Fluorbritholite-(Nd), ideally Ca2Nd3(SiO4)3F, has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA2023–001) and constitutes a new member of the britholite group of the apatite supergroup. It occurs in skarn from the Malmkärra iron mine, Norberg, Västmanland (one of the Bastnäs-type deposits in Sweden), associated with calcite, dolomite, magnetite, lizardite, talc, fluorite, baryte, scheelite, gadolinite-(Nd) and other REE minerals. Fluorbritholite-(Nd) forms anhedral and small grains, rarely up to 250 μm across. They are brownish pink and transparent with a vitreous to greasy lustre. The mineral is brittle, with an uneven or subconchoidal fracture and lacks a cleavage. In thin section, the mineral is nonpleochroic, uniaxial (–). Dcalc = 4.92(1) g⋅cm−3 and ncalc = 1.795. The empirical chemical formula from electron microprobe (WDS) point analyses is (Ca1.62Nd0.97Ce0.83Y0.52Sm0.30Gd0.23Pr0.17La0.16Dy0.11Er0.03Tb0.03Ho0.01Yb0.01)Σ4.99(Si2.92P0.08As0.01)Σ3.01O12.00[O0.48F0.26(OH)0.14Cl0.10Br0.02]Σ1.00. The crystal structure of fluorbritholite-(Nd) was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to R1= 0.043 for 704 unique reflections. It belongs to the hexagonal system, space group P63/m, with unit cell parameters a = 9.5994(3), c = 6.9892(4) Å and V = 557.76(5) Å3 for Z = 2. Fluorbritholite-(Nd) and other britholite-group minerals are a major sink for neodymium in REE-bearing skarns of Bastnäs type.

The Wombat Hole Prospect is a small copper–bismuth–(tellurium) exoskarn cropping out in the Morass Creek gorge, near Benambra, in eastern Victoria, Australia. Its main primary sulfide constituent is bornite in a grossular‒vesuvianite matrix. The skarn formed in a megaclast of Lower Silurian limestone from metal-bearing fluids accompanying the high-level emplacement of the Late Silurian–Lower Devonian Silver Flat Porphyry. Though the primary bornite mineralisation has been nearly obliterated by weathering, there are small relict patches containing exsolved grains of wittichenite (Cu3BiS3) and chalcopyrite, as well as inclusions of bismuth tellurides in the tetradymite group, namely sulphotsumoite (Bi3Te2S) and hedleyite (Bi7Te3). Joséite-A (Bi4TeS2), a mineral with a formula Bi3(Te,S)4, several unnamed Cu–Bi‒Te phases and minute grains of native bismuth have also been detected. Pervasive veining by chrysocolla throughout the garnet‒vesuvianite host contains a range of unusual secondary bismuth minerals that have crystallised at various times. These include mrázekite, namibite, pucherite, schumacherite and eulytine. Other secondary minerals present include wulfenite, bismutite, azurite, malachite and a poorly-crystalline bismuth oxide containing several weight percent tellurium. Rare grains of gold (electrum) containing up to 23 wt.% Ag are also present. The assemblage of grossular–vesuvianite with minor diopside is indicative of formation in a low-${\rm X}_{{\rm C}{\rm O}_ 2}$ environment under fluid-buffered conditions. A temperature range between ~650°C and as low as ~150°C can be estimated from the exsolution of wittichenite and chalcopyrite from the bornite. The tetradymite-group inclusions formed first under low values of $f_{{\rm S}_ 2}$ /$f_{{\rm T}{\rm e}_ 2}$, with bornite crystallising as values increased. The primary Cu‒Bi‒Te mineralogy and the unusual secondary mineral assemblage makes the Wombat Hole skarn unique in southeastern Australia. The deposit provides scope for studying the mobility of elements such as Bi and Te over short distances during weathering of hypogene ore minerals.

