The purpose of this paper is to study ageing properties of first-passage times of increasing Markov chains. We extend the literature to some new ageing classes, such as the IFR(2), NBU(2), DRLLt and NBULt classes. We also give sufficient conditions in the finite case, that are more efficient computationally, just in terms of the transition matrix K, in the discrete case, or the generator matrix Q, in the continuous case. For the uniformizable, continuous-time Markov processes, we derive conditions in terms of the discrete uniformized Markov chain for the NBU(2) and the NBULt classes. In the last section, a review of the main results in this direction in the literature is given, and we compare some of the conditions stated in this paper with others given in the literature about some other ageing classes. Some examples where these results are applied are given.

We consider de Finetti’s problem for spectrally one-sided Lévy risk models with control strategies that are absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Furthermore, we consider the version with a constraint on the time of ruin. To characterize the solution to the aforementioned models, we first solve the optimal dividend problem with a terminal value at ruin and show the optimality of threshold strategies. Next, we introduce the dual Lagrangian problem and show that the complementary slackness conditions are satisfied, characterizing the optimal Lagrange multiplier. Finally, we illustrate our findings with a series of numerical examples.

We consider a model in which players must divide a fixed amount of resource between a number of trials of an underlying contest, with the underlying contest based on the War of Attrition. We are able to find the unique ES set (a simple generalisation of the idea of an evolutionarily stable strategy) in certain circumstances: in particular we find the conditions under which the ES set may contain a pure strategy.

Many regenerative arguments in stochastic processes use random times which are akin to stopping times, but which are determined by the future as well as the past behaviour of the process of interest. Such arguments based on ‘conditioning on the future’ are usually developed in an ad-hoc way in the context of the application under consideration, thereby obscuring the underlying structure. In this paper we give a simple, unified, and more general treatment of such conditioning theory. We further give a number of novel applications to various particle system models, in particular to various flavours of contact processes and to infinite-bin models. We give a number of new results for existing and new models. We further make connections with the theory of Harris ergodicity.

Recently, systematic sampling on the circle and the sphere has been studied by Gual-Arnau and Cruz-Orive (2000) from a design-based point of view. In this note, it is shown that their mathematical model for the covariogram is, in a model-based statistical setting, a special case of the p-order shape model suggested by Hobolth, Pedersen and Jensen (2000) and Hobolth, Kent and Dryden (2002) for planar objects without landmarks. Benefits of this observation include an alternative variance estimator, applicable in the original problem of systematic sampling. In a wider perspective, the paper contributes to the discussion concerning design-based versus model-based stereology.

Guided by analogy with Euler's spherical excess formula, we define a finite-additive functional on bounded convex polygons in ℝ2 (the Euler functional). Under certain smoothness assumptions, we find some sufficient conditions when this functional can be extended to a planar signed measure. A dual reformulation of these conditions leads to signed measures in the space of lines in ℝ2. In this way we obtain two sets of conditions which ensure that a segment function corresponds to a signed measure in the space of lines. The latter conditions are also necessary.

In this paper we introduce and solve a generalization of the classic average cost Brownian control problem in which a system manager dynamically controls the drift rate of a diffusion process X. At each instant, the system manager chooses the drift rate from a pair {u, v} of available rates and can invoke instantaneous controls either to keep X from falling or to keep it from rising. The objective is to minimize the long-run average cost consisting of holding or delay costs, processing costs, costs for invoking instantaneous controls, and fixed costs for changing the drift rate. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the cost parameters to ensure the problem admits a finite optimal solution. When it does, a simple control band policy specifying economic buffer sizes (α, Ω) and up to two switching points is optimal. The controller should invoke instantaneous controls to keep X in the interval (α, Ω). A policy with no switching points relies on a single drift rate exclusively. When there is no cost to change the drift rate, a policy with a single switching point s indicates that the controller should change to the slower drift rate when X exceeds s and use the faster drift rate otherwise. When there is a cost to change the drift rate, a policy with two switching points s < S indicates that the controller should maintain the faster drift rate until X exceeds S and maintain the slower drift rate until X falls below s.

In this paper we give a simple proof of a limit theorem for the length of the largest interval straddling a fixed number of points that are independent and uniformly distributed on a unit interval. The key step in our argument is a classical theorem of Watson on the maxima of m-dependent stationary stochastic sequences.

Let X1, X2,… be real-valued random variables. For u>0, define the time of ruin T = T(u) by T = inf{n: X1+⋯+Xn>u} or T=∞ if X1+⋯+Xn≤u for every n = 1,2,…. We are interested in the ruin probabilities of general processes {Xn} for large u. In the presence of heavy tails, one often finds power estimates. Our objective is to specify the associated powers and provide the crude estimate P(T≤xu)≈u−R(x) for large u, for a given x∈ℝ. The rate R(x) will be described by means of tails of partial sums and maxima of {Xn}. We also extend our results to the case of the infinite time horizon.

