Ice-dammed Hidden Creek Lake, Alaska, USA, outbursts annually in about 2–3 days. As the lake fills, a wedge of water penetrates beneath the glacier, and the surface of this ‘ice dam’ rises; the surface then falls as the lake drains. Detailed optical surveying of the glacier near the lake allows characterization of ice-dam deformation. Surface uplift rate is close to the rate of lake-level rise within about 400 m of the lake, then decreases by 90% over about 100 m. Such a steep gradient in uplift rate cannot be explained in terms of ice-dam flexure. Moreover, survey targets spanning the zone of steep uplift gradient move relative to one another in a nearly reversible fashion as the lake fills and drains. Evidently, the zone of steep uplift gradient is a fault zone, with the faults penetrating the entire thickness of the ice dam. Fault motion is in a reverse sense as the lake fills, but in a normal sense as the lake drains. As the overall fault pattern is the same from year to year, even though ice is lost by calving, the faults must be regularly regenerated, probably by linkage of surface and bottom crevasses as ice is advected toward the lake basin.

A finite-element model is developed in order to calculate the coupled ice and heat flow and the surface topography in cold, steady-state ice sheets. The model decouples the heat-flow equation and the surface mass-balance condition from the rest of the equations and solves the problem by an iterative method. The model is used to examine the thermomechanics of ice divides. Initial studies of a symmetric, plane ice divide and an axisymmetric ice divide have led to the following conclusions, which are consistent with previous results. The ice-divide zone is a narrow region, only a few ice thicknesses wide, where the surface slope drops to zero and the flow solution changes. The longitudinal strain rate is high, especially in the upper layers, and the vertical velocity is smaller than away from the divide. This causes the basal temperatures to increase and the isochrones to rise. Divergent-flow conditions widen the ice-divide zone, whereas they do not influence the solution at the ice divide.

We estimate temperature sensitivity of observed mass balance for glaciers in the European Alps to compare with our earlier estimates from modelling. We treat 1961-90 as our reference period and compare mass balance for 1991-2010 with this reference period. There are eight Alpine glaciers with long enough records. The mean mass balance for the eight glaciers is close to zero for the reference period, very negative for 1991-2010 and highly negative in the exceptionally warm year 2003. Mass-balance changes are compared with 1991-2010 temperature anomalies to give an average temperature sensitivity of approximately -0.7 ± 0.2 m w.e. a-1 K-1 for the eight glaciers. There is considerable variation between individual glaciers, with higher sensitivity for western glaciers and lower sensitivity for eastern glaciers. Temperature sensitivity for the eight glaciers is strongly correlated with the standard deviation of observed mass balance, which from earlier work is known to be correlated with winter balance. The mean temperature sensitivity for observed mass balance is in reasonable agreement with values from earlier models, but changes in glacier hypsometry during 1991-2010 may have further increased observed mass loss.

The grounded ice in the Totten and Dalton glaciers is an essential component of the buttressing for the marine-based Aurora basin, and hence their stability is important to the future rate of mass loss from East Antarctica. Totten and Vanderford glaciers are joined by a deep east-west running subglacial trench between the continental ice sheet and Law Dome, while a shallower trench links the Totten and Dalton glaciers. All three glaciers flow into the ocean close to the Antarctic circle and experience ocean-driven ice shelf melt rates comparable with the Amundsen Sea Embayment. We investigate this combination of trenches and ice shelves with the BISICLES adaptive mesh ice-sheet model and ocean-forcing melt rates derived from two global climate models. We find that ice shelf ablation at a rate comparable with the present day is sufficient to cause widespread grounding line retreat in an east-west direction across Totten and Dalton glaciers, with projected future warming causing faster retreat. Meanwhile, southward retreat is limited by the shallower ocean facing slopes between the coast and the bulk of the Aurora sub-glacial trench. However the two climate models produce completely different future ice shelf basal melt rates in this region: HadCM3 drives increasing sub-ice shelf melting to ~2150, while ECHAM5 shows little or no increase in sub-ice shelf melting under the two greenhouse gas forcing scenarios.

Acid fallout from volcanic eruptions is well documented in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets (Hammer and others, 1980; Hammer, 1984; Legrand and Delmas, 1987). However, to date, no volcanic ash (tephra) layers have been positively identified in association with any of the high electrical conductivity layers that mark the volcanic acid deposition. In this paper we report the results of a study of the chemical composition of insoluble microparticles filtered from five intervals of a core from the South Pole. These five intervals were identified by Kirchner (1988) as being due to volcanic fallout, on the basis of electrical conductivity and sulfuric acid measurements.

