Locations of subglacial lakes discovered under fast-moving West Antarctic ice streams tend to be associated with topographic features of the subglacial bed or with areas that have strong variations in basal conditions. Inversion of ice-stream surface velocity indicates that basal conditions under ice streams can be highly variable and that there can be widespread regions where basal traction is high. To seek an explanation for why lakes appear to be sited near areas with high basal traction, we use numerical models to simulate ice-stream dynamics, thermodynamics and subglacial water flow. We demonstrate that the ice flow over high basal traction areas produces favourable conditions for the ponding of meltwater. Energy dissipation associated with ice sliding over a region with high basal traction constitutes a water source supplying a lake, and ice-thickness perturbations induced by ice flow over variable traction create local minima in hydraulic potential. Variations in thermodynamic processes caused by such ice flow could be responsible for limiting the horizontal extent of the subglacial lakes.

Observations of the δ18O in precipitation from four ice cores (Puruogangri, Dasuopu, Guliya and Dunde) from the Tibetan Plateau (TP) provide additional important perspectives on climatic warming during the 20th century in a region where there is a lack of instrumental and observational climate data. The average δ18O and surface air temperature over the TP show very similar fluctuations since 1955, which provides new evidence that the δ18O in the ice cores is at least in part a temperature signal. Nevertheless differences and similarities exist among the four records. Some climatic events, particularly the major cooling episodes, are synchronously recorded in Puruogangri and Dasuopu and in the Bange meteorological air-temperature record. The major features of the ice cores allow them to be classified into two groups, the northern TP group (Dunde and Guliya) and southern TP group (Puruogangri and Dasuopu). This classification is determined by the different processes driving climate change between the northern and southern regions of the TP. Moreover, the δ18O variability between the ice cores within each region further documents the smaller-scale regional variability.

Antarctic fast-ice variation is investigated using satellite images and ship’s ice navigation logs, focusing on break-up phenomena in Lützow-Holm Bay. Although spatio-temporal scales for breakup events vary somewhat for each event, their commencement is generally in autumn and almost always in the same region. Specifically, the 1997/98 break-up event occurred over a wide area and continued for a long time after the initial break-up. Since then, break-ups have recurred until 2004, and a total of 20 annual events have been detected and monitored since 1980. Moreover, information from icebreaker navigation logs shows that unstable fast-ice conditions occurred in the 1980s and after the late 1990s. From the analysis of surface meteorological data and the offshore pack-ice distribution, anomalously shallow snow-cover depths and a peculiar retreat pattern of the ice edge are found to be factors that favour fast-ice break-up. The pack-ice distribution controls the propagation of ocean swell inside the bay; encroaching swells are likely to mechanically disintegrate fast-ice during autumn prior to the annual formation of the protective pack-ice cover to the north. Less snow cover also leads to fast-ice weakening as the melt season progresses and broken floes are then transported offshore by prevailing southerly winds.

From many field observations, it has become well known that pancake ice is ubiquitous in a wave-dominated sea. These strikingly uniform circular floes are consistently found in the Antarctic seas during the ice-formation season. Their presence has also been reported in the Bering Sea, the Greenland Sea and in polynyas and leads within pack ice. In one estimate made by P. Wadhams (personal communication, 1991) the areal coverage of pancake ice in the Southern Ocean marginal ice zone is around 6 × 106 km2. Pancake ice forms through a combination of thermodynamic growth and mechanical thickening, caused by rafting of floes that is driven by wave motion This complex growth process is much faster than pure thermodynamic growth and hence may be the main factor responsible for ice-edge advance in marginal ice zones. In this paper we simulate wave/ice-floe dynamics by combining a new three-dimensional discrete element model with wave hydrodynamics. In one set of simulations we calculate ice-drift speed as a function of wave amplitude and ice collisional dynamics. In a second set of simulations we place a non-reflecting vertical barrier meant to simulate the fast-ice edge. The simulation results show the rate of increase of the ice impact force on the barrier, and the accompanying thickening of the rafted region in front of the barrier, as a function of wave amplitude. Results from this study will help quantify the formation process for pancake-ice covers in a wave field.

