stable seasonal cycle of sea-ice advance and retreat is simulated only for sufficient surface fresh-water fluxes. For fresh-water fluxes below a threshold value of around 40 cm a−1 the coupled system enters a thermal mode characterised by vertical homogeneity of the oceanic temperature and salinity fields. Such an ocean has a surface temperature that is too warm for a sea-ice cover to develop. Spatial and temporal variability of the oceanic heat llux into the upper model layer iS examined for the stable simulations. High values of this oceanic heat flux (~40Wm−2) occur during the sea-ice formation period (March-June), with values as low as 5 wM−2 occurring in November. The source of this heat is primarily convective, a process induced by brine rejection during ice growth.

All-wave albedo and spectral albedo data were collected over snow-covered pack-ice floes during summer 1999 (January and February) in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Temporal variation of the all-wave albedo and spectral albedo was measured from the northern edge to the southern edge of the pack ice along three lines of longitude: 165° W, 150° Wand 135° W. Snow depth, snow-cover stratification, snow-temperature profiles, and grain-size and morphology were also documented. It was observed that daily-averaged albedos were 0.70−0.86 for cloudy conditions over the pack ice. Only two sets of daily-averaged albedo were collected for clear-sky conditions (0.788 and 0:825). Albedo was lower at the marginal edges of the pack ice than in the central pack ice. Albedo was higher over the southern part of the central pack ice than over the northern part. Clear- and cloudy-sky albedos measured on the same site indicate that the average increase in albedo due to clouds is 1.4% (maximum 4.0%). Spectral albedos of the pack-ice floes were similar under clear-sky and cloudy conditions. Both are mainly controlled by the snow grain-size, especially in the top snow layer. All-wave albedos derived from measured visible and near-infrared spectral albedos, with extrapolation to ultraviolet and shortwave infrared regions for both clear- and cloudy-sky conditions, agreed well with all-wave albedos from direct measurements.

Flow records of meltwater runoff provide information about the movement of water through the ice and about glacial ablation. This study indicates that the lag time required for a maximum correlation between daily discharge and air temperature, and the sensitivity of meltwater response to air temperature, changes during the ablation period for different proportions of the base flow. To examine how glaciers respond to climatic changes and the hydrological characteristics of the large glaciers in the Tuomuer mountain area, western China, observations have been undertaken in this region since June 2003. By means of correlation and cross-spectral analysis, the relationship between air temperature and meltwater runoff in different months of the ablation period (May–September) on Keqikaer glacier in 2004 has been evaluated. Data have been selected from the 1st to the 30th for every month, and the calculated hourly discharges of the meltwater runoff for each day were utilized. From these data we conclude that for Keqikaer glacier the meltwater runoff has a greater sensitivity to air temperature in May, July and August than in June and September; however, the lag time is shorter in June, July and August than it is in May and September.

The morphology of the Lichen Hills in the upper section of Rennick Glacier, Victoria Land, Antarctica, is summarised as follows: (a) a top surface on the volcanic rocks with scattered erratic blocks; (b) an exhumed Kukri Peneplain, sculptured with roches moutonnees with striae and crescentic gouges on which lie moraines and patches of drift of mainly volcanic rocks; (c) a granitic bedrock eroded by glaciers into sharp peaks and cirques on top of which there is a glacial drift attributable to ancient blue-ice areas higher than those observed at present and which may be correlated with the Terra Nova drift (Late Wisconsin); (d) various Holocene ice-cored moraines that are pushed to the lee side of the nunataks arid are often banded in strips of different lithology. The bands of the Holocene moraines are related to the rock complexes that became exposed from the ice during the lowering of the surface of the glacier Analysis of the lithology and pattern of the supraglacial debris, as well as of the blue-ice areas, allows us to construct a depositional model for the moraines, and to relate the glacial drift to blue-ice areas existing since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).The proposed model shows the different stages of recession of upper Rennick Glacier that are also valid for similar situations observed in northern Victoria Land. A surface lowering of upper Rennick Glacier of several hundred metres shows that significant changes have occurred at the Pacific edge of the East Antarctic ice sheet since the LGM.

A hydrometeorological model designed for climatological applications with monthly time-steps and 100 m altitude intervals was calibrated with runoff and climate data on five small, glacierized basins in the Silvretta mountains, Austria (46°55’ N, 10° 10’ E). These basins are exposed to similar synoptic weather conditions but differ in their altitude ranges and glacier covers, enabling the model to be tested for a variety of physical conditions. The structure of the model, the data input and the calibration and tuning procedures are described. Sensitivities of the model to temperature and precipitation changes are derived and applied to annual and decadal values of T and P, respectively. Judged by the difference between observed and calculated sums of runoff, simulation of decadal values is satisfactory, while annual simulations and measurements have rms differences of the order of 200 mm.