Garpenbergite is a new mineral (IMA2020-099) from the Garpenberg Norra mine, Hedemora, Dalarna, Sweden. It occurs with carlfrancisite and minor stibarsen, paradocrasite and filipstadite in a fractured skarn matrix of granular jacobsite, alleghanyite, kutnohorite and dolomite. Crystals are short-prismatic, up to 1.5 mm in length. They have a blackish to greyish brown colour, and are lustrous semi-opaque, with brown streak. Garpenbergite is brittle, with an uneven to subconchoidal fracture. Cleavage is distinct on {010}. Hardness ≈ 5 (Mohs) and VHN100 = 650(40). Dcalc = 4.47(1) g⋅cm−3, overall ncalc = 1.85. Maximum specular reflectance values (%) obtained are 9.2 (470 nm), 9.1 (546 nm), 9.0 (589 nm) and 8.9 (650 nm). The empirical chemical formula of garpenbergite, based on electron microprobe data, is (Mn2+3.97Mg1.48Mn3+0.26Zn0.29)Σ6.00(As0.89Fe3+0.04Mn3+0.06Si0.01)Σ1.00(Sb0.98Fe0.02)Σ1O10[(OH)1.99Cl0.01]Σ2.00. The five strongest Bragg peaks in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are 3.05 (30) (002), 2.665 (100) (161), 2.616 (40) (301), 2.586 (25) (251) and 1.545 (45) (462). The orthorhombic unit-cell dimensions (in Å) are a = 8.6790(9), b = 18.9057(19) and c = 6.1066(6), with V = 1001.99(18) Å3 for Z = 4. The crystal structure was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data in the space-group Ibmm to R1 = 3.7% for 957 reflections. Garpenbergite, ideally Mn6As5+Sb5+O10(OH)2, is isostructural with manganostibite, Mn7AsSbO12, but possesses a cation vacancy (□) at an octahedrally coordinated structural site; the two minerals are thus related by the exchange Mn2+ + 2O2– → □ + 2(OH)–. The presence of hydroxyl groups is supported by vibration bands at 3647 and 3622 cm−1 in the Raman spectrum of garpenbergite and by bond-valence considerations.

The margarosanite group (now officially confirmed by IMA-CNMNC) consists of triclinic Ca-(Ba, Pb) cyclosilicates with three-membered [Si3O9]6– rings (3R), with the general formula AB2Si3O9, where A = Pb, Ba and Ca and B = Ca. A closest-packed arrangement of O atoms parallel to (101) hosts Si and B cations in interstitial sites in alternating layers. The 3R layer has three independent Si sites in each ring. Divalent cations occupy three independent sites: Ca in B occupies two nonequivalent sites, Ca1 (8-fold coordinated), and Ca2 (6-fold coordinated). A (=Ca3) is occupied by Pb2+ (or Ba2+) in 6+4 coordination, or 6+1 when occupied by Ca; this third site occurs within the 3R-layer in a peripheral position. Three minerals belong to this group: margarosanite (ideally PbCa2Si3O9), walstromite (BaCa2Si3O9) and breyite (CaCa2Si3O9). So far, no solid solutions involving the Ca1 and Ca2 sites have been described. Therefore, root names depend on the composition of the Ca3 site only. Isomorphic replacement at the Ca3 sites has been noted. We here report data on a skarn sample from the Jakobsberg Mn–Fe oxide deposit, in Värmland, Sweden, representing intermediate compositions on the walstromite–margarosanite binary, in the range ca. 50–70% mol.% BaCa2Si3O9. The Pb-rich walstromite is associated closely with celsian, phlogopite, andradite, vesuvianite, diopside and nasonite. A crystal-structure refinement (R1 = 4.8%) confirmed the structure type, and showed that the Ca3 (Ba, Pb) site is split into two positions separated by 0.39 Å, with the Ba atoms found slightly more peripheral to the 3R-layers.

