In her book, The Akan of Ghana (1958), Eva L. Meyerowitz examines some of the religious beliefs and practices of the Akan in an attempt to show that they are of Libyo-Phoenician origin and that Akan civilization is essentially pre-Arab North African in character. As an example of an Akan New Year festival she describes the annual Aboakyer (lit. ‘the catching of an animal’) ritual of the Effutu people of southern Ghana and interprets it in a manner which supports her theory of Akan origins (Meyerowitz, 1958, pp. 38–42). This research note subjects Meyerowitz's treatment of the Aboakyer to critical analysis. It is concerned with her theory of Akan origins only in so far as it results in misinterpretation of the Aboakyer. The note does not provide a full account of the Aboakyer, but a brief outline showing the sequence of ritual events. The field-work upon which it is based was conducted among the Effutu in 1964 and 1965 and included the study of the Aboakyer rituals of these years.

This paper presents a preliminary account of the results of field research among the Teita, a tribal group not previously studied. It aims at giving a survey of the main structural features of the Teita tribal system and of the genealogical groupings within it. I hope to devote a separate article to a study of residential relations as cohesive factors within the tribal structure.

Parmi les vœux adoptés à l'unanimité et sans discussion par le Deuxième Congres de toponymie et d'anthroponymie, tenu à Paris du 15 au 17 juillet 1947, il en est un auquel il faut donner la plus large diffusion: ‘Le Congrés . . 'met le vceu que les noms propres de lieux retenus pour les cartes d'Afrique Occidentale Française et d'Afrique Équatoriale soient ceux qu'emploient les Indigènes habitant les lieux, dans leur propre langue, et non les vocables utilisés par les populations voisines, qu'elles emploient ou non une langue vehiculaire . . .’ Ce vœu doit être complété par cet autre qui ne concerne plus les toponymes mais les noms ethniques: que pour désigner une ethnie on n'emploie que le vocable utilisé dans la langue de ce peuple pour se désigner lui-même, à l'exclusion des vocables utilisés par les populations voisines, qu'elles emploient ou non une langue véhiculaire. Salomon Reinach disait que les noms ethniques étaient la peste de l'anthropologie, cette affirmation reste vraie pour l'ethnologie.

A Young man and a young woman of the same village or of divisions of the same village look and look at each other with shy glances. The young man is in love with the girl and the girl is in love with the young man. One day the young man will speak to the other young men in the onjango and say, Fellows, Ngandi's little daughter hurts me. Now then if I had said, After a few days I shall send you to propose a trial marriage to her, would it have been all right? Then the others will say, Yeah, old man, maybe you are talking nonsense; we thought that there was something between you, as you avoid each other; there is no hindrance, it is all right in that quarter, old fellow.

Situation générale du Problème

L'exemple des Oubi que nous avons choisi pour la présente étude n'est que l'illustration d'un problème plus général qui décidera du proche avenir des économies traditionnelles dans les forêts de l'ouest éburnéen.

En accueillant la culture des plantes industrielles: caféier et cacaoyer, comme une forme nouvelle de leurs activités, les petites unités ethniques de cette zone—jusqu'ici matériellement autonomes—doivent faire appel à toutes leurs ressources morales, afin que leur intégration dans un système économique plus vaste, se réalise sans trop de dommages. Les marchés mondiaux du café et du cacao n'étant pas pour l'instant en cause, le problème immédiat reste en général circonscrit dans le cadre de l'Union Française, plus précisément dans des relations Côte d'Ivoire-métropole.

In the French Cameroons, West Africa, live the Bamum whose population is estimated at about 75,000. Their territory is bounded on the north by that of the British Trusteeship territory of the Cameroons. Their western and south-western boundaries are formed by the River Nun, while the Rivers Mape (a tributary of the Mbam) and the Mbam form its eastern boundaries. The tribe consists of a recent ruling group of Tikar who, migrating from Rifum—now called Bamkin—settled among other Tikar whose social and political organization was of the lineage type so common in West Africa. This ruling group, who claim to have come originally from the environs of Bornu, rapidly conquered the surrounding independent, uncentralized, local villages and created the powerful Bamum kingdom which withstood Fulani raids.
