The Ronne polynya formed in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, during the period November 1997−February 1998 to an extent not seen previously in the 25 years of all-weather satellite observations. The vessel HMS Endurance traversed the polynya region and took sea-ice, physical oceanographic and meteorological measurements during January and early February 1998. These observations, together with satellite imagery and weather records, were analyzed to determine the causes of the anomalous condition observed and to provide comparisons for numerical modeling experiments. The polynya area, analyzed from satellite imagery, showed a linear, nearly constant, increase with time from mid-November 1997 through February 1998. It had a maximum open-water area of 3 × 105 km2 and extended 500 km north of the Ronne Ice Shelf (at 76° S) to 70° S. The ice and snow structure of floes at the northern edge of the polynya showed the ice there had formed in the previous mid- to late winter (October 1997 or earlier) and had been advected there either from the eastern Weddell Sea or from the front of the Ronne Ice Shelf. Analyses of the wind fields showed anomalous spring-summer wind fields in the polynya year, with a strong southerly to southwesterly component compared to the mean easterly winds typical of summer conditions. These southerly wind conditions, in both magnitude and direction, therefore account for the drift of ice northward. The predominant summer easterly winds usually fill the southern Weddell Sea with ice from the east, and the high-albedo surfaces reflect the solar radiation, preventing warming of the surface ocean waters and consequent sea-ice melt. Instead, high incident solar radiation from November 1997 to February 1998 was absorbed by the open water, rather than being reflected, thereby both melting ice and preventing ice formation, and thereby sustaining the polynya. We conclude that open-water-albedo feedback is necessary to allow the observed polynya formation, since similar drift conditions prevail in winter (arising from southerly winds also) and usually result in extensive new ice formation in front of the Ronne Ice Shelf. The strong southerly winds therefore have quite opposing seasonal effects, leading to high ice production in winter as usually found, and extensive open water if they occur in spring and summer, as seen in this atypical event in 1997/98. In this case, the atypical southerly winds may be associated with an El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-induced atmospheric circulation pattern.

Like many mountain ranges, the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, have undergone both local and ice-sheet glaciation. Effects of ice sheets are concentrated along major valleys and on adjacent spurs and passes which carried strong flows of diffluent ice. The major valleys are broad glacial troughs with frequent rock basins. Their slopes are broken into rounded, steep-sided bosses whalebacks abraded on all sides: they are of the order of 100 m to 1 km long, and 10 m high. In the southern Coast Mountains, the distribution of these whalebacks is consistent with a proposed pattern of former ice streams 1.0–2.1 km thick, within the Cordilleran ice sheet. They are best developed where geological structures parallel the valley and thus the former ice-flow direction, but they are found on a range of lithologies and some are transverse to structure. The whalebacks provide an impression of glacial streamlining, and occasionally grade into rock drumlins. Roches moutonnées are rare in the major troughs.

It is hypothesised that these whalebacks and rock drumlins develop under ice streams of Greenland or East Antarctic type, sliding rapidly over bedrock and exploiting rock weaknesses to produce streamlined features. Lee slopes are abraded when thick ice suppresses bed separation, even with rapid flow; basal ice of low viscosity would aid this suppression. Water pressures under the ice streams may have remained high, so that lee-side plucking was rare; such plucking is most likely where pressure fluctuates dramatically, and especially when lee cavities under active ice reach atmospheric pressure.

Two-or three-dimensional avalanche-simulation models offer a wide range of applications; however, a challenging model-verification process is demanded, accompanied by a reliable determination of model-input parameters. We show that a verification process can be arranged with remote-monitoring data from an artificially triggered avalanche, leading to the calculation of avalanche mass balance. Two numerical methods are applied to increase the quality of the parameter fit and to reduce the number of simulations. The quality of the parameter fit is verified by comparing measured and simulated run-out lengths. In addition, a cross-check is performed using velocities derived from Doppler radar measurements.