Langhofite, ideally Pb2(OH)[WO4(OH)], is a new mineral from the Långban mine, Värmland, Sweden. The mineral and its name were approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA2019-005). It occurs in a small vug in hematite–pyroxene skarn associated with calcite, baryte, fluorapatite, mimetite and minor sulfide minerals. Langhofite is triclinic, space group P$\bar{1}$, and unit-cell parameters a = 6.6154(1) Å, b = 7.0766(1) Å, c = 7.3296(1) Å, α = 118.175(2)°, β = 94.451(1)°, γ = 101.146(1)° and V = 291.06(1) Å3 for Z = 2. The seven strongest Bragg peaks from powder X-ray diffractometry are [dobs, Å (I)(hkl)]: 6.04(24)(010), 3.26(22)(11$\bar{2}$), 3.181(19)(200), 3.079(24)(1$\bar{1}$2), 3.016(100)(020), 2.054(20)(3$\bar{1}$1) and 2.050(18)(13$\bar{2}$). Langhofite occurs as euhedral crystals up to 4 mm, elongated along the a axis, with lengthwise striation. Mohs hardness is ca. 2½, based on VHN25 data obtained in the range 130–192. The mineral is brittle, with perfect {010} and {100} cleavages. The calculated density based on the ideal formula is 7.95(1) g⋅cm–3. Langhofite is colourless to white (non-pleochroic) and transparent, with a white streak and adamantine lustre. Reflectance curves show normal dispersion, with maximum values 15.7–13.4% within 400–700 nm. Electron microprobe analyses yield only the metals Pb and W above the detection level. The presence of OH-groups is demonstrated with vibration spectroscopy, from band maxima present at ~3470 and 3330 cm–1. A distinct Raman peak at ca. 862 cm–1 is related to symmetric W–oxygen stretching vibrations. The crystal structure is novel and was refined to R = 1.6%. It contains [W2O8(OH)2]6– edge-sharing dimers (with highly distorted WO6-octahedra) forming chains along [101] with [(OH)2Pb4]6+ dimers formed by (OH)Pb3 triangles. Chains configure (010) layers linked along [010] by long and weak Pb–O bonds, thus explaining the observed perfect cleavage on {010}. The mineral is named for curator Jörgen Langhof (b. 1965), who collected the discovery sample.

Cobaltite-rich mineralization from the iron skarns of the Traversella magnetite mine (Western Alps, Italy) was studied by reflected-light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. Cobaltite is found in carbonate-chlorite-rich rocks at the margins of the main magnetite masses, where it forms disseminations and metasomatic veinlets that postdate the formation of magnetite. The paragenesis includes cobaltite (± arsenopyrite), bismuthinite, pyrrhotite and/or pyrite, chalcopyrite, carbonates, talc, chlorite and native gold, and is indicative of a low-sulfidation environment. The sulfarsenides show oscillatory and sector zoning, which indicates disequilibrium during crystal growth. Compositional variations are mainly due to variations in the Co/Fe ratio of arsenopyrite and in either the Co/Fe or the Ni/(Fe + Co) ratios of the coexisting cobaltite. The Ni contents are low to very low in the cobaltites (<2.4 wt.%) and very low in the arsenopyrites (<0.16 wt.%). The As/S molar ratios in the cobaltites are highly variable (0.59−1.00) and show a broad negative correlation with the Fe contents. The formation of cobaltite is related to circulation of relatively low-temperature (<∼300°C), (Co,As,Bi)-rich fluids during the retrograde sulfidation stage which followed the formation of magnetite. The apparent restriction of cobaltite (+ bismuthinite ± arsenopyrite) to the margins of the main magnetite columns may reflect the establishment of thermochemical gradients around the main direction of infiltration of the retrograde metasomatic fluids.

We report preliminary petrographic and mineral chemical data for a rock hosting an unusual mineral assemblage from Långban, Värmland, Sweden. The rock is a two feldspar-scapolite-spessartine-romeite skarn. The bulk composition and high degree of enrichment in Pb, Sb and As suggest that the rock was formed by reaction between a pre-existing Mn skarn containing the chalcophiles and a potassic granite, with loss of silica, alkalis and CO2. The alkali feldspar is a Pb-rich hyalophane, averaging Or63Ab19Cs15Pb03, the plagioclase feldspar a Pb-rich labradorite, An48Ab48Or02Pb02, and the scapolite a 'mizzonite' (Ca/(Na+Ca) = 0.66—0.70). These minerals show their highest Pb contents recorded in nature to date: up to a maximum of 5.7 wt.% PbO in the hyalophane, 2.1% PbO in the plagioclase, and 5.3% PbO in the scapolite. Laser ablation ICP-MS of a scapolite grain detected substantial Be up to 1.7 wt.% BeO (0.6 Be per 12 tetrahedral cations), as well as Pb up to 7.05 wt.% PbO. The Be is incorporated into scapolite via the coupled exchange [Be(OH)][Al(CO3,SO4)]—1. This is the first documentation of scapolite as the major repository for Be in a rock.

