The diffusion of water in the title intercalate has been measured by quasielastic neutron scattering. The diffusion coefficient (6.1 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 at 23.5°C) is one order less than that found previously for a sodium-exchanged montmorillonite which, however, contained 4 times as much water in the interlamellar space. The activation energy for the motion has been deduced to be 18 kJ mol−1. Also it has been demonstrated that upon the time scale of the neutron scattering events (faster than 10−9 s) the hydroxyl groups of the clay lattice are not in motion.

The recent determination of the three-dimensional crystal structure of a dickite:formamide intercalate allows insight into the clay:organic bonding schemes of amides and other small organic molecule intercalates of the kaolin minerals. It is demonstrated that the observed basal spacings of intercalates with these molecules are consistent with hydrogen bonding schemes in which, if possible, triple hydrogen bonds from the clay hydroxyls to 0=C< are formed. Variations in basal spacing within a series of amides can be explained by considering the maximization of hydrogen bonding while avoiding close van der Waals contacts.

The thermal decomposition of the kaolinite: N-methylformamide intercalate [Al2Si2O5(OH)4·HCONHCH3] has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The decomposition starts at 355 K, finishes at 450 K and follows Avrami-Erofeev kinetics for α = 0.04–0.96. ΔH for the loss of organic is 19 ± 2 kJ mol−1; the activation energy for the reaction is 30 ± 3 kJ mol−1.

The rates of dehydroxylation of smectites intercalated with the decomposition products of Ni(phen)3SO4 are from 2 to 4 times greater than those of clays without the heat-stable intercalate. These results suggest that the intercalated material, in keeping the clay sheets separated, provides a more ready avenue for water loss during the dehydroxylation process.

Intercalates of Georgia well-crystallized kaolinite with formamide, N-methylformamide (NMF), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were prepared at room temperature by dispersing the clay in the organic liquid. Several physical and chemical properties of the intercalated organic molecules and the clay, while intercalated and after de-intercalation, were examined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), and specific heat (Cp) measurements. The chemical bonding between the inner-surface hydroxyls and the organic molecules, as indicated by IR, was strongest for DMSO and weakest for formamide. The distortion of the kaolinite layer, as shown by EPR, also was greatest for DMSO and least for formamide. NMR T1 measurements indicated a relatively strong DMSO-kaolinite surface interaction that slowed down the methyl group reorientation comparable to that in bulk solid DMSO. T1 measurements indicated a weaker interaction for NMF. De-intercalation by mild heating did not return the kaolinite to its original structural state as shown by EPR and Cp. The greatest disorder was found for the DMSO de-intercalate and the least for the formamide de-intercalate. These experiments show that for sufficiently strong bonding between the clay inner surface and the intercalating molecule, the structure of the clay is capable of distortion, which is partly temporary and partly permanent. The permanent changes probably involve the introduction of stacking faults.

1-4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane dihydrochloride (DABCO·2HC1) was reacted with two vermic-ulite samples to produce intercalates which, at room temperature, had relatively sharp, single crystal X-ray diffraction patterns. At higher temperatures (250°C) the stacking order decreased, and consequently the 0kl reflections with k ≠ 3n became increasingly diffuse. The stacking order of previously heated samples returned when they were cooled. A superstructure was present in which DABCO cations occupied the corners and center of a cell 3a × b, compared with the standard vermiculite cell.

DABCO-intercalated Nyasaland vermiculite had the following monoclinic subcell (symmetry C1) parameters under ambient conditions: a = 5.341(2), b = 9.249(3), c = 14.50(1) Å, and ß = 96.98(5)°. Differential Fourier analyses and least-squares refinement led to a final R value of 12.6% for 1814 reflections. The crystal structure analysis showed that individual DABCO ions were not symmetrically positioned between the silicate layers. A network of inorganic cations and water molecules was also present and governed the interlayer separation. At 250°C the d value was 13.7 Å, consistent with a dehydrated structure, in which each organic pillar has one amino group keyed into a ditrigonal cavity and the other amino group riding on the basal oxygens of an opposite tetrahedron.