Processes and mechanisms of erosion, transport and deposition within high-magnitude outburst floods such as jökulhlaups and lahars are poorly understood and remain largely unquantified. This study therefore applies a two-dimensional or depth-averaged hydrodynamic model, with fully integrated sediment transport, to reconstruct a Holocene jökulhlaup to have occurred from Kverkfjöll volcano, Iceland. Results indicate simultaneous inundation of multiple channels, flow around islands, hydraulic jumps and multi-directional flow including backwater areas and hydraulic ponding. These flow characteristics are typical of outburst floods that are volcanically triggered, flow through steep volcanic terrain and contain high concentrations of volcaniclastic sediment. Kverkfjöll jökulhlaups had low frontal flow velocities but as stage increased, velocities reached 5–15ms–1. Peak stage was prolonged in zones of hydraulic ponding, but generally attenuated in magnitude and duration downstream. Suspended load transport persisted over the entire hydrograph but bed load transport was spatially discontinuous and comprised distinct pulses. A hierarchy of landforms is proposed, ranging from highest energy zones (erosional gorges, scoured bedrock, cataracts and spillways) to lowest (valley-fills, bars and slackwater deposits). Bedrock erosion was generally where flow exceeded ∽3m flow depth, ∽7ms–1 flow velocity, ∽1×102Nm–2 shear stress and 3 ×102Wm–2 stream power. Deposition occurred below ∽8m flow depth, 11 ms–1 flow velocity, 5 ×102Nm–2 shear stress and 3 ×103Wm–2 stream power. Hydraulic ranges associated with erosion and deposition have considerable overlap due to transitional flow phenomena, transitions in sediment concentration and the influence of upstream effects, such as hydraulic ponding behind topographic constrictions. These results are the first of coupled hydraulic and sediment transport phenomena in high-magnitude outburst floods with fluid rheology and high sediment content, such as jökulhlaups and dilute lahars. Modelled changes in sediment mass closely resembled field-mapped zones of erosion and deposition. This paper therefore introduces a capability to simulate rapid landscape change due to high-magnitude outburst flood.

We discuss the inclusion of the subsurface heat-conduction flux into the calculation of the energy balance and ablation at the glacier–atmosphere interface. Data from automatic weather stations are used to force an energy-balance model at several locations on alpine glaciers and at one site in the dry Andes of central Chile. The heat-conduction flux is computed using a two-layer scheme, assuming that 36% of the net shortwave radiation is absorbed by the surface layer and that the rest penetrates into the snowpack. We compare simulations conducted with and without subsurface heat flux. Results show that assuming a surface temperature of zero degrees leads to a larger overestimation of melt at the sites in the accumulation area (10.4–13.3%) than in the ablation area (0.5–2.8%), due to lower air temperatures and the presence of snow. The difference between simulations with and without heat conduction is also high at the beginning and end of the ablation season (up to 29% for the first 15 days of the season), when air temperatures are lower and snow covers the glacier surface, while they are of little importance during periods of sustained melt at all the locations investigated.

Air–snow transfer processes impact both ice-core interpretation and exchange affecting atmospheric chemistry. An understanding of seasonal differences in the character of the surface snow will facilitate evaluation of possible preferential seasonal exchange of reactive chemical species. Both diffusive processes and advective (ventilation) processes can serve to alter the physical, chemical and isotopic character of snow and firn. In this paper, we examine measurements of surface roughness over the course of a year at Summit, Greenland, and the implications for snow and firn ventilation. At Summit, during the winter-over experiment, summer and fall sastrugi amplitudes were approximately 5 cm and had smoothly curved profiles. the average amplitudes experienced mild increases in January, but by the end of February through March the amplitude increased to approximately 20 cm, and the profiles exhibited more abrupt geometries. Calculations are performed to show the potential impact of the changing roughness on interstitial ventilation rates in the snow, assuming that the permeability profile does not change in time. Under high winds, ventilation velocities in the near-surface snow can be up to 3 cms–1 in the winter, compared to 1 cms–1 in the summer. the frequency of 12 ms–1 winds in the summer, however, is less than in the winter. Under low-wind conditions, the summer roughness causes ventilation rates that are comparable to diffusion rates. However, in winter even 5 ms–1 wind conditions can cause the interstitial airflow due to ventilation to exceed the diffusion rates.

