Pheromones play an important role in mediating interspecific interactions in insects. In an insect community, pheromones can reveal information about the senders, which could be used by other members of the food web (competitor, natural enemies, etc.) to their own advantage. The aggregation pheromones of two closely related thrips species, Frankliniella occidentalis and Frankliniella intonsa, have been identified with the same major compounds, (R)-lavandulyl acetate and neryl (S)-2-methylbutanoate, but in different ratios. However, the roles of the aggregation pheromones in the interspecific interactions between these two closely related species are unknown. Here, we investigated the roles of major aggregation pheromone compounds in interspecific interactions between F. occidentalis and F. intonsa for both long and short ranges. The results showed that, at tested doses, neither aggregation pheromone-induced long range cross-attraction nor short range cross-mating was detected between F. occidentalis and F. intonsa. Field-trapping trials showed that the species-specificity in aggregation pheromones was regulated by the ratio of two major compounds. However, species-specific blends of the two major compounds had no effect on short-range interactions between these two species. Our data from the thrips species provide support for the ‘aggregation model of coexistence’, explaining the species-specific pheromone-mediated coexistence of closely related species. Thus, species-specific pheromones could be one of the factors affecting population dynamics and community structure in closely related insects with similar niches.

Tomato is an important vegetable crop that is cultivated for the domestic market in Kenya and other East African countries. Thrips are one of the key pests hampering the production of tomato, both by direct damage to the crop and as vectors of tospoviruses. Field experiments were carried out over two planting times to evaluate the use of sticky traps for monitoring thrips infesting tomato in East Africa. Blue, yellow, and clear sticky traps with and without a thrips lure (Lurem-TR) were tested. Field observations for thrips catches on the sticky traps were made weekly until crop senescence. Sticky traps were replaced with new ones at each observation time. Additionally, both destructive and non-destructive samplings for thrips were done at each observation. Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) and Ceratothripoides brunneus (Bagnall) were more attracted to blue than yellow traps. Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) attraction to blue and yellow traps was not distinctive. The addition of Lurem-TR on traps increased captures of F. schultzei and F. occidentalis but not of C. brunneus. Blue traps with Lurem-TR captures had the highest correlation with absolute estimate of thrips density on the plants. Rainfall had significant negative correlation with thrips population on the crops. Our results show that blue traps and Lurem-TR have strong potential for improving monitoring and management of thrips on tomato.

The short-range diurnal dispersal pattern of adult western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), in relation to spatial distribution of French beans, was determined in the field. A total of 1200 adult female F. occidentalis were released on 60 French bean plants with 20 adult thrips per plant at the central release point of 3.14 m2. Dispersal was determined in terms of the number of thrips recorded on French beans planted on concentric circles at 0.9, 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 m radii from a circular central release point for five days. Results indicated that there was a steady increase in the proportion of dispersing adult F. occidentalis from the first to the fourth day in the first planting season, and from the first to the third day in the second planting season. The peak hour for dispersal was 10.15 h in the first season while it was 13.15 h in the second season. Temperature and wind speed were positively associated with the dispersal activity of adult F. occidentalis. Minimal flight activity was at temperatures below 15 °C and peak flight activity was at 19 °C. The prevailing wind direction did not influence the dispersal pattern of adult F. occidentalis in both seasons. Adult F. occidentalis moved up to 7.2 m on French beans on the first day. In both seasons, the mean direction of thrips dispersal was mostly uniformly distributed (not oriented to a particular compass direction) around the central release point. The results provide an insight into developing integrated management strategies against the pest based on isolation of farm fields, management of alterative hosts around French bean fields and insecticide application.

Western flower thrips (WFT) (Frankliniella occidentalis) is an introduced pest that harms French bean production in Kenya and other countries. Since new WFT management approaches are being developed, a closer look at the genetic makeup of WFT populations can give new insights into source habitats, crop colonization patterns or host plant preferences, which are prerequisites for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. For this purpose, we used six microsatellite loci to analyse the genetic structure, diversity and gene flow of WFT sampled on French beans, intercrops and weeds in Kenyan French bean production areas. The results of this preliminary study indicate that the available microsatellites are sufficiently polymorphic for more detailed analyses on local dispersal patterns of WFT in Kenya. Even with the limited data set, the results reveal that F. occidentalis populations show considerable genetic differentiation between host plant species but not between regions, which suggests reduced gene flow and a possible development of biotypes. Possible consequences of the results on IPM are discussed.

Aggregation pheromones have been identified and tested in the field for Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips palmi. These pheromones are produced by adult males and attract both males and females. They are likely to be widespread across the Thripidae and identification is in progress for several other pest species. Aggregation pheromones are used commercially for monitoring and activation. Field trials have shown they can be cost effective for mass trapping when used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) programme. Use for other approaches, such as lure and kill and mating disruption have not yet been tested. A better understanding of the role of these pheromones in the mating behaviour of thrips is needed and this may suggest further ways of developing their potential for pest management.

