Mini-avalanche systems were constructed both in a low-temperature laboratory and in a snowfield, and the behaviour of the flowing snow was observed in each case. Velocity profiles for the individual snow particles were determined and these implied that a viscous force, which has been neglected in most previous numerical simulations of snow-avalanche motion, needs to be taken into account for many avalanches. Kinematic viscosity coefficients for the fluidized snow were also measured using a modified Stormer-type viscometer. Substituting the dry-friction value and the kinematic viscosity coefficient for fluidized snow into the equation for avalanche motion, numerical simulation of natural events was achieved for the Shiai-dani region. Taking viscous resistance factors into account led to the conclusion that the magnitude of turbulent resistance of snow in avalanche systems is probably much smaller than that represented by the values previously in use.

A two-dimensional particle simulation model of the sea-ice ridging process is developed. In this model, ridges are formed from an intact layer of newly frozen lead ice colliding with a thick multi-year floe. Blocks broken from the leading edge of the lead ice collect above and beneath the multi-year floe to form the characteristic ridge structure seen in the central Arctic. The total energy consumed in ridging ice, which is converted into the potential energy of the ridge structure and dissipated by the frictional and inelastic contacts between blocks of ice, is calculated explicitly. The results of preliminary numerical experiments using this model indicate that the amount of energy required to ridge ice may be much larger than previous estimates.

A new surface classification algorithm for monitoring snow and ice masses based on data from the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) is presented. The algorithm is applied to the Greenland ice sheet for the period 2000–05 and exploits the spectral variability of ice and snow reflectance to determine the surface classes dry snow, wet snow and glacier ice. The result is a monthly glacier surface type (GST) product on a 1 km resolution grid. The GST product is based on a grouped criteria technique with spectral thresholds and normalized indices for the classification on a pixel-by-pixel basis. The GST shows the changing surface classes, revealing the impact of climate variations on the Greenland ice sheet over time. The area of wet snow and glacier ice is combined into the glacier melt area (GMA) product. The GMA is analyzed in relation to the different surface classes in the GST product. The results are validated with data from weather stations and similar types of satellite-derived products. The validation shows that the automated algorithm successfully distinguishes between the different surface types, implying that the product is a promising indicator of climate change impact on the Greenland ice sheet.

Icing measurements were carried out in natural winter clouds with an instrumented wind tunnel set up at the summit of Puy de Dome (1 500 m a.s.l.). The microphysical data (liquid water content, droplet spectra) were obtained by using the particle measuring system PMS ASSP 100. The ice density was measured on a rotating cylinder and the ice deposit of the cross-section was photographed on a fixed cylinder. The density measurements ranged from 300 to 900 kg m–3 during the experioment and are in agreement with Macklin’s results (1962). The profile of the ice deposit is comparedto the profile predicted by the model of Lozowski and others (19791, which considers a fixed density.

We propose to improve this model by talking into account the variation of ice density with the angle of impact on the cylinder. This calculation is based on Macklin’s results and on the determination of the local impact speed by using the result of Langrature, air speed, liquid wter content, and, especially, the droplet distribution. The improvement is not sufficiemuir and Blodgett (1960). The variation o fice density with the angle depends on various parameters: pressure, tempen to explain some observed profiles; this may be attributed to the fact that the model is not time-dependent.

Several recent projects associated with the IPICS (International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences) 2k array have demanded the recovery of ice core to depths in excess of several hundred metres (e.g. Flade Isblink, Greenland (2006), Aurora Basin, Antarctica (2008/09), NEEM, Greenland (2011), Aurora Basin North (2013/14) and Renland ice cap, Greenland (2015)). These projects require that the overall system weight is low, that the ability to set up and operate are within the limitations of a small-camp environment and that the overall logistical and transportation costs are kept to a minimum. Using these criteria, a new drilling system capable of drilling >400m depth was seen as a useful future development. Here we report on a new intermediate-depth drilling system designed to recover high-quality 98 mm diameter ice cores from close to surface down to depths of 1000 m by two or more operators in a small deep-field camp environment. The total weight of the system on the snow surface is ∼490 kg, of which the intermediate-depth winch is the single heaviest component at 305 kg with 1000 m of cable.

