Temperature variation on the Tibetan Plateau over the last 1000 years has been inferred using a composite δ18O record from four ice cores. Data from a new ice core recovered from the Puruogangri ice field in the central Tibetan Plateau are combined with those from three other cores (Dunde, Guliya and Dasuopu) recovered previously. The ice-core δ18O composite record indicates that the temperature change on the whole Tibetan Plateau is similar to that in the Northern Hemisphere on multi-decadal timescales except that there is no decreasing trend from AD 1000 to the late 19th century. The δ18O composite record from the northern Tibetan Plateau, however, indicates a cooling trend from AD 1000 to the late 19th century, which is more consistent with the Northern Hemisphere temperature reconstruction. The δ18O composite record reveals the existence of the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age (LIA) on the Tibetan Plateau. However, on the Tibetan Plateau the LIA is not the coldest period during the last millennium as in other regions in the Northern Hemisphere. The present study indicates that the 20th-century warming on the Tibetan Plateau is abrupt, and is warmer than at any time during the past 1000 years.

A study of c-axis orientations in the upper 1500m of the Dome C (East Antarctica) deep ice core has been carried out using an automatic ice-fabric analyzer (AIFA). Twenty-nine vertical and a few horizontal thin sections from different depths in the core have been analyzed. Several statistical parameters describing fabric strength and fabric shapes have been calculated from the c-axis orientation data. The fabric diagrams display a near-random c-axis orientation distribution in the uppermost parts of the ice sheet. A tendency of c-axis rotation towards a broad single-maximum fabric is observed in the lowest part of the studied interval. The fabric development at Dome C thus appears typical for ice-sheet summit and dome sites. The fabric development at Dome C is compared with the fabric evolution in the Dome F and GRIP ice cores, and data on crystal size obtained with image-analysis techniques are presented. Studies of misorientation angles between the c axes of neighbouring crystals reveal little evidence for polygonization, but microscopic observations show that sub-grain boundaries are present in half of the grains at any depth.

Information on deformation modes, fabric development and recrystallization processes was obtained by study of deep ice cores from polar ice sheets. It is shown that intracrystalline slip is the main deformation mechanism in polar ice sheets. Grain-boundary sliding does not appear to be a significant deformation mode. Special emphasis was laid on the occurrence of "laboratory" tertiary creep in ice sheets. The creep behavior is directly related to recrystallization processes. Grain-boundary migration associated with grain growth and rotation recrystallization accommodates dislocation slip and counteracts strain hardening. The fabric pattern is similar to that induced only by slip, even if rotation recrystallization slows down fabric development. Fabrics which develop during tertiary creep, and are associated with migration recrystallization, are typical recrystallization fabrics. They are associated with the fast boundary migration regime as observed in temperate glaciers. A decrease of the stress exponent is expected from 3, when migration recrystallization occurs, to a value ≤ 2 when normal grain growth occurs.

This study investigated the stable water isotopic (δ18O and δD) evolution of two snowpacks located at the same elevation on a north-facing (Nf) and a south-facing (Sf) slope within the Tarfala research catchment, northern Sweden, and the potential impact of pre-freshet snowpack melt on streamflow. Our results indicate that over the study period the Sf snowpack showed a more enriched isotopic composition, especially in the top of the profile, and contributed more snowmelt to streamflow than the Nf slope. The Sf snowpack also showed a significantly higher variability in snowpack δ18O levels and snowpack snow water equivalent (SWE) over time. Comparing snowpack and snowmelt isotopic values it was seen that the Sf slope experienced earlier snowmelt from upslope positions due to greater insolation that subsequently enhanced the meltwater flux at the base of downslope snowpacks. In contrast, the Nf slope primarily underwent changes within the snowpack and experienced relatively minimal melt. Detailed field-based isotopic snowmelt studies such as this highlight the potential importance of incorporating spatio-temporal runoff generation concepts into distributed energy-balance models, which could allow for more accurate prediction with regard to the spatio-temporal dynamics associated with the snowmelt ion pulse.