The major element composition of tiny (<5 µm) glass shards found in these layers was determined and compared with analyses of volcanic ash from known eruptions or from volcanic sources suspected of having produced the fallout. Glass shards from volcanic eruptions of both local (Antarctic and sub-Antarctic) and of global (Indonesian/South American) importance have been identified in this study.

We have discovered a band of stones and coarse sand in the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, some 60 m above the ice shelf’s base, 40 km from its seaward edge and 420 km from the point where the ice originally went afloat. A study of ice-sounding radar data from across the Ronne Ice Shelf has revealed other areas likely to contain debris in significant quantities. It appears that basal debris at the margins of ice streams feeding the ice shelf can be buried in the ice shelf by sea water freezing-on at the ice-shelf base. These findings are evidence for a mechanism active in a present-day ice-sheet/shelf system, which enables icebergs to transport large volumes of ice-rafted debris, and which also provides a potential mechanism for the formation of ice rises near ice fronts. We anticipate that a seismics study of debris melted from the ice shelf and deposited beneath will provide a valuable control on the history of ice-shelf–ocean interactions.

Snow-cover characteristics on ice floes in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, were examined during cruises in autumn 1998 and summer 1999. The autumn snow cover was shallower, colder and had higher and more variable salinity, and smaller single and composite grain-sizes than the summer snow cover. The autumn snow cover was dominated by rounded particles in chains of grains and clusters, while the summer snow cover was composed primarily of melt clusters. There was extensive flooding of the summer snow cover at the snow/ice interface. The summer snow cover was nearly isothermal and close to the melting point. It exhibited obvious signs of melting and refreezing in the form of ice lenses, pipes and superimposed ice, although no melt ponds were evident. Many of the ice lenses were located directly above the saline standing water found on most of the summer ice floes.

A study on effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of natural ice in a reservoir with <3% gas content and ∼300 mg L−1 dissolved matter content in the parent water was conducted in a laboratory. Ice sections were prepared to obtain the ice crystal structure, gas bubble content and ice density. Profiles of horizontal and vertical thermal conductivity of ice samples were determined with attention to relatively high temperature spanning 0 to –10°C. A detailed comparative analysis was conducted of the effects on ETC of direction, ice crystal structure, gas bubbles and temperature. Gas inclusions had little impact on the thermal conductivity of natural reservoir ice due to their quite low content (<3%). At high ice temperature the ETC decreases remarkably as ice temperature approaches the melting point, as the ETC of sea ice does due to its brine volume at ice temperature approaching its melting point. The measured conductivities for temperatures higher than –4°C were less than expected from previous work on saline ice. Whether this was due to the measurement techniques or actual properties of the reservoir ice is not clear. The present findings could lead to better understanding of the thermal processes of ice in natural freshwater bodies.

The continental regions of China are extensively covered by snow during winter. In this paper, the seasonal snow cover in the Tien Shan and Altay mountains is observed and analyzed, based on the characteristics of the dry-cold snow cover accumulating under the continental climatic conditions in northwest China. Compared with the humid-warm snow cover, the dry-cold snow cover is characterized mainly by small density, low water content, large temperature gradient, thick depth hoar, etc., and its metamorphism is dominated by the thermal exchange and the pressure of the overlying snow layers. According to the observed data, the solar radiation flux on the snow surface is dominated by a negative balance in the arid areas in China during the snow season; the albedo on the new-fallen-snow surface is up to 96%, and the transmission depth of shortwave radiation in dry-cold snow cover is 28 cm. During the snowmelt season in spring, the thickness of the depth hoar can occupy 80% of the whole snow cover.

The tendency of icebergs to roll or heel over is well-known, and so the potential hazards and difficulties of towing unstable icebergs may be appreciated. It follows that there is a need for both accurate and approximate techniques for determining the stability of an iceberg.

Aerial photographs have been obtained of Ice Stream B, one of the active ice streams draining the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. A sketch map made from these photographs shows two tributaries. The margin of the active ice is marked by curved crevasses and intense crevassing occurs just inward of them. Transverse crevasses dominate the center of the ice streams and diagonal types appear at the lower end. A “suture zone” originates at the tributary convergence and longitudinal surface ridges occur at the downglacier end. The causes of these surface features are discussed and the relative importance of four stresses in resisting the driving stress is assessed. We conclude that basal drag may be important, longitudinal compression is probably important at the lower end, and longitudinal tension is probably most important near the head of the ice stream. Side drag leads to shearing at the margins, but does not restrain much of the ice stream.