In the present study, experiments were carried out in French bean fields over two planting periods to evaluate the potential use of sticky traps for monitoring the populations of pest thrips. To this end, blue, yellow and clear sticky traps (with and without a thrips lure, i.e. Lurem-TR) were tested. Field observations on thrips catches were made at weekly intervals from the sticky traps, and absolute estimates of thrips populations and their natural enemies were made by destructive (picking leaves and flowers) and non-destructive sampling (plant tapping) of plants until crop senescence during the two planting periods. Blue traps caught two and three times more thrips compared with yellow traps over the first and second planting periods, respectively. Blue traps were more attractive to Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom), Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), while yellow traps were only attractive to Hydatothrips adolfifriderici (Karny) and the natural enemies of thrips. The addition of Lurem-TR to the sticky traps significantly increased the capture of all thrips species, but not their natural enemies. The estimates of thrips populations from blue sticky traps with Lurem-TR were found to be highly correlated (r= 0.95; P< 0.001) with the absolute estimates of thrips using the destructive sampling method. The results demonstrate that blue sticky traps and Lurem-TR can be an efficient tool for the monitoring of thrips populations on French beans with least influence on their natural enemies.

Interactions among insect pests, crops and weeds are well recognised. In fact, the elimination of weed hosts outside of the crop is a common practice to control many insect-vectored viruses. However, little is known about interactions among insect pests, crops and native vegetation, and whether native plants may be used to revegetate areas where weed hosts have been eliminated as part of horticultural management regimes. We used the Northern Adelaide Plains horticultural region (South Australia, Australia) as a model system to study the potential of various plant taxa in hosting four pest thrips (three exotic, one native; Frankliniella occidentalis, F. schultzei, Thrips tabaci and T. imaginis) when located adjacent to, and distant from, horticultural crops. Flower funnels were used for standardised sampling of thrips on flowers from 19 exotic weed and 12 native plant species, representing 13 and three families, respectively. Flowers were sampled monthly over a year, and statistical analyses were performed to identify significant determinants of probability of thrips occurrence and density. Plant family was found to significantly influence both measures for each thrips species. In addition, crop proximity influenced the probability of occurrence for the two Frankliniella species (but only influenced density of the key pest F. occidentalis), and season influenced density of all four pest thrips. All native plant species tested had a low likelihood of hosting the three exotic thrips species. Overall, results suggest that judicious choice of surrounding vegetation has potential to be an important component of integrated pest management (IPM) while increasing biodiversity conservation.

Six companion crops, i.e. Tagetes erecta, Daucus carota L., Coriandrum sativum L., Brassica oleraceae L. var. acephala, Capsicum annuum L. and Zea mays L., were evaluated for their efficacy in suppressing field populations of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom on French bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. Each companion crop was interplanted with French beans in a 3×10 m plot and replicated three times in a completely randomized block design. The thrips populations on French bean flowers in experimental plots were compared with those on beans treated with two insecticides: L-cyhalothrin (Karate 1.75% EC) and methiocarb (Mesurol 500 SC) or untreated (control). Coriandrum sativum, Z. mays and T. erecta are recommended as companion crops for intercropping with French beans to reduce populations of thrips and hence minimize the use of chemical insecticides on this crop.

A field experiment was conducted to track the daily population trends and occurrence of the flower thrips Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and their indigenous natural enemies Orius spp. and Ceranisus menes (Walker), infesting French beans. French beans in monocrop or interplanted with six companion crops (Zea mays L., Coriandrum sativum L., Tagetes erecta L., Brassica oleracea var. acephala L., Daucus carota L. and Capsicum annuum L.), and two chemical insecticides, methiocarb (Mesurol 500SC) and L-cyhalothrin (Karate 1.75% EC), were evaluated for their effects on the abundance of flower thrips, throughout the day, at 1-h intervals. The average population peak of thrips was found to occur at around 1300 h, but each species had different peak periods. Adult F. occidentalis populations peaked at midday and adult M. sjostedti populations at 1500 h, while the larvae of the two thrips species peaked at around 1300 h. Orius spp. were the most abundant natural enemies and their populations peaked at around 1400 h. Ceranisus menes population also peaked at around 1400 h.

The behavioural responses of adult female western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) to volatiles from meadow-sweet (Filipendula ulmaria), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and sage (Salvia officinalis) were investigated in laboratory bioassays. Volatiles collected by entrainment of a solvent extract of F. ulmaria were more attractive than was the original extract. Frankliniella occidentalis was also significantly attracted to volatiles from L. nobilis and S. officinalis. Analysis by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry identified 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) as one of the main volatile components of all three plant species. In coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography studies with F. ulmaria, both 1,8-cineole and methyl salicylate elicited responses from F. occidentalis. Eucarvone was identified as the major component of F. ulmaria volatiles, but showed no electrophysiological activity. Behavioural responses of thrips to a range of concentrations of 1,8-cineole and methyl salicylate were tested using a modified Pettersson ‘star’ olfactometer. 1,8-Cineole showed some attractant activity for the thrips at 0.01 mg, but methyl salicylate was repellent at all the concentrations tested.
