Future communication and radar sensing systems will require synchronization methods which are more versatile in terms of the systems involved in the synchronization process. We present an over-the-air frequency synchronization algorithm based on the standard and the generalized Kuramoto model which uses continuous wave (CW) signals. In contrast to other approaches, all nodes of the network participate equally, and synchronization can even be achieved in presence of a non-cooperative node. By changing the parameters of the radar or by modifying the synchronization algorithm, synchronization accuracy can be adjusted as well. All claims are supported by measurements conducted with CW radars. It will be demonstrated that our algorithm enables synchronization accuracies down to 1.92 ppb and thus could provide sufficient accuracy for velocity measurements on pedestrians.

This article is concerned with the problem of determining an unknown source of non-potential, external time-dependent perturbations of an incompressible fluid from large-scale observations on the flow field. A relaxation-based approach is proposed for accomplishing this, which makes use of a nonlinear property of the equations of motions to asymptotically enslave small scales to large scales. In particular, an algorithm is introduced that systematically produces approximations of the flow field on the unobserved scales in order to generate an approximation to the unknown force; the process is then repeated to generate an improved approximation of the unobserved scales, and so on. A mathematical proof of convergence of this algorithm is established in the context of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions under the assumption that the force belongs to the observational subspace of phase space; at each stage in the algorithm, it is shown that the model error, represented as the difference between the approximating and true force, asymptotically decreases to zero in a geometric fashion provided that sufficiently many scales are observed and certain parameters of the algorithm are appropriately tuned.

We investigate the synchronization of the Eurozone’s government bond yields at different maturities. For this purpose, we combine principal component analysis with random matrix theory. We find that synchronization depends on yield maturity. Short-term yields are not synchronized. Medium- and long-term yields, instead, were highly synchronized early after the introduction of the Euro. Synchronization then decreased significantly during the Great Recession and the European Debt Crisis, to partially recover after 2015. We interpret our empirical results using portfolio theory, and we point to divergence trades as a source of the self-sustained yield asynchronous dynamics. Our results envisage synchronization as a requirement for the smooth transmission of conventional monetary policy in the Eurozone.

A common task in cryo-electron microscopy data processing is to compare three-dimensional density maps of macromolecules. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for aligning three-dimensional density maps, which exploits common lines between projection images of the maps. The algorithm is fully automatic and handles rotations, reflections (handedness), and translations between the maps. In addition, the algorithm is applicable to any type of molecular symmetry without requiring any information regarding the symmetry of the maps. We evaluate our alignment algorithm on publicly available density maps, demonstrating its accuracy and efficiency. The algorithm is available at https://github.com/ShkolniskyLab/emalign.

In this paper we prove a local exponential synchronization for Markovian random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ , providing a new result on stochastic circle dynamics even for $C^1$ -diffeomorphisms. This result is obtained by combining an invariance principle for stationary random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle with a Krylov–Bogolyubov-type result for homogeneous Markov chains.

Artificial insemination protocols depend on efficient behavioral estrus detection and insemination time in Angora goat. Therefore, we aim to determine the accuracy of an estrus scoring system in Angora goats with different PMSG doses during the breeding season. Does (n: 260) were randomly divided into three groups: group-1 (n: 93), group-2 (n: 85) and group-3 (n: 82). All animals received an intravaginal sponge on day 0 for 11 days, and on the day of sponge insertion 150 μg prostaglandin F2Α was administered. Pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin was injected 300, 400 and 500 IU intramuscularly 24 h before sponge removal to groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Estrus signs were detected with a teaser buck, 24 h after sponge removal according to a visual scoring system. Artificial insemination was performed with 0.25 ml fresh diluted semen at 43 to 45 h after sponge removal. Differences were observed within PMSG groups in terms of standing, tail wagging, courtship behavior, vaginal discharge and vaginal hyperemia (P<0.001). Nevertheless, the most accurate indicators of estrus that result in pregnancy were tail wagging and courtship behavior followed by standing estrus (P<0.05). According to the results obtained, 300 IU PMSG dose is sufficient, both to inseminate at a fixed time (43 to 45 h after sponge removal) and to record the estrus behavior by teaser male 24 h after sponge removal. Higher PMSG doses (400 to 500 IU) altered the timing of ovulation; specifically, 500 IU dose shortened the duration of estrus behaviors. In conclusion, even though the different doses of PMSG displayed similar effects on estrus synchronization and pregnancy rates, we concluded that tail wagging, courtship behavior and standing heat are the most reliable estrus signs for artificial insemination in Angora goat.