An experiment to investigate wave-induced floe response and floe-floe interactions was conducted in the Ross Sea marginal ice zone during austral summer 1999. Three types of sensors were used: global positioning system (GPS) receivers; triaxial accelerometers; and compasses. The accelerometer data reveal consistent bands of energy centred at about 0.1 and 1.35 Hz, the latter an unexplained but common feature of such experiments. The GPS data also contain energy near 0.1 Hz, which may suggest that GPS receivers can detect the ocean-wave-induced lateral motion of ice floes.

The relations between seasonal changes in ice speed, longitudinal extension rate and terminus position are investigated for Columbia Glacier, Alaska, over the period 1977–87. The lower reach of the glacier is studied using repeat aerial photography, which extends from the terminus to the base of an icefall about 14 km up-glacier. There are regular seasonal cycles in speed and stretching rate. These cycles continue after the glacier retreats off the shoal at the end of the fjord (in about 1983), indicating that factors other than backstress, such as seasonal changes in subglacial water, control the speed of the glacier. Terminus position appears to be linked with thinning induced by longitudinal extension, as predicted by the calving model proposed by Van der Veen (1996).

This paper describes seasonal variations on Strandline Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, obtained from measurements during two field campaigns (2000/01 and 2002/03). By applying different methodologies and techniques, it was possible to calculate summer changes in thickness (mean decrease over the whole glacier surface of 0.04 mw.e.) and in volume (decrease of 352 μ3 at the terminus). This serves to identify and quantify the processes responsible for these variations (e.g. melting, evaporation, wind erosion/deposition and calving) and to understand the energy transfers at the glacier–air interface. One particular feature of the glacier is the presence of an ice cliff at the terminus, which causes ablation owing to dry calving. This process brought about a summer retreat rate of 1 mweek–1 in the central part of the front during the study period. Qualitative observations carried out during previous field campaigns and quantitative analysis performed during the last two expeditions have provided an understanding of the mechanism underlying the ablation processes, thus confirming the available literature on this topic.

Surface spectral-albedo data collected over snow-covered first-year and multi-year sea ice under diffuse sky conditions during the springtime transition are examined. Of specific interest is the relationship between changes in the visible and near-infrared albedo of sea ice and concurrent changes in the geophysical characteristics of the ice volume. With the onset of melt conditions, visible and near-infrared sea-ice albedo decreased due to physical changes within the snow and ice volumes. Visible albedo was found to be sensitive to changes occurring throughout the sea-ice volume, while the near-infrared albedo appeared most influenced by near-surface conditions.

One of the most conspicuous phenomena in the Arctic Is the fracture of sea ice. It is scarcely possible to travel far without seeing a variety of fracture forms, produced both by natural processes and by human activity.

At strain-rates below about 10−4 s−1, deformation is dominated by creep, but at higher strain-rates fracture is much more important. One of the reasons for this is the very low fracture toughness of ice. The movements of ice in contact with offshore structures often induce strain-rates well beyond the level at which fracture begins, and so offshore structures will often operate in the fracture regime, and it is fracture processes which will determine the design loads. We consider the different modes of repeated fracture that will occur, and classify them into distinct mechanisms of crushing, spalling, and radial and circumferential cracking. Experimental and field observations are plotted on a deformation mode map. A theoretical treatment of radial cracking confirms that very low loads can propagate cracks to long distances; these loads are small by comparison with those calculated from theoretical models that treat ice as a plastically-deforming continuum.