The radiative-transfer model developed by Zwally (1977) is modified and coupled to a one-dimensional time-dependent temperature model, to calculate the seasonal variation in brightness temperature. By comparing this with observed records, the radiative properties of firn can be determined. By retaining scattering as a source term in the radiative transfer function, agreement between model-derived scattering and absorption coefficients and those calculated from the Mie/Rayleigh scattering theory can be obtained. The horizontal brightness temperature is not linked to the vertical one through a constant power reflection coefficient.

Data from the Filchner V Campaign were used to investigate the mass-balance conditions in the southeastern Ronne Ice Shelf (RIS), Antarctica. Radio-echo sounding and seismic measurements over this area show a maximum ice thickness of >2000 m close to the grounding line of Foundation Ice Stream. The measurements also revealed that the position of this grounding line is 40 km further south than previously thought. New mass-flux calculations result in an estimate of 51 km3 a−1 for the ice-stream transport from the ice sheet into the eastern ice shelf. The Mollereisstrom (MES), west of Foundation Ice Stream, shows a maximum ice thickness of 1100-1200 m in the grounding-line area and a mass flux of 23 km3 a−1.

Assuming steady-state conditions, mass-balance calculations based on the new data result in a mean melt rate of about 1 ma−1 at the ice-shelf base for the entire southeastern part of the RIS. The melt rate in the grounding-line area of Foundation Ice Stream exceeds 9 m a−1. In contrast, other ice streams draining into the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf show maximum melt rates from 1-2 ma-1. (MES) to 4 ma−1 (Rutford Ice Stream). Our calculations indicate that nearly all of the ice deposited in the drainage area of the eastern RIS on the ice sheet does not reach the ice-shelf front as original meteoric ice, but is melted at the ice-shelf base.

A one-dimensional model problem for computation of the age field in ice sheets, which is of great importance for dating deep ice cores, is considered. the corresponding partial differential equation (PDE) is of purely advective (hyperbolic) type, which is notoriously difficult to solve numerically. By integrating the PDE over a space–time element in the sense of a finite-volume approach, a general difference equation is constructed from which a hierarchy of solution schemes can be derived. Iteration rules are given explicitly for central differences, first-, second- and third-order (QUICK) upstreaming as well as modified TVD Lax–Friedrichs schemes (TVDLFs). the performance of these schemes in terms of convergence and accuracy is discussed. Second-order upstreaming, themodifiedTVDLF scheme with Minmod slope limiter and, with limitations of the accuracy directly at the base, first-order upstreaming prove to be the most suitable for numerical age computations in ice-sheet models.

On time-scales of less than about 100 years, when the ice topography can be considered stationary, the extent of Antarctic blue-ice areas is governed mainly by the surface mass balance. In and near high-elevation blue-ice areas, ablation is due entirely to sublimation. An estimate of the mass-balance profile ranging from a blue-ice area to the adjacent snow surface is presented. By considering changes in sublimation induced by variations in local climate, the deviation from the mass-balance profile is evaluated. It is concluded that even for considerable changes in local climate these deviations remain relatively small and have only little effect on the extent of a blue-ice area. This can be attributed mainly to the steep mass-balance profile.

Weak layers such as buried surface hoar or depth hoar frequently form the failure plane of slab avalanches. Therefore, the mechanical properties of such layers in relation to their snow structure have been investigated. Since it is difficult to transport samples containing a weak layer into cold rooms, the mechanical measurements have to be made in situ.

We investigate strain-rate dependency of shear strength by measuring concurrently strength, deformation and acceleration, using a digital force gauge attached to a 0.05 m2 shear frame to which an accelerometer and a displacement sensor are fixed. In doing so, a dynamic force comparable to a driving skier is applied. The measurements cover a strain-rate range 10-2 to 1 s-1. The samples fail in a brittle manner. The shear-strength values cover the range 0.2–2.8 kPa. The dataset is also used to approximate the coefficient G, the shear modulus, for different weak layers.

The snow structure has been analysed macroscopically in the field and for some layers representative snow samples have been extracted in order to prepare, in the cold laboratory, single-sided serial planes with cuts every 0.1 mm recorded by video. The analysis of these snow samples should have given the relation between some mechanical properties (strength, strain) and the structural properties. Due to basic problems in defining the connection between complex snow grains (e.g. surface hoar), we were unable to complete this part in due time. Only preliminary results on this aspect are presented here. Based on our long-term database, containing macroscopic structural and strength data of weak layers, a relationship between snow type and shear strength has been established.

