This trial assessed the effect of preemergence herbicides on newly transplanted blackberries. A 2-yr field trial was initiated in 2021 and conducted at two locations in Fayetteville and Clarksville, AR. Seven treatments consisted of six preemergence herbicides (flumioxazin, mesotrione, napropamide, oryzalin, pendimethalin, and S-metolachlor) and one nontreated check. Preemergence herbicide treatments were applied to field plots of newly transplanted blackberry plugs (‘Ouachita’), using a CO2 backpack sprayer at 187 L ha−1 covering a 1-m swath, ensuring spray pattern overlap over newly planted blackberries in 2021 and reapplied in the same manner to established blackberries of the same plots in 2022. Data were collected on crop injury and plant height of blackberry plants in each plot. Yield data were collected in the second year, and fruit were analyzed for soluble solids content, pH, and average berry weight. In the first year, mesotrione and flumioxazin treatments caused injury to newly transplanted blackberries, and mesotrione-treated blackberries (58% in Fayetteville, 29% in Clarksville) did not fully recover by 84 d after treatment (DAT). Napropamide, S-metolachlor, oryzalin, and pendimethalin did not cause crop injury greater than 6% throughout the 2021 season. In the second year (2022), no crop injury was caused by any herbicide treatments. Results from these trials verify that flumioxazin, napropamide, oryzalin, and pendimethalin at the tested rates would be appropriate options for weed control in newly planted blackberries. These results corroborate regional recommendations against the use of mesotrione in first-year blackberry plantings. The findings from this trial indicate that S-metolachlor would be safe for registration for use on blackberries because of its limited effect on crop injury and blackberry yield.

There is limited information on the crop safety and weed control potential of commercially available PRE herbicides when applied under plastic mulch on various cucumber and summer squash cultivars grown in Florida. Two cucumber field trials were conducted at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Wimauma, FL, in fall 2021 and spring 2022 to determine the effects of halosulfuron, pendimethalin, S-metolachlor, sulfentrazone, fomesafen, napropamide, oxyfluorfen, and flumioxazin on crop growth and development, yield, and the control of various weed species in the fields. We conducted this trial using three cucumber cultivars: ‘Speedway’, ‘Dominator’, and ‘Mongoose’. Two summer squash field trials were conducted simultaneously, evaluating all the mentioned herbicides, except flumioxazin, in addition to rimsulfuron on three summer squash cultivars: ‘Spineless Beauty’, ‘Payload’, and ‘Everglade’. In the cucumber trials, crop damage varied with cultivar and ranged from 3% to 16% in fall 2021. All herbicides caused ≥10% crop injury, except oxyfluorfen and flumioxazin, at 28 d after transplanting (DATr) in spring 2022. In the summer squash trial, halosulfuron, S-metolachor, and flumioxazin were the three most injurious PRE herbicides, causing more than 10% crop injury in seed-grown summer squash, with no effect of PRE herbicides on crop injury in transplant-grown summer squash in fall 2021. In spring 2022, crop injury with PRE herbicides varied with cultivar, where pendimethalin and S-metolachlor were consistently the most injurious PRE herbicides, causing 14% to 25% injury at 28 DATr. All PRE herbicides caused some damage to cucumber and summer squash, with limited differences between cultivars and no effect on overall crop yield.

Carolina redroot (LAHTI) is a perennial weed of New Jersey cranberry beds. It is associated with “stand opening” areas that result from fairy ring dieback or other conditions of natural and anthropogenic origin. LAHTI accounts for significant yield reduction through direct competition with cranberry for nutritional resources. Field experiments were conducted from 2017 to 2022 on ‘Ben Lear’ and ‘Early Black’ cranberry beds in Chatsworth, NJ, to determine 1) the efficacy of residual herbicides labeled for use on cranberry, and subsequently, 2) to evaluate the value of overlapping preemergence applications of napropamide and postemergence applications of mesotrione for LAHTI control while minimizing crop phytotoxicity. Treatments in the first experiment included preemergence applications of dichlobenil or norflurazon at 2.2 and 4.5 kg ha−1 and napropamide a 6.7 kg ha−1. In the second trial, napropamide was applied preemergence annually to plots at 6.7 or 10.1 kg ha−1 either as a single or as two equally or unequally split applications spaced 30 d apart, followed by or not followed by mesotrione applied postemergence at 280 g ha−1 when LAHTI leaves emerged above the cranberry canopy. The preemergence herbicides dichlobenil applied at 4.5 kg ha−1 and napropamide provided ≥48% LAHTI control and ≥40% LAHTI biomass reduction 112 d after treatment (DAT), whereas norflurazon had no significant effect on LAHTI biomass. Less than 4% of crop injury and liquid formulation adapted to chemigation identified napropamide as an effective preemergence herbicide for LAHTI control. In the second trial, napropamide applied at 10.1 kg ha−1 followed by an application of mesotrione reduced LAHTI biomass by ≥73%. Splitting napropamide application reduced yield by 36% and berry weight by 12% compared with a single application at the dormant stage. Compared with the nontreated control, a single napropamide application at 10.1 kg ha−1 followed by an application of mesotrione increased yield by 38%. Information derived from these studies is already being used by growers to enhance the productivity and profitability of New Jersey cranberry fields.