A high power laser system was used to drive the ignition of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), of which the high energy, the uniform focal spot, the accurate laser waveform, and the synchronization between the laser beams are key parameters. To accomplish this, global laser characteristics control should be assured, which was the main purpose of the injection laser system. In this paper, the key technological progress involved in the improvement of the performance of the injection laser of SG-II is reported, including frequency domain control, time domain control, near-field spatial shaping, pre-amplifier technology, and the optical parametric chirped pulse amplification pump source.

We investigate the state feedback pinning synchronization of fractional-order complex networks. Based on the stability theory of fractional-order differential systems and state feedback control by a single controller, synchronization conditions for fractional-order complex networks are given. We assume that the coupling matrix is irreducible, and provide a numerical example to illustrate the validity of the proposed conclusions.

Cell cycle progression is a question of fundamental biological interest. The coordinated duplication and segregation of all cellular structures and organelles is however an extremely complex process, and one which remains only partially understood even in the most intensively researched model organisms. Trypanosomes are in an unusual position in this respect – they are both outstanding model systems for fundamental questions in eukaryotic cell biology, and pathogens that are the causative agents of three of the neglected tropical diseases. As a failure to successfully complete cell division will be deleterious or lethal, analysis of the cell division cycle is of relevance both to basic biology and drug design efforts. Cell division cycle analysis is however experimentally challenging, as the analysis of phenotypes associated with it remains hypothesis-driven and therefore biased. Current methods of analysis are extremely labour-intensive, and cell synchronization remains difficult and unreliable. Consequently, there exists a need – both in basic and applied trypanosome biology – for a global, unbiased, standardized and high-throughput analysis of cell division cycle progression. In this review, the requirements – both practical and computational – for such a system are considered and compared with existing techniques for cell cycle analysis.

We consider a model of N interacting two-colour Friedman urns. The interaction model considered is such that the reinforcement of each urn depends on the fraction of balls of a particular colour in that urn as well as the overall fraction of balls of that colour in all the urns combined together. We show that the urns synchronize almost surely and that the fraction of balls of each colour converges to the deterministic limit of one-half, which matches with the limit known for a single Friedman urn. Furthermore, we use the notion of stable convergence to obtain limit theorems for fluctuations around the synchronization limit.

We consider a system of urns of Pólya type, containing balls of two colors; the reinforcement of each urn depends on both the content of the urn and the average content of all urns. We show that the urns synchronize almost surely, in the sense that the fraction of balls of a given color converges almost surely as time tends to ∞ to the same limit for all urns. A normal approximation for a large number of urns is also obtained.

Satellite Navigation Systems (SNS) provide Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) services. The SNS is required to maintain its own System Time with high accuracy. To set up the precise System Time, each system component should maintain its own time within a specified limit. In the SNS, the onboard Space Vehicle (SV) time generator is one of the components and it should be set and maintained with few nanoseconds accuracy. To achieve accurate time setting with minimum difference between the ground and onboard SV systems, the onboard time setting should be highly predictable and accurate. This paper proposes an approach to initialize/set the onboard SV Time. The paper also discusses the concept of synchronization of SV Time with System Time with an overall accuracy better than 1 nsec. The proposed technique requires minimum setting time and synchronization steps and there is no need to predict accurate uplink propagation delay and command execution time.

We prove that the first passage time density ρ(t) for an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process X(t) obeying dX = -β Xdt + σdW to reach a fixed threshold θ from a suprathreshold initial condition x0 > θ > 0 has a lower bound of the form ρ(t) > kexp[-pe6βt] for positive constants k and p for times t exceeding some positive value u. We obtain explicit expressions for k, p, and u in terms of β, σ, x0, and θ, and discuss the application of the results to the synchronization of periodically forced stochastic leaky integrate-and-fire model neurons.