This work attempts to explain the fan-like landform assemblages observed in satellite images of the area covered by the former Scandinavian ice sheet (SIS). These assemblages have been interpreted as evidence of large ice streams within the SIS. If this interpretation is correct, then it calls into doubt current theories on the formation of ice streams. These theories regard soft sediment and topographic troughs as being the key determinants of ice-stream location. Neither can be used to explain the existence of ice streams on the flat, hard-rock area of the Baltic Shield. Initial results from a three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model indicate that interactions between ice flow, form and temperature can create patterns similar to those mentioned above. The model uses a realistic, 20 km resolution gridded topography and a simple parameterization of accumulation and ablation. It produces patterns of maximum ice-sheet extent, which are similar to those reconstructed from the area’s glacial geomorphology. Flow in the maximum, equilibrium ice sheet is dominated by wedges of warm, low-viscosity, fast-flowing ice. These are separated by areas of cold, slow-flowing ice. This patterning appears to develop spontaneously as the modelled ice sheet grows.

A new, clean, hot-water drill system (HWDS) was developed by the Science Management Office, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, for use in the Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (WISSARD) project to gain access to Subglacial Lake Whillans beneath ∼800 m of ice in West Antarctica. One primary borehole was drilled into the basal ice environment of Subglacial Lake Whillans during the initial field season in 2012/13. This paper describes the process of designing, fabricating, assembling, shipping, testing, commissioning and traversing the WISSARD HWDS leading up to the first scientific use of the system.

The King George Island ice cap, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, was studied between 1985 and 1992. At the steady-state equilibrium-line altitude of the ice cap, the mean annual temperature is -3.6°C, the mean summer (December-February) temperature is 0°C and annual precipitation is 800 mm w.e. Precipitation increases rapidly with elevation, and annual accumulation rate at the Main Dome summit reaches 2480 mm a−1. Between 1985 and 1991 the equilibrium-line elevation averaged 140-150 m a.s.l. The ice cap has been in an overall stable state for the past 20 years, going from a weak negative to a small positive mass imbalance as increased precipitation outweighs the effects of rising temperatures. Temperatures at the bottom of the active layer over most of the accumulation area are close to 0°C, with colder temperatures down to -1.9°C in the ablation zone. Soluble impurities in the ice cap are mainly from marine sources, while undissolved mineral material amounts to only 15-54% of the total microparticle content.

We present highly resolved, annually dated, calibrated proxies for atmospheric circulation from several Antarctic ice cores (ITASE (International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition), Siple Dome, Law Dome) that reveal decadal-scale associations with a South Pole ice-core 10Be proxy for solar variability over the last 600 years and annual-scale associations with solar variability since AD 1720. We show that increased (decreased) solar irradiance is associated with increased (decreased) zonal wind strength near the edge of the Antarctic polar vortex. The association is particularly strong in the Indian and Pacific Oceans and as such may contribute to understanding climate forcing that controls drought in Australia and other Southern Hemisphere climate events. We also include evidence suggestive of solar forcing of atmospheric circulation near the edge of the Arctic polar vortex based on ice-core records from Mount Logan, Yukon Territory, Canada, and both central and south Greenland as enticement for future investigations. Our identification of solar forcing of the polar atmosphere and its impact on lower latitudes offers a mechanism for better understanding modern climate variability and potentially the initiation of abrupt climate-change events that operate on decadal and faster scales.