A numerical simulation of the flow of the cold glacier of Dôme du Goûter (4304 m, Mont Blanc, France) is presented. Owing to the large thickness of the firn layer, the simulation was done by using a rheological model for porous ice derived from a model for ceramic sintering and adapted to fit available data on in situ measured density profiles and firn mechanical behaviour. The flow calculation was made under the assumptions of axisymmetric geometry and stationary conditions, by solving a coupled problem. For a given density field, the velocities were obtained by the finite-element method. Then the integration of the mass-conservation equation along the streamlines derived from this velocity field gave the corresponding stationary densities. The results of the numerical simulation, besides the velocity and density fields, are the age of the ice along the streamlines. They are compared with observation and field data.

Continuous avalanche flow speed measurements from start to stop of dense flow avalanches, and localized flow depth and slope perpendicular flow speed profiles, have been measured using X-band radar equipment- Maximum flow speeds of up io 65 m/s have been measured in large avalanches. Comparison of measured flow speeds with Voellmy-type model calculations shows that traditionally chosen sets of parameters, evaluated from runout measurements, cannot model the measured high speeds in the track.

To get an improved quantitative understanding of flowing avalanches, it is proposed that from the start to the stop different flow regimes with different mechanical characteristics are passed through. This is based on theoretical studies of the movement of granular materials, where in adddition to the flow velocity a mean random fluctuation velocity of grains is introduced. A partly or fully fluidized state may be taken according to whether the ratio of frictional to collisional energy loss is smaller or larger than unity. In a third regime the snow is non-fluidized, ie pure gliding of the rigid snow. A good agreement of measurements with the proposed mechanisms is shown.

The motion field of the northern Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula, was analyzed, based on Landsat data from 1986 to 1989, Earth Resources Satellite (ERS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from 1992 to 1997, and comparative field measurements along three transects. During this period the northern sections of the ice shelf showed steady retreat, which culminated in the disintegration of the two ice-shelf sections north of Seal Nunataks in January 1995. Velocities of these two sections were derived by cross-correlation, using SAR images of 1 year time intervals and Landsat images of 1-3 year intervals. A slight increase of velocity was observed as crevasses and rifts opened before the final disintegration. In addition, an interferometric motion analysis was carried out for the ice shelf around and south of Seal Nunataks, based on an image pair from the ERS-1/2 Tandem Mission in 1995. This analysis reveals a complex pattern of tidal flexure in the grounding zones, as well as rifting and shear zones on the ice shelf. In addition, the motion of the main input glaciers was derived.

Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) ship-based ice observations, conducted during the Sea Ice Mass Balance in the Antarctic (SIMBA) and Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystem eXperiment (SIPEX) International Polar Year (IPY) cruises (September–October 2007), are used to validate remote-sensing measurements of ice extent and concentration. Observations include varied sea-ice types at and inside the ice edge of West (~90˚ W) and East (~120˚ E) Antarctica. Time series of Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer–Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) ice extents and US National Ice Center (NIC) ice edges were obtained for the 2007–08 periods bracketing the period these cruises were conducted. A comparison between passive microwave satellite imagery and ASPeCt observations of sea-ice concentration during two cruises was also performed. In 90˚W regions, the concentrated pack ice indicated good correlation between ship observations and passive microwave estimates of the ice concentration (R2 = 0.80). In the marginal zone of West Antarctica and over nearly the entire sea-ice zone of East Antarctica, correlation dropped to R2 < 0.60. These findings are consistent with other studies comparing passive microwave and ship observations and further verify that the East Antarctic sea-ice zone is more marginal in character. There are significant ice-edge differences between AMSR-E and NIC between late November 2007 and early March 2008 such that the AMSR-E sea-ice extent estimate is 1–2 × 106 km2 less than the NIC estimate.

Sea ice constitutes a major element in the atmospheric, oceanographic and biological regime of the polar regions. Assessment of its fundamental properties requires interdisciplinary investigations on local, regional and global scales. Sea-ice structure and textural parameters of individual ice cores play a key role in such investigations. A proper characterization of sea-ice micro-structure is essential for an adequate classification of ice cores, an understanding of the growth processes of the sampled floe, and the identification of possible relationships between ice texture, and the physical, chemical and biological properties of sea ice. Investigations on ice cores which were obtained during three recent Antarctic expeditions (1983–85) in coastal waters of the eastern and southern Weddell Sea are reported. The basis for a number of physical, chemical and biological investigations is an assessment of the textural characteristics of each sea-ice core. These are derived by inspection of continuous thick sections, supplemented by an analysis of selected vertical and horizontal thin sections. Major results of this study can be summarized as follows: (i) in addition to the common ice classes, another sea-ice type, platelet ice, is identified; it is apparently unique to the coastal waters of Antarctica, near the ice-shelf edge, and (ii) different physical, chemical and biological sea-ice properties vary systematically with and are probably related to / controlled by the ice texture of the cores.

