Japanese stiltgrass is regarded as one of the most troublesome invasive species in the United States. It is commonly found invading forested areas; however, more recently it has been noted to be invading golf course roughs and out-of-play areas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate POST herbicide control of Japanese stiltgrass in golf course and highly maintained turfgrass facilities. None of the treatments provided >80% Japanese stiltgrass control 2 wk after treatment (WAT). At 4 WAT >80% Japanese stiltgrass control was observed with MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim, whereas metsulfuron, pinoxaden, and imazapic provided minimum control. By 8 WAT, MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim provided >98% control, whereas quinclorac, metsulfuron, pinoxaden, and imazapic provided no visible control. Thiencarbazone-methyl + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron-methyl, and sulfentrazone provided limited (≤60%) control. This study indicates that POST control of Japanese stiltgrass can be achieved with MSMA, MSMA + metribuzin, amicarbazone, and sethoxydim. Future research should include long-term control over multiple growing seasons, repeat applications of herbicides, and evaluation of herbicides in combination for increased and longer-term Japanese stiltgrass control.

Reductions in MSMA use for weed control in turfgrass systems may have led to increased common carpetgrass infestations. The objective of our research was to identify alternative POST herbicides for control of common carpetgrass using field and controlled-environment experiments. Field applications of MSMA (2.2 kg ai ha−1) and thiencarbazone + iodosulfuron + dicamba (TID) (0.171 kg ai ha−1) resulted in the greatest common carpetgrass control 8 wk after initial treatment (WAIT): 94% and 91%, respectively. Thiencarbazone + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron (TFH) (0.127 kg ai ha−1) applied in the field resulted in 77% control 8 WAIT, whereas all other treatments were ≤19% effective at 8 WAIT. All treatments resulted in greater common carpetgrass control when applied in the greenhouse. Applications of MSMA, TFH, and TID resulted in the highest common carpetgrass control in the greenhouse 8 WAIT: 94%, 94%, and 91%, respectively. Control with nicosulfuron (0.035 kg ai ha−1) and trifloxysulfuron (0.028 kg ai ha−1) (81% and 75%, respectively) was greater in the greenhouse than observed in the field 8 WAIT. Sequential applications of foramsulfuron (0.058 kg ai ha−1) resulted in only ≤11% common carpetgrass control 8 WAIT, regardless of application site. All herbicide treatments in the greenhouse resulted in reduced aboveground common carpetgrass biomass 8 WAIT compared to the nontreated control (12.9 g). Aboveground biomasses of common carpetgrass in response to MSMA, TID, TFH, nicosulfuron, and trifloxysulfuron were 1.6 to 2.1 g, regardless of treatment. Reduced efficacy of foramsulfuron was reflected in greater biomass (4.7 g) in response to treatments. Thiencarbazone + iodosulfuron + dicamba may be an alternative to MSMA for common carpetgrass control; however, long-term assessment may be warranted to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Further investigation into application timing may be necessary to enhance the efficacy of TFH for the control of common carpetgrass.

Doveweed is a problematic weed of lawns and sod production, as well as golf course roughs, fairways, and tees. End-user reports of selective POST control options are inconsistent and control is often short-lived. In addition, inconsistent control with non-selective herbicides such as glyphosate is common. The goals of this research were: (1) evaluate selective POST doveweed control options in ‘Tifway’ hybrid bermudagrass turf; (2) compare efficacy of single vs. sequential applications of selective POST herbicides; (3) quantify doveweed tolerance to glyphosate; and (4) quantify recovery of foliar applied glyphosate following treatment with a C14-glyphosate solution. A single application of sulfentrazone+metsulfuron; thiencarbazone+iodosulfuron+dicamba or 2,4-D+MCPP+dicamba+carfentrazone; or thiencarbazone+foramsulfuron+halosulfuron provided >60% control 2 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT). A second application of these treatments 3 WAIT improved control 6 WAIT. Two applications of 2,4-D+MCPP+dicamba+carfentrazone or thiencarbazone+foramsulfuron+halosulfuron provided ~80% control 6 WAIT. Doveweed was tolerant to glyphosate application up to 5.68 kgaeha-1. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate was compared between doveweed with cuticle intact, doveweed with a disturbed cuticle, and smooth crabgrass. 14C-glyphosate recovery from the leaf surface of doveweed plants with an intact cuticle was 93.6%. In comparison, 14C-glyphosate recovery from the leaf surface of doveweed plants with a disrupted cuticle and the leaf surface of crabgrass plants was 79.1 and 70.5%, respectively.