Key issues of glacier monitoring are changes in glacier geometry and glacier mass. As accurate direct measurements are costly and time-consuming, the use of various remote-sensing data for glacier monitoring is explored. One technology used and described here is airborne laser scanning. The method enables the derivation of high-quality digital elevation models (DEMs) with a vertical and horizontal accuracy in the sub-metre range. Between September 2001 and August 2002, three laser scanner data acquisition flights were carried out, covering the whole area of Engabreen, Norway, and corresponding well to the measurement dates for the mass-balance year 2001/02. The data quality of the DEMs is assessed (e.g. by comparing the values with a control area which has been surveyed independently or GPS ground profiles measured during the flights). For the whole glacier, surface elevation change and consequently volume change is calculated, quantified and compared with traditional mass-balance data for the same time interval. For the winter term, emergence/submergence velocity is determined from laser scanner data and snow-depth data and is compared with velocity measurements at stakes. The investigations reveal the high potential of airborne laser scanning for measuring the extent and the topography of glaciers as well as changes in geometry (Δarea, Δvolume).

Simulations of glacier evolution are needed to assess future changes in the runoff regime of mountain catchments. A simplified parameterized model is applied here to simulate future thickness changes and glacier retreat of Mer de Glace, French Alps. A normalized thickness change function describing the spatial distribution of surface-elevation changes as a function of elevation has been determined. The model reveals that under present climatic conditions Mer de Glace will continue to shrink dramatically in the coming decades, retreating by 1200 m between now and 2040. The method has certain limitations related to the uncertainties of the normalized function based on thickness change data. An error of 10% in the normalized function leads to uncertainties of 46%, 30% and 18% in Mer de Glace front, surface area and glacier-wide mass-balance changes respectively in 2040. Because the difference of the normalized function largely exceeds 10% from one glacier to another, even within a given glacier size class and elevation range, it would be very risky to extrapolate the normalized function to unmeasured glaciers. Consequently, the method is applicable only on glaciers where past surface elevation changes are well constrained.

The distribution of surface mass balance on Amundsenisen, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, is investigated along a continous profile line. Ice-penetrating radar is used to map variations in ice-layer thickness within the upper 100 m of the ice sheet. The route passes several firn- and ice-core drilling sites over a distance of 320 km. Dielectric-profiling data of ice cores are used to calculate the depths of selected reflection horizons and the cumulative mass of the ice column. The local surface mass balance is determined as a temporal average, covering a time-span of almost two centuries. The findings indicate a complex accumulation pattern superimposed on a generally low surface mass balance, which is related to small-scale surface undulations. The results of the radar soundings are in general in good agreement with surface mass-balance data derived from firn-core studies. Discrepancies between these two datasets can be explained by spatial mismatch or by minor quality of either ice-core profiles or radar data. For regional comparison of radar-based accumulation data we use an accumulation distribution interpolated from point measurements. The surface mass balance varies up to 50% over short distances, with correlation lengths of <10 km. We conclude that the current utilization schemes of point sampling are only capable of reproducing local values and regional trends but provide no information on the small-scale variability of surface mass balance.

Observations of Ürümqi glacier No. 1 at the headwaters of the Ürümqi river, Tien Shan, show remarkable changes between 1959 and 2003. The cumulative mass balance of the glacier is –10 032 mm, equivalent to 11.1 m of glacier ice, or 20% of the glacier volume, showing particular sensitivity to temperature change. The speed of glacier flow has gradually declined, especially since the 1980s. From 1980 to 2003, the flow speed of the east and west branches of the glacier decreased by about 21% and 43%, respectively. The glacier continuously retreated from 1962 to 2003. Its length has decreased by about 180 m (7.5%) and its area has diminished by 0.23 km2 (11.8%). Analyses show that summer precipitation is negatively correlated with mass balance and positively associated with runoff. These relationships are reasonable, as higher precipitation leads to higher runoff and lower glacier melt. On the other hand, summer temperature is negatively correlated with mass balance and positively associated with runoff, as higher temperatures lead to higher glacier melt and thus higher runoff, with summer temperatures controlling mass-balance variation. Over the past 45 years the negative mass balance, caused by higher ablation than accumulation, is associated with precipitation increase and temperature warming over the study area.

This isolated snowpack shows wide spatial variability in composition, with 15 samples from a 700 m transect giving coefficients of variance of more than 50% for most of the major ions. Cations showed somewhat less variability than anions. Preferential elution, i.e. the more rapid loss of some ions from the pack than others, was more readily observed in the composition of meltwaters because of the high variability in snowpack composition. Preferential elution could be found in the snowpack where it was possible to resample a well-defined surface during a period of ablation. The elution sequence established from these surfaces was although the position of the hydrogen and ammonium ions may be affected by buffering. The sequence compares reasonably well with a generalized one assembled from earlier studies, where is usually eluted quickly and sodium and chloride rather slowly. The evolution of the snowpack composition towards solute depletion, but relative richness in chloride, is clearly represented in triangular diagrams.