A continuum dynamical hydraulic model for the flow of a finite mass of cohesionless shallow granular material down an inclined plane was proposed by Savage and Hutter (SH) in 1989. This model consists of depth-averaged equations for the time and space evolution of the velocity profile and the avalanche depth. Their model was generalized to incorporate more complicated topography in which the coordinate lines in the downhill direction are curved but not twisted. We present recently developed model equations by Pudasaini and Hutter for free-surface geophysical gravity-driven flows (e.g. avalanches, debris and pyroclastic flows) down complicated realistic mountain terrain generated by arbitrary space curves with slowly varying curvature and torsion. These are very important extensions to the successful SH theory, which incorporate curvature and torsion effects of the sliding surface. Shock-capturing numerical schemes are used to integrate the hyperbolic conservation system of equations. The physical significance of the numerical solutions is discussed.

Using repeat GPS measurements during 2005–16, we calculated and updated two-dimensional high-resolution decadal ice surface velocity estimates along the traverse route from Zhongshan Station to and around Dome Argus, East Antarctica. Along the 71 sites of the transect, the magnitudes of ice velocity increased from near 0 in Dome Argus to 1, 10 and ~100 m a−1 at the sites DT416, DT333 and LT980, respectively. The comparison between GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) derived results agree well when the magnitude of the ice surface velocities is faster than 5 m a−1, and disagree for slower flow velocities. A scale value 1.15 and 0.12 can be applied to InSAR derived results over this region with ice surface velocity larger and <5 m a−1, respectively. We attributed the cause of the discrepancy to the insensitivity of InSAR to the magnitude of low ice surface velocities, thus confirming the importance of GPS fieldwork-based ground truth high-resolution ice velocity estimates to constrain ice-sheet dynamics.

In glacier-dominated catchments, glaciers have an important effect on the water balance. It is important to understand the glacier control on inflow in order to assess historic trends and future scenarios. The mass balance of a 100 km2 glacier sub-basin of Svartisen ice cap, northern Norway, was reconstructed for 1917 to 1995. The reconstruction was carried out using three different methods, the hydrological method, the correlation between mass balance and meteorological observations and a precipitation-degree-day model. Calibration data were derived from field observations, map comparisons and correlation of observations at different glaciers. The reconstructed series showed a total loss of ∼3 × 109 m3 of water, most of which occurred between 1920 and 1950. After 1950, the net balance increased gradually and is currently near equilibrium with the present climate. Suggested climate scenarios for this region gave a loss between zero and 5 ×109 m3 of water until the year 2050.

A third-order linear glacier length model is used to analyze if the retreat of Hintereisferner in the Austrian Alps over the past 160 years is exceptional, or lies within the range of the natural variability inherent to a stationary climate. A detailed uncertainty analysis takes into account glacier geometry, model parameters and initial conditions. A Monte Carlo ensemble strengthens the result that the observed retreat cannot be explained by natural variability and therefore affirms regional climate change. Finally the observed temperature trend at Hintereisferner lies outside the range of natural variability from an ensemble of climate models, but is consistent with the modeled range of responses to anthropogenic forcing.

Meltwater intrusions of glacial origin complicate the operation of a coalmine situated approximately 200 m below the bed of Gruvefonna ice cap, Svalbard. The magnitude of this water input is expected to increase with the intended enlargement of the mine. The current praxis, evacuation of the water by pumping, is an expensive undertaking and prompts the investigation of alternative solutions. The evaluation of different options requires reliable values of the total volume and the input rate of the water to be drained. To quantify the melt rate at the glacier surface, we applied a distributed temperature-index model. The model parameters were calibrated using mass-balance measurements performed at Gruvefonna during the 2003 ablation season. The water discharge in the mine during the same period was derived from records of the pump rate. Comparing the records of modelled melt and measured discharge reveals an efficient hydraulic connection between the glacier surface and the mine. The total discharge volume in the mine over the 2003 melt season was about 2.8 × 106m3, exceeding significantly the total melt- and rainwater production on the glacier surface directly above the mine (1.2 × 106m3). This implies that the mine discharge receives contributions from a larger surface area. Based on the distribution of hydraulic potential at the glacier bed, we estimate this contributing area. In a number of scenarios, we calculate the amount of meltwater intrusions for several steps of the planned mine enlargement.

