Agriculture is one of the major farming activities, representing 32% of the gross domestic product of Madagascar and 74.3% of the population is involved in this activity. Fruit flies of the Tephritidae family are considered as the most destructive pests for agriculture in the country, nevertheless, few data exist on host plants and distribution of those pests. In the present study, we address those questions by conducting a large survey between November 2016 and July 2018 across the six agroecological regions of Madagascar. Fruit and vegetable were sampled from 198 plant species (wild and cultivated) and represented 37,965 fruits from all regions of Madagascar. The infestation index ranged from 0.06 to 538.46 pupae/kg, the infestation percentage was up to 54.84% in some samples, 63 plant species were considered as host of Tephritidae. Twelve fruit fly species were identified, seven of which were previously described as endemic, five species could be considered as widespread (altitudinal gradients between 1 and 1634 m asl) and major pests in Madagascar: Ceratitis malgassa (23 plant species from 12 families), Neoceratitis cyanescens (16 plant species from one family), Bactrocera dorsalis (18 plant species from 12 families), Dacus demmerezi (ten plant species from one family), Dacus vertebratus (six species from one family). Those results are of importance for implementation of control measures.

There is an ongoing relationship between host plants and herbivores. The nutrient substances and secondary compounds found in the host plant can not only impact the growth and development process of herbivores, but, more importantly, may also affect their survival and reproductive fitness. Vitellogenesis is the core process of reproductive regulation and is generally considered as a reliable indicator for evaluating the degree of ovarian development in females. Vitellogenin (Vg) plays a critical role in the synthesis and secretion of yolk protein. In this study, the full-length cDNA of the Vg gene in an alien invasive species, the nipa palm hispid beetle Octodonta nipae Maulik (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) (OnVg) was cloned and, the effect of host plant on the OnVg expression level and ovarian development was investigated. The results revealed that the OnVg was highly and exclusively expressed in adult females, but barely detectable in larvae, pupae and adult males. The relative expression level of OnVg and egg hatchability were much higher in females fed on Phoenix canariensis (their preferred host) than those fed on Phoenix roebelenii. A positive correlation relationship between OnVg expression and egg hatchability was also detected. Additionally, the anatomy of the female reproductive system showed that the ovaries of individuals fed on P. canariensis were considerably more developed than in females fed on P. roebelenii. The results may be applicable to many pest management situations through reproductive disturbance by alternating host plant species or varieties or by reproductive regulation through vitellogenesis mediated by specific endocrine hormones.

The phenology of insect emergence affects reproductive success and is especially critical in short-lived species. An increasing number of studies have documented the effects of thermal and other climatic variations and of unpredictable habitats on the timing of adult insect emergence within and between populations and years. Numerous interacting factors may affect the phenology of adult emergence. Host-plant quality and availability is a key factor that has been largely neglected in studies of the phenology of phytophagous insects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of host plant characteristics on the rate of larval growth and the pattern of emergence in a wild population of Lobesia botrana (European grapevine moth), a significant pest in European vineyards. The phenology of emergence differed significantly among the six tested varieties of grapes. The percentage of bunches harboring pupae was similar among the different grape varieties, and the total number of pupae collected was similar to the number of emerging adults per bunch. Among the six varieties of grapes, 0–25 pupae were produced on each bunch. Each of the grape varieties had a single wave of emergence, in which males emerged before females, but their emergence phenology differed significantly in Chardonnay, Chasselas, and Pinot grapes. Both genders had extended durations of emergence in Merlot grapes. Together, the present results show that the characteristics of the grape host plant affect the emergence phenology of L. botrana.

