According to truthmaker theory, particular truths are true in virtue of the existence of particular entities. Truthmaker maximalism holds that this is so for all truths. Negative existential and other ‘negative’ truths threaten the position. Despite this, maximalism is an appealing thesis for truthmaker theorists. This motivates interest in parsimonious maximalist theories, which do not posit extra entities for truthmaker duty. Such theories have been offered by David Lewis and Gideon Rosen, Ross Cameron, and Jonathan Schaffer. However, it will be argued here that these theories cannot be sustained, and hence maximalism comes with a serious ontological cost. Neither Armstrong's invocation of totality facts nor the Martin-Kukso line on absences can meet this cost satisfactorily. I'll claim that negative facts are the best (and perhaps only) way out of the problem for the truthmaker maximalist.

In this essay I aim to understand how Adam Smith predicted the progress and prosperity of a commercial society and analyze the main attributes of his natural liberty system. I examine the meaning and implications of prosperity in Smith’s thought. Finally, I analyze the role of the division of labor and parsimony in the overall process of societal advancement.

Glugoides intestinalis, Microsporidium sp., Ordospora colligata, Gurleya vavrai, Larssonia obtusa and Flabelliforma magnivora are microsporidian parasites of planctonic freshwater crustaceans Daphnia spp. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA which revealed their positions as polyphyletic. G. intestinalis, Microsporidium sp. and O. colligata, which are horizontally transmitted gut parasites with small spores and low virulence, group with different lineages. G. intestinalis is related to 2 microsporidia infecting lepidopterans and to Vittaforma corneae, which has been described as a human pathogen. It is thought that V. corneae may have an invertebrate as its natural host. Microsporidium sp. is a relative of the genera Enterocytozoon and Nucleospora, pathogens of man and fish respectively. O. colligata is the first species found to be closely related to the genus Encephalitozoon, which is comprised of 3 species that are parasites of homeothermic vertebrates. G. vavrai and L. obtusa are sister taxa that branch close to the Amblyosporidae, the only microsporidia with known intermediate hosts. This finding supports the presumption of secondary hosts for G. vavrai and L. obtusa, as it has not been possible to maintain these species in Daphnia in the laboratory. F. magnivora roots deep at the base of the phylum microsporidia with no close relative found so far.

Secondary structure analysis of 34 internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) sequences showed that the current model for the green algae Scenedesmus and Desmodesmus is not accurate. In particular, helix I of the currently used model showed considerable deviations from our new model. The newly proposed model is supported by many two-sided compensated base pair changes and fully compensated insertions in all four helices. Phylogenetic analysis by maximum parsimony based on the new alignment confirmed the recent division of the old genus Scenedesmus into the new genera Scenedesmus and Desmodesmus. However, the analysis was not able to show phylogenetic relationships within these two genera. Hence, the ITS-2 region alone is not suitable for clarifying the phylogeny of Scenedesmus and Desmodesmus and new regions have to be found for future sequence analyses.

We present the first estimate of the phylogenetic relationships among all 916 extant and nine recently extinct species of bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera), a group that accounts for almost one-quarter of extant mammalian diversity. This phylogeny was derived by combining 105 estimates of bat phylogenetic relationships published since 1970 using the supertree construction technique of Matrix Representation with Parsimony (MRP). Despite the explosive growth in the number of phylogenetic studies of bats since 1990, phylogenetic relationships in the order have been studied non-randomly. For example, over one-third of all bat systematic studies to date have focused on relationships within Phyllostomidae, whereas relationships within clades such as Kerivoulinae and Murinae have never been studied using cladistic methods. Resolution in the supertree similarly differs among clades: overall resolution is poor (46.4% of a fully bifurcating solution) but reaches 100% in some groups (e.g. relationships within Mormoopidae). The supertree analysis does not support a recent proposal that Microchiroptera is paraphyletic with respect to Megachiroptera, as the majority of source topologies support microbat monophyly. Although it is not a substitute for comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of primary molecular and morphological data, the bat supertree provides a useful tool for future phylogenetic comparative and macroevolutionary studies. Additionally, it identifies clades that have been little studied, highlights groups within which relationships are controversial, and like all phylogenetic studies, provides preliminary hypotheses that can form starting points for future phylogenetic studies of bats.