The proposed RECoverable Autonomous Sonde (RECAS) will allow analysis and sampling of subglacial water while the subglacial lake remains isolated from the surface. The probe is equipped with two electrically heated melting tips, one on the bottom and one on the top of a cylindrical probe. When one of the tips is powered, the RECAS moves up or down similarly to a hot-point thermal electric drill. The electric power and signal cable is coiled inside the probe on an electric-motor-powered coil. When the lower tip is powered, the probe advances downwards by gravity. In order to move the probe up, power is applied to the upper heated tip and the coil motor pulls the cable, moving the probe upwards and melting the borehole above the probe. A conventional internal combustion engine electric generator on the glacier surface provides 9–10 kW of power to the RECAS via an umbilical cable stored in the probe. Electric power enables a penetration rate of 2.4–2.9m h–1, and thus 4–5 months will be required to reach a depth of 3500 m and return to the surface.

To study the glaciological processes controlling the mass budget of Greenland’s peripheral glaciers and ice caps, field measurements were carried out on Qaanaaq ice cap, a 20 km long ice cap in northwestern Greenland. In the summer of 2012, we measured surface melt rate, ice flow velocity and ice thickness along a survey route spanning the ice margin (200m a.s.l.) to the ice-cap summit (1110m a.s.l.). Melt rates in the ablation area were clearly influenced by dark materials covering the ice surface, where degree-day factors varied from 5.44 mm w.e. K–1 d–1 on a clean surface to 8.26 mm w.e. K–1 d–1 in the dark regions. Ice velocity showed diurnal variations, indicating the presence of surface-meltwater induced basal sliding. Mean ice thickness along the survey route was 120 m, with a maximum thickness of 165 m. Ice velocity and temperature fields were computed using a thermomechanically coupled numerical glacier model. Modelled ice temperature, obtained by imposing estimated annual mean air temperature as the surface boundary condition, was substantially lower than implied by the observed ice velocity. This result suggests that the ice dynamics and thermodynamics of the ice cap are significantly influenced by heat transfer from meltwater and changing ice geometry.

In the early hours of 25 December 2012, an attempt to explore Subglacial Lake Ellsworth, West Antarctica, using a specially designed hot-water drill, was halted. This UK project, involving several universities, the British Antarctic Survey and the National Oceanography Centre, had been in planning for 10 years. The project developed a full blueprint for subglacial lakes research, involving access to the subglacial environment through deep drilling, direct measurement and sampling of water and sediment by the construction of a probe and sediment corer, and environmental protocols to ensure cleanliness in line with international agreements on stewardship and protection of subglacial systems. Drilling was ceased after the main borehole failed to link with a subsurface cavity of water, built up over ∽40 hours. Without this link, insufficient water was available to continue drilling downwards to the lake, ∽3000 m beneath the surface. On return to the UK, an external review of the programme was undertaken to formally assess the reasons for the fieldwork failure, and to make recommendations on the modifications necessary for success. From this review, the Lake Ellsworth programme formulated a pathway along which a second attempt to explore the lake can be developed. Here details of the Lake Ellsworth field experiment, the circumstances that led to its failure and the corrections required are presented. Hot-water drilling is still regarded as the only feasible scheme for assuring clean access to the subglacial environment. The lessons learned from the Lake Ellsworth experience are substantial, however, and demonstrate that considerable technological and methodological advances are necessary for successful future research on subglacial lakes beneath thick (>2 km) ice.

Variations in the depth of radar-detectable englacial layers (isochrones) are commonly used to assess past variability in accumulation rates, but little is known about the effect of internal and basal flow variations on isochrone deflections (e.g. bumps, troughs). In this paper, we show how the isochrones are affected by such variation using a three-dimensional flow model to investigate changes in the flow mode and in increased basal melting. We also investigate how transverse flows with lateral velocity gradients affect the development of isochrones. We use the model to visualize how such variations will be seen in radar lines which cross the flow direction. We show that in the presence of lateral gradients in the flow field we can produce bumps and troughs when viewed along transects perpendicular to the flow. The model results show that the influences of flow convergence, melting and changes in flow mode, when coupled together, affect isochrones over the whole depth of the ice sheet. Finally, changes in the near-surface layers cannot be solely attributed to spatial variation in the accumulation rate; there can also be a strong signal from changes in the flow mode.