It has been postulated that heavy summer snowfalls have a large impact on the mass balance of mid-latitude glaciers, because they simultaneously add mass to the glacier and reduce the amount of absorbed solar radiation. An automatic weather station (AWS) on the snout of Morteratschgletscher, Switzerland, registered a large summer snowfall event on 10–11 July 2000. Sonic rangers recorded about 20 cm of new snow on the snout and about 50 cm near the equilibrium line. We have used data from the AWS to study the impact on the melt process. The data show that in the ablation zone of the glacier the snow has melted and the effect on the albedo has disappeared after about 5 days. The suppression of the melt by the high albedo of the fresh snow is an important effect. For the ablation zone we find a feedback factor of about four, that is, the total effect of the snowfall event on the annual specific balance is about four times the amount of mass added during the event. We have also used a mass-balance model with 25 m spatial resolution to assess the impact of the snowfall on the net balance of the entire glacier. We find the strongest effects just below the equilibrium line. Averaged over the glacier, the amount of snow deposited was 224 mm w.e. The calculated effect on the total mass balance of the glacier is 354 mm w.e.

To investigate recent glacier changes in the Himalayan region, we carried out GPS and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements at Yala Glacier, a benchmark glacier in Nepal. Glacier surface elevation and ice thickness were surveyed along a 1.5 km profile from the glacier top to the terminus. Ice flow velocity was measured at five locations by surveying stakes for either 1 year or 4 day periods. Obtained surface elevation and ice velocity were compared with those measured in 1982 and 1996. The mean ice thickness along the radar profile was 36 m in 2009 and the ice has been thinning at rates of-0.69 ±0.25 and -0.75 ± 0.24 m a-1 during the periods 1982-96 and 1996-2009, respectively. The thinning rate increases down-glacier, reaching a magnitude up to -1.8 m a-1 near the terminus from 1996 to 2009. The ice velocity has reduced by >70% from 1982 to 2009 in the lower half of the glacier. By assuming a constant driving stress over the glacier, the total ice volume in 2009 was estimated as 0.061 km3. Our results indicate that Yala Glacier has lost ∼40% of its ice volume over the last 27 years and that the rate of the mass loss has accelerated over the last decade.

Summer 2000/01 ASTER and Landsat 7 scenes and semi-automated digitization were used to compile a glacier inventory for local glaciers of the Geikie Plateau region, central East Greenland. Of the 332 glaciers (41 591 km2), 120 are tidewater-terminating and drain 90% of the glacierized area. Differencing the 2000/01 tidewater margins from the 1980s GEUS map database ice polygons (113 glaciers) and from 2004/05 ASTER tidewater margins (78 glaciers) shows a cumulative tidewater terminus width decrease from 196 km to 183 km between the 1980s and 2000s, with a corresponding areal loss of ~31 km2 and an effective length change of –14.3 km. Between 2000/01 and 2004/05, areal loss was 26 km2. Average margin retreat rate increased two- to threefold, from 1.7–2.1km2 a–1 (1980s– 2000) to 3.9–5.7km2 a–1 (2000–05). Advances are negligible, apart from two surges, of which one was previously undetected. Coastal, ‘outer’ fjord-terminating, glaciers have two to three times larger areal and effective length retreat rates than ‘inner’ fjord-terminating glaciers. We investigate possible causes and hypothesize that, in addition to ocean temperature and sea ice, changes in sea fog may affect coastal-terminating more than inner fjord-terminating glaciers.

Data from six automatic weather stations deployed around the interior of the Lambert Glacier basin, Antarctica, at surface elevations of 1830-2741 m are used to compile a surface climatology of this part of interior Antarctica for the period 1994-96. The stations measure air pressure, near-surface wind speed and air temperature at several levels, wind direction and firn temperatures. The topography of the basin, which extends more than 800 km inland, controls the katabatic wind regime and strongly influences the surface climate of the region. Windiest sites are on the steep coastal slopes, and within the depression of the Lambert and Mellor Ice Streams where the flow is topographically channelled. Surface winds here show greater seasonal variation in speed but less variation in direction than elsewhere. The annual mean temperatures on the relatively steep slopes on the eastern side of the basin are 4-5°C warmer than at equivalent altitude on the western side. During winter, near-synchronous synoptic temperature and pressure increases occur throughout the basin to at least 1000 km from the coast. There is a consistent pattern of diurnal wind variation in the summer at all stations, with maximum wind speed at about 0900 LST (local solar time), and the most easterly direction at 1300 LST.