Results of airborne radio echo-sounding (RES) in Antarctica are presented. Flight tracks covering 50% of the Antarctic Ice sheet on a 50 to 100 km square grid, flown using Inertial navigation, have errors <<5 km. Ice thicknesses determined from 35, 60, and 300 MHz RES records are accurate to 10 m or 1.5% thickness (whichever is greater). Altimetry, determining surface and sub-surface elevations, after corrections have errors <<50 m. An up-to-date coastline compiled from satellite imagery and all recent sources has frequencies for various coastal types of: ice shelves (44%), ice streams/outlet glaciers (13%), ice walls (38%), and rocks (5%). A new map of the ice sheet surface has been compiled from 101 000 RES data points, 5 000 Tropical Wind, Energy conversion and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE) balloon altimetry points, geodetic satellite and selected traverse elevations. The volume of the Antarctic ice sheet Including ice shelves has been calculated principally from RES data using various techniques as 30.11±2.5 × 106 km3. Frequency distributions for subgladal bedrock elevations for East and West Antarctica are presented. They conform approximately to Gaussian (normal) functions.

Melt-layer frequency and magnitude in polar and sub-polar ice cores have been interpreted as measures of past summer temperature, and calibrations have been proposed relating frequency of occurrence of ice layers in ice cores to past summer temperatures. But, observations in the percolation facies in Greenland and an analysis of the combined processes of meltwater infiltration and refreezing of water in snow indicate that, in addition to unusually high rates of meltwater input, formation of ice layers will also be facilitated by unusually cold initial conditions or early onset of melt. Uniform warming of both summer and winter conditions has the opposite effect and suppresses ice-layer formation in favor of uniform wetting and refreezing of the snowpack. Numerical modeling of infiltration and refreezing at a stratigraphic fine-to-coarse transition allows quantification of the effects of significant parameters (initial temperature, grain-size and density contrast across the stratigraphic transition, water-input rate and minimum impermeable-layer thickness). Calculations are made to distinguish threshold values of parameters at which infiltration progresses faster than refreezing, resulting in a break-through of water across the stratigraphic transition, from values leading to the formation of an ice layer when refreezing progresses faster than infiltration.

The Meteorological Service of Canada has developed a series of operational snow water equivalent (SWE) retrieval algorithms for central Canada, based on the vertically polarized difference index for the 19 and 37 GHz channels of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I). Separate algorithms derive SWE for open environments, deciduous, coniferous and sparse forest cover. A final SWE value represents the area-weighted average based on the proportional land cover within each pixel. In this study, 5 day averaged (pentad) passive-microwave-derived SWE imagery for the winter season (December–February) of 1994/95 is compared to in situ data from central Canada in order to assess algorithm performance. Investigation of regions with varying proportional land cover within the four algorithm classes shows that retrieved SWE remains within ±10–20mm of surface observations, independent of fractional within-pixel land cover. Following algorithm evaluation, ten winter seasons (1988/89 through 1997/98) of pentad central North American SWE imagery are subjected to a rotated principal-component analysis (PCA). Although there are no trends in total study-area SWE, the PCA results identify the interseasonal variability in the SWE accumulation and ablation centers of action through the SSM/I time series.

We use time-lapse photography, MODIS satellite imagery, ocean wave measurements and regional broadband seismic data to demonstrate that icebergs that calve from Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, can generate ocean waves that are detectable over 150 km from their source. The waves, which are recorded seismically, have distinct spectral peaks, are not dispersive and persist for several hours. On the basis of these observations, we suggest that calving events at Jakobshavn Isbræ can stimulate seiches, or basin eigenmodes, in both Ilulissat Icefjord and Disko Bay. Our observations furthermore indicate that coastal, land-based seismometers located near calving termini (e.g. as part of the new Greenland Ice Sheet Monitoring Network (GLISN)) can aid investigations into the largely unexplored, oceanographic consequences of iceberg calving.