The cryptic species Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1), formerly referred to as ‘B biotype’, of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci complex entered China in the mid 1990s, and the Mediterranean (MED) cryptic species, formerly referred to as ‘Q biotype’, of the same whitefly complex entered China around 2003. Field surveys in China after 2003 indicate that in many regions MED has been replacing the earlier invader MEAM1. The factors underlying this displacement are unclear. We conducted laboratory experiments and field sampling to examine the effects of insecticide application on the competitive interactions between MEAM1 and MED. In the laboratory, on cotton, a plant showing similar levels of suitability to both whitefly species, MEAM1 displaced MED in five generations when initial populations of the two species were equal and no insecticide was applied. In contrast, MED displaced MEAM1 in seven and two generations, respectively, when 12.5 and 50.0 mg l−1 imidacloprid was applied to the plants via soil drench. Field sampling indicated that in a single season MED displaced MEAM1 on crops heavily sprayed with neonicotinoid insecticides but the relative abundance of the two species changed little on crops without insecticide spray. We also examined the effects of host plants on the competitive interactions between the two species in the laboratory. When cohorts with equal abundance of MEAM1 and MED were set up on different host plants, MEAM1 displaced MED on cabbage and tomato in five and seven generations, respectively, but MED displaced MEAM1 on pepper in two generations. As field populations of MED have lower susceptibility than those of MEAM1 to nearly all commonly used insecticides including imidacloprid, insecticide application seems to have played a major role in shifting the species competitive interaction effects in favour of MED in the field across China. Host plants may also shape competition between the two species depending on the relative levels of plant suitability.

Urtica dioica and Convolvulus arvensis are the main host plants of Hyalesthes obsoletus and play an important role in the epidemiology of Bois noir of grapevines. The earliest survey, which was carried out to compare the phenology of nymphal instars on U. dioica and C. arvensis, had highlighted some problems in the identification of the instars. Therefore, the correct identification of nymphs to species and instar level became a preliminary aim of this research. Adults and nymphs attributable to H. obsoletus were collected during 2008–2010 in three flatland vineyard habitats of northern Italy on U. dioica, C. arvensis and Artemisia verlotorum. Nymphs and morphologically identified adults of H. obsoletus were submitted to molecular identification. Morphometric and morphological studies were carried out on nymphs collected in the field or obtained in laboratory rearings. Molecular methods not only confirmed the identity of adults, but also allowed the assignment of the nymphs to this species. Morphometric and morphological characteristics (e.g. body and head-thoracic lengths, number of thoracic pits) showed the existence of five nymphal instars. Morphometric differences between newly hatched and older first-instar nymphs were observed. A key to distinguish the five instars was proposed. Evident differences between H. obsoletus nymphs studied here and elsewhere were identified. According to differences in adult-flight period, an earlier phenology of nymphs on C. arvensis than on U. dioica was observed. In particular, the typical overwintering instar was the second on U. dioica and the third on C. arvensis.

The population of peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), in Scotland comprises large numbers of a few superclones with much smaller numbers of other clones, and the reason for their differential success has yet to be elucidated. In the current study, the reproduction of lineages derived from these clones was measured by counting the numbers of offspring produced by a one-day-old nymph after 15 days. This was measured on four plant species, including local agricultural hosts and at two different temperatures (14 and 18°C). There were significant differences in clonal lineage reproduction on different hosts and at different temperatures and amongst clonal lineages on the same hosts at the same temperature. Lineages of local insecticide sensitive clones did not have the best reproductive potential; instead, a recently introduced clonal lineage carrying MACE insecticide resistance was the best reproducer. The clonal lineage with the lowest reproductive potential also carried insecticide resistance, but this was kdr. A lineage from a local insecticide-sensitive clone was the least affected by reduced temperature. There was evidence of host plant specialisation in some of the clonal lineages.

In cotton-growing areas of Central Africa, timing of host crops and pest management practices in annual rainfed cropping systems result in a shifting mosaic of habitats that influence the dynamics and resistance of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) populations on spatial scales, both within and across seasons. From 2002 to 2006, regional and local resistance was monitored among cotton fields and among the major host plants of the bollworm. From 2002, pyrethroid resistance increased within and across cotton-growing seasons to reach a worrying situation at the end of the 2005 growing season. Cotton crops played a fundamental role in the increase in seasonal resistance, even if the intensive use of insecticides on local tomato crops strongly concentrated resistance alleles in residual populations throughout the off-season. Due to the relative stability of resistance in H. armigera populations despite a long off-season, we believe that after the dispersal of the moths southwards at the end of the growing season, reverse migration mainly accounts for the reconstitution of populations at the onset of the following growing season. In addition, local resistance monitoring in 2005 and 2006 showed that it was possible to control the increase in resistance by temporarily stopping the use of pyrethroids during the period of peak infestation of cotton by H. armigera. On the other hand, the similar resistance frequency of populations sampled from sprayed and unsprayed synchronous hosts confirmed the absence of reproductive isolation between adults. As a result, diversity in cropping systems should be encouraged by planting alternative host plants to provide a mosaic of habitats, which in return would provide insecticide-free refuges. The implications for insecticide resistance management in annual cropping systems are discussed.