13C and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with magic-angle spinning bas been used to study the short-range ordering and bonding in the structures of intercalates of kaolinite with formamide, hydrazine, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and pyridine-N-oxide (PNO). The 29Si chemical shift indicated decreasing levels of bonding interaction between the silicate layer and the intercalate in the order: kaolinite: formamide (δ) = -91.9, ppm relative to tetramethylsilane), kaolinite: hydrazine (-92.0), kaolinite: DMSO (-93.1). The 29Si signal of the kaolinite:PNO intercalate (-92.1) was unexpectedly deshielded, possibly due to the aromatic nature of PNO. The degree of three-dimensional ordering of the structures was inferred from the 29Si signal width, with the kaolinite: DMSO intercalate displaying the greatest ordering and kaolinite: hydrazine the least. 13C resonances of intercalating organic molecules were shifted downfield by as much as 3 ppm in response to increased hydrogen bonding after intercalation, and in the kaolinite: DMSO intercalate the two methyl-carbon chemical environments were non-equivalent (δ = 43.7 and 42.5).

If anilinium ions are intercalated into Llano vermiculite, the stacking order of adjacent silicate layers is increased, resulting in a relatively sharp single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The packing of intercalated organic members forms a superstructure and produces bonding from layer to layer which favors the stacking order. Superlattice reflections occur which, although sharp in the a*b* plane, are streaked along c*. Apparently there is little coherence between adjacent layers of ordered organic units.

A three-dimensional set of XRD reflections for a triclinic sub-cell having the following lattice parameters was measured: a = 5.326(3), b = 9.264(4), c = 14.82(5) Å, α = 90.31(7), β = 96.70(6), and γ = 89.55(5)°. In this unit cell (symmetry Cl), ditrigonal cavities in adjacent silicate layers are approximately opposite. Differential Fourier analyses and least-squares refinements showed that the principal axes of the anilinium ions, i.e., N-C(1)-C(4), are nearly perpendicular to the silicate layers. The planes of the aromatic rings, however, are about ±30° to X, neither parallel nor perpendicular to that direction, as indicated by earlier studies.

Inorganic cations and water molecules are also present in the interlayer; the former and some of the latter occupy sites near the middle of the layer. Anilinium-rich and anilinium-poor domains coexist. In the latter, the cation-water system predominates and apparently conforms to the superstructure. Although the cation-water structure could not be uniquely established from the reflections produced by the sub-cell, possible positional coordinates were obtained. From structural data for the silicate layers, no evidence was found for long-range Si/Al ordering in the tetrahedral sites.

A vermiculite-aniline intercalate with a basal spacing of 14.78 Å was investigated by one- and two-dimensional X-ray diffraction methods. The intercalate, prepared by ion exchange between Na-saturated vermiculite from Llano, Texas, and a 1% aniline hydrochloride solution, contains only one aniline cation per single layer cell. A reduced effective cell-charge is believed to be responsible for this. Structure factor calculations were made in space group C2/c and with unit cell dimensions of a = 5.33, b = 9.18, c = 29.78 Å, and β = 97.0°. However, extra reflections in the a*b* plane, which are similar to those in a vermiculite-benzidine intercalate, showed that after aniline intercalation the true unit cell became primitive. The aniline cations are distributed statistically over equivalent crystallographic sites in the interlayer space. The organic molecules are orientated with their planes vertical and their nitrogen atoms over the projected centers of the ditrigonal cavities into which they key. The aniline cations form ordered arrays upon the silicate layers by packing into rows. Perpendicular to [010], populated and vacant rows alternate. Along populated rows aromatic ring planes are alternately parallel and perpendicular to [010]. With small adjustments this model is similar to that of benzidine-vermiculite.

Stable, three-dimensionally ordered complexes were formed from synthetically hydrated, highly ordered kaolinite (d(001) = 8.4 Å) and several organic compounds. Removal of the intercalated organic compound by drying or by water washing recovered the 8.4-Å hydrate with its ordered layer stacking essentially unchanged. Some of the complexes were stable for less than a day, whereas others appeared to be stable indefinitely. The compounds that formed ordered complexes were dimethylsulfoxide, formamide, hydrazine-hydrate, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and pyridine. Clay-organic complexes that were prepared from methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetaldehyde, N-methylformamide, methylethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, and K-acetate were stable only if they were immersed in the intercalating medium and had little or no stacking order.