In New Mexico chile pepper production, pendimethalin is traditionally applied shortly after crop thinning, which is 9 to 10 wk after crop seeding. Pendimethalin applications before crop thinning may be a method for controlling early-season weeds in chile pepper; however, chile pepper tolerance to early-season applications of pendimethalin is poorly understood. We conducted a greenhouse study to evaluate young chile pepper responses to pendimethalin. We also conducted a field study to determine weed and chile pepper responses to early-season, postemergence-directed pendimethalin in combination with herbicides registered for preemergence applications. The greenhouse study included three treatments administered when chile pepper was at the four-leaf stage: (i) pendimethalin applied to foliage and soil, (ii) pendimethalin applied to soil only, and (iii) a nontreated control. The field study included four treatments: (i) preemergence applications of napropamide followed by postemergence-directed pendimethalin at 5 wk after crop seeding, (ii) preemergence applications of clomazone followed by postemergence-directed pendimethalin at 5 wk after crop seeding, (iii) postemergence-directed pendimethalin without preemergence herbicides, and (iv) nontreated, weed-free control. We conducted the field study at two sites that differed in soil texture. Pendimethalin application rates were maximum labeled rates for the specific soil. Results from the greenhouse study indicated that pendimethalin applied to foliage and soil stunted two of five cultivars, whereas pendimethalin applied to soil did not affect chile pepper height, fresh weight, dry weight, or root area. Results from the field study indicated that postemergence-directed pendimethalin did not affect chile pepper height or fruit yield, or cause visible symptoms of herbicide injury. Postemergence-directed pendimethalin reduced the densities of weeds, including junglerice. The results of this study indicate that postemergence-directed applications of pendimethalin at 5 wk after crop seeding do not cause crop injury or yield loss in chile pepper, while providing some weed control benefits.

Weed management in cantaloupe and other melon crops is important to maximize fruit yield; however, there are few registered herbicides available in California. Several independent herbicide trials were conducted at University of California field stations in Davis (Yolo County), Five Points (Fresno County), and Holtville (Imperial County) from 2013 to 2019 to evaluate both registered and unregistered herbicides and incorporation methods (sprinklers, cultivation, or none) for crop safety and weed control in melons. Although specific treatments varied among locations depending on local practice and research objectives, ethalfluralin and halosulfuron were used in all experiments, and bensulide and S-metolachlor were evaluated in 4 of 6 site-years. Additional herbicides included clethodim, clomazone, DCPA, napropamide, pendimethalin, sethoxydim, and sulfentrazone. Among registered herbicides, halosulfuron, halosulfuron + ethalfluralin, and ethalfluralin + bensulide combinations provided consistently beneficial weed control across all site-years compared to the nontreated control. S-metolachlor performed as well as the best of the registered herbicides tested at each site-year; although moderate injury was noted at the Davis location, this did not reduce melon yield. The method used to incorporate preplant herbicides had a significant impact on weed control efficacy but varied by location. Mechanical incorporation of preplant herbicides resulted in improved weed control and yield compared to sprinklers. Early-season weed control, whether by herbicides or hand weeding, resulted in significant yield increase in most site-years.

