In this paper, we study the following Kirchhoff-type equation: where a, b are positive constants and N = 1, 2, 3. Under appropriate assumptions on V, K and g, we obtain a ground-state solution by using the approach developed by Szulkin and Weth in 2010.

A finite difference method which is second-order accurate in time and in space is proposed for two-dimensional fractional percolation equations. Using the Fourier transform, a general approximation for the mixed fractional derivatives is analyzed. An approach based on the classical Crank-Nicolson scheme combined with the Richardson extrapolation is used to obtain temporally and spatially second-order accurate numerical estimates. Consistency, stability and convergence of the method are established. Numerical experiments illustrating the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis are provided.

Left-invariant PDE-evolutions on the roto-translation group SE(2)(and their resolvent equations) have been widely studied in the fields of cortical modeling and image analysis. They include hypo-elliptic diffusion (for contour enhancement) proposed by Citti & Sarti, and Petitot, and they include the direction process (for contour completion) proposed by Mumford. This paper presents a thorough study and comparison of the many numerical approaches, which, remarkably, are missing in the literature. Existing numerical approaches can be classified into 3 categories: Finite difference methods, Fourier based methods (equivalent to SE(2)-Fourier methods), and stochastic methods (Monte Carlo simulations). There are also 3 types of exact solutions to the PDE-evolutions that were derived explicitly (in the spatial Fourier domain) in previous works by Duits and van Almsick in 2005. Here we provide an overview of these 3 types of exact solutions and explain how they relate to each of the 3 numerical approaches. We compute relative errors of all numerical approaches to the exact solutions, and the Fourier based methods show us the best performance with smallest relative errors. We also provide an improvement of Mathematica algorithms for evaluating Mathieu-functions, crucial in implementations of the exact solutions. Furthermore, we include an asymptotical analysis of the singularities within the kernels and we propose a probabilistic extension of underlying stochastic processes that overcomes the singular behavior in the origin of time-integrated kernels. Finally, we show retinal imaging applications of combining left-invariant PDE-evolutions with invertible orientation scores.

In this paper, the (G'/G)-expansion method is suggested to establish new exact solutions for fractional differential-difference equations in the sense of modified Riemann-Liouville derivative. The fractional complex transform is proposed to convert a fractional partial differential difference equation into its differential difference equation of integer order. With the aid of symbolic computation, we choose nonlinear lattice equations to illustrate the validity and advantages of the algorithm. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is effective and can be used for many other nonlinear lattice equations in mathematical physics and applied mathematics.

This paper concerns the quenching phenomena of a reaction–diffusion equation $u_{t}=u_{xx}+1/(1-u)$ in a one dimensional varying domain $[g(t),h(t)]$, where $g(t)$ and $h(t)$ are two free boundaries evolving by a Stefan condition. We prove that all solutions will quench regardless of the choice of initial data, and we also show that the quenching set is a compact subset of the initial occupying domain and that the two free boundaries remain bounded.

We prove uniqueness for the Calderón problem with Lipschitz conductivities in higher dimensions. Combined with the recent work of Haberman, who treated the three- and four-dimensional cases, this confirms a conjecture of Uhlmann. Our proof builds on the work of Sylvester and Uhlmann, Brown, and Haberman and Tataru who proved uniqueness for $C^{1}$ -conductivities and Lipschitz conductivities sufficiently close to the identity.

We consider an elliptic self-adjoint first-order differential operator $L$ acting on pairs (2-columns) of complex-valued half-densities over a connected compact three-dimensional manifold without boundary. The principal symbol of the operator $L$ is assumed to be trace-free and the subprincipal symbol is assumed to be zero. Given a positive scalar weight function, we study the weighted eigenvalue problem for the operator $L$ . The corresponding counting function (number of eigenvalues between zero and a positive $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ ) is known to admit, under appropriate assumptions on periodic trajectories, a two-term asymptotic expansion as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}\rightarrow +\infty$ and we have recently derived an explicit formula for the second asymptotic coefficient. The purpose of this paper is to establish the geometric meaning of the second asymptotic coefficient. To this end, we identify the geometric objects encoded within our eigenvalue problem—metric, non-vanishing spinor field and topological charge—and express our asymptotic coefficients in terms of these geometric objects. We prove that the second asymptotic coefficient of the counting function has the geometric meaning of the massless Dirac action.