The Ultevis plateau, northwestern Sweden, has a relief of less than 200 m, yet bears three different kinds of landscape, classified according to the degree of glacial erosion. The first type is restricted mainly to topographic highs and has almost entirely escaped erosion, despite complete and prolonged ice cover during the late Weichselian. The other two landscape types are distinguished depending on whether older land- forms have been completely erased or not. The latter two appear to have undergone erosion only briefly. The transitions between landscape zones are usually sharp, and specific boundary landforms occur. The Scandinavian ice sheet was cold-based in its central areas during its maximum. During the deglaciation, both the dry/wet-base boundary and ice margin migrated inwards, at different speeds. When the ice front retreated faster than the thermal transition zone, the wet-base marginal zone shrank and erosion was reduced or avoided. Where the wet-base zone was of limited longitudinal extent, as on the Ultevis plateau, conversion from a frozen to a thawed bed was incomplete, leaving a patchwork of preserved glacial and non-glacial morphologies.

We developed a model to calculate the spectral reflectance of snow by normalizing the topographic effect and correcting the atmospheric effect simultaneously. This model considers the shadowing effect of the surrounding terrain on both direct and diffuse irradiance by using the obstruction coefficient in sun-ray direction and introducing the isotropic view factor. In addition, a new method to calculate the surrounding-reflected irradiance by introducing the shape factor which can account for the radiation reflected from the surrounding pixels was developed. The model was tested in the upper stream of the Heihe river basin, Qilian mountains, China, using a subscene of a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image acquired on 20 April 2000. The result showed that the model could eliminate most of the shadowing effect of rugged terrain and could estimate snow reflectance correctly. The problem of data saturation when retrieving snow reflectance is also discussed.

Spectral albedos of open water, nilas, nilas with frost flowers, slush, and first-year ice with both thin and thick snow cover were measured in the East Antarctic sea-ice zone during the Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystems eXperiment II (SIPEX II) from September to November 2012, near 65°S, 120°E. Albedo was measured across the ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared (nIR) wavelengths, augmenting a dataset from prior Antarctic expeditions with spectral coverage extended to longer wavelengths, and with measurement of slush and frost flowers, which had not been encountered on the prior expeditions. At visible and UV wavelengths, the albedo depends on the thickness of snow or ice; in the nIR the albedo is determined by the specific surface area. The growth of frost flowers causes the nilas albedo to increase by 0.2–0.3 in the UV and visible wavelengths. The spectral albedos are integrated over wavelength to obtain broadband albedos for wavelength bands commonly used in climate models. The albedo spectrum for deep snow on first-year sea ice shows no evidence of light-absorbing particulate impurities (LAI), such as black carbon (BC) or organics, which is consistent with the extremely small quantities of LAI found by filtering snow meltwater. Estimated BC mixing ratios were in the range 0.1–0.5 ng of carbon per gram of snow.

Bakaninbreen, Svalbard, started to surge during 1985–86, and developed a surge front up to 60 m high. Associated with down-glacier propagation of this surge front was the formation of shear zones and thrust faults, some of which revealed basally derived debris at the glacier surface. Hot water drilling and sampling of basal material showed the glacier bed to be soft sediment more than 1 m thick. A high-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey at 100 MHz was conducted along three 500 m lines parallel to glacier flow on the surge front. The aims were to investigate the internal geometry of the thrust features, and the processes of entrainment of basal debris into bulk glacier ice.

A strong linear reflector was seen on the survey, but it is about 15–20 m above the bed as identified from drilling depths. It probably represents the upper interface of a layer of debris-rich basal ice. Several extensive englacial reflectors were interpreted as debris-laden emergent thrust features, varying in thickness from 0.1 to 1.1 m. These features were mapped at the glacier surface, and drilling and sediment sampling verified the interpretation. Other englacial features included regions of incipient thrusting at the basal reflector, and an extensive region of scattering up to 30 m above the basal reflector that we interpret as folds, or blind thrusts that terminate englacially. Our results clearly demonstrate the potential of GPR for mapping internal glacial structure, and suggest that thrusting is an important process by which sediment is incorporated into glacier ice in the highly compressive region at the surge front.