A detailed study was conducted on the mating behaviour of Bactrocera cacuminata (Hering) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in nature. Plant tissues from Solanum mauritianum Scopoli, the primary larval host for B. cacuminata, were also analysed for methyl eugenol content. In the field, over a 15 month period, 44,171 observations of adult B. cacuminata individuals were made including 1109 mating pairs on S. mauritianum. Calling behaviour consisting of wing fanning and anus beating by males was also consistently observed on the underside of leaves of S. mauritianum after sunset. Female flies that arrived into these groups of 10–15 calling males were mated and often remained coupled until dawn. No methyl eugenol was detected from the analysis of leaves, flowers and fruits of S. mauritianum. Thus, B. cacuminata does not need to aggregate at sites where methyl eugenol is present and the hypothesis that this chemical plays a role in the selection of mating sites by B. cacuminata is not supported by the current study. It is concluded that S. mauritianum is the primary site of mating for B. cacuminata in nature and that the concept that the larval host plant is the centre of activity for dacine fruit flies remains robust, being fully supported by the results of this study.

The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, harbors Portiera aleyrodidarum, an obligatory symbiotic bacterium, as well as several secondary symbionts including Rickettsia, Hamiltonella, Wolbachia, Arsenophonus, Cardinium and Fritschea, the function of which is unknown. Bemisia tabaci is a species complex composed of numerous biotypes, which may differ from each other both genetically and biologically. Only the B and Q biotypes have been reported from Israel. Secondary symbiont infection frequencies of Israeli laboratory and field populations of B. tabaci from various host plants were determined by PCR, in order to test for correlation between bacterial composition to biotype and host plant. Hamiltonella was detected only in populations of the B biotype, while Wolbachia and Arsenophonus were found only in the Q biotype (33% and 87% infection, respectively). Rickettsia was abundant in both biotypes. Cardinium and Fritschea were not found in any of the populations. No differences in secondary symbionts were found among host plants within the B biotype; but within the Q biotype, all whiteflies collected from sage harboured both Rickettsia and Arsenophonus, an infection frequency which was significantly higher than those found in association with all other host plants. The association found between whitefly biotypes and secondary symbionts suggests a possible contribution of these bacteria to host characteristics such as insecticide resistance, host range, virus transmission and speciation.

Life table studies of Earias vittella (Fabricius) on different hosts in the Insect Biotech Laboratory, Department of Entomology, Dr PDKV Akola, revealed that survival (lx) of immature stages of E. vittella on different hosts was 0.65 on okra, 0.56 on cotton, 0.54 on semi-synthetic diet and 0.51 on mesta. The net reproductive rate (Ro), at the end of each generation, of E. vittella was 81.91 on okra, 56.70 on cotton, 53.02 on semi-synthetic diet and 36.63 on mesta (Hibiscus cannabinus L.). The net reproductive rate (Ro) followed the same order as the survival rate (lx) on the different hosts. The innate capacity for increase in numbers (rm) ranged between 0.0888 and 0.1334 females/female/day. In descending order, the rm values on different hosts were okra (0.1334), cotton (0.1111), semi-synthetic diet (0.1029) and mesta (0.0888).