The transition of the International Commission on Snow and Ice (ICSI) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) to become the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) within the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is described. IACS was accepted as the eighth Association of IUGG in 2007 and is the first new Association of the Union to be formed in over 80 years. Particular attention is paid to the reasons that prior to 1999 led to the request by the Commission to the Union for a change in status, and to the steps taken during the period 1999–2007 by the ICSI Bureaux and IUGG, that preceded the acquisition of Association status.

Two sea-ice layers, one measured as 9 m thick, the other at least 12 m thick and estimated to be 24.5 m thick, have been located by ice core drilling in the west Ward Hunt Ice Shelf. To examine the preservation of physical-structural characteristics over long time intervals, the crystal structure and brine volumes in the sea ice, which possibly dates back to about 3000 BP, have been studied. The structural characteristics are immediately recognizable as those of undeformed congelation sea ice accreted by Stefan growth. Brine volumes in the ancient sea ice are higher than those in modern multi-year ice at the same temperature. The preservation of brine over a time span of hundreds to thousands of years is attributed to an absence of surface meltwater to effect brine flushing and the very slow, even negligible action of gravity drainage, brine pocket migration and brine expulsion. The congelation structures indicate that sea ice can grow by the Stefan accretion mechanism to thicknesses exceeding the equilibrium thickness (2.5–5 m) of most undeformed multi-year ice. The observed physical-structural characteristics of the Ward Hunt sea ice strongly suggest that many of the properties attained by sea ice are permanent and not affected by slow-acting physical processes.

Reversals in the ice/air surface slope are important in geomorphic and glaciological contexts, thus motivating consideration of the conditions under which they form. Surface slope reversals are seen in numerous places, such as ice rumples on ice shelves, as surficial lakes, and at the down-glacier end of Vostok lake, Antarctica. Such slope reversals can reduce or reverse the subglacial hydrological gradient, thereby rerouting subglacial water transport and possibly leading to the creation of subglacial lakes. Supraglacial lakes produced by slope reversals in ablation zones may aid in driving water-filled cracks that allow surface water access to the bed. Surface slope reversals, in the absence of a concomitant reversal in ice flow, indicate a local violation of the so-called ‘shallow-ice’ approximation, and in this circumstance the longitudinal deviatoric stress becomes critical in the stress equilibrium. Using a simple numerical model, we have explored the conditions under which surface slope reversals form for certain simple scenarios. The results indicate that ice which initially possesses a normal slope will tend toward a reversed slope if the ice is thinned, the bed is strengthened or the downstream buttressing is increased.

A new experimental software for blowing snow, SYTRON2, is presented. It takes advantage of the previous limited realization SYTRON1 and of the entire real-time operational environment of the automatic chain SAFRAN–Crocus–MÉPRA (SCM). It runs presently on a rectangular grid, with a mesh size of about 45 m, covering an area of 3.0 × 3.0km2 around the observation test site Col du Lac Blanc, French Alps (2700m a.s.l., near the Alpe d’Huez ski resort). SYTRON2 is initialized with a realistic snowpack representation derived from the SCM outputs and coupled to a wind field computed by the new SAMVER model. The final aim is to build a fully embedded tool, suitable for representing snowdrift effects with a better resolution at different specific locations. The different tools and operators used are described, as well as the field validation processes which are based on remote identification of the eroded and accumulated areas using digital pictures.

During the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition 1978–79, temperature measurements of a number of icebergs and the surrounding surface water were made, using an airborne precision radiation thermometer. All icebergs were embedded in cold water-masses with temperatures generally below 0°C and thus the observed temperature anomalies were relatively small, ΔT ≈ 1 deg. Examples of the influence of icebergs on the sea surface temperature including a possible example of upwelling will be shown. The temperature of the snow-covered iceberg surface was almost constant with individual variations ΔT ≈ 0.2 deg. Local minima indicative of snow-covered crevasses were observed.