Field experiments were conducted from 2017 to 2019 to determine the tolerance of carinata to several preemergence and postemergence herbicides. Preliminary screenings identified herbicides that caused large variation on carinata injury, indicating the potential for selectivity. Dose-response field studies were conducted to quantify the tolerance of carinata to select herbicides. Diuron applied preemergence at rates of 280 g ai ha−1 or higher reduced carinata population density 54% to 84% compared to the nontreated control. In certain locations, clomazone applied preemergence caused minor injury with an acceptable level of carinata tolerance and only doses above 105 g ai ha−1 caused yield reductions. Napropamide doses of 2,856 g ai ha−1 or higher applied preemergence caused at least 25% injury to carinata; however, the damage was not severe enough to reduce yields. Simazine applied postemergence at rates above 1,594 g ai ha−1 caused 50% or more injury, resulting in yield losses ranging from 0% to 95% depending on location. Clopyralid applied postemergence at 2,512 g ai ha−1 caused 25% injury with relative yield reductions, which varied across locations. The present study identified clomazone and napropamide applied preemergence, and clopyralid applied postemergence as potential herbicides for weed control in carinata. In contrast, diuron, simazine, metribuzin, imazethapyr, and chlorimuron caused high levels of carinata mortality and can be used to control volunteer carinata plants in rotational crops.

Field and greenhouse studies were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to determine sweetpotato tolerance to herbicides applied to plant propagation beds. Herbicide treatments included PRE application of flumioxazin (107 g ai ha−1), S-metolachlor (800 g ai ha−1), fomesafen (280 g ai ha−1), flumioxazin plus S-metolachlor (107 g ai ha−1 + 800 g ai ha−1), fomesafen plus S-metolachlor (280 g ai ha−1 + 800 g ai ha−1), fluridone (1,120 or 2,240 g ai ha−1), fluridone plus S-metolachlor (1,120 g ai ha−1 + 800 g ai ha−1), napropamide (1,120 g ai ha−1), clomazone (420 g ai ha−1), linuron (560 g ai ha−1), linuron plus S-metolachlor (560 g ai ha−1 + 800 g ai ha−1), bicyclopyrone (38 or 49.7 g ai ha−1), pyroxasulfone (149 g ai ha−1), pre-mix of flumioxazin plus pyroxasulfone (81.8 g ai ha−1 + 104.2 g ai ha−1), or metribuzin (294 g ai ha−1). Paraquat plus non-ionic surfactant (280 g ai ha−1 + 0.25% v/v) POST was also included. After plants in the propagation bed were cut and sweetpotato slip number, length, and weight had been determined, the slips were then transplanted to containers and placed either in the greenhouse or on an outdoor pad to determine any effects from the herbicide treatments on initial sweetpotato growth. Sweetpotato slip number, length, and/or weight were affected by flumioxazin with or without S-metolachlor, S-metolachlor with or without fomesafen, clomazone, and all fluridone treatments. In the greenhouse studies, initial root growth of plants after transplanting was inhibited by fluridone (1,120 g ai ha−1) and fluridone plus S-metolachlor. However, by 5 wk after transplanting few differences were observed between treatments. Fomesafen, linuron with or without S-metolachlor, bicyclopyrone (38 or 49.7 g ai ha−1), pyroxasulfone with or without flumioxazin, metribuzin, and paraquat did not cause injury to sweetpotato slips in any of the studies conducted.

Preemergence herbicides are typically applied by broadcasting to the top of raised beds before laying the plastic mulch in plasticulture production systems. Broadleaf and grass emergence is limited to transplant holes in the mulch. As a result, most herbicides are applied under the mulch in locations where weeds cannot emerge and herbicides are unnecessary. To reduce this excessive off-target application, a precision hole-punch sprayer was developed at the University of Florida for use in plasticulture production systems. The technology facilitates the application of herbicides during the hole-punch operation immediately before transplant. Application of napropamide and S-metolachlor in an application volume of 233 L ha−1 of water using the precision hole-punch applicator had no effect on tomato and bell pepper growth and yield. Equipment accuracy ranged from 55% to 90%. Preemergence herbicide use was reduced by 88% to 92% with no reduction in weed control. The hole-punch applicator is an effective way to reduce PRE herbicide use in transplant vegetables grown using the plasticulture production system.

