According to geographic information system-based modelling, the Muragl glacier forefield situated in the St Moritz area, eastern Swiss Alps, lies in a potential permafrost area. As an attempt to verify spatial modelling, BTS (bottom temperature of the winter snow cover) measurements, geoelectrical soundings and geomorphological mapping were carried out in order to investigate the present-day permafrost and ground-ice distribution in this forefield. Recent geomorphodynamic processes in the steep upper slopes of the cirque include small debris flows and several slides related to the occurrence of ground ice. The occurrence of fluted moraines and a well-developed push moraine provides geomorphological evidence for a complex thermal regime of the former Muragl glacier, with cold marginal parts frozen to the bed, and warm-based ice in more central parts where fluted moraines could develop. Details of the inferred glacier/permafrost interaction are difficult to interpret. The results of field measurements (BTS and geoelectrical soundings) in the recently deglaciated forefield indicate the local occurrence of permafrost in the forefield and in the push moraine. In most parts of the forefield, permafrost may be assumed to be a former subglacial occurrence. However, new permafrost formation in the recently deglaciated forefield cannot be excluded.

A Fast Ice Prediction System (FIPS) was constructed and is the first regional land-fast sea-ice forecasting system for the Antarctic. FIPS had two components: (1) near-real-time information on the ice-covered area from MODIS and SAR imagery that revealed, tidal cracks, ridged and rafted ice regions; (2) a high-resolution 1-D thermodynamic snow and ice model (HIGHTSI) that was extended to perform a 2-D simulation on snow and ice evolution using atmospheric forcing from ECMWF: either using ERA-Interim reanalysis (in hindcast mode) or HERS operational 10-day predictions (in forecast mode). A hindcast experiment for the 2015 season was in good agreement with field observations, with a mean bias of 0.14 ± 0.07 m and a correlation coefficient of 0.98 for modeled ice thickness. The errors are largely caused by a cold bias in the atmospheric forcing. The thick snow cover during the 2015 season led to modeled formation of extensive snow ice and superimposed ice. The first FIPS operational service was performed during the 2017/18 season. The system predicted a realistic ice thickness and onset of snow surface melt as well as the area of internal ice melt. The model results on the snow and ice properties were considered by the captain of R/V Xuelong when optimizing a low-risk route for on-ice transportation through fast ice to the coastal Zhongshan Station.

Conditions for passive folding near ice-sheet centers are derived treating the ice as an anisotropic viscous medium. Vertical uniaxial compression at a dome, or pure shear stress near a ridge divide, both tend to stretch and flatten folds, while horizontal simple shear deformation tends to overturn folds. Overturned folding is likely in a given vicinity in a steady-state flow field, if the initial slope of a layer disturbance exceeds the ratio of compressive/extensive deformation to shear deformation. Analytical equations for particle tracks in steady state allow us to model the evolution of layers with initial slope disturbances (``wrinkles’’). the effects of anisotropy are explored using an analytical solution for the strain rate as a function of a vertically symmetric c-axis orientation distribution, called a cone fabric. Stronger anisotropy (small cone angle) makes the material softer in horizontal shear, and facilitates folding, i.e. elements with smaller slopes can be overturned for the same stress. the relation between anisotropy and folding is complicated by the fact that, for a range of cone angles, the material is also softer in compression, which opposes folding. Simulating a layer with spatially variable tilt of cone symmetry axes, and accounting for fabric development, demonstrates that variations in the fabric cause localized flow variations that could create the initial perturbations.

Three debris-bearing ice facies were recognized at the base of Suess Glacier, a cold-based glacier damming a lake in Taylor Valley, South Victoria Land, Antarctica. These facies are termed “amber ice”,“solid facies” and “basal stratified facies”. This paper uses stable-isotope composition (δD and δ18O), gas content and gas composition (CO2, O2 and N2) to develop an understanding of the processes responsible for the formation of these facies. The basal ice is characterized by a striking difference in ice properties between the innermost end of a 25 m long tunnel dug 200 m upstream from the glacier front and the front itself. At the glacier front, co-isotopic data plot along a well-defined freezing slope (S = 5.6), whereas, inside the tunnel, the isotopic data offset from the freezing slope and from the local meteoric water-line (which has a slope of 8.2). CO2 concentrations rise from a minimum of about 1000 ppmv in the tunnel to about 220000ppmv at the front. Taken together, these characteristics strongly suggest an increasing contribution of liquid water in the formation of basal ice towards the glacier terminus. We therefore conclude that visually similar basal ice facies can have different origins.