Deep radar soundings as part of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US-ITASE) traverses in West Antarctica have revealed a bright internal reflector that we have imaged throughout widespread locations across the ice sheet. The layer is seen in traverses emanating from Byrd Station in four directions and has been traced continuously for distances of 535km toward the Weddell Sea drainage, 500km toward South Pole, 150km toward the Executive Committee Range and 160km toward Kamb Ice Stream (former Ice Stream C). The approximate area encompassed by the layer identified in these studies is 250 000km2. If the layer identification can also be extended to Siple Dome where we have additional radar soundings (Jacobel and others, 2000), the approximate area covered would increase by 50%. In many locations echo strength from the layer rivals the bed echo in amplitude even though it generally lies at a depth greater than half the ice thickness. At Byrd Station, where the layer depth is 1260 m, an age of ~17.5 kyr BP has been assigned based on the Blunier and Brook (2001) chronology. Hammer and others (1997) note that the acidity at this depth is >20 times the amplitude of any other part of the core. The depiction of this strong and widespread dated isochrone provides a unique time marker for much of the ice in West Antarctica. We apply a layer-tracing technique to infer the depth–time scale at the inland West Antarctic ice sheet divide and use this in a simple model to estimate the average accumulation rate.

Massive tabular icebergs (∽1000km2 surface area, ∽1011 kg mass) arrived in the southwest Ross Sea in early 2001 where they remained relatively immobile for the next 4 years. During the period of their presence, extensive landfast sea ice (fast ice) waxed and waned along the Victoria Land coast, with maximum coverage exceeding typical coverage prior to the arrival of the icebergs by a factor of 5. The purposes of this study are to determine (1) whether the extensive ‘iceberg blockade’ extending from Ross Island to Drygalski Ice Tongue was indeed, as intuition suggests, responsible for the unusual fast-ice conditions, and (2) how storm frequency, intensity and seasonal timing may have mitigated the effects of the icebergs. Our simple analysis of glaciological and atmospheric conditions observed during 2001–05 suggests that iceberg movement alone is not sufficient to explain fast-ice variability; and, in fact, it is the detailed interplay between storms and iceberg location that determine this variability.

Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier is a >60 km long and 20 km wide floating outlet glacier located at 79°30’ N, 22° W, draining a large area of the northeast Greenland ice sheet. Climate, mass-balance and dynamics studies were carried out on the glacier in three field seasons in 1996, 1997 and 1998. As part of this work, tidal-movement observations were carried out by simultaneous differential global positioning system (GPS) measurements at several locations distributed on the glacier surface. The GPS observations were performed continuously over several tidal cycles. At the same time, tiltmeter measurements were carried out in the grounding zones along the glacier margins and upstream, where the glacier leaves the main ice sheet A tide gauge installed in the sea immediately in front of the glacier front recorded the tide in the open sea during the field seasons. The observations show that the main part of the glacier tongue responds as a freely floating plate to the phase and amplitude of the local tide in the sea. However, kilometre-wide flexure zones exist along the marginal and upstream grounding lines. Attempts to model the observed tidal deflection and tilt patterns in the flexure zone by elastic-beam theory are unsuccessful, in contrast to previous findings by other investigators. The strongest disagreement between our measurements and results derived from elastic-beam theory is a significant variation of the phase of the tidal records with distance from the grounding line (most clearly displayed by the tilt records). We suggest that the viscous properties of glacier ice must be taken into account, and consequently that a viscoelastic-beam model must be used to adequately describe tidal bending of floating glaciers.

A linearized perturbation about a two-dimensional Vialov-Nyc ice-shect profile is used to investigate the sensitivity of the divide position at Siple Dome, West Antarctica, to small changes in the accumulation pattern and in the elevation of its lateral boundaries at the margins of Ice Streams C and D. Relaxation time-scales for the ice-sheet surface and divide position are derived from the perturbation theory. For Siple Dome, these time-scales are short: 450 800 years for surface adjustment, and 200-350 years for divide position adjustment. These short time-scales indicate that Siple Dome responds quickly to forcing at its boundaries. Therefore, the recent migration of the Siple Dome divide (determined from previous work) is probably a response to an ongoing, sustained forcing rather than a response to a long-past climate event such as the transition from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene.