Experiments were conducted to compare control of entireleaf morningglory with POST applications of DPX-PE350 applied with no adjuvant, a nonionic surfactant, or crop oil concentrate in spray volumes of 94, 235, and 375 L ha−1. Control was greater with a nonionic surfactant or crop oil concentrate than with no adjuvant and control with crop oil concentrate exceeded control with the nonionic surfactant. Spray volume had no effect on efficacy. DPX-PE350 was more effective when applied to foliage only or to soil plus foliage than when applied to soil only after emergence of entireleaf morningglory. Control from soil-only applications was lower on a silty clay soil than on a silt loam soil. Except for sicklepod, mixing DPX-PE350 with fluometuron or MSMA had little effect on weed control.

Torpedograss has invaded fine turfgrasses in the Southern U.S. due to its tolerance to most commonly used turfgrass herbicides. Research was conducted to determine torpedograss and ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass tolerance to quinclorac and tank-mix combinations with other turf herbicides. Quinclorac rates in excess of 2.2 kg ai/ha were required for control (≥ 80%) of torpedograss. Sequential applications were more effective than single applications. Generally, sequential applications made 3 wk after the initial were more effective than delaying sequential applications until 4 wk after the initial application. Tifway bermudagrass injury from quinclorac applied at 4.5 kg/ha, or at 2.2 kg/ha followed by a sequential application of 1.1 or 2.2 kg/ha, was observed at 4 to 10 wk; however, turf recovered thereafter. Sequential applications of quinclorac plus imazaquin (1.1 + 0.6 kg/ha) increased torpedograss control (approximate 35%) as compared to quinclorac plus MSMA (1.1 + 1.1 kg/ha) but also decreased turf quality versus quinclorac applied alone or in combination with MSMA. Quinclorac applied at 2.2 kg/ha followed by 1.1 kg/ha applied 3 or 6 wk after the initial controlled torpedograss best with least reduction in bermudagrass quality. Quinclorac is the first herbicide reported to selectively control torpedograss in bermudagrass turf.

Methazole [2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-l,2,4-oxadiazolidine-3,5-dione], metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one], and combinations of MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) with either methazole or metribuzin were applied to bare ground at 0, 1, 2, and 4 weeks before planting with bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ‘Common’] as sprigs, stolons, and seed. In most instances, the growth of newly planted bermudagrass was as good or better from combination of MSMA (2.2 kg/ha) with either methazole or metribuzin at 0.1 kg/ha than with methazole or metribuzin applied alone at higher rates. MSMA + methazole can be applied safely on day of planting with sprigs and seed, but a 1-week interval between treatment and planting was needed with stolons in 1 of 2 yr. The MSMA + metribuzin combination can also be applied safely to sprigged bermudagrass on day of planting, but a 1-week interval was needed between treatment and planting with stolons and a 2-week interval between treatment and planting with seed to insure minimum bermudagrass injury.

Four cropping systems were evaluated from 1975 to 1977 for the control of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.). Crops grown in 1975 and 1976 included alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Elcamino WL-600′), barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘CM-67′), corn (Zea mays L. ‘Dekalb T214′), and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Acala SJ-2′). Herbicides used included butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) in corn, EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) in alfalfa, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in fallow plots, and MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) in cotton. Cotton, which was grown continuously as one of the four cropping systems, was the only crop grown in 1977. Based on weed counts, crop yields, and the consistent decline in the number of tubers, all cropping systems provided substantial control of yellow nutsedge each year. Two years of either alfalfa treated with EPTC or double cropping barley with corn treated with butylate preceeding cotton reduced the number of viable yellow nutsedge tubers by 96%. Two years of chemically fallowing plots with glyphosate following barley and preceeding cotton was 98% effective in reducing viable tubers. Treating continuous cotton with MSMA, although somewhat inferior to the above systems, reduced the number of viable nutsedge tubers by 91% in 3 yr.

Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to determine if the sodium salt of pyrithiobac or bromoxynil applied in a low-volume, air-assist spray system controlled entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and smallflower morningglory as well as treatments applied with a conventional hydraulic fan spraying system, and to determine if herbicide rates could be reduced when using the low-volume spraying system. Pyrithiobac at 0.035 and 0.071 kg ai/ha and bromoxynil at 0.56 and 1.12 kg ai/ha were applied alone and in combination with DSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha or MSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha. Spraying systems were calibrated to deliver 26 L/ha and 140 L/ha for the low-volume and conventional systems, respectively. No significant differences in control were noted between low-volume and conventional spray systems when herbicides were applied at the suggested use rates of 0.071 and 1.12 kg ai/ha for pyrithiobac and bromoxynil, respectively. Morningglory control was reduced when pyrithiobac and bromoxynil were applied at one-half the suggested use rate regardless of the spraying systems. Bromoxynil alone generally controlled pitted and entireleaf morningglory better than pyrithiobac alone regardless of rate and application method. However, pyrithiobac generally provided better control of smallflower morningglory than bromoxynil. Adding MSMA or DSMA to bromoxynil and pyrithiobac increased control of both weed species.

Four-year cropping sequences of continuous cotton, cotton-soybeans-soybeans-cotton, continuous soybeans, soybeans-grain sorghum-soybeans-grain sorghum, and cotton-rice-cotton-rice were treated each year with high and low levels of herbicides to control johnsongrass. High levels of herbicide were necessary to control johnsongrass in continuous cotton, cotton-soybeans-soybeans-cotton, continuous soybeans, and the soybeans-grain sorghum rotation. Johnsongrass was not eradicated, however, after 4 years of cropping sequences with high herbicide inputs. Both low and high levels of herbicide coupled with water management required for rice production controlled johnsongrass and prevented rice yield reductions.

Thiazopyr at 0.14, 0.28, and 0.42 kg ai/ha and pendimethalin at 1.1 kg ai/ha applied preemergence (PRE) were compared as components in weed management systems for no-till cotton. Mid- and late-season control of mixtures of large crabgrass, goosegrass, and fall panicum by thiazopyr at 0.28 kg/ha was 89 to 97% and 11 to 50%, respectively, compared with 11 to 38% midseason and 0 to 5% late-season control by pendimethalin. Thiazopyr at 0.42 kg/ha and pendimethalin controlled broadleaf signalgrass 44 and 0%, respectively, late in the season. Adding fluometuron PRE at 1.7 kg ai/ha had little to no effect on large crabgrass, goosegrass, and fall panicum control but increased broadleaf signalgrass control 47 to 79 percentage points compared with thiazopyr or pendimethalin alone. Late-season control of annual grasses by thiazopyr or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE followed by methazole plus MSMA early postemergence (POST)-directed and cyanazine plus MSMA late POST-directed was at least 95% at two locations and 80% at the third location. Common lambsquarters was controlled 54 and 95% in systems without and with fluometuron PRE, respectively. Acceptable control of ivyleaf, pitted, and tall morningglories at all locations and smooth pigweed at two of three locations was achieved only in systems with POST-directed herbicides. Adding POST-directed herbicides to systems with thiazopyr or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE increased cotton yield at two of three locations. Treatments had no effect on fiber quality.

An experiment was conducted at four locations in North Carolina during 1994 and 1995 to evaluate weed control, cotton yield, fiber quality, and net returns in no-tillage bromoxynil-tolerant cotton. The experiment focused on using bromoxynil or pyrithiobac sodium applied early POST over-the-top as alternatives to fluometuron plus MSMA applied early POST directed. Fluometuron plus MSMA was more effective than bromoxynil or pyrithiobac sodium on tall morningglory, large crabgrass, goosegrass, and broadleaf signalgrass. Bromoxynil and fluometuron plus MSMA were similarly effective on common lambsquarters, common ragweed, and eclipta and more effective than pyrithiobac sodium. Pyrithiobac sodium and fluometuron plus MSMA were similarly effective on smooth pigweed and Palmer amaranth and more effective than bromoxynil. Prickly sida control by bromoxynil and pyrithiobac sodium was equal to or greater than control by fluometuron plus MSMA. All early POST herbicides controlled pitted morningglory similarly. Regardless of the early POST herbicides used, fluometuron applied PRE and cyanazine plus MSMA applied late POST directed increased control of most weeds and increased cotton yield and net returns. Bromoxynil and pyrithiobac sodium effectively substituted for fluometuron plus MSMA only in systems that included fluometuron applied PRE and cyanazine plus MSMA applied late POST directed. Effects of herbicide systems on cotton fiber quality were minor.

