This paper compares various wood pretreatment methods for highly degraded, and problematic fossil wood extracted from the opencast Szczerców site of the Bełchatów Lignite Mine in Central Poland. The study evaluates the pretreatment methods using both large samples (55–255 g, referred to as series A) and small samples (36–150 mg, referred to as series B). Additionally, all preparation methods were applied to medium-sized samples (approximately 3 g, referred to as series C) with solvent washes in the Soxhlet apparatus. Radiocarbon dating was conducted using the LSC technique (subseries A1) and the AMS technique (subseries A2, series B, and C). The effectiveness and utility of each pretreatment protocol were compared based on 14C measurements and FTIR analysis. Through the conducted research and a multi-criteria analysis, the most effective method for preparing old fossil wood was identified. Our experience indicates that an extended, multistage preparation of highly degraded fossil wood samples, with a 14C concentration near the detection limit of the radiocarbon method, may result in a significant increase in 14C content.

Redox and acid-base reactions play important roles in the fate of metal contaminants in soils and sediments. The presence of significant amounts of Cr, Pb and other toxic heavy metals in contaminated soils and sediments is of great environmental concern. Oxidation states and dissolution characteristics of the heavy metals can exert negative effects on the natural environment. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to follow the changes in morphology and structure of reaction products of Cr and Pb formed on mineral surfaces. Nitrate salts of Cr(III) and Pb(II) were used to replace the native exchangeable cations on muscovite and smectite surfaces and the metal-mineral systems were then reacted at different pH's and redox conditions.

For Pb, aggregate morphological forms were found at pH 6.1 and 12.4. At pH 6.1, the mean roughness value was 0.70 nm, and at pH 12.4 it was 5.30 nm. The fractal dimensions were 2.03 at pH 6.1 and 2.05 at pH 12.4. For Cr(III), both layered and aggregate morphological forms were found at pH 6.8 and 10.8. The mean roughness values were 0.90 nm at pH 6.8 and 4.3 nm at pH 10.8. Fractal dimensions for both were 2.00. The effect of redox conditions on morphological characteristics was studied on a smectite substrate. The reduced clays were more compacted than oxidized ones and the reduced clay could reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), forming new minerals on the surfaces.

A geochemical equilibrium model, MINTEQA2, was used to simulate the experimental conditions and predict possible reaction products. Simulation results agreed well with data from experiments, providing evidence that modeling can provide a useful “reality check” for such studies. Together, MINTEQA2 and AFM can provide important information for evaluating the morphologies and chemical reactivities of metal reaction products formed on phyllosilicate surfaces under varying environmental conditions.

IronIII for TiIV substitution in the structure of pedogenic and synthetic anatase of up to Fe/ (Ti+Fe) 0.1 mol/mol was indicated by an increase in unit cell size as measured by XRD line shifts. Mössbauer- and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra at both, 298 K and 4.2 K supported this by the presence of signals typical for octahedrally coordinated FeIII in a diamagnetic matrix. Charge compensation was achieved by structural OH, as indicated by FTIR bands at 3360 and 960 cm−1, which were absent in pure anatase and which disappeared on heating. The weight loss on heating amounted to ca. 0.5 mol H2O/mol Fe. At 600°C structural Fe was ejected, the unit cell size decreased to that of pure anatase, and pseudobrookite, Fe2TiO5, was formed.

Interaction of water with montmorillonite exchanged with Na+, K+, Co2+, and Cu2+ cations as a function of water content was examined using an FTIR/gravimetric cell designed to collect spectroscopic and sorption data simultaneously. Correlation of water desorption isotherms with infrared spectra of the clay-water complex showed that the position of the HOH bending band of water decreased as a function of water content. The largest decreases in frequency were observed for Cu2+ and Co2+; smaller decreases were found for Na+ and K+. In addition, the molar absorptivity of sorbed water increased upon decreasing the water content. The decrease in frequency and the concomitant increase in molar absorptivity were attributed to polarization effects on the sorbed water molecules by exchangeable cations. The interference fringes of a self supporting clay film permitted d-spacings to be determined optically and, therefore, changes in frequency, molar absorptivity, and water sorption behavior to be related directly to changes in interlayer spacing. The d-spacings obtained from the interference fringes were consistently larger by approximately 0.5 Å than those determined using powder XRD.