Based on our analysis, the inferred rate of migration of the Siple Dome divide could be attained by: (1) a steady increase in the south north spatial accumulation gradient of 0.1-1.5 × 10−9 a −2, or (2) a steady increase (decrease) in elevation of the Siple Dome lateral boundary adjacent to a relict margin of Ice Stream D (Ice Stream C) of 0.005-0.040 m a−1 over the past several thousand years. The required forcing is quite small, and suggests that major changes in the configuration of Ice Streams C and D associated with major changes in the elevation at boundaries of Siple Dome have not occurred over the past several thousand years.

The surface-energy budget of the Arctic Ocean depends on the distribution of various sea-ice features that form by both mechanical and thermodynamic processes. Melt ponds, new ice and open water greatly affect the determination of surface albedo. However, even basic measurements of some surface-feature characteristics, such as areal extent of melt ponds, remain rare.

A method has been developed to assess the areal coverage of melt ponds, new ice and open water using video data from the Beaufort and Arctic Storms Experiment (BASE). A downward-looking video camera mounted on the underside of a Hercules C-130 aircraft provided clear images of the surface. Images acquired over multi-year ice on 21 September 1994 were analyzed using a spectral technique to determine the areal coverage of melt ponds, new ice and open water. Statistics from this analysis were then compared to previous field studies and to the Schramm and others (in press) sea-ice model.

An automatic ice-fabric analyzer has been developed, which can determine individual ,-axis orientations by image-analysis techniques. The analyzer consists of four major components: a sample stage, a pair of crossed polaroids, a charge coupled device (CCD) camera and a light source. Both the sample stage and the crossed polaroids can be rotated independently of each other by the stepping motors controlled by a personal computer (PC). Measurements are conducted as follows. An ice thin section is set on the sample stage and then the crossed polaroids are rotated. Thin-section images are recorded by the PC at intervals of 2° of rotation. From the image-intensity (gray value) dataset of each crystal in the thin section the extinction angles of individual crystals can be determined. Similarly, eight other extinction angles of individual crystals are obtained from eight other CCD camera positions with respect to the thin section: Finally, the .-axis orientation of individual crystals is calculated by using these extinction angles. With this technique, all crystals within the view of the CCD camera can be analyzed at the same time. In addition, with image-processing techniques the individual crystals are recognized automatically and other parameters, such as grain-size and grain shape, can be measured simultaneously. Textural studies of Dome Fuji (Antarctica) ice cores have been conducted with this analyzer.

Snow-cover models are used in many applications in today’s snow and ice research. Descriptions of changes in size and shape are a major problem in modelling the snow cover. Empirical models for kinetic growth under temperature gradients have been developed, as well as more complicated models based upon microstructure. In this work a simple; physically based model is derived which depends on one adjustable geometric factor only Snow texture is described as a body-centred cubic lattice containing source and sink grains. The latter grow as plates due to water-vapour transport in the layer as well as between the layers. The model was implemented in a research version of the one-dimensional snow-cover model SNOWPACK. Model outputs are compared to experiments done in the cold laboratory where sieved snow is subjected to temperature gradients. Disaggregated snow samples are analyzed by digital image processing, by sieving and by visual characterization. In order to determine grain-size as objectively as possible, these various methods are evaluated for compatibility. The new model simulates very well kinetic grain growth for densities of 100–200 kg m−3 and temperature gradients up to –200 Km−1. The model will be incorporated in the operational version of SNOWPACK.

Three-dimensional structures of temperature focused on Dome Fuji and east Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, simulated in a three-dimensional shallow ice model, are reported. With a geothermal heat flux of 54.6 mWm–2, as used in several modelling studies of the Antarctic ice sheet, and an enhancement factor of 1.3, which is smaller than in previous studies, the model result taking into account the glacial cycles is in good agreement with the borehole temperature and surface topography at Dome Fuji. The basal temperature at Dome Fuji must be at or very close to the pressure-melting point. The simulated amplitude of basal temperature through glacial/interglacial cycles is <1 K.