Large-scale furrows occurring in unconsolidated Quaternary sediments on the Labrador Shelf are considered to be gouge marks of bottom-dragging icebergs. Side-scan sonograph mosaics from the northern Labrador Shelf were constructed for two bathymetric interbank areas. They reveal that both relict ice bottom gouging and modern iceberg scouring have taken place at water depths greater than 180 m. The recent scours are linear to curvilinear to crater-like in form, with average widths of 30 m at a mean scour depth of 5 m and lengths in excess of 3 km. The dominant scour trend is north-south, reflecting the Labrador Current.

Impedance of icebergs by bottom interaction is primarily a function of the gross iceberg size and shape, sediment encountered by the keel, and prevailing current. For modern scouring, frequencies of detectable impact decrease exponentially with increasing scour depth, and scour depth is inversely proportional to the sediment shear and compressive strengths.

Patriot Hills is located at 80˚18’ S, 81˚22’W, at the southernmost end of the Heritage Range, Ellsworth Mountains, West Antarctica. A comparison of glacier elevation data and ice velocities obtained by the differential global positioning system in the period 1996–97 is presented. Ablation/accumulation rates measured at a network of stakes in Horseshoe Valley show average accumulation of 70 kg m–2 a–1 in the central part of the valley, and a maximum ablation of ∼170 kg m–2 a–1 at the edge of the blue-ice area, close to Patriot Hills. Changes in the surface elevation of the glacier measured at 81 stakes in the period 1995–97 show a mean thickening of +0.43±0.42ma–1, which, considering the uncertainties, indicates that the ice sheet around Patriot Hills is in near steady state. Surface velocities, in combination with ice thicknesses obtained by ground-based radio-echo sounding, are used to compute the ice flux across the Horseshoe Valley transect. A total outflow of 0.44 ±0.08km3 a–1 is obtained. Considering a catchment area for Horseshoe Valley of 1087 km2 upstream from the flow transect, and a net accumulation rate of 100 kg m–2 a–1, a total input of 0.11 ±0.04km3 a–1 by snow accumulation is obtained. Accepting a near-equilibrium condition for the ice sheet, the flux difference, i.e. 0.33 km3 a–1, must be supplied by flow from the inland ice sheet through ice cliffs located in mountain gaps in the Heritage Range. If Horseshoe Valley is not in steady state but is thickening, the positive mass balance could be due to increased snow accumulation or enhanced ice flow from the interior of the ice sheet. New data are needed to elucidate this.

A large set of ice ablation data from a glacier in the French Alps is used to investigate the sensitivity of ice melting to solar radiation and temperature. The data come from 7 years of observations on a small network of 16 stakes set up on Glacier de Saint-Sorlin. The high spatial variability of ice ablation is shown to be strongly dependent on potential solar radiation. On the other hand, temporal variations are highly correlated with air temperatures measured both at a nearby and at a remote meteorological station, but poorly correlated with incoming shortwave radiation measured at an automatic weather station located close to the glacier terminus. Spatial variations of ice ablation therefore appear to be mainly driven by potential solar radiation, while temporal variations are driven by temperature. This result suggests that minimizing the influence of temperature in an enhanced temperature-index melt model may compromise the model’s ability to simulate interannual changes in melt. These new results may help to improve the calibration, and thus the performance, of these empirical melt models used for long-term simulations of glacier mass balances.