Water inhibits sorption of uncharged organic compounds on montmorillonites saturated with small alkylammonium cations such as tetramethylammonium (TMA) and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA). As a first step toward understanding the mechanism by which water inhibits arene sorption on TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites, infrared spectroscopy and water sorption isotherm experiments were conducted to determine whether water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations rather than the siloxane surface. Infrared spectra of normal-charge and reduced-charge TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites were obtained at partial water vapor pressures from 0.075 to 0.92 to determine if water vapor hydrates the adsorbed cations. Water adsorbed at partial pressures from 0 to about 0.2 caused the wave-number position of the HOH deformation vibration of adsorbed water to shift 4 to 10 cm-1 to higher wavenumber and the methyl deformation vibrations of adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations to shift 1 to 2 cm-1 to higher wavenumber, providing evidence that water interacts directly with adsorbed TMA and TMPA ions. There were no shifts in the ring stretching or C-H out-of-plane vibrations of TMPA, which indicates that water interacts with the methyl groups of TMPA, not with TMPA's aromatic ring. Water vapor sorption isotherms showed that normal-charge montmorillonites adsorb more water than do reduced-charge montmorillonites, consistent with the higher concentration of adsorbed cations on normal-charge clay. More water was adsorbed by TMA-montmorillonite than by TMPA-montmorillonite, consistent with the higher hydration energy of TMA. Thus, both the infrared and sorption isotherm results show that water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA, not the siloxane surface of montmorillonite.

The full structure of dickite from St. Claire, Pennsylvania, including hydrogen atoms, was refined in space group Cc using time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction data obtained at 12 K and Rietveld refinement/difference-Fourier methods (Rwp = 2.62%, reduced χ2 = 1.915, 113 variables, a = 5.1474(6)Å, b = 8.9386(10)Å, c = 14.390(2)Å, and ß = 96.483(1)°). The non-hydrogen structure is essentially identical to published structures for dickite, but the hydrogen positions are distinct. The inner hydroxyl group is approximately parallel to the (001) plane, inclined by 1.3° towards the tetrahedral sheet. Contrary to published low-temperature infrared (IR) spectra, there is no evidence that dickite possess lower symmetry at low temperatures although there is tentative evidence for statistical occupancy of H3 on more than one site. Low-temperature IR spectra of St. Claire and Wisconsin dickites do not show evidence for more than four hydroxyl groups and are consistent with the reported structure. Upon cooling from 300 to 15 K, the position of the OH3 stretching band increased from 3710 to 3731 cm−1. This large, positive shift in frequency was attributed to the increase in the internuclear O-H3 ⋯ O distance upon cooling. The frequency of the 3655 cm−1 band initially decreased by 2 cm−1 to 3653 cm−1 upon cooling from 300–125 K; however, the band increased in frequency by 1 cm−1 upon further cooling to 15 K. This unusual change in frequency upon cooling is consistent with the assignment of this band to OH2 and OH4. The position of the OH1 stretching band decreased from 3622 to 3620 cm−1 upon cooling, which was attributed, in part, to the observed increase in the Al-O(H1)-Al angle at low temperature.

In the copper deposit of Salobo 3A (Brazil), nontronite-like clay samples were found at the bottom of the weathering blanket. Samples were fractionated first by sedimentation and then by a HGMS method. From XRD data, it was found that the samples are essentially smectite with kaolinite in very small quantities. The average structural formula of the smectite, presented in the traditional manner, is:

Chemical analyses show that the smectite samples contain a population of clay particles whose chemistry ranges between a nontronite end-member and an Al-Mg beidellite end-member.

Spectroscopic studies by FTIR, Mössbauer, and ESR show that the three major octahedral cations (Al, Fe, Mg) are present in each octahedral sheet of the smectite, forming a solid solution, and that the chemical trends of the smectite clay detected at a “macroscopic” scale (associated clay particles) can also be observed at the unit cell scale.

Products resulting from the reaction of toluene with Cu(II)-montmorillonite were analyzed using GC/MS, HPLC/MS, GPC, and FTIR methods. Numerous oligomers of toluene were observed, extending at least as high as the resolution limit (1500 g/mol) of the GPC column. The FTIR spectrum of the nonvolatile components of the extract was very similar to that of liquid toluene. GC/MS data on the volatile components revealed dimers, trimers, and a multitude of transmethylated products. Oligomerization proceeded via both ring-ring (i.e., polyphenyl) and ring-methyl linkages. The primary trans-methylated products were tert-butylbenzene and isopropylxylene, indicating a competition between ringand side-chain methylations. The side-chain substitutions cannot be explained in terms of the aromatic radical cation intermediate which typically forms in arene/clay reactions. A consideration of alkylbenzene reactions observed in various other media suggests that the present transmethylation reactions occur via a benzyl cation intermediate.