Albedo is an important parameter in the energy balance of bare-ice surfaces and modulates glacier melt rates. The prolongation of the ablation period enforces the albedo feedback and highlights the need for profound knowledge on impacts of bare-ice albedo on glacier mass balance. In this study, we assess the mass balance sensitivity of 12 Swiss glaciers with abundant long-term in-situ data on changes in bare-ice albedo. We use pixel-based bare-ice albedo derived from Landsat 8. A distributed mass-balance model is applied to the period 1997–2016 and experiments are performed to assess the impact of albedo changes on glacier mass balance. Our results indicate that glacier-wide mass-balance sensitivities to changes in bare-ice albedo correlate strongly with mean annual mass balances (r2 = 0.81). Large alpine glaciers react more sensitively to bare-ice albedo changes due to their ablation areas being situated at lower elevations. We find average sensitivities of glacier-wide mass balance of −0.14 m w.e. a−1 per 0.1 albedo decrease. Although this value is considerably smaller than sensitivity to air temperature change, we stress the importance of the enhanced albedo feedback that will be amplified due to atmospheric warming and a suspected darkening of glacier surface in the near future.

The relationship between δ18O and air temperature at Neumayer station, Ekstrmisen, Antarctica, was investigated using fresh-snow samples from the time period 1981–2000. A trajectory model that calculated 5 day-backward trajectories was used to study the influence of different synoptic weather situations and thus of different moisture sources on this correlation. Generally a high correlation between air temperature and δ18O was found, but the quality of the δ18O–T relationship varied with the different trajectory classes. Additionally, the sea-ice coverage on the travel path of the moist air was considered. The amount of open ocean water underneath the trajectory has a large influence on the δ18O–T relationship. For trajectories that lead completely above open water, no significant correlation between δ18O and T was found, because mixing with air masses containing additionally evaporated water vapour from the ocean influences the isotope ratio of precipitation. A very high correlation, however, was found for transports over the completely ice-covered Weddell Sea.

As part of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) project, a traverse was carried out from November 2001 to January 2002 through Terre Adélie, George V Land, Oates Land and northern Victoria Land, for a total length of about 1875 km. The research goal is to determine the latitudinal and longitudinal variability of physical, chemical and isotopic parameters along three transects: one west–east transect (WE), following the 2150m contour line (about 400 km inland of the Adélie, George V and Oates coasts), and two north–south transects (inland Terre Adélie and Oates Coast–Talos Dome–Victoria Land). The intersection between the WE and Oates Coast–Victoria Land transects is in the Talos Dome area. Along the traverse, eight 2 m deep snow pits were dug and sampled with a 2.5 cm depth resolution. For spatial variability, 1 m deep integrated samples were collected every 5 km (363 sampling sites). In the snow-pit stratigraphy, pronounced annual cycles, with summer maxima, were observed for nssSO42–, MSA, NO3– and H2O2. The seasonality of these chemical trace species was used in combination with stable-isotope stratigraphy to derive reliable and temporally representative snow-accumulation rates. The study of chemical, isotopic and accumulation-rate variability allowed the identification of a distribution pattern which is controlled not only by altitude and distance from the sea, but also by the complex circulation of air masses in the study area. In particular, although the Talos Dome area is almost equidistant from the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea, local atmospheric circulation is such that the area is strongly affected only by the Ross Sea. Moreover, we observed a decrease in concentration of aerosol components in the central portion of the WE transect and in the southern portion of the Talos Dome transect; this decrease was linked to the higher stability of atmospheric pressure due to the channelling of katabatic winds.

The angular dependence and polarization behaviour of back-scattering and emission of polar firn at 5.2 GHz and 10.3 GHz were measured during an oversnow traverse in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The signatures emphasize the importance of snow stratification in the interpretation of microwave remote sensing measurements. Highest backscattering coefficients and little angular variations were observed for refrozen firn near the coast. In permanently dry snow, areas with high accumulation rates and homogeneous snow morphology showed low backscattering coefficients and high emissivities. Pronounced layering and related density variations in low accumulation zones resulted in increased polarization differences of brightness temperatures and increased like-polarized backscattering coefficients. This behaviour is confirmed by the analysis of C-band scatterometer measurements of the Active Microwave Instrument aboard the European Space Agency's ERS-1.