The romeite also contains substantial Pb, and shows extensive solid solution towards end-members containing Fe3+, Ti and Sb3+. In some analyses, the dominant end-members are and its Pb analogue rather than (Ca,Pb)2Sb2O7. Complex exsolution textures are displayed in the hyalophane, by hancockite-epidote, romeite-bindheimite and hedyphane-johnbaumite. Ca-rich scapolite and hancockite appear to be new minerals for the Långban deposit.

The mineralogy appears consistent with the regional peak conditions of P = 3 kbar, T > 600°C. Several potential thermobarometers for Mn-rich skarns are identified in this rock.

In addition to spurrite, Ca5(SiO4)2(CO3), and tilleyite, Ca5(Si2O7)(CO3)2, galuskinite, C is the third mineral in the CaO—SiO2—CO2 ternary system. Galuskinite, monoclinic, space group P21/c (a = 18.79, b = 6.72, c = 10.47 Å, β = 90.79°, V = 1322 Å3, Z = 4), occurs in thin veins which cut calcio-olivine, γ-Ca2SiO4, skarn with larnite, β-Ca2SiO4, relics. Pavlovskyite, Ca8(SiO4)2(Si3O10), and dellaite, Ca6(Si2O7)(SiO4)(OH)2, form a margin between the veins and the calcio-olivine skarn. The sanidinite facies high-temperature skarn formed ∼500 Ma ago when gabbroid rocks of the Birkhin complex (Baikal area, Eastern Siberia, Russia) intruded and contact-metamorphosed limestone xenoliths. Galuskinite is a retrograde product of skarn alteration and has neither been described from cement clinker production processes nor from studies of the CaO—SiO2—CO2 system. The crystal structure of galuskinite, refined from single crystal X-ray data to Ri = 3.1%, has a modular character. One may define a polysomatic series with spurrite and larnite as endmembers and galuskinite as a 1:1 polysome built from regular alternating spurrite and larnite modules. Differences between the X-ray powder patterns of galuskinite and spurrite are most obvious in the low 8 region. Galuskinite is named after the Russian mineralogists Irina O. Galuskina and Evgeny V. Galuskin, Faculty of Earth Sciences. University of Silesia, Poland, for their outstanding contributions to skarn mineralogy.

A study of mine dump material from Koberg, Bergslagen, Sweden has revealed a varied mineral assemblage, including Zr-, REE-, Th- and U-bearing minerals associated with the sulphide ore deposit. Detailed descriptions and microprobe analyses are presented of the rare earth minerals yttrian zirconolite and allanite-(Ce), and the zirconium oxide baddeleyite. Yttrian zirconolite is patchily zoned in the actinide elements Th and U, and the low analytical totals suggest the presence of several weight per cent of H2O. The implications of these features with respect to synthetic zirconolite in SYNROC and to radioactive waste management are briefly discussed. Chemical zoning of individual REE in yttrian zirconolite is described and the REE distribution compared with those of zirconolites from other localities. Allanite-(Ce) is generally unzoned, but contains REE-rich rims which are considered to be sub-micron intergrowths of allanite plus a bastnäisite-type mineral phase. The MgO content of allanite-(Ce) is unusually high and appears to be a characteristic feature of allanite from other cerium and mineral occurrences of Central Sweden. The rare earth minerals at Koberg are interpretated as having been formed as a result of localized remobilization of elements including Ti and Zr with H2O- and CO2-rich fluids.