The literature on the response of insect species to the changing environments experienced along altitudinal gradients is diverse and widely dispersed. There is a growing awareness that such responses may serve as analogues for climate warming effects occurring at a particular fixed altitude or latitude over time. This review seeks, therefore, to synthesise information on the responses of insects and allied groups to increasing altitude and provide a platform for future research. It focuses on those functional aspects of insect biology that show positive or negative reaction to altitudinal changes but avoids emphasising adaptation to high altitude per se. Reactions can be direct, with insect characteristics or performance responding to changing environmental parameters, or they can be indirect and mediated through the insect's interaction with other organisms. These organisms include the host plant in the case of herbivorous insects, and also competitor species, specific parasitoids, predators and pathogens. The manner in which these various factors individually and collectively influence the morphology, behaviour, ecophysiology, growth and development, survival, reproduction, and spatial distribution of insect species is considered in detail. Resultant patterns in the abundance of individual species populations and of community species richness are examined. Attempts are made throughout to provide mechanistic explanations of trends and to place each topic, where appropriate, into the broader theoretical context by appropriate reference to key literature. The paper concludes by considering how montane insect species will respond to climate warming.

The African rice gall midge Orseolia oryzivora is a major pest of rice in Burkina Faso. The present study was carried out during four consecutive crop seasons from 1999 to 2001, in three rice-irrigated schemes, near Bobo Dioulasso town in south Burkina Faso. The fluctuation of immature stages of the pest and their damage, with regard to host plants was monitored. These included the cultivated rice Oryza sativa and its ratoons, and wild rice Oryza longistaminata. Sampling on growing rice was carried out monthly in 1m2 quadrats, in each of 100 randomly selected farmers fields. Sampling on rice ratoons was carried out after rice harvest and 500 tillers were randomly selected in the same fields and taken to the laboratory for dissection. Data on wild rice were collected every month by sampling and dissecting 500 tillers per site. This study revealed that in the absence of rice, the pest survived on rice ratoons and wild rice. However, cultivated rice was the preferred host plant as the crop recorded over 15% galling during wet seasons while damage was very low in dry seasons. Results from this study represent an important step towards the development of an IPM programme to control the rice gall midge, with regard to its host plant relationships.

The influence of three cultivars of Sorghum bicolor (L.) on the activity of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae on the stemborer Chilo partellus was investigated in the field and laboratory. Fungal activity in the field varied with the plant cultivar and the inoculum concentration. Larvae fed on different cultivars and inoculated with the fungus in the laboratory did not vary in their susceptibility to the pathogen. However, time to 50% mortality (LT50) of the larvae was shorter in cultivar IS 1044 than in cultivars ICS 3 and ICS 4. Compatibility of the fungus with cultivars is therefore an important consideration when using fungi for the biological control of stemborers.

Bioenergetica, efficiencies of energy transfer and growth of Spodoptera litura larvae reared on mulberry, cabbage, castor and wild hempweed leaves were determined using calorimetrie procedures. Energy contents (J mg−1 ash-free tissue) of castor leaves were higher than those of cabbage, mulberry and wild hempweed. Fresh leaves had slightly higher energy contents than those left over. The rates of ingestion and egestion of food energy increased linearly with the age of larvae. Energy consumption decreased exponentially with larval age, and this decreasing trend showed an intermediate rise at the fifth instar. Assimilation efficiencies were highest and lowest for the first and sixth instar larvae respectively. Efficiencies of gross and net larval production showed linear increases with instar stage, except at the fifth instar which showed dramatic declines in conversion of ingested and assimilated energy into insect biomass. Efficiencies of gross and net productions during early first to third instars were low, but those during the sixth instar were high. The pathways of energy transfer indicated that an average of 58.5% of the total energy ingested was lost directly through faeces, respiration and exuviae, while about 42.2% of the total energy ingested was actually converted into growth of an S. litura larva.

Life tables of Earias vittella reared on Abelmoschus esculentus L., (okra) Gossypium hirsutum L., (cotton) and Abutilon indicum G. Den. in the laboratory at 27 ± 1°C were constructed. The pest population increased at the rate of 0.124, 0.106 and 0.082 females/female/day, respectively on these seeds. A significant correlation between fecundity and body weight of females raised on these seeds was obtained. The shorter generation time and higher intrinsic rate of population increase on okra seeds shortened the population doubling time of E. vittella to 5.67 days, while the doubling time was 6.64 or 9.00 days on cotton or A. indicum seeds. In a larval period of 16–17 days E. vittella consumed okra, cotton and A. indicum seeds at the rate of 463. 6,493.3 and 382.8 J/g/day. E. vittella fed on okra displayed the highest efficiencies of assimilation (74%), gross (49%) and net production (66%). The efficiencies were comparatively low for the insects fed on A. indicum seeds.