Many of the organic compounds intercalated by the 8.4-Å hydrate are not known to be intercalated by non-hydrated kaolinite either directly or indirectly. Isolated water molecules appear to be keyed into the ditrigonal holes formed by the basal oxygen of the silicate tetrahedra of the 8.4-Å hydrate. These water molecules, referred to as “hole water,” and fluorine ions that had replaced ~20% of the inner-surface hydroxyls of the 8.4-Å phase sufficiently altered the interlayer bonding to allow an expansion of the inner-layer spaces by a variety of guest molecules. The presence of these guest molecules between the clay layers not only changed the basal spacing and perturbed the infrared (IR) bands arising from the inner-surface hydroxyls, it also shifted the position of the IR band arising from the inner hydroxyl.

Dimethylselenoxide (DMSeO) forms three structurally resolvable intercalates with kaolinite (d(001) = 10.95, 11.26, and 11.38 Å). The 11.26-Å kaolinite: DMSeO intercalate is structurally analogous to the 3-D ordered kaolinite: DMSO intercalate (d(001) = 11.22 Å). Infrared and solid-state 77Se nuclear magnetic resonance data indicate that all DMSeO molecules are equivalent in the structure and, therefore, that the 11.26-Å kaolinite: DMSeO intercalate structure is C-face centered. Structural model refinement from X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data further support this conclusion (Pl, a = 5.195(2), b = 8.990(4), c = 11.946(5) Å, α = 91.33(2)°, β = 109.39(2)°, γ = 89.77(2)°). The kaolinite: DMSO intercalate structure was subsequently re-refined from the XRD profile in C-face centered Pl. The derived orientation of the DMSO and DMSeO molecules with respect to the basal plane of their respective intercalates is in agreement with polarized infrared measurements of the angles with ab of S=O (40.3°) and Se=O (38.8°) for the 11.26-Å intercalate. The locations of the organic molecules also agree with observed infrared band splittings and perturbations. Interatomic distances calculated from the band shifts agree with those for the XRD derived structures.

The 11.38-Å kaolinite: DMSeO intercalate is closely related to the 11.26-Å intercalate, the main differences being a 2-fold disorder in the orientation of the DMSeO molecule and less penetration of the kaolinite ditrigonal cavity by that molecule. The 10.95-Å kaolinite: DMSeO intercalate, displaying disorder parallel to [110], was obtained from the 11.26- or 11.38-Å intercalates by removal of some DMSeO.

The crystal structure of the kaolinite: dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) intercalate (P1, a = 5.187(2), b = 8.964(3), c = 11.838(4) Å, α = 91.53(1)°, β = 108.59(2), γ = 89.92(1)°) has been determined using spectroscopic and X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data. Both the X-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns were refined. Solid-state 13C, 29Si, and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance data and previously collected infrared spectroscopic data provided a useful starting model for structural refinement. Due to the extreme overlap of reflections of this low-symmetry unit cell, the Rietveld method proved inadequate, and quasi-single crystal methods were employed. Each DMSO molecule was found to be triply hydrogen bonded above the octahedral vacancy in the gibbsitic sheet of the kaolinite layer. One methyl group is keyed into the ditrigonal hole in the tetrahedral sheet with the other S-C bond parallel to the sheet. The DMSO molecules are accommodated by significant horizontal displacement of individual kaolinite layers to achieve almost perfect overlap of the octahedral vacancy by the adjacent ditrigonal hole.

Intercalation of sodium and potassium salts of lauric, myristic, palmitic, elaidic, oleic, 12-hydroxystearic, and a blend of C8–C10 acids in kaolinite has been followed by X-ray powder diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal studies. The 7-Å ‘c’ axis spacing in kaolinite expands to 11 Å as a result of intercalation; this expansion is independent of the alkyl chain length of the fatty acid. The orientation of the organic molecules in the kaolinite interlayer is nearly flat, and 1H NMR indicates an enhanced ordering in the potassium laurate intercalate. The reversal or equalization of the relative intensities of hydroxyl bands at 3696 and 3619 cm-1 of kaolinite are related to the phenomenon of intercalation. The decomposition temperature of these salts decreases when they are intercalated in kaolinite.