Broadleaves, grasses, and nutsedge species are persistent problems with limited management options for strawberry growers in Florida. Field experiments were conducted in 2015-2016 (year 1) and 2016-2017 (year 2) at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm, FL, to evaluate weed control and strawberry tolerance to herbicides applied through the drip irrigation. 2940 g ai ha-1 EPTC, 105 g ai ha-1 flumioxazin, 570 g ai ha-1 fomesafen, 52 g ai ha-1 halosulfuron, 3585 g ai ha-1 napropamide, oxyfluorfen 560 g ai ha-1, and 1070 g ai ha-1S-metolachlor were applied through a single drip tape at 7 or 14 d prior to transplanting. Halosulfuron was the most injurious herbicide, causing 18 and 46% injury at 35 d after transplanting (DATP) in year 1 when the herbicide was applied 7 and 14 d prior to transplanting, respectively. However, strawberry plants recovered from the initial injury and there was no reduction in total berry yield. None of the other herbicides evaluated elicited significant crop injury nor reduced berry yield. Averaged over application timings, EPTC, fomesafen, and napropamide suppressed yellow nutsedge emergence to 49, 64, and 41% of the nontreated control, respectively. Flumioxazin, fomesafen, and halosulfuron suppressed black medic emergence to 55, 52, and 55% of the nontreated control, respectively. None of the herbicides evaluated adequately suppressed Carolina geranium. Overall, results suggest that the evaluated herbicides with the exception of halosulfuron are safe for use on strawberry and would give growers an alternative management option. Drip-applied herbicides permit application closer to the transplant date and would be helpful as part of a weed control program for weed suppression.

Field studies were conducted to determine the influence of herbicides on the development of internal necrosis (IN) in sweetpotato storage roots. In a slip propagation study, herbicide treatments included PRE application (immediately after covering seed roots with soil) of clomazone (0.42, 0.84 kg ai ha-1), flumioxazin (0.11, 0.21 kg ai ha-1), fomesafen (0.28, 0.56 kg ai ha-1), linuron (0.56, 1.12 kg ai ha-1), S-metolachlor (0.8, 1.6 kg ai ha-1), flumioxazin plus S-metolachlor (0.11 + 0.8 or 1.6 kg ha-1), and napropamide (1.12, 2.24 kg ai ha-1), and POST application (2 to 4 wk prior to cutting slips) of ethephon (0.84, 1.26 kg ai ha-1) and paraquat (0.14, 0.28 kg ai ha-1). In a field production study, flumioxazin, fomesafen, linuron, and paraquat were applied PREPLANT (one d prior to sweetpotato transplanting), clomazone, S-metolachlor, and napropamide were applied PRE [4 d after transplanting (DAP)], flumioxazin PREPLANT followed by (fb) S-metolachlor PRE, and ethephon applied POST (2 wk prior to harvest). Herbicide rates were similar to those used in the slip propagation study. Yield of sweetpotato in both studies was not affected by herbicide treatment. In both studies, IN incidence and severity increased with time and was greatest at 60 d after curing. No difference was observed between herbicide treatments for IN incidence and severity in the slip production study which indicates herbicide application at time of slip propagation does not impact the development of IN. In the field production study, the only treatment that increased IN incidence compared to the nontreated was ethephon with 53% and 2.3 incidence and severity, respectively. The presence of IN affected roots in nontreated plots indicates that some other pre- or post-curing factors other than herbicides are responsible for the development of IN. However, the ethephon application prior to sweetpotato root harvest escalates the development of IN.

Bell pepper producers are faced with the challenge of controlling weeds following the phase-out of methyl bromide (MBr). Numerous attempts have been made to find a single fumigant or herbicide to control a broad spectrum of weeds. Adequate weed control in bell pepper will likely require weed management systems utilizing both fumigant and herbicide options. A weed management system including the fumigant dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) plus chloropicrin (Pic) plus the herbicide napropamide prior to transplant followed by S-metolachlor POST may be necessary to replace MBr. Field experiments were conducted during 2010 and 2011 near Ty Ty, Georgia to determine bell pepper and weed response to DMDS plus Pic or in systems with napropamide and/or S-metolachlor. Bell pepper were not significantly injured by DMDS plus Pic or napropamide. Injury caused by S-metolachlor was transient and plants fully recovered by 4 weeks after treatment (WAT). Yellow nutsedge control 6 WAT using DMDS plus Pic applied at 468 or 560 L ha−1 controlled yellow nutsedge 91 to 95%. Large crabgrass control 6 WAT was 92 to 100% when DMDS plus Pic was applied at 468 or 560 L ha−1 with or without a(n) herbicide (S-metolachlor or napropamide). Palmer Amaranth control prior to harvest was 21, 64, and 85% using DMDS plus Pic at 374, 468, or 560 L ha−1, respectively. DMDS plus Pic applied at 468 or 560 L ha-1 with napropamide followed by S-metolachlor POST gave 95 to 99% control of Palmer amaranth 6 WAT. Consistent weed control and optimum yields were obtained when DMDS plus Pic was used at 468 L ha−1 plus napropamide beneath plastic mulch followed by S-metolachlor POST.