The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) experiment at the South Pole is designed to detect high-energy neutrinos which, via in-ice interactions, produce coherent radiation at frequencies up to 1000 MHz. Characterization of ice birefringence, and its effect upon wave polarization, is proposed to enable range estimation to a neutrino interaction and hence aid in neutrino energy reconstruction. Using radio transmitter calibration sources, the ARA collaboration recently measured polarization-dependent time delay variations and reported significant time delays for trajectories perpendicular to ice flow, but not parallel. To explain these observations, and assess the capability for range estimation, we use fabric data from the SPICE ice core to model ice birefringence and construct a bounding radio propagation model that predicts polarization time delays. We compare the model with new data from December 2018 and demonstrate that the measurements are consistent with the prevailing horizontal crystallographic axis aligned near-perpendicular to ice flow. The study supports the notion that range estimation can be performed for near flow-perpendicular trajectories, although tighter constraints on fabric orientation are desirable for improving the accuracy of estimates.

To assess future global change, monitoring of the climate system through observation and analysis of seasonal and interannual fluctuations of climate variables is necessary. Cryospheric elements such as snow cover are often seen as sensitive indicators and integrators of basic climate conditions and hence an indicator of regional and global change. Snow-cover elements which may serve as signals of variability and change are discussed with respect to the effective use of conventional and remotely sensed information. Conventional data are shown to be effective for assessing questions of temporal variability, but are limited for spatial variability. Passive microwave satellite data make an important contribution by providing spatial and temporal information on snow water equivalent (SWE) and the regional distribution of snowpack extent and state. Use of NIMBUS-7 SMMR (Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer) data to develop a time series of SWE is assessed as a complement to conventional data. Limitations of SMMR coverage compared to DMSP SSM/I (Special Sensor Microwave/Imager) coverage for production of SWE maps for climate change analysis are discussed. Although there are limitations during early season snow cover, information derived from passive microwave data is shown to be able to map and compute the areal coverage of SWE allowing interannual comparison of the amount of water available, the date of peak accumulation and the associated spatial distribution. However, the satellite data record is still too short to establish any definitive trend in snow-cover variability.

An analysis of the relationship between iceberg calving rates and water depth has been completed for 22 tidewater glaciers. A linear relationship provides reasonable accuracy, with a correlation coefficient of 0.85, for all tidewater glaciers examined, whether they be polar or temperate. The polar glaciers have a slightly lower calving rate for a given water depth. This relationship indicates a lower calving rate for water depths over 50 m than determined by Brown and others (1982). It is based only on glaciers or ice streams and cannot be applied to ice shelves.

Due to frequent and intense storm systems moving across the Antarctic sea ice, ice drift and deformation fluctuate substantially. Observations of drilling buoys show inertial power to be a substantial component of ice drift and deformation. Because the inertial period at high latitudes is close to tidal periods, this peak can be amplified due to resonance. in practice, the energy dissipation by ice interaction plays a significant role in dampening out this inertial energy. in present sea-ice dynamics models both with and without ice interaction, this inertial motion is overdamped due to the underestimation of coupling to the ocean boundary layer. To develop a more consistent treatment of ice drift under fluctuating wind fields, we consider here a vertically integrated formulation of the ice-ocean boundary-layer system that incorporates a more realistic treatment of the upper ocean. Under steady wind conditions this model reduces to the normal water-drag formulation used in most sea-ice dynamics models. Simulations using this “imbedded” model are analyzed to elucidate the role of ice interaction in the Antarctic ice-pack in modifying the high-frequency motion and inducing deformation which in turn significantly impact ice-thickness characteristics. The simulations demonstrate that in an interacting ice field in the presence of kinematic waves inertial imbedding can lead to oscillations in ice concentration of up to ~10% open water. These variations are similar in magnitude to observed deformation fluctuations in tide-free regions.

Glacier naledi are extrusive ice masses that appear in front of glaciers as a consequence of refreezing of meltwater seepage during the accumulation season. These structures provide a unique opportunity to understand subglacial drainage activity during the accumulation season; however, only few detailed studies have previously focused on their characteristics. Here, we investigated glacier-derived naled assemblages in the proglacial zone of the polythermal glacier Werenskioldbreen (27.4 km2) in SW Svalbard. We determined the spatial distribution of naledi using ground penetrating radar surveys. The main subglacial drainage pattern was related to a channel under the medial moraine, and three sources are linked to a distributed subglacial drainage network. The relation between atmospherically-corrected (Ca2+ + Mg2+) and (SO4 2−) in sub-naled waters was closely related to sulphide oxidation coupled with carbonate dissolution (r = 0.99; slope = 1.6). This is consistent with the local lithology, which is dominated by schist containing carbonates. We also found high carbonate saturation indices in pale white ice layers within the naled. We conclude that sulphide oxidation coupled with carbonate dissolution is the dominant chemical weathering process in the subglacial drainage system of Werenskioldbreen during the accumulation season.