57Fe Mössbauer spectra obtained at room temperature and 78 K for natural Mg-saturated, Ca-saturated, and benzidinium-intercalated vermiculite having a high tetrahedral iron content are presented. For all samples the spectra were computer-fitted with five overlapping doublets, representing Fe in both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. One doublet has parameters consistent with the weathered ilmenite known to be present as inclusions. For the intercalated vermiculite, the δ value of the doublet assigned to the tetrahedral Fe3+ increased with respect to the untreated sample, suggesting that the electron densities about the Fe sites had decreased following intercalation. A charge movement from the silicate layers towards the interlayer monovalent benzidinium ions is also implied. The direction of this charge movement is opposite to that found when blue monopositive radical cations form on montmorillonite surfaces. The Mössbauer evidence suggests the absence of an interlayer-Fe3+ complex.

Kaolinite: alkali halide intercalates have been successfully prepared by grinding the salt with kaolinite in the absence of water. Rate of intercalation is shown to correlate negatively with melting point of the salt. The basal dimensions of the intercalates increase with increasing size of the ion. As shown recently for kaolinite: NaCl intercalate, the layered structure survives the dehydroxylation of the kaolinite at 500°–600°C, at which point the excess alkali halide can be removed by rinsing to give an XRD-amorphous material. This amorphous material, of approximate stoichiometry MAlSiO4, reacts at surprisingly low temperatures to give crystalline phases, apparently of the same stoichiometry, with structures closely related to eucryptite (M = Li), carnegieite (M = Na), kalsilite (M = K), and leucite (M = K, Rb, Cs). The relationships between the structures of the reaction products are discussed.

This report consists of a study of l-ornithine hydrochloride-vermiculite and of benzylammonium hydrochloride-vermiculite complex. The evolution of these organo-vermiculite structures upon heating is studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as infrared spectroscopy.

After heating vermiculite saturated with 1-ornithine cations, it shows condensation of interlayer ornithine molecules (peptide complexes). The stacking mode, opposing ditrigonal cavities, is not modified between aminoacid complex and peptide complex.

For vermiculite saturated with benzylammonium cations, the stacking sequence changes through heating by changing benzylammonium to NH4+. This transformation implies a sliding of the layers over each other. The ditrigonal surface cavities become face to face, as in the original mica. There are no random translations as in the starting complex.

Kaolinite:NaCl intercalates with basal layer dimensions of 0.95 and 1.25 nm have been prepared by direct reaction of saturated aqueous NaCl solution with well-crystallized source clay KGa-1. The intercalates and their thermal decomposition products have been studied by XRD, solid-state 23Na, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR, and FTIR. Intercalate yield is enhanced by dry grinding of kaolinite with NaCl prior to intercalation. The layered structure survives dehydroxylation of the kaolinite at 500°–600°C and persists to above 800°C with a resultant tetrahedral aluminosilicate framework. Excess NaCl can be readily removed by rinsing with water, producing an XRD “amorphous” material. Upon heating at 900°C this material converts to a well-crystallized framework aluminosilicate closely related to low-carnegieite, NaAlSiO4, some 350°C below its stability field. Reaction mechanisms are discussed and structural models proposed for each of these novel materials.

The construction of organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric materials with larger, high-polarity guest molecules intercalated in kaolinite (K) faces difficulties in terms of synthesis and uncertainty of structure-property relationships. The purpose of the present study was to optimize the synthesis method and to determine the mechanism of ferroelectric behavior of kaolinite intercalated with p-aminobenzamide (PABA), with an eye to improving the design of intercalation methods and better utilization of clay-based ferroelectric materials. The K-PABA intercalation compound (chemical formula Al2Si2O5(OH)4∙(PABA)0.7) was synthesized in an autoclave and then characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that PABA expanded the kaolinite interlayer from 7.2 Å to 14.5 Å, and the orientation of the PABA molecule was ~70° from the plane of the kaolinite layers. The amino group of the PABA molecule was close to the Si sheet. The presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between kaolinite and PABA and among PABA molecules caused macro polarization of K-PABA and dipole inversion under the external electric field, resulting in K-PABA ferroelectricity. Simulation calculations using the Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package (CASTEP) and the ferroelectricity test revealed the optimized intercalation model and possible ferroelectric mechanism.