Females of Bruchidius atrolineatus (Pic) lay their eggs in the fields on maturing or dry pods of their host plant, Vigna unguiculata. Under experimental conditions in the presence of maturing and dry pods connected with the plant, 80% of eggs are laid on maturing pods. The preference for maturing pods is observed in two generations of B. atrolineatus and varies with the age of females. In the presence of pods separated from the plant, 69% of eggs are laid on dry pods. These results show the importance of methodology during insect behavioural studies. In the absence of choice, reproduction of B. atrolineatus females is more stimulated with dry pods than with maturing ones. These experiments show that factors which influence the choice of the pods are probably different from those stimulating oviposition.

In Africa, cassava green mite (CGM) is an exotic tetranychid, recently introduced from the Neotropics. In the absence of effective natural enemies, seasonal changes in the weather, either directly through several climatic factors or indirectly through the host plant, dominate the phenology and limit the growth rates of CGM populations. The intrinsically high rate of increase of CGM results in large populations when enhanced by high temperatures and suitable host plants during periods when evaporation exceeds precipitation. Mite numbers decline as precipitation increases and when suitable host plants are not available. The suitability of a host plant, as measured by CGM's intrinsic rate of increase, varies with drought stress, plant age, leaf age and cultivar. The introduction of effective natural enemies from CGM's area of origin is expected to dampen the seasonal abundance of this mite without changing its general phenology.

Descriptions and morphometrics of the eggs and waxen structures on the nymphs and adults of Orthezia insignis are given. Architecturally, the waxen designs are similar throughout the nymphal instars but vary in the construction details. On the newly hatched (issued) nymphs only structural outlines are visible under a binocular microscope and on older instars, wax secretions become progressively more copious and conspicuous. At adult stage, the greatest amount of wax is used to construct the ovisacs. Reproduction was parthenogenetic and embryogenesis was characterized by three colour changes of the eggs: the white, newly laid eggs successively turn light yellow; bright yellow and then brown before eclosion. The frequency of nymphal issuance was influenced by the relative positions of the egg batches inside the sac. Nymphs hatching from eggs laid late in life, took longer to scramble out of the sac. Evidence deduced from the rate of nymphal issuance and the mean number of light yellow eggs at any given time, suggested that ovulation, embryogenesis and eclosion are probably synchronized biological activities in Orthezia.

Development of nymphs in the laboratory took approx. 42 days and was marked by three stadial stages. Morphometrics of the right metathoracic femurs from dead nymphs and exuviae reliably confirmed a similar developmental pattern in wild population.

Simultaneously or selectively, nymphs and adults of Orthezia insignis used physiological age of the host-units, the relative sizes of sap pathways and the concentration of photosynthates to choose feeding and/or oviposition sites, depending on the state of the host plant. On the non-flowering plants, physiological age and relative sizes of pathways were the principal determinants, while on flowering food plants all the three criteria were used although the sink-photosynthate-concentration factor had a decidedly dominant influence on Orthezia than otherwise.

The development and morphology of the immature stages were examined by means of dissections, linear measurements, light and scanning electron microscopy of the egg, the larval instars and the puparium.

The measurements were of body lengths and widths and the lengths of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton. Observations on the morphology of the immature stages concentrated on the surface structure of the egg, the head capsule, the anterior and posterior spiracles, the ventral plate and the cephalopharyngeal skeleton of the different larval instars.

Development and survival of larvae at different growth stages of the sorghum plant were investigated in the laboratory. Survival and rate of larval development were dependent on the size of the host plant. Survival was usually highest when plants about 2 weeks old were infected, low in very young plants and lowest in plants more than 50 days old. Within groups of insects hatched from eggs laid on the same day, the occurrence of various larval instars overlapped. The first instar was found from the 2nd to the 8th day after egg-laying, the second instar from the 4th to the 12th day, and the third instar from the 5th to the 18th day. Pupation started on the 14th day and adults started to emerge on the 21st day.