Since 1977, large areas on western Vatnajökull have been surveyed by ground-based, radio echo-sounding and the whole ice cap, HofsjökuIl, was surveyed in 1983. Detailed maps of the glacier-surface elevation and the sub-ice bedrock have been compiled. The instrumentation includes a 2–5 MHz, mono-pulse echo-sounder, for continuous profiling, a satellite geoceiver and Loran-C equipment, for navigation, and a precision pressure altimeter. The maps of western Vatnajökull cover about 1500 km2 and are compiled from 1500 km-long sounding lines, which yielded about 50 000 data points for ice thickness and 20 000 points for ice-surface elevation. The maps of HofsjökuIl cover 923 km2, the sounding lines were 1350 km long; 42 000 points were used for determining ice thickness and 30 000 for surface elevation. The maps obtained from these data are the first ones of the ice caps with surface elevation of known accuracy. The bedrock map of western Vatnajökull shows details of volcanic ridges and subglacial valleys, running north-east to south-west, as well as the central, volcanic complexes, Hamarinn, Bárdarbunga, and Grimsvtön and the related fissure swarms. The map of Hofsjökull reveals a large volcanic complex, with a 650 m deep caldera. The landforms in southern Hofsjökull are predominantly aligned from north to south, but those in the northern ice cap run north by 25° east.

The NEEM deep ice-core drilling in northwest Greenland was completed in summer 2010 after three seasons, which included establishing all drilling infrastructure. Normal drilling operations in the main borehole were declared terminated at 2537.36 m below the surface, when further penetration was stopped by a stone embedded in the ice in the path of the drill head. The design and implementation of the drilling operation strongly resembled the NGRIP drilling program. The NEEM drill was an extended version of the Hans Tausen (HT) drill, with specific modifications to optimize its use with the highly viscous Estisol-240/Coasol drill fluid used at NEEM. Modification to the drill and its performance in the new drilling fluid was largely satisfactory and successful. Throughout the drilling, special consideration was given to the way chips were transported and collected in a new chip chamber, including the consequences of drilling a larger borehole diameter than with previous drill operations that used the HT family of drills. The problems normally associated with warm ice drilling near the base of an ice sheet were largely absent at NEEM.

Cryoconite holes play a significant role in the nutrient cycling on glaciers and can be regarded as a storehouse of nutrients that are generated through microbial and photochemical activities. In this work, the chemical characteristics of hydrologically connected and isolated cryoconite holes from three geographically distinct regions of coastal Antarctica, namely Larsemann Hills, Amery Ice Shelf and central Dronning Maud Land were studied. Major ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, SO42− and NO3−) and total organic carbon in the hydrologically isolated, closed cryoconite holes showed significantly higher enrichment (6–26 times and 9 times, respectively) over the conservative tracer ion Cl− possibly due to sediment dissolution and microbial synthesis during isolation period. In contrast, depletion of major ions and organic carbon were observed in the open, hydrologically connected holes due to their discharge from the cryoconite holes through interconnected streams. This study suggests that the contribution of cryoconite holes to the nutrient and microbial transport to downstream environments may vary with the extent of hydrological connectivity by virtue of the fact that nutrients and organic carbon which accumulate in the isolated cryoconite holes during isolation could get washed to downstream environments in the event that they get connected through surface or subsurface melt channels.