In the 1997/98 austral summer field season, we conducted a ground-penetrating radar survey on the northern shear margin of Ice Stream C, West Antarctica. The radar data were used to identify features near the surface of the ice, including internal layers and buried crevasses. The survey was intended to determine the variation in the age of buried crevasses along the ice stream. A procedure was developed by which the accumulation rate and the age of buried crevasses can be estimated based on radar records, firn-core measurements and the assumption that the crevasses were once open to the surface. With this method we were able to determine the age of buried crevasses with a standard error of 15–20%. We discuss our new results in conjunction with those of Retzlaff and Bentley (1993) on the southern margin of the ice stream. Typical crevasse ages were found to range from 120 to 200 years, although crevasses in a few areas were significantly younger. The youngest crevasses are at the extreme upstream end of the survey, but the next youngest were found midway along the ice stream. Crevasses upstream and downstream are older, with ages 40–80 years greater than those in the middle. Crevasses on the northern shear margin of tributary C2 were 30–50 years older than those on the southern margin. These patterns of crevassing suggest that variability in shear margin response to changes in ice-stream flow played an essential role in determining the time at which crevassing became inactive.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration has photographed glacial areas in Norway for several decades. Detailed maps or digital terrain models have been made for selected glaciers from vertical aerial photographs. Multiple models of seven glaciers have been used here to calculate glacier volume change during the time between mappings using the geodetic method. Analyses and results are presented and compared with traditional mass-balance measurements. We estimated uncertainties of ±1.3–2.7mw.e. for the geodetic method, and ±1.3 –3.5mw.e. for the traditional method. The discrepancies between the methods varied between 0.4 and 4.7 mw.e. All glaciers decreased in volume from the 1960s/70s to the 1990s, except Hardangerjøkulen. This glacier experienced a significant increase in volume: the geodetic and traditional methods showed net balance values of +6.8m and +9.4mw.e., respectively. Trollbergdalsbreen had the largest total volume loss: the geodetic and traditional methods showed net balance values of –12.3 and –16.8mw.e.

Due to the lack of measurements of ice velocity, mass balance, glacier geometry and other baseline data, model-based studies of glacial systems in the Nepal Himalaya are very limited. Here a numerical ice-flow model has been developed for glacier AX010 in order to study its relation to local climate and investigate the possible causes of its general retreat since the end of the Little Ice Age. First, an attempt is made to simulate the historical front variations, considering each climatic parameter separately. Good agreement between the observations and model projections can be obtained under the assumption that variations in glacier front position are a response to changes in temperature alone. The same assumption is made about future changes to explore the 21st-century evolution of the glacier. Under a no-change scenario, the glacier will retreat by another ∽600m by AD 2100, whereas it is projected to vanish completely during this century for all trends with a temperature rise larger than +2.5˚C by AD 2100 with respect to the 1980–99 mean. With constant precipitation at the 1980–99 mean, the model predicts that the glacier will cease to exist at AD 2083, 2056 or 2049 if the temperature rises linearly by 3˚C, 4.5˚C or 6˚C respectively by the end of this century. With an additional range of precipitation changes between –30% and +30%, the life expectancy of glacier AX010 varies by 18, 6 and 2 years for the respective temperature rises. Thus the role of precipitation becomes minimal for the higher trends of temperature rise.

Analyses of air extracted from polar ice cores are the most straightforward method of reconstructing the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and their variations for past climatic epochs. These measurements show that the concentration of the three most important greenhouse gases (other than water vapour) CO2, CH4 and N2O have steadily increased during the past 250 years due to anthropogenic activities (Prather and others, 2001; Prentice and others, 2001). Ice-core results also provided the first evidence of a substantial increase in the concentration of the three gases during the transition from the last glacial epoch to the Holocene (Raynaud and others, 1993). However, results from different cores are not always in agreement concerning details and small, short-term variations. the composition of the air enclosed in bubbles can be slightly changed by fractionation during the enclosure process, by chemical reactions and/or biological activity in the ice and by fractionation during the air extraction. We compile here several records with short-term variations or anomalies and discuss possible causes, taking into account improved analytical techniques and new results.