An environmental infrared microbalance (EIRM) cell was used to study H2O sorption on two montmorillonite samples as a function of water content and type of exchangeable cation. The vibrational spectra showed that H2O sorbed to the clay at low-water content was strongly influenced by the exchangeable cation and by the close proximity to the clay surface. At water contents <6 H20 molecules per exchangeable cation, the H-O-H bending mode of H2O (v2 mode) shifts to a lower frequency and is characterized by an increase in molar absorptivity. In contrast, the positions of the asymmetric and symmetric OH-stretching modes of sorbed water (v1 and v3 modes) shift to higher energies. These observations indicate that H2O molecules sorbed to the clay surface at low-water content are less hydrogen bonded than in bulk H2O. In addition, the vibrational-stretching and bending bands of the structural OH groups of the 2:1 layer are also strongly influenced by H2O content and type of exchangeable cation. By using the EIRM cell, the molar absorptivities of the structural OH-bending vibrations were measured as a function of H2O content. The position and molar absorptivity of the structural OH-bending bands at 920, 883, and 840 cm-1 are strongly influenced by H2O content and type of exchangeable cation. The molar absorptivity of the 920-cm-1 band, which is assigned to the AlAlOH group, decreased strongly at low-H2O content. This reduction in intensity is assigned to a dehydration-induced change in orientation of the structural OH groups resulting from the penetration of H2O molecules into siloxane ditrigonal cavities that are not associated with a net negative charge from isomorphous substitutions.

Sorption of benzene onto Cu-montmorillonite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and 13C magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Under anhydrous conditions, chemisorption of benzene in the interlamellar region of Cu-montmorillonite led to the formation of a dark red surface complex that exhibited a vibrational spectrum similar to that of doped poly-p-phenylene. When the benzene sorption reaction was carried out under high relative humidity conditions, polymerization of benzene did not occur. The FTIR spectrum of the surface complex formed under wet conditions exhibited vibrational bands that could not be assigned to those of the parent benzene molecule or to those of previously observed chemisorbed Type I or Type II complexes. 13C MAS NMR spectra of 13C-enriched benzene sorbed onto Cu-montmorillonite powder showed the presence of two groups of peaks that could be assigned to aromatic and aliphatic carbon respectively.

A synergistic mechanism for the retention of organic and inorganic pollutants in clays is discussed in this paper. The mechanism of adsorption of cis- or trans- 1,2-dichloroethylene vapor (CDE or TDE, respectively) by hydrated smectite clay (hectorite) exchanged with Pb2+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Ca2+, Ag+, or Na+ has been investigated by simultaneously measuring chlorohydrocarbon uptake and water desorption isotherm and by recording the infrared (IR) spectrum of the adsorbed phase. Hydrated hectorite saturated with divalent cations adsorbs about 55% more CDE or 35% more TDE than those saturated with monovalent cations. The quantity of chlorohydrocarbon adsorbed is also a function of the hydration of the clay interlayer space. When dehydrated, hectorite does not adsorb CDE or TDE. Upon long outgassing at room temperature or even at 100°C, the characteristic IR bands of clays with adsorbed chlorohydrocarbon, although much weakened, are still observable. The ratio of the amount of water desorbed to the amount of chlorohydrocarbon adsorbed varied from about 0.22 to 0.34. A shift of the center of gravity of the hydration water OH stretching frequency towards a higher wavenumber and of the asymmetric CC1 stretching vibration toward a lower frequency suggest that the formation of hydrogen bonds between CDE or TDE and water is the driving force for adsorption and that the cation-dipole interaction does not play a major role.

Hydrothermal syntheses were performed at various pH values and temperatures to induce variability in kaolinite defect density. Temperature of synthesis ranged from 200 to 240°C, for 21 d. Initial pH at room temperature ranged from 0.5 to 14. The starting material was a hydrothermally treated gel, with an atomic Si/Al ratio of 0.93, partly transformed into kaolinite.

Kaolinite was obtained for a wide range of pH. Although no influence of temperature on “crystallinity” (i.e., defect density) was observed, the effect of pH was important. A continuous series was obtained from a low-defect kaolinite, with high thermal stability and a hexagonal morphology for the most acidic final pH, to a high-defect kaolinite, with low thermal stability and lath shape for the most basic final pH. These variations of kaolinite properties appear related to the pH dependence of kaolinite surface speciation. Increasing pH value results in increased cation adsorption on the kaolinite external surfaces and increases in the elongation of particles.

This study investigates the complexes formed between amino acids, which are the natural degradation products of organic matter, and smectites. Thus, the adsorption and desorption behavior of cysteine and Na-, Ca-, Cu-homoionic smectites with different layer-charge location, a montmorillonite, and a beidellite, were studied. The clay samples were treated with Na, Ca, and Cu 1 N solutions and then with a 0.2 M cysteine solution. To test smectite-cysteine stability at acidic pH, the solids obtained were repeatedly treated with distilled water acidified to pH = 5. All treated samples were characterized by thermal, X-ray diffraction, chemical, and infrared analyses. The results showed that: 1) Na- and Ca-rich smectites adsorbed and retained small amounts of cysteine, and did not show interlayer cation-cysteine complexes, whereas the amino acid was strongly retained in the interlayer by Cu-rich smectites; 2) d(001)-values for Na- and Ca-rich smectites showed little or no expansion, whereas for the Cu-rich smectites the intercalation of the organic molecule produced a swelling of the structure; 3) the interaction mechanism of homoionic smectites with cysteine in an aqueous medium occurs by weak interactions, (e.g., van der Waals interactions, hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole interactions, and other electrostatic forces such as entropy-driven hydrophobic bonding), and/or by complexes involving interlayer cations and organic ligands. The formation of a stable chelate complex with the saturating ion permits cysteine to be adsorbed by Cu(II)-rich smectites and to be resistant to migration in soils and groundwaters.