Sixteen fluorapatite specimens from regional skarns in granulite terrain were associated with Al-zoned diopside ± scapolite ± actinolite ± calcite(+ rare phlogopite). Apatite was low in Ce (ave. 0.19% Ce2O3) and enriched in LREE relative to HREE (La/Yb = 31 to 74 in 4 specimens). Some specimens showed small negative Eu anomalies and some crystals were zoned in REE. SrO averaged 0.36%. The mineral contained some carbonate (ave. 0.5% CO2 in 5 specimens), appreciable silica (ave. 0.5%), and variable sulphate (0.1 to 1.2% SO3). Excess charge due to S6+ was largely compensated by Si4+. Chlorine was minor and F accounted for 75–98% of the F, Cl and OH ions. Apatite from marble lacking amphiboles and pyroxenes has a similar chemical composition, but apatite from later carbonatite and fenite contains more Ce and Sr. Apatite from Gatineau fenite, Gatineau carbonatite and world-wide siliceous igneous rock generally contains less S. Apatite from Gatineau skarns normally contains more Cl and less S than that from phosphorite. Magnesian marble was silicated to skarn by reaction with siliceous gneiss. Phosphorus, REE, and Sr were removed from nearby rocks and transported in aqueous, carbonated solutions containing minor amounts of F, Cl and S at granulite-facies conditions. Apatite and calcite precipitation took place in skarns and marble during the Grenville (Proterozoic) orogeny.

Euhedral crystals of complexly zoned niobian titanite (up to 0.3 mm) are enclosed in hedenbergite (Hd53—81Di15—43Jh3-5) and quartz from a hedenbergite vein skarn at Kamenne doly near Pisek, Czech Republic. They are associated with minor clinozoisite-epidote (Ps3—22), calcite, plagioclase (An95). scapolite (Me80—82), scheelite, pyrrhotite, fluorapatite, arsenopyrite, native bismuth and Bi,Te-minerals. The following textural and compositional subtypes were recognized: (I) Nb-rich titanite, (II) Nb-moderate titanite in the central zone, (III) Nb-poor, Sn-enriched titanite and (IV) Nb-poor, Al,F-rich titanite in the outer zone. The substitution Al(Nb,Ta)Ti—2 is dominant in subtypes I and II, the titanite subtype I being characterized by elevated contents of Al ≤ 0.257 atoms per formula unit (a.p.f.u.), Nb (≤ 0.161 a.p.f.u.) and Ta (≤ 0.037 a.p.f.u.). Amounts of Al, Nb and Ta in subtype II are smaller and more variable. The minor substitution SnTi—1 occurs chiefly in titanite subtype III with a content of Sn ≤ 0.039 a.p.f.u.. The substitution Al(F,OH)(TiO)_i is typical for titanite subtype IV exhibiting elevated contents of Al (s£ 0.221 a.p.f.u.), F (≤ 0.196 a.p.f.u.) and Fe (≤ 0.039 a.p.f.u.).

The negative relationship of substitutions Al(F,OH)(TiO)_i vs. SnTi—1 and Al(Nb,Ta)Ti—1 is constrained chiefly by crystal structure rather than by the composition of parent medium alone. Textural relations suggest that the Nb-moderate titanite in the core zone and entire outer zone are products of fluids-induced dissolution-reprecipitation processes. The studied niobian titanite represents a new F-enriched type from a medium-grade, calc-silicate rock.

At least six separate rare earth and uranium-bearing daughter crystals occur in fluid inclusions hosted by andraditic garnet from the Mary Kathleen REE-U ore skarn, Queensland, Australia. The daughter minerals are particularly high in La, Nd and Ce which reflects the relatively high concentration of these in the bulk ore (La2O3 = 33.5%, Nd2O3 = 9.1% and Ce2O2 = 51.5% of the 2.6 wt. % REE common in the ore). The host garnets themselves contain up to 7600 ppm REE and 5 to 2700 ppm U. The energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) are consistent with the following minerals: a (Y, Ce, U, Ca, Fe, Nb, Ta) mineral; a (Ca, Fe, Ce) carbonate(?) mineral; a (Fe, Ca, Y, Ce, Nb, Ta) mineral; a possible carbonate of La, Mn and Nd; a chlorite of Mn and La as well as a possible chloride or oxychloride of K, Mg, Mn and La. Their occurrence infers that relatively high concentrations of REE and U prevailed in the original, oxidized, concentrated (30–70 wt. % total dissolved salts), high-temperature (550–670°) ore solutions. Their presence as daughter crystals may be due to the fact that CaCl2 is a dominant salt in the solutions and that the latter's solubility was sufficiently high to ‘salt out’ the less soluble REE-U components.