Dalapon (2,2-dichloropropionic acid), TCA ester [ethyleneglycol bis(trichloroacetate)], MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate), and glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] were evaluated for their effectiveness as spot spray treatments to johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] 30, 75, or 100 cm tall from rhizomes. Glyphosate was also applied as a spot spray to soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Pickett 71′] to determine its effect on stand losses and subsequent soybean yields. Glyphosate at a concentration of 6 or 12 g/L of water was the most effective treatment regardless of johnsongrass height. A single application provided excellent-to-complete seasonal control within 2 weeks after application. Repeated applications of dalapon, MSMA, and TCA ester would be needed for season-long control. Glyphosate at a concentration of 6 g/L of water applied to 0.5 m long spots of soybeans in late August reduced soybean yields 9, 17, and 28% while the stand was reduced 5,10, and 20%, respectively.

Experiments were conducted in Massachusetts and New York to evaluate the potential influence of plant growth stage, spray volume, nozzle type, additional surfactant, and herbicide formulation on smooth and large crabgrass control in turf with fenoxaprop. At a well-watered site, crabgrass control with fenoxaprop was equal to or greater than with MSMA. On an irrigated, fertilized site, crabgrass growth stage did not influence fenoxaprop efficacy. Excellent control of up to 5-tiller smooth crabgrass was obtained with 0.20 kg/ha of fenoxaprop. On nonirrigated turf, fenoxaprop was less effective on tillered crabgrass than on 2- to 5-leaf weeds. Under very dry conditions, fenoxaprop was ineffective regardless of growth stage. Control with MSMA was less affected by drought than was fenoxaprop. Spray volumes, between 140 and 1120 L/ha, did not affect fenoxaprop efficacy; however, high volume applications (1120 L/ha) with floodjet nozzles were less effective than flat fan nozzle treatments in two of three tests. Added surfactant did not improve efficacy except with floodjet nozzles on a droughty site. No differences were observed between the water-based and the emulsifiable concentrate formulations of fenoxaprop. Fenoxaprop caused temporary phytotoxicity (≤20% reduction in turf quality) to established Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.

Bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ‘Tifway’] injured by MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) plus metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] or 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] plus mecoprop {2-[(4-chloro-o-tolyl)oxy] propionic acid} plus dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid) recovered more rapidly when nitrogen (N) was applied in sequence with the herbicides than when no N was applied. Bermudagrass recovery was faster with less injury within 2 weeks after herbicide treatment when N was applied at the first MSMA plus metribuzin treatment or when N was applied at 2 weeks after the first 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba treatment. Turf quality at 4 weeks or later was consistently as good or better in plots where N was applied at 2 weeks after the first application of either herbicide combination than when N was applied earlier.

The presence of a common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L. # XANST) population resistant to organic arsenical herbicides was confirmed in three adjoining counties of South Carolina's ten-county cotton-growing region, but little evidence of resistance was found in the remaining seven counties. This population was resistant to both disodium salt of methylarsonic acid (DSMA) and monosodium salt of methylarsonic acid (MSMA) but not to herbicides from nine other chemical groups. A much greater level of resistance was apparent in the field than under greenhouse conditions and larger plants were more resistant than small plants.