Internal layers in polar ice sheets have been mapped in many areas using information from radio-echo sounding surveys. The layers contain imprints of past accumulation patterns and ice flow and can potentially provide estimates of past accumulation rates. In this study, average accumulation rates for the past 14.7 ka in north and central Greenland are recovered from the mapped depth of one pronounced isochrone using a simple ice flow model, accounting for both vertical and horizontal flow combined with formal inversion techniques. Using this method, upstream variations in the accumulation and flow are taken into account when inferring the accumulation rates from the deep layer. This resulted in larger spatial variations in the inferred accumulation rates compared to approaches using a one-dimensional ice flow model. The largest differences were found in areas of significant horizontal flow. The inferred accumulation rates agree with Holocene estimates from ice cores in the interior of the ice sheet. Across the central ice divide, the inferred accumulation pattern shows a pronounced gradient in accumulation rates, similar to the present-day pattern, suggesting that the large-scale pattern in the interior of central northern Greenland has been consistent throughout the past 14.7 ka.

This paper documents the drilling of the 5G deep hole at the Russian Vostok station, Antarctica. The hole construction is described and the specifications of the drill and surface drilling equipment are given. The peculiarities of drilling at various depths are considered. Based on the extensive experimental data collected at Vostok station, the processes occurring at the hole bottom are investigated: ice breaking and cutting, bottom cleaning and chip transport, and accumulation of the chips in the screen. The main factors affecting ice-drilling efficiency are the coarseness of ice crystals and the ice temperature. When ice crystal size exceeds 10 mm the cutting efficiency sharply decreases, and when ice temperature exceeds –5°C the chip transport from the hole bottom and the chip density in the screen are reduced. The drill advance then becomes irregular, slows down and may even be terminated in some cases. Optimal values of the basic drilling parameters (e.g. cutter head rotation rate and drilling fluid flow rate in the circulation system) have been deduced empirically. The designs of the cutter head and circulation system including screens have been significantly modified, allowing the drilling process to proceed at a normal rate even in the vicinity of the subglacial lake surface.

GPS campaigns on glaciers during jökulhlaups show how subglacial floods affect glacier motion and shed light on the dynamics of such floods. Three such campaigns have been carried out on southern and western Vatnajökull, southeast Iceland, over known jökulhlaup paths. Two slowly rising jökulhlaups from Grímsvötn and two rapidly rising jökulhlaups from the western and eastern Skaftá cauldrons were captured in these campaigns, with maximum discharge ranging from 240 to 3300 m3 s−1. Glacier surface movements measured in these campaigns are presented along with the corresponding discharge curves. The measurements are interpreted as indicating: (1) initiation of rapidly rising jökulhlaups with a propagating subglacial pressure wave, (2) decreased glacier basal friction during jökulhlaups, (3) subglacial accumulation of water in slowly rising jökulhlaups and (4) lifting of the glacier caused by subglacial water pressure exceeding overburden in both rapidly and slowly rising jökulhlaups. The latter two observations are inconsistent with assumptions that are typically made in theoretical and numerical modelling of jökulhlaups. Both viscous and elastic deformation of the glacier as well as turbulent hydraulic fracture at the ice/bedrock interface are important in the dynamics of the subglacial pressure wave at the front of rapidly rising jökulhlaups.

Bakaninbreen is a 17 km long surge-type glacier in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, which began surging between the springs of 1985 and 1986, forming a surge front where fast-moving surge ice meets non-surging ice. This surge front has propagated 6 km down-glacier over the period to 1995. Instruments known as “ploughmeters” were installed into the deformable sedimentary bed close to the surge front to assess mechanical conditions year-round. Forces experienced by ploughmeters located down-glacier of the surge front are generally lower than those recorded by a ploughmeter up-glacier of the surge front. Ploughmeters installed at the bed down-glacier of the surge front show initially low applied forces, followed by increasing applied forces. We interpret this increase in applied forcing as a late-active-phase motion event. Analysis of ploughmeter data allows calculation of the yield strength of basal sediments. Yield-strength estimates at Bakaninbreen are in the range 16.6–87.5 kPa. Comparison with estimates of basal shear stress suggests that sediments up-glacier of the surge front will be actively deforming, whereas there will be only limited deformation down-glacier of the surge front. Immediately down-glacier of the surge front, calculations indicate negligible basal shear stresses. Together with the deformation of sediment from up-glacier, this implies a build-up of sediment at the surge front, offering a potential explanation for the sediment-filled thrust faults outcropping on the surge front.