Basal pressure has been recorded at the Svartisen Subglacial Laboratory, northern Norway, for 20 years, and is measured by load cells installed at the ice–rock interface under ~200m of glacier ice. Synchronous pressure variations between load cells are investigated as evidence of stress redistribution and hydrological bed connectivity. A running Pearson correlation is used to study the temporal variation in the response of several sensors. By studying the nature of this correlation as well as the correlation between sensor pairs, it is possible to investigate the evolution of the degree of synchronous response, and to some extent basal connectivity, at the glacier bed. Persistent seasonal variations associated with the melt season are observed throughout the measurement period, indicating dependence on surface hydrological forcing. Overlying this pattern, specific years with longer periods of positive and negative correlation of pressure between sensors are presented to show contrasting interannual variability in basal pressure. An anticorrelated connectivity is associated with a local increase in the rate of daily subglacial discharge, and is caused by load transfer or passive cavity opening. Stable weather appears to enhance connectivity of the sensors, which is attributed to the development of a persistent drainage system and stress redistribution.

The WISSARD (Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling) traversable hot-water drill system was designed to create various-diameter ice boreholes to a depth of >800 m, with most major components being controllable from a single user interface. The drill control system operates four low-pressure pumps for water generation and circulation, two hot-water generation units containing a total of six diesel burner modules with integrated high-pressure pumps, three winches (one with independent level-wind motor), a four-motor linear traction drive, and a large number of analog and digital sensors to monitor system performance and cleanliness. Due to development time constraints the control system design focused on utilizing commercial off-the-shelf components, while being highly modular, easily expandable and rapidly deployable. Additional emphasis was placed on providing redundant manual operator controls and maintaining a low degree of system automation to avoid dependence on software control loops for first-season deployment. The result of this design paradigm was a control system that was taken from concept to full operation in <6 months, successfully performing in the field without insurmountable problems.

Since the Little Ice Age, most glaciers in the Tien Shan mountains have been retreating. Owing to an increase in precipitation in most parts of the mountains during the late 1950s to early 1970s, the percentage of receding glaciers and the speed of retreat have tended to decrease in the 1970s. However, the general trend of continuous glacier retreat remains unchanged, in part because the summer air temperature shows no tendency to decrease.

In the Tien Shan mountains, as the degree of climatic continentality increases the mass balance becomes more dependent on summer temperature, and accumulation and ablation tend to be lower. Therefore, the responses of glaciers to climatic fluctuations in more continental areas are not synchronous with those in less continental areas, and the amplitude of the glacier variations becomes smaller.

The rapid retreat and disintegration of the Larsen Ice Shelf sector extending north of Seal Nunataks (65° S), documented from the mid 1970s onwards by remote sensing, is presented and related to the Antarctic Peninsula climatic warming recorded over several past decades. A 1975 KOSMOS satellite photograph and a series of LANDSAT MSS and TM images taken in 1978, 1979, 1986, 1988 and 1989 were used to monitor the retreat of the ice shelf between Seal Nunataks and Prince Gustav Channel. The ice shelf has decreased by more than 30% during the period 1975–89 within the Christensen Island to Cape Longing region. Measurements of the ice front position carried out in the field during late 1991 indicate that the recession between Lindenberg Island and Sobral Peninsula is still continuing, in some places at a rate of up to 2.5 km a−1.

Piston cores collected from the Ross Sea continental shelf, Antarctica, were studied as part of a multi-scale analysis of glacial and glaciomarine stratigraphy and sedimentology. The objective of these analyses was to differentiate glaciomarine sediments from subglacially deformed tills. Results from analyses of microstructures, lithofacies and seafloor morphology indicate that glaciomarine and subglacially deformed sediments can be clearly distinguished and further characterized by variations in textural parameters. Overcompaction, as well as presence of stratification in sediments, are not considered critical criteria for distinguishing subglacial from glaciomarine deposits. Trough-shaped morphologies and fluted terrain strongly correlate with S-C and S-C-C- type shear-zone microstructures and indicate that subglacial deformation is an important process in these areas, confirming the presence of grounded ice on the shelf during formation of these landforms and deposits. Flat, smooth topographies, as well as (low-angle) slope environments, correspond to microfabrics which lack microscopic shear-zone geometries and contain dropstones, angular-sediment clasts, large-shell fragments and slight sorting in sandy layers, which imply ice-shelf or open-water conditions present during deposition.
