En este trabajo presentamos el hallazgo, la identificación y el análisis de dos colecciones de artefactos etnográficos fueguinos recolectados por Martin Gusinde durante sus trabajos de campo con los pueblos originarios Selk'nam, Yagan y Kawésqar en Tierra del Fuego entre 1918 y 1924, y luego transportados a dos museos europeos. Se trata de 391 artefactos etnográficos fueguinos resguardados en el Missionshaus Sankt Gabriel y el Weltmuseum, ubicados en Viena (Austria). Identificamos los artefactos según la sociedad fueguina que los produjo: 118 selk'nam, 125 yagan y 83 kawésqar; y los analizamos de acuerdo a la clase de artefacto, morfología y materia prima. Caracterizamos así cada colección y la estudiamos de forma comparativa, evaluando su proveniencia e infiriendo que su “representatividad etnográfica” puede ser asignada a Gusinde. Sin embargo, las colecciones son internamente heterogéneas, y muestran recurrencias inter-colección que remiten a las distintas agencias de los pueblos originarios fueguinos, mostrando cómo la ontología de la colección subsume no sólo la agencia del coleccionista, sino también la agencia de los productores/usuarios originarios de los artefactos.

Three twig-growing lichen species belonging to the family Teloschistaceae from southern Patagonia are described as new to science: Marchantiana pyramus sp. nov., with minute apothecia, orange due to dominant content of emodin, M. ramulicola sp. nov., with minute olive apothecia with dominant parietin and Austroplaca thisbe sp. nov., with clear yellow apothecia also with dominant parietin. Marchantiana subpyracea, M. epibrya and M. queenslandica are new combinations for species which, so far, are known only from New Zealand and Australia. Blastenia circumpolaris is shown to be very common in Patagonia and Marchantiana asserigena is documented for the first time from the Southern Hemisphere, viz. the Falkland Islands. The genus Marchantiana is analyzed here using three genes and is shown to be closely related to Yoshimuria; although appearing as paraphyletic, a monophyletic origin cannot be ruled out. Morphology, ecology and distribution support a monophyletic treatment and Marchantiana is therefore treated as such.

The increasing use of massively parallel sequencing in the study of current and ancient human populations has enabled new approaches to bioanthropological and archaeological issues; however, its application to archaeological samples requires the use of technologies that are not easily accessible outside US and European research centers. To obtain an ancient mitogenome in Argentina, several institutions collaborated to apply massively parallel sequencing and bioinformatic methodologies on an enriched ancient DNA library of an individual from the Beagle Channel (dated 1504 ± 46 years BP), a region of particular interest for this line of inquiry. Phylogenetic reconstruction showed a close relationship with a Yamana from Navarino Island and an individual from Hoste Island (Chilean Antarctic Province): the three shared an ancestor who lived between 203 and 4,439 years ago. These three have mutations reported only for current and ancient individuals from the Beagle Channel, and their relationship with the rest of the D1g sub-haplogroups is unclear. The results obtained here are consistent with the reduction of mobility in the Fuegian archipelago around 4500 years BP that has been proposed based on archaeological evidence.

En este artículo discutimos las prácticas y representaciones culturales de los pueblos indígenas de Patagonia continental e insular (Tierra del Fuego) en relación con los piojos, confrontando registros históricos y etnográficos de los siglos dieciocho al veinte. El consumo de piojos de la cabeza fue una práctica habitual y cotidiana entre los grupos indígenas del sur de Sudamérica, quienes los consideraban un verdadero manjar. Hombres, mujeres, niñas y niños participaban de esta actividad colectiva que a la vez era atravesada por la afectividad, consumiendo lo que ellos mismos conseguían en las pesquisas. El cambio continuo de campamento, el despiojado, el tipo de vestimenta, el uso de pinturas repelentes, aceite de foca y peines eran sus métodos de control de las pediculosis. Se argumenta que el proceso de expansión colonial de los estados republicanos de Argentina y Chile, a fines del siglo diecinueve, habría forzado la modificación de estas prácticas culturales. Las fuentes históricas y etnográficas reflejan, además, las tensiones y contradicciones entre las percepciones y connotaciones negativas de los foráneos y la significancia que tenían los piojos de la cabeza para las poblaciones indígenas.

In the Cordillera Darwin, southernmost South America, we used 10Be and 14C dating, dendrochronology, and historical observations to reconstruct the glacial history of the Dalla Vedova valley from deglacial time to the present. After deglacial recession into northeastern Darwin and Dalla Vedova, by ~16 ka, evidence indicates a glacial advance at ~13 ka coeval with the Antarctic Cold Reversal. The next robustly dated glacial expansion occurred at 870 ± 60 calendar yr ago (approximately AD 1150), followed by less-extensive dendrochronologically constrained advances from shortly before AD 1836 to the mid-twentieth century. Our record is consistent with most studies within the Cordillera Darwin that show that the Holocene glacial maximum occurred during the last millennium. This pattern contrasts with the extensive early- and mid-Holocene glacier expansions farther north in Patagonia; furthermore, an advance at 870 ± 60 yr ago may suggest out-of-phase glacial advances occurred within the Cordillera Darwin relative to Patagonia. We speculate that a southward shift of westerlies and associated climate regimes toward the southernmost tip of the continent, about 900–800 yr ago, provides a mechanism by which some glaciers advanced in the Cordillera Darwin during what is generally considered a warm and dry period to the north in Patagonia.