Morimotoite, Ca3TiFe2+Si3O12, has been found in contaminated rocks which are considered to be a kind of endoskarn at Fuka, Bitchu-Cho, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Morimotoite is derived from andradite, , by the substitution Ti + Fe2+ = 2Fe3+. It is associated with calcite, vesuvianite, grossular, wollastonite, hematite, prehnite, fluorapatite, perovskite, zircon, baddeleyite and calzirtite. It is cubic with space group Ia3d. The unit cell dimension a is 12.162(3) Å. Its refractive index n is 1.995(2) and the density 3.75(2) g cm−3 (meas.), 3.80 g cm−3 (calc.). The Mohs' hardness is 7.5. Calculation of the analytical data on the basis of twelve oxygen atoms and eight cations shows that this mineral has a simplified chemical formula Ca3(Ti,Fe2+Fe3+)2(Si,Fe3+)3O12 where Ti > Fe2+ > 0.5. Morimotoite was synthesized at low oxygen fugacities, 650 and 700°C and 1 kbar total pressure.

Shimazakiite occurs as greyish white aggregates up to 3 mm in diameter. Two polytypes, shimazakiite-4M and shimazakiite-4O, have been identified, the former in nanometre-sized twin lamellae and the latter in micrometre-sized lamellae. Shimazakiite was discovered in an irregular vein in crystalline limestone near gehlenite-spurrite skarns at Fuka mine, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Associated minerals include takedaite, sibirskite, olshanskyite, parasibirskite, nifontovite, calcite and an uncharacterized hydrous calcium borate. The mineral is biaxial (–), with the following refractive indices (at 589 nm): α = 1.586(2), β = 1.650(2), γ = 1.667(2) and 2Vcalc = 53º [shimazakiite-4M]; and α = 1.584(2), β = 1.648(2), γ = 1.670(2) and 2Vcalc = 54.88º [shimazakiite-4O]. Quantitative electronmicroprobe analyses (means of 28 and 25 determinations) gave the empirical formulae Ca2B1.92O4.76(OH)0.24 and Ca2B1.92O4.76(OH)0.24 for shimazakiite-4M and shimazakiite-4O, respectively. The crystal structure refinements: P21/c, a = 3.5485(12), b = 6.352(2), c = 19.254(6) Å , β = 92.393(13)°, V = 433.6(3) Å3 [for shimazakiite-4M]; and P212121, a = 3.55645(8), b = 6.35194(15), c = 19.2534(5) Å , V = 434.941(18) Å3[for shimazakiite-4O], converged into R1 indices of 0.1273 and 0.0142, respectively. The crystal structure of shimazakiite consists of a layer containing B2O5 units (two near-coplanar triangular corner-sharing BO3 groups) and 6- and 7-coordinate Ca atoms. Different sequences in the c direction of four layers are observed in the polytypes. The five strongest lines in the powder-diffraction pattern [listed as d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 3.02(84)(022); 2.92(100)(10) 2.81(56)(104); 2.76(32)(113); 1.880(32)(11,12,126,118) [for shimazakiite-4M]; and 3.84(33)(014); 3.02(42)(022); 2.86(100)(104); 2.79(29)(113); 1.903(44)(126,118) [for shimazakiite-4O].

Nifontovite and olshanskyite, two rare hydrous calcium borate minerals, have been found in crystalline limestone near gehlenite-spurrite skarns at Fuka, Okayama Prefecture. Nifontovite occurs as aggregates of tabular crystals up to 5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, and rarely as euhedral crystals up to 1 mm long. Olshanskyite occurs as anhedral masses, or as micro-twinned platy crystals up to 1 cm long. Wet chemical analyses give the empirical formulae Ca3.052B5.991O6.038(OH)12·1.96H2O and Ca2.888B3.997(OH)18 on the basis of O = 20 for nifontovite and OH=18 for olshanskyite, respectively. The formulae are consistent with those from type localities.