One way to build larger, more comprehensive phylogenies is to combine the vast amount of phylogenetic information already available. We review the two main strategies for accomplishing this (combining raw data versus combining trees), but employ a relatively new variant of the latter: supertree construction. The utility of one supertree technique, matrix representation using parsimony analysis (MRP), is demonstrated by deriving a complete phylogeny for all 271 extant species of the Carnivora from 177 literature sources. Beyond providing a ‘consensus’ estimate of carnivore phylogeny, the tree also indicates taxa for which the relationships remain controversial (e.g. the red panda; within canids, felids, and hyaenids) or have not been studied in any great detail (e.g. herpestids, viverrids, and intrageneric relationships in the procyonids). Times of divergence throughout the tree were also estimated from 74 literature sources based on both fossil and molecular data. We use the phylogeny to show that some lineages within the Mustelinae and Canidae contain significantly more species than expected for their age, illustrating the tree's utility for studies of macroevolution. It will also provide a useful foundation for comparative and conservational studies involving the carnivores.

Since the BBS article in which Premack and Woodruff (1978) asked “Does the chimpanzee have a theory of mind?,” it has been repeatedly claimed that there is observational and experimental evidence that apes have mental state concepts, such as “want” and “know.” Unlike research on the development of theory of mind in childhood, however, no substantial progress has been made through this work with nonhuman primates. A survey of empirical studies of imitation, self-recognition, social relationships, deception, role-taking, and perspective-taking suggests that in every case where nonhuman primate behavior has been interpreted as a sign of theory of mind, it could instead have occurred by chance or as a product of nonmentalistic processes such as associative learning or inferences based on nonmental categories. Arguments to the effect that, in spite of this, the theory of mind hypothesis should be accepted because it is more parsimonious than alternatives or because it is supported by convergent evidence are not compelling. Such arguments are based on unsupportable assumptions about the role of parsimony in science and either ignore the requirement that convergent evidence proceed from independent assumptions, or fail to show that it supports the theory of mind hypothesis over nonmentalist alternatives. Progress in research on theory of mind requires experimental procedures that can distinguish the theory of mind hypothesis from nonmentalist alternatives. A procedure that may have this potential is proposed. It uses conditional discrimination training and transfer tests to determine whether chimpanzees have the concept “see.” Commentators are invited to identify flaws in the procedure and to suggest alternatives.

Previous phylogenetic analyses of caecilian neuroanatomical data yield results that are difficult to reconcile with those based upon more traditional morphological and molecular data. A review of the literature reveals problems in both the analyses and the data upon which the analyses were based. Revision of the neuroanatomical data resolves some, but not all, of these problems and yields a data set that, based on comparative measures of data quality, appears to represent some improvement over previous treatments. An extended data set of more traditional primarily morphological data is developed to facilitate the evaluation of caecilian relationships and the quality and utility of neuroanatomical and more traditional data. Separate and combined analyses of the neuroanatomical and traditional data produce a variety of results dependent upon character weighting, with little congruence among the results of the separate analyses and little support for relationships among the ‘higher’ caecilians with the combined data. Randomization tests indicate that: (1) there is significantly less incompatibility within each data set than that expected by chance alone; (2) the between-data-set incompatibility is significantly greater than that expected for random partitions of characters so the two data sets are significantly heterogeneous; (3) the neuroanatomical data appear generally of lower quality than the traditional data; (4) the neuroanatomical data are more compatible with the traditional data than are phylogenetically uninformative data. The lower quality of the neuroanatomical data may reflect small sample sizes. In addition, a subset of the neuroanatomical characters supports an unconventional grouping of all those caecilians with the most rudimentary eyes, which may reflect concerted homoplasy. Although the neuroanatomical data may be of lower quality than the traditional data, their compatibility with the traditional data suggests that they cannot be dismissed as phylogenetically meaningless. Conclusions on caecilian relationships are constrained by the conflict between the neuroanatomical and traditional data, the sensitivity of the combined analyses to weighting schemes, and by the limited support for the majority of groups in the majority of the analyses. Those hypotheses that are well supported are uncontroversial, although some have not been tested previously by numerical phylogenetic analyses. However, the data do not justify an hypothesis of ‘higher’ caecilian phylogeny that is both well resolved and well supported.

By assembling the transition matrix of a finite discrete Markov chain from overlays of matrices which are defined only by the serial correlation coefficients and marginal distribution of the chain to be modelled, a considerable saving is made in the number of parameters required to define a multilag Markov chain. This parsimony is achieved without detriment to the marginal distribution or serial correlation structure of the modelled chain. Applications to daily precipitation sequences and reservoir reliability are outlined to demonstrate the model's versatility.

A model for the transition probability matrices (t.p.m.'s) of finite discrete Markov chains is suggested which may help those who wish to use a larger number of states than would seem reasonable with the data available in the current estimation situation. The model is especially useful in that a finite t.p.m. of arbitrary size can be specified by as few as two parameters. An example of the model's estimation and use is presented, showing it in a fair light in comparison with the conventional method of t.p.m. specification.