We investigate the interplay between the local and asymptotic geometry of a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ and the geometry of model sets ${\mathcal{S}}\subset {\mathcal{P}}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, which approximate $A$ locally uniformly on small scales. The framework for local set approximation developed in this paper unifies and extends ideas of Jones, Mattila and Vuorinen, Reifenberg, and Preiss. We indicate several applications of this framework to variational problems that arise in geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. For instance, we show that the singular part of the support of an $(n-1)$-dimensional asymptotically optimally doubling measure in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ ($n\geqslant 4$) has upper Minkowski dimension at most $n-4$.

We introduce an approach to study certain singular partial differential equations (PDEs) which is based on techniques from paradifferential calculus and on ideas from the theory of controlled rough paths. We illustrate its applicability on some model problems such as differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion, a fractional Burgers-type stochastic PDE (SPDE) driven by space-time white noise, and a nonlinear version of the parabolic Anderson model with a white noise potential.

We investigate the decay for |x|→∞ of weak Sobolev-type solutions of semilinear nonlocal equations Pu = F(u). We consider the case when P = p(D) is an elliptic Fourier multiplier with polyhomogeneous symbol p(ξ), and we derive algebraic decay estimates in terms of weighted Sobolev norms. Our basic example is the celebrated Benjamin–Ono equation

for internal solitary waves of deep stratified fluids. Their profile presents algebraic decay, in strong contrast with the exponential decay for KdV shallow water waves.

In this paper we construct some Feller semigroups, hence Feller processes, with state space $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{Z}^{m}$ starting with pseudo-differential operators having symbols defined on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{Z}^{m}\times \mathbb{T}^{m}$.

Asymptotic analysis of the Hele-Shaw flow with a small moving obstacle is performed. The method of solution utilizes the uniform asymptotic formulas for Green’s and Neumann functions recently obtained by V. Maz’ya and A. Movchan. The theoretical results of the paper are illustrated by numerical simulations.

We study the Bayesian disorder problem for a negative binomial process. The aim is to determine a stopping time which is as close as possible to the random and unknown moment at which a sequentially observed negative binomial process changes the value of its characterizing parameter p ∈ (0, 1). The solution to this problem is explicitly derived through the reduction of the original optimal stopping problem to an integro-differential free-boundary problem. A careful analysis of the free-boundary equation and of the probabilistic nature of the boundary point allows us to specify when the smooth fit principle holds and when it breaks down in favour of the continuous fit principle.

We prove continuity in generalized parabolic Morrey spaces of sublinear operators generated by the parabolic Calderón—Zygmund operator and by the commutator of this operator with bounded mean oscillation (BMO) functions. As a consequence, we obtain a global -regularity result for the Cauchy—Dirichlet problem for linear uniformly parabolic equations with vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) coefficients.

Onwards from the mid-twentieth century, the stochastic filtering problem has caught the attention of thousands of mathematicians, engineers, statisticians, and computer scientists. Its applications span the whole spectrum of human endeavour, including satellite tracking, credit risk estimation, human genome analysis, and speech recognition. Stochastic filtering has engendered a surprising number of mathematical techniques for its treatment and has played an important role in the development of new research areas, including stochastic partial differential equations, stochastic geometry, rough paths theory, and Malliavin calculus. It also spearheaded research in areas of classical mathematics, such as Lie algebras, control theory, and information theory. The aim of this paper is to give a brief historical account of the subject concentrating on the continuous-time framework.

Motivated by a class of nonlinear nonlocal equations of interest for string theory, we introduce Sobolev spaces on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups and we examine some of their properties. Specifically, we focus on analogs of the Sobolev embedding and Rellich–Kondrachov compactness theorems. As an application, we prove the existence of continuous solutions to a generalized bosonic string equation posed on an arbitrary compact abelian group, and we also remark that our approach allows us to solve very general linear equations in a $p$-adic context.

We study the existence of solutions for a class of abstract impulsive differential equations. Our technical framework allows us to study partial differential equations with impulsive conditions involving partial derivatives and nonlinear expressions of the solution. Some applications to impulsive partial differential equations are presented.

We prove a new global stability estimate for the Gel’fand–Calderón inverse problem on a two-dimensional bounded domain. Specifically, the inverse boundary value problem for the equation ${- }\Delta \psi + v\hspace{0.167em} \psi = 0$ on $D$ is analysed, where $v$ is a smooth real-valued potential of conductivity type defined on a bounded planar domain $D$. The main feature of this estimate is that it shows that the smoother a potential is, the more stable its reconstruction is. Furthermore, the stability is proven to depend exponentially on the smoothness, in a sense to be made precise. The same techniques yield a similar estimate for the Calderón problem for electrical impedance tomography.