A late Pleistocene glaciolacustrine record was studied at Fagnano Lake (54°35´S, 67°20´W), central Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, southernmost South America. Two profiles from the Río Valdéz outcrop were collected for isotopic, geochemical, sedimentological, and geophysical analyses. The sedimentological characteristics, such as rhythmites, presence of dropstones, absence of fossil record, and scarce presence of organic matter, suggest deposition in an ice-contact lake, possibly dammed by the Fagnano paleoglacier. Organic matter of C3 plant origin suggests certain cold and wet conditions. A chronology of the late Pleistocene outcrop was obtained from five 14C ages resulting in an age-depth model. The time span covered 49.01 cal ka BP to 32.14 cal ka BP. Based on the thickness of the deposit and the calculated average sedimentation rate, the glacial environment could have been present in the study area prior to the last glacial maximum, in agreement with the Inútil-San Sebastián paleoglacier. Both glaciers flowed from the same mountain ice sheet in the Darwin Cordillera, which makes it possible to infer a different behavior of this ice cap from those of the Patagonian Andes, perhaps forced by different atmospheric dynamics and proximity to the wet and cold subantarctic air masses.

Isla de los Estados is a mountainous island southeast of Tierra del Fuego, in southernmost South America. Its central and eastern parts have an alpine topography, transected by U-shaped valleys, small, partly over-deepened fjords, and a multitude of abandoned cirques, all associated with extensive former local glaciations. Traces of glacial erosion generally reach 400–450 m a.s.l., and above that trimline a distinct sharp-edged nunatak derived landscape is present. The westernmost part of the island has a lower, more subdued topography, reflecting its "softer" geology but possibly also over-running and erosion by mainland-derived ice streams. The present study concentrated on glacigenic sediment sequences exposed along coastal erosional cliffs. A combination of OSL and 14C datings show that these sediments mostly date from the latest (Wisconsinan/Weichselian) glacial cycle, i.e. from the last ca. 100 ka with the oldest (glaciolacustrine) deposits possibly as old as 90–80 ka. The upper parts of overlying tills, with associated lateral and terminal moraines from glaciers that expanded onto an eustatically exposed dry shelf north of the island, date from the last global glacial maximum (LGM). Radiocarbon ages of peat and lake sediments indicate that deglaciation began 17–16 cal ka BP.

Pollen assemblage changes and stable hydrogen isotope analysis of mosses (Sphagnum magellanicum and Drepanocladus s.l.) from a bog in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, provided independent proxies for reconstructing changes in effective moisture and temperature over the past 16,000 cal yr B.P. A deterministic model was used to reconstruct the stable hydrogen isotope composition of meteoric water from the D/H ratios of bog mosses over the last 16,000 years. Abrupt changes in temperature, as recorded in D/H ratios of moss cellulose, were accompanied by synchronous changes in vegetation composition during the late Pleistocene and early and middle Holocene, when moisture levels were lower than today. In contrast, temperature variability during the late Holocene was not accompanied by comparable vegetation changes. In particular, grass pollen (Poaceae) increased during periodic cold spells between 15,000 and 11,000 cal yr B.P., but a cold spell of similar magnitude ca. 2000 cal yr B.P. did not appear to affect vegetation. During the late Pleistocene, the isotopic record from the peat core shows variations similar to the D/H ratios in the Antarctic Taylor Dome ice core. However, the timing of the changes in the Harberton record is more in line with the timing of other Southern Hemisphere records.

A ca. 1400-yr record from a raised bog in Isla Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, registers climate fluctuations, including a Medieval Warm Period, although evidence for the ‘Little Ice Age’ is less clear. Changes in temperature and/or precipitation were inferred from plant macrofossils, pollen, fungal spores, testate amebae, and peat humification. The chronology was established using a 14C wiggle-matching technique that provides improved age control for at least part of the record compared to other sites. These new data are presented and compared with other lines of evidence from the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. A period of low local water tables occurred in the bog between A.D. 960–1020, which may correspond to the Medieval Warm Period date range of A.D. 950–1045 generated from Northern Hemisphere tree-ring data. A period of cooler and/or wetter conditions was detected between ca. A.D. 1030 and 1100 and a later period of cooler/wetter conditions estimated at ca. cal A.D. 1800–1930, which may correspond to a cooling episode inferred from Law Dome, Antarctica.

Tierra del Fuego represents the southernmost limit of human settlement in the Americas. While people may have started to arrive there around 10 500 BP, when it was still connected to the mainland, the main wave of occupation occurred 5000 years later, by which time it had become an island. The co-existence in the area of maritime hunter-gatherers (in canoes) with previous terrestrial occupants pre-echoes the culturally distinctive groups encountered by the first European visitors in the sixteenth century. The study also provides a striking example of interaction across challenging natural barriers.

Aspiciliopsis macrophthalma, Placopsis fusciduloides, P. gelidioides and P. tararuana are reported for the first time from southern South America. New records for 13 species of Placopsis in southern South America are reported, and a revised key to 22 species of Placopsis and A. macrophthalma in the region is given.

Two new species of Mycobilimbia are described and compared with other members of the genus: Mycobilimbia australis Kantvilas & Messuti from austral, cool to cold temperate regions, and Mycobilimbia meridionalis Kantvilas from Tasmania. Two additional, superficially similar species that are widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, M. hypnorum (Lib.) Kalb & Hafellner and Bilimbia lobulata (Sommerf.) Hafellner & Coppins, are recorded from Tasmania for the first time.