To evaluate the weed control provided by various combinations of PRE applications of napropamide (Nap) and POST applications of mesotrione (Mes) in newly planted and 1-yr-old cranberry vines, six 2-yr experiments were conducted during 2009-2012. Three sites were treated in the year of planting plus the subsequent year (called “new plantings”) and three sites were treated in their second year of growth plus the subsequent year (called “second-year plantings”). Ten treatments, delivered in 3,735 L ha−1 water, were administered each year: Nap at 3.36 kg ai ha−1 applied once, twice, thrice or once followed by (fb) one application of Mes at 210 g ai ha−1; Nap at 5.04 kg ha−1applied once, twice or once fb one application of Mes at 210 g ha−1; Mes at 210 g ha−1 applied once or twice; and nontreated. At new planting sites, plots receiving treatments other than a single Nap application had less total weed biomass compared to nontreated plots. At second-year plantings, all herbicide-treated plots had less total weed biomass than nontreated plots; in addition, plots receiving Mes-only treatments had less total weed biomass than Nap-only treatments. Correlation analysis indicated that monocot biomass production was the primary positive predictor for total weed biomass. Herbicides did not adversely affect cranberry biomass production but overall vine colonization was poor for four of the six sites indicating that other factors, including cultivar choice, planting method, and water management, may play a larger role in rapid cranberry vine colonization than the suppression of initial weed biomass. Given the complementary range of efficacy for Nap and Mes, a combination PRE-POST herbicide program of a low rate of Nap fb Mes may be the most cost-beneficial program in many instances. If cost is a limiting factor, applying a single application of Mes to a new planting should be included as a component of cranberry bed establishment since this practice consistently resulted in significantly less initial weed biomass compared to areas left nontreated.

In field experiments, preemergence applications of bensulide {O,O-bis(1-methylethyl)S-[2-[(phenylsulfonyl)amino] ethyl] phosphorodithioate} or DCPA (dimethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) at 11.2 kg ai/ha controlled smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb. ex Schweig.)Schreb. ex Muhl. #3 DIGIS] selectively in turf. Granular and liquid formulations of bensulide performed similarly. Napropamide [N,N-diethyl-2-(1-naphthalenyloxy)propanamide] granules when applied alone at 1.1 to 3.4 kg ai/ha were partially effective, but when combined with 5.6 kg ai/ha bensulide, controlled smooth crabgrass for the entire season. Oxadiazon {3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one} controlled crabgrass but temporarily injured the turf. Residual control of crabgrass the year after treatment was unacceptable for all treatments.

Diuron, fluorochloridone, hexazinone, metribuzin, norflurazon, oryzalin, prodiamine, simazine, and terbacil controlled seedling asparagus planted in sprinkler-irrigated plots similarly (>89%). In furrow-irrigated plots, cinmethylin, diuron, fluorochloridone, hexazinone, napropamide, oryzalin, and prodiamine provided similar control (>86%) of planted seedling asparagus. Herbicides with high water solubilities that depended upon root uptake for maximum activity tended to control seedling asparagus better in sprinkler-irrigated tests than in furrow-irrigated tests. Fluorochloridone, norflurazon, and prodiamine provided partial control of volunteer asparagus (48 to 84%) in an established stand of furrow-irrigated asparagus.

Broadleaf weed control and tulip, daffodil, and iris response to alachlor, dithiopyr, diuron, isoxaben, napropamide, oryzalin, oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, pronamide, and thiazopyr applied preemergence were evaluated. All herbicides controlled broadleaf weeds for five months after application, but control with oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, alachlor, pronamide, and napropamide decreased six months after application. The greatest weed control was with oxadiazon, isoxaben, thiazopyr, dithiopyr, and diuron, whereas the least weed control was with napropamide and alachlor. In general, tulip was more sensitive to herbicides than daffodil and iris. All herbicides injured tulips at early growth stages but bulb yield of tulip was reduced only by oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen at 0.28 kg ai/ha, pronamide, and dithiopyr. Tulip flower quality was reduced only by oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen at 0.28 lb/ha, and pronamide. Daffodil and iris were tolerant to thiazopyr, isoxaben, pronamide, alachlor, oryzalin, napropamide, and diuron.