The melt rates of Antarctic icebergs derived by Morgan and Budd (1978) were based primarily on the distribution of iceberg concentrations, data on iceberg size distribution being limited. Recently, more detailed data have been obtained, especially north of lat. 60°S which allow more precise calculations of the changes in size during drifting. On Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) voyages each summer since 1977, observations of icebergs have included photographs, number per unit area from ship’s radar, widths, heights, and shapes. These data have allowed separate calculations to be made for tabular icebergs which give a clearer indication of the contribution to average size changes of melting, breakage, and rollover. New data from satellite transponders placed on icebergs have provided more definite estimates of the average northward and then eastward drift rates of icebergs near 90°E. Combined with the new data on size more accurate melt rates have been derived. Detailed measurements with expendable bathy-thermographs (XBT) along the shipping routes have provided more definite data on water temperature which allow the melt rates to be studied as a function of temperature. Historical data on iceberg locations have been used to estimate the melt and decay rates of the icebergs at higher temperatures.

Flow of ice through narrow channels is Significantly affected by the amount of Shear Strength in plastic rheologies used in Sea-ice models as well as in reality. When thermodynamics is added to this problem, the capability of multiple flow States for the Same forcing through narrow passages arises. To understand this problem and examine the potential for Seasonal Stoppage of flow through passages constraining the Arctic basin outflow, the effect of Sea-ice rheology on idealized flow through narrow passages is first analyzed. This ideal analysis is then combined with thermodynamic effects and fluctuating wind fields in an Arctic basin dynamic–thermodynamic Sea-ice model with multiple outlet passages. The results demonstrate that the capability for multiple flow States existing through passages depends on the initial conditions and general ‘climate’ State, and yield insight into the general parameter range over which the Seasonal Stoppage might irreversibly Shift to an unconstrained outflow regime.

The Dome Fuji Project is a comprehensive study of present and past glaeiological/climatological features of the Antarctic ice sheet in east Dronning Maud Land. Field observations on a 100U km traverse route from the coast to Dome Fuji slum changes in various glaciological parameters with surface elevation and distance from the coast. Deep ice-core drilling at Dome Fuji was started in August 1995 and reached a depth of 2503.52 m in December 1996. in situ core analyses revealed 25 visible tephra layers and a number of distinct cloudy bands in the ice.

Old ice for palaeoenvironmental studies retrieved by deep core drilling in the central regions of the large ice sheets can also be retrieved from the ice-sheet margins. the δ18O content of the surface ice was studied at 15 different Greenland ice-margin locations. At some locations, two or more records were obtained along closely spaced parallel sampling profiles, showing good reproducibility of the records. We present ice-margin δ18O records reaching back to the Pleistocene. Many of the characteristic δ18O variations known from Greenland deep ice cores can be recognized, allowing an approximate time-scale to be established along the ice-margin records. A flowline model is used to determine the location on the ice sheet where the margin ice was originally deposited as snow. the Pleistocene–Holocene δ18O change at the deposition sites is determined by comparing the δ18O values in the ice-margin record to the present δ18O values of the surface snow at the deposition sites. on the northern slope of the Greenland ice sheet, the Pleistocene–Holocene δ18O change is about 10‰ in contrast to a change of 6–7‰ at locations near the central ice divide. This is in accordance with deep ice-core results. We conclude that δ18O records measured on ice from the Greenland ice-sheet margin provide useful information about past climate and dynamics of the ice sheet, and thus are important (and cheap) supplements to deep ice-core records.

Although the glaciers in the Antarctic periphery make up a large fraction of all mountain glaciers and ice caps on Earth, a detailed glacier inventory of the region is lacking. We compile such an inventory, recording areas, area-altitude distributions, terminus characteristics and volume estimates. Glaciers on the mainland are excluded. The inventory is derived from the Antarctic Digital Database and some manual digitization. We additionally rely on satellite imagery, digital elevation models and a flowshed algorithm to classify ice bodies. We find 1133 ice caps and 1619 mountain glaciers covering a total of 132 867 ± 6643 km2. Estimated total volume corresponds to 0.121 ± 0.010 m sea-level equivalent. Of the total glacier area, 99% drains either into ice shelves (63%) or into the ocean (36%). The inventory will provide a database for glacier mass-balance assessments, modelling and projections, and help to reduce the uncertainties in previous studies.