Surface mass-balance studies and climatic records from firn cores show remarkable differences between the east and west sides of the Lambert Glacier basin (LGB). The spatial distribution of the surface accumulation is influenced by the atmospheric moisture flux, and by the surface wind field, which is largely determined by topography. Atmospheric water-vapor budget data for the ice-sheet sector covering the basin (45–90˚ E) show that on the east side of the LGB the moisture flux is poleward, averaging 18 kgm–1 s–1 in 1988, while for the west side it is Equatorward, averaging 5 kgm–1 s–1. A similar pattern, but with much lower transport of vapor flux, is seen across 70˚ S. Two firn cores from the east side of the basin and two from the west side were analyzed to determine accumulation-rate and temperature-proxy variations for the past 50 years. The trends were opposite on the different sides of the basin. Similar opposing trends are seen in meteorological records from Davis and Mawson coastal stations, situated on the east and west sides of the LGB respectively. There is a good correlation between the accumulation/18O record in ice cores from the eastern LGB and the sea-level pressure (obtained from the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction/US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) re-analyses) of a Southern Indian Ocean low (SIOL), but not between the SIOL and the records from the western LGB. This study reveals that variations in local circulation could alter at least the annual to decadal time-scale climate records, and may result in completely different climate histories between adjacent areas.

The radiative-transfer theory and the Rayleigh scattering model were used to obtain the microwave brightness temperatures from dry snowpacks on the ground, which was modelled by a scattering dielectric layer and an underlying homogeneous half-space. The total radio brightness at the radiometer was the sum of the direct and diffuse radiation field intensities. The result of the model application was in good agreement with the observational data, which were obtained through the airborne experiments for the MOS-1 Verification Program around Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, in February 1988.

We evaluated the contribution of Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) passive-microwave data to the monitoring of spatial and temporal variability of snow cover in the Churchill area, Manitoba, Canada. Because of the coarse spatial resolution of current passive-microwave sensors, the estimation of snow water equivalent using empirical equations with these instruments is largely compromised in complex areas such as Churchill (forest–tundra ecotone). However, with its high frequency of observations and the availability of a long time series (1988–99), passive-microwave data from the SSM/I radiometer remain a very valuable tool for monitoring the temporal evolution of snow cover at various spatial scales. Through winter 1997/98, we first examined the passive-microwave signatures at the local scale and we identified the major stages of the snow period. Principal-component analysis (PCA) applied on spectral-difference (Tb(19H) - Tb(37H))time series (1988–99) enabled us to identify spatio-temporal effects over a large area. PCA also permitted the extraction of indices of relevance for monitoring climatic variability and climate change (annual snow-cover duration, dates of snow-cover appearance and disappearance).

The areal distribution of snow cover and the variability of its characteristics were investigated at various locations in the eastern Swiss Alps. An areal energy-balance (AEB) model was used to calculate the predominant energy fluxes at the snow–atmosphere interface based on automatic meteorological measurements as input. By coupling the AEB model with a one-dimensional, physically based mass and energy-balance model of the snowpack, temperature distribution as well as energy and mass flow in the snowpack were simulated at three different locations in the topographically complex environment at Weissfluhjoch-Davos, 2540 m a.s.l. On a horizontal test site, calculated energy fluxes and characteristics of the snow cover are in good agreement with their measured counterparts. On inclined slopes, the temperature distribution is well represented by the coupled models, but the snow depth and density are not yet satisfactorily simulated. This discrepancy may be attributed to inhomogeneous accumulation and deposition of snow on the weather and lee sides.

The association of the European “Little Ice Age” (1550- 1850; Lamb, 1982) with a period of significantly reduced solar activity (Eddy, 1976) suggests a significant mechanism of climate variation remains to be determined. Recent optical observations of connections between the tops of thunderstorm systems and altitudes of 70-90 km (Sentman and Wescott, 1996) demonstrate a linkage between the troposphere and the lower reaches of the ionosphere. If thunderstorm development is affecled by its electrical environment, then solar modulation of the geoelectric field provides a viable solar-variability-climate mechanism (see, e.g., Tinsley 1996). The high, dry Antarctic plateau provides an ideal site for demonstrating that solar variability can influence the geoelectric field. in this paper, we present evidence that the geoelectric field at Vostok is modulated by the duskward component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF By) when Vostok rotates under the region magnetically linked to the dayside interaction region between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field.