Consider randomly scattered radio transceivers in ℝd, each of which can transmit signals to all transceivers in a given randomly chosen region about itself. If a signal is retransmitted by every transceiver that receives it, under what circumstances will a signal propagate to a large distance from its starting point? Put more formally, place points {xi} in ℝd according to a Poisson process with intensity 1. Then, independently for each xi, choose a bounded region Axi from some fixed distribution and let be the random directed graph with vertex set whenever xj ∈ xi + Axi. We show that, for any will almost surely have an infinite directed path, provided the expected number of transceivers that can receive a signal directly from xi is at least 1 + η, and the regions xi + Axi do not overlap too much (in a sense that we shall make precise). One example where these conditions hold, and so gives rise to percolation, is in ℝd, with each Axi a ball of volume 1 + η centred at xi, where η → 0 as d → ∞. Another example is in two dimensions, where the Axi are sectors of angle ε γ and area 1 + η, uniformly randomly oriented within a fixed angle (1 + ε)θ. In this case we can let η → 0 as ε → 0 and still obtain percolation. The result is already known for the annulus, i.e. that the critical area tends to 1 as the ratio of the radii tends to 1, while it is known to be false for the square (l∞) annulus. Our results show that it does however hold for the randomly oriented square annulus.

We consider a new embedded Markov chain for the PH/G/1 queue by recording the queue length, the phase of the arrival process and the number of services completed during the current busy period at the successive departure epochs. Algorithmically tractable matrix formulas are obtained which permit the analysis of the fluctuations of the queue length and waiting times during a typical busy cycle. These are useful in the computation of certain profile curves arising in the statistical analysis of queues. In addition, informative expressions for the mean waiting times in the stable GI/G/1 queue and a simple new algorithm to evaluate the waiting-time distributions for the stationary PH/PH/1 queue are obtained.

Within an anticipative stochastic calculus framework, we study a market game with asymmetric information and feedback effects. We derive necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of Nash equilibria and study how general welfare is affected by the level of information. In particular, we show that, under certain conditions in a competitive environment, an increased level of information may in fact lower the level of general welfare, leading to the so-called Hirshleifer effect (see Hirshleifer (1971)). Finally, we determine equilibrium prices for particular pieces of information, by extending our market game with a pre-stage, in which information is traded.

This paper studies the GI/G/1 queueing system in which no customer can stay longer than a fixed interval D. This is also a model for the dam with finite capacity, instantaneous water supply and constant release rule. Using analytical method together with the property that the queueing process ‘starts anew’ probabilistically whenever an arriving customer initiates a busy period, we obtain various transient and stationary results for the system.

Management of a bufferless resource is considered under non-homogeneous demand consisting of one-unit and two-unit requests. Two-unit requests can be served only by a given partition of the resource. Three simple admission policies are evaluated with regard to revenue generation. One policy involves no admission control and two policies involve trunk reservation. A limiting regime in which demand and capacity increase in proportion is considered. It is shown that each policy is asymptotically optimal for a certain range of parameters. Limiting dynamical behavior is obtained via a theory developed by Hunt and Kurtz. The results also point out the remarkable effect of partition constraints.

We study the ruin probability where the claim sizes are modeled by a stationary ergodic symmetric α-stable process. We exploit the flow representation of such processes, and we consider the processes generated by conservative flows. We focus on two classes of conservative α-stable processes (one discrete-time and one continuous-time), and give results for the order of magnitude of the ruin probability as the initial capital goes to infinity. We also prove a solidarity property for null-recurrent Markov chains as an auxiliary result, which might be of independent interest.

We continue the study of the asymptotic behaviour of a random walk when it exits from a symmetric region of the form {(x, n): |x| ≤ rnb} as r → ∞ which was begun in Part I of this work. In contrast to that paper, we are interested in the case where the probability of exiting at the upper boundary tends to 1. In this scenario we treat the case where the power b lies in the interval [0, 1), and we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the overshoot to be relatively stable in probability (except for the case ), and for the pth moment of the overshoot to be O(rq) as r → ∞.

This paper deals with the thrown string problem posed by Synge [12]. The models studied are those of Willenborg [14] and Kingman [7]. The convergence results obtained are complementary to those of Kingman, although they are derived by quite different methods involving the use of martingales.

The ‘scanning process' Z(t), t ∈ ℝk of the title is a Gaussian random field obtained by associating with Z(t) the value of a set-indexed Brownian motion on the translate t + A0 of some ‘scanning set' A0. We study the basic properties of the random field Z relating, for example, its continuity and other sample path properties to the geometrical properties of A0. We ask if the set A0 determines the scanning process, and investigate when, and how, it is possible to recover the structure of A0 from realisations of the sample paths of the random field Z.

The hyperbolic random geometric graph was introduced by Krioukov et al. (Phys. Rev. E82, 2010). Among many equivalent models for the hyperbolic space, we study the d-dimensional Poincaré ball ( $d\ge 2$ ), with a general connectivity radius. While many phase transitions are known for the expectation asymptotics of certain subgraph counts, very little is known about the second-order results. Two of the distinguishing characteristics of geometric graphs on the hyperbolic space are the presence of tree-like hierarchical structures and the power-law behaviour of the degree distribution. We aim to reveal such characteristics in detail by investigating the behaviour of sub-tree counts. We show multiple phase transitions for expectation and variance in the resulting hyperbolic geometric graph. In particular, the expectation and variance of the sub-tree counts exhibit an intricate dependence on the degree sequence of the tree under consideration. Additionally, unlike the thermodynamic regime of the Euclidean random geometric graph, the expectation and variance may exhibit different growth rates, which is indicative of power-law behaviour. Finally, we also prove a normal approximation for sub-tree counts using the Malliavin–Stein method of Last et al. (Prob. Theory Relat. Fields165, 2016), along with the Palm calculus for Poisson point processes.