Field experiments were established to evaluate coffee senna control in cotton with registered PRE, early POST-directed (EPD), and late POST-directed (LPD) herbicides and with pyrithiobac applied PRE and early POST. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE controlled coffee senna 87 and 65%, respectively, 6 wk after planting (WAP). Methazole applied EPD controlled coffee senna 96% 2 wk after application, whereas fluometuron and MSMA applied EPD controlled 70 and 16%, respectively. LPD applications of cyanazine, diuron, and prometryn averaged only 45% control 8 WAP. MSMA applied LPD controlled coffee senna only 12%. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE followed by methazole applied EPD and cyanazine applied LPD controlled coffee senna 98 and 99% 6 WAP, respectively. PRE, early POST, and PRE followed by early POST applications of pyrithiobac controlled coffee senna 88, 89, and 95% 6 WAP, respectively. Seed cotton yields were similar to weed-free cotton with all treatments except MSMA applied EPD and the LPD treatments, all of which provided unacceptable (12 to 49%) control 8 WAP.

Wild oat (Avena fatua L. ♯3 AVEFA) and Avena sterilis L. ♯ AVEST accessions from the United States were screened for tolerance to diallate [S-(2,3-dichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], barban (4-chloro-2-butynyl m-chlorocarbanilate), diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid}, difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium), flamprop [N-benzoyl-N-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-DL-alanine], and MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate). Some accessions were tolerant to more than one herbicide but none were tolerant to all herbicides. Tolerance to a herbicide was not restricted to certain areas of origin of the accessions, and tolerant accessions occurred even in locations that had not been treated previously with the herbicide. In general, accessions from Southern California and Arizona were shorter, produced more tillers, and required the least number of days to panicle emergence. However, accessions from within individual areas were nearly as variable in these characteristics as the entire 1200 accessions. Tolerance of accessions to flamprop, difenzoquat, MSMA, and diclofop was not due to low leaf surface area, since the tolerant accessions usually had the most leaf surface area. All the accessions tolerant to difenzoquat, MSMA, and flamprop, and three of the four accessions tolerant to diclofop, tillered less than the susceptible accessions.

Oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] applied early enough for large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control provided full season goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.] control during bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ‘Midiron’ and ‘Tufcoat’] establishment from sod strips. Prosulfalin {N-[[4-(dipropylamino)-3,5-dinitrophenyl]sulfonyl]-S,S-dimethylsulfilimine}, DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate), pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] and bensulide [0,0-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] gave full season goosegrass control in well-established Midiron bermudagrass, but not during the initial establishment period where open bare soil was present. Napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N,N-diethylpropionamide] provided long term residual control of goosegrass with some interference with rooting of bermudagrass from stolon nodes. Winter survival of Midiron bermudagrass was superior to Tufcoat bermudagrass. Controlling annual grasses permitted superior bermudagrass growth, and winter survival was improved tremendously. Postemergence goosegrass control was obtained with MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) and methazole [2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolidine-3,5-dione] when repeated several times during the season. A mixture of MSMA and methazole was superior to either used alone. The rate of bermudagrass establishment was increased through the control of goosegrass with herbicides.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to evaluate herbicidal efficacy on tropical soda apple and bahiagrass. Acifluorfen, clopyralid, dicamba, fluroxypyr, picloram, and triclopyr were the most effective postemergence herbicides, providing > 90% control of tropical soda apple plants with no injury to bahiagrass 145 days after treatment (DAT). Glyphosate and imazapyr resulted in effective (> 90%) control of both seedling and mature tropical soda apple plants. However, these herbicides caused severe (> 90%) damage to bahiagrass. Control of tropical soda apple with 2,4-D, AC-263,222, diuron, fomesafen, lactofen, MSMA, sulfometuron, and triasulfuron was unacceptable (> 90%).

Weed control and cotton yield with a herbicide program of sethoxydim and DPX-PE350 applied postemergence over-the-top was compared with that of a standard herbicide program of trifluralin applied PPI plus fluometuron applied PRE plus methazole and MSMA applied postemergence-directed. Control of pitted and entireleaf morningglory, smooth pigweed, and prickly sida was similar with the postemergence over-the-top program and the standard herbicide program when DPX-PE350 was applied to cotton in the V2 or V4 growth stages. Less weed control and lower yield were observed when DPX-PE350 was applied to V6-stage cotton. Good control of annual grasses was obtained with all herbicide programs.