Herbicides were evaluated alone, in combinations, or as sequential treatments on direct-seeded tomato each year from 1982 through 1984. Diphenamid at 4.5 kg ai/ha or napropamide at 1.1 to 2.2 kg ai/ha alone are registered but frequently do not control weeds adequately, particularly when yellow nutsedge and/or Florida pusley is common. Combinations or sequential treatments are necessary to overcome these weed problems in cropping systems. Metolachlor at 0.8 to 3.4 kg ai/ha injured direct-seeded tomato in proportion to the rate applied. Pendimethalin at 0.6 kg ai/ha also injured tomatoes. Fluazifop at 0.3 to 0.6 kg ae/ha and sethoxydim at 0.2 to 0.5 kg ai/ha effectively controlled annual grasses without injuring tomato seedlings. These herbicides would reduce competition and would increase harvesting efficiency where grass weeds are a problem.

Herbicides were applied annually in March or March plus August to bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. Tifdwarf’] putting greens for 6 yr. Bensulide [O,O-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] delayed early spring growth of bermudagrass less than the other herbicides, but did not adversely affect turf quality during the growing season. Oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-Δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] treatments applied twice each year severely retarded turf growth and reduced the quality and stand of bermudagrass. Napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N, N-diethylpropionamide] and prosulfalin {N-[[4-dipropylamino)-3,5-dinitrophenyl] sulfonyl]-S,S-dimethylsulfilimine} treatments reduced root growth of bermudagrass.

The objective of this investigation was to determine if preemergence herbicides, applied at the standard rates and times for smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl. ♯ DIGIS] control, would provide season-long control of goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. ♯ ELEIN] in the transition zone. The transition zone is a unique area of turfgrass culture between cool and warm regions where quality of turfgrasses frequently declines due to environmental stresses. Single and sequential applications of bensulide [O,O-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] and DCPA (dimethyltetrachloroterephthalate) did not effectively control goosegrass in any of the three test years. Benefin (N-butyl-N-ethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-p-toluidine) usually required sequential dosages to provide good (90%) to excellent (95%) goosegrass control. Nearly all rates of oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] used provided good to excellent goosegrass control. Napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N,N-diethylpropionamide] plus bensulide provided excellent goosegrass control in 1981, but not in 1982. Pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] also provided effective goosegrass control.

Studies determined the effect of common lambsquarters, goosegrass, and a mixture of these on ‘Beauregard’ and ‘Jewel’ sweetpotato transplant production with or without polyethylene bed covers. Effects of herbicides on Beauregard in propagation beds were also studied. Black and infrared transmissible (IRT) plastic covers gave near 100% control of goosegrass and common lambsquarters, resulting in the greatest number and weight of Jewel transplants per plot. Common lambsquarters reduced transplant number and weight per plot with Jewel under clear plastic covers when compared with black and IRT plastic covers. Beauregard transplant number was not affected by row cover treatment. However, with data combined over all covers, Beauregard transplant weight per plot was lowest for treatments with weeds compared to weed-free plots. With the exception of DCPA, no significant (10% or greater) injury to Beauregard was observed with diphenamid, napropamide, chloramben, or chloramben plus fluazifop.

Tolerance of direct-seeded pepper under clear plastic mulch to herbicides applied pre- and post-emergence was investigated in 1991 and 1992. Weed control of herbicides applied preemergence was also studied. Paprika cultivar ‘Buketen’ and canning cultivars ‘Piquillo de Lodosa’ and ‘Pico de Mendavia’ were seeded in the field in Zaragoza, Spain, in a loamy soil. Percent emergence, plant mortality after the postemergence treatment, dry weight of plants, and fruit weight were recorded. Pepper was tolerant to diphenamid and napropamide applied preemergence but these herbicides did not control broadleaf weeds. Clomazone, when applied preemergence resulted in chlorotic seedlings and at 2 kg ai/ha reduced the final stand, but was selective when applied at the 6 to 8-leaf stage of the crop. Pepper was tolerant to diethatyl-ethyl when applied preemergence. However, diethatyl-ethyl applied postemergence caused severe phytotoxicity symptoms, and when mixed with diphenamid, fruit ripeness in 1992 was delayed. Weed control during the crop emergence period was better when diethatyl-ethyl was used mixed with diphenamid or napropamide.