The X-ray powder data for these minerals were determined with accuracy. The unit cell parameters of nifontovite agree closely with those published previously. X-ray studies show that olshanskyite is triclinic with the possible space group P1̄ or P1 and a = 9.991(5), b = 14.740(11), c = 7.975(3) Å, α = 94.53(4), β = 69.08(3), γ = 112.44(5)° and Z = 3. The density 2.19 g cm−3 (meas.) obtained for olshanskyite agrees with the estimated ideal value 2.31 g cm−3 (calc.). Nifontovite was formed by hydrothermal alteration of an anhydrous borate, and olshanskyite was formed by hydrothermal alteration of nifontovite and the anhydrous borate.

In the Gåsborn area, West Bergslagen, central Sweden, Mn-silicate-magnetite-jacobsite skarns were formed as the result of three successive processes. (1) Deposition of exhalative-sedimentary manganiferous iron-ore-bearing sediments together with cherts and volcanics. (2) Intrusion of a synvolcanic anorogenic granite and some slightly younger gabbros and tonalites: under influence of these intrusives the manganiferous iron-ore-bearing sediments were metamorphosed into (a) rhodonite(I)-magnetite-pyrophanite-garnet assemblages; (b) (manganiferous) hedenbergite(I)-allanite-titanite-garnet-magnetite assemblages; (c) tephroite-jacobsite-pyrophanite-garnet assemblages and (d) magnetite-bearing quartzites. (3) Release of hydrothermal fluids from the granite and subsequent alteration of the above assemblages into metasomatic infiltration skarns, consisting of rhodonite(II), garnet, hedenbergite(II), biotite, actinolite or edenite (with up to 20.11 wt.% MnO), chlorite, bementite, fluorite, helvite, rhodochrosite, hematite, rutile and accessory galena, sphalerite, wittichenite, aikinite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

The maximum temperature (T) and pressure (P) during contact metamorphism are estimated at 550°C and 1.0 kbar respectively. The fluid under influence of which the metasomatic infiltration skarns were formed was relatively rich in Fe, Cl and F and carried little or no Mg and Mn.

During early diagenesis (beginning of stage 2) fo2 was between the hematite/magnetite (hm/mt) and the hausmannite + hematite = jacobsite buffers (h + m = j). During stage 2, with increasing T, fo2 changed from above to below hm/mt. Magnetite and jacobsite at some distance from the hydrothermal veins from which the metasomatic skarn-forming fluids were released, were altered during stage 3 into hematite. Magnetite in, and close to the hydrothermal veins was not altered to hematite, implying an increase in fo2 to above hm/mt with increasing distance from these veins.

A reinvestigation of the type specimen of wadalite, ideally Ca12Al10Si4O32Cl6, from Tadano, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, reveals that it has well-defined chemical sector zoning. The mineral occurs in skarn xenoliths in two-pyroxene andesite and forms tris-tetrahedral crystals up to 1 mm in size. The mineral is cubic, I¯43d, with a = 12.009(2) Å, V = 1731.8(8) Å3 and Z = 2. The zoning is divided into two sectors, {21¯1} and {211}, on the basis of back-scattered-electron images. The {21¯1} sector is more enriched in Fe3+, Si, Mg and Cl, and depleted in Al than the {211} sector. The empirical formulae yielded by the averaged compositions for the {21¯1} and {211} sectors are: Ca12.01(Al7.88$\hbox{Fe}_{{\rm 0}{\rm. 99}}^{{\rm 3 +}} $Si4.51Mg0.56Ti0.05)Σ13.99O32.22Cl5.55 and Ca12.05(Al8.42$\hbox{Fe}_{{\rm 0}{\rm. 85}}^{{\rm 3 +}} $Si4.20Mg0.44Ti0.04)Σ13.95O32.19Cl5.38, respectively. Compositional variations in the wadalite grains suggest that the Si contents are controlled mainly by the substitution T(Al,Fe3+) + W□ ↔ TSi + W(Cl,F). The presence of sector zoning suggests that the wadalite grew during rapid non-equilibrium crystallization.

A CO-bearing member of the hydroxylapatite–hydroxylellestadite series occurs as a Si-rich part of a hydroxylapatite–hydroxylellestadite series mineral (hydroxylapatitess) in a skarn xenolith from Tadano, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Hydroxylapatitess is composed of Si-poor and Si-rich parts. The Si-poor part is F-rich hydroxylapatite. The infrared spectrum of the Si-rich part demonstrates the presence of B-type CO3. A representative analysis of the Si-rich part yielded the empirical formula Ca4.989[(PO4)1.315 (SiO4)0.848 (SO4)0.368(CO2.943)0.480]∑3.011(OH0.629 Cl0.264 F0.107)∑1.000 on the basis of 8 cations, assuming Si = S + C. There is a very strong inverse correlation between Si and P in both the Si-poor and Si-rich parts. These data indicate that the substitution mechanism (SO4,CO3)2– + (SiO4)4– = 2(PO4)3– probably occurs in hydroxylapatite ss. Therefore, it was concluded that the Si-rich part corresponds to a CO3-bearing hydroxylapatite–hydroxylellestadite series mineral with CO3 partially replacing SO4. Most of the Si-rich part shows CO3 > SO4 and its composition approaches Ca5(SiO4)1.5(CO3,SO4)1.5(OH,Cl,F).

Kerimasite {Ca3}[Zr2](SiFe23+)O12, a rare member of the garnet supergroup, has been identified in association with andradite–grossular and their hydrated analogues, monticellite, perovskite, clintonite, anhydrite, hydroxylellestadite–fluorellestadite, spinel, magnetite, brucite, valeriite and other minerals from a Ca-Mg skarn in the exocontact of a granodiorite porphyry intrusion in Vysoká-Zlatno Cu-Au skarn-porphyry deposit, the Štiavnica stratovolcano, Central Slovakia. Kerimasite forms euhedral-to-anhedral crystals, 2 to 100 μm across with 0.73–1.62 atoms per formula unit (a.p.f.u.) Zr (16.2–33.6 wt.% ZrO2), 0.34–0.66 a.p.f.u. Ti (4.6–9.3 wt.% TiO2), 0.01 to 0.05 a.p.f.u. Hf (0.4–1.7 wt.% HfO2: the largest Hf content reported in kerimasite), and small amounts of Sn, Sc and Nb (≤0.02 a.p.f.u.). Tetrahedral Si (0.99–1.67 a.p.f.u.; 9.8–18.1 wt.% SiO2) is balanced by 0.85–1.26 a.p.f.u. Fe3+ and by 0.46–0.76 a.p.f.u. Al. The crystals commonly show regular, oscillatory concentric zoning or irregular patchy internal textures due to Zr, Ti, Fe, Al and Si variations during growth or partial alteration and dissolution-reprecipitation. The main substitutions in kerimasite are Y(Fe,Sc)3+ + ZSi4+ = Y(Zr,Ti,Hf,Sn)4+ + Z(Fe,Al)3+ and Ti4+ = Zr4+. Associated andradite locally contains irregular Ti- and Zr-rich zones with ≤11 wt.% TiO2 and ≤4.4 wt.% ZrO2. In comparison with common Ca-rich garnets, the micro-Raman spectrum of kerimasite shows that many bands shift towards much lower wavenumbers, either due to Fe3+ substitution on the Z site or to the strong influence of neighbouring octahedrally-coordinated Zr4+ on internal vibrations of tetrahedra that share oxygens. The formation of kerimasite, monticellite, perovskite and other phases indicate a relatively Ca-rich and Si, Al-poor environment, analogous to other known occurrences of Ca-Zr garnets (Ca-rich skarns and xenoliths, carbonatites). Kerimasite and associated skarn minerals originated during contact-thermal metamorphism of Upper Triassic marl slates with limestone, dolomite, anhydrite and gypsum by Miocene granodiorite porphyry at T ≈ 700°C and P ≈ 50–70 MPa.