Kaolinite:NaCl intercalates with basal layer dimensions of 0.95 and 1.25 nm have been prepared by direct reaction of saturated aqueous NaCl solution with well-crystallized source clay KGa-1. The intercalates and their thermal decomposition products have been studied by XRD, solid-state 23Na, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR, and FTIR. Intercalate yield is enhanced by dry grinding of kaolinite with NaCl prior to intercalation. The layered structure survives dehydroxylation of the kaolinite at 500°–600°C and persists to above 800°C with a resultant tetrahedral aluminosilicate framework. Excess NaCl can be readily removed by rinsing with water, producing an XRD “amorphous” material. Upon heating at 900°C this material converts to a well-crystallized framework aluminosilicate closely related to low-carnegieite, NaAlSiO4, some 350°C below its stability field. Reaction mechanisms are discussed and structural models proposed for each of these novel materials.

Accurate radiocarbon (14C) analysis depends on a successful carbon separation relevant to the studied object. The process of 14C dating involves the following steps: characterization and sample choice, sample treatment, measurements, and evaluation of the results. Here, we provide an overview of conventional approaches to macromolecular samples and address specific issues such as detecting and removing contamination with roots, dolomite, and conservation products. We discuss the application of elemental analysis (%N, %C) in the preparation of bones and the infrared analysis in monitoring the contamination of samples. Our observations provide the basis for the discussions of the existing results and for planning the future sampling.

Smectitic clay minerals are unique indicators of paleoenvironmental conditions and exhibit a unique reactivity in the mineral world. Smectites may exhibit tetrahedral substitutions (Al3+, and sometimes Fe3+, can substitute for Si4+ in tetrahedral sites), resulting in a layer-charge increase, thereby impacting their properties (e.g. swelling and sorption capacities, catalytic properties, expandable abilities). The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of pH conditions on the hydrothermal production of smectite end-members exhibiting tetrahedral Al substitutions (saponite, beidellite, and nontronite), using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) methods. The results of a series of syntheses conducted at various pH values allowed discussion of the crystallization pathways of these smectites from a mechanistic point of view. Altogether, the present study provided easily reproducible protocols for the hydrothermal production of pure saponite, nontronite, or beidellite (i.e. with no other mineral). The successful synthesis of pure saponite was achieved by exposing the starting gels to 230°C for 4 days in solutions at pH ranging from 5.5 to 14. The successful synthesis of pure beidellite was achieved by exposing the starting gels to 230°C for 9 days in a solution at pH 12. The successful synthesis of pure nontronite was achieved by exposing the starting gels to 150°C for 2.5 days in a solution at pH 12.5. Although extrapolating experimental results to natural settings remains difficult, the results of the present study may be of great help to constrain better the geochemical conditions existing or having existed on extraterrestrial planetary bodies.

Synthetic dyes in industrial effluents pose a significant risk to human health and the environment, so much effort has been expended to degrade them using various methods, including the use of clay minerals as catalysts. The purpose of this study was to advance understanding of the mechanisms for clay-catalyzed degradation of crystal violet (CV) and other triarylmethine dyes using three different vermiculite clays (Llano, Texas, VTx-1; Ojen, OV; and Russian, RV), a montmorillonite (SWy-1), and a Spanish sepiolite (SEP). While OV, RV, SWy-1, and SEP showed almost no activity with respect to dye degradation, VTx-1 caused complete removal of the dye from solution up to the equivalent of 200% of the cation exchange capacity of the clay. While large amounts of dye were removed from the solution, no change in basal spacing was observed by X-ray diffraction. The kinetics of removal of CV from solution began after a lag period of >10 days in a process that can be described by pseudo-second order kinetics. By comparison, adsorption of CV onto SWy-1 and SEP was immediate, without any lag period. Sonication treatment of the VTx-1 vermiculite suspension caused the CV removal process to begin immediately. Fourier-transform infrared measurements of adsorption of CV on clays revealed that for the OV and RV vermiculites, SEP sepiolite, and SWy-1 montmorillonite the spectra were similar to the original dye; the spectra of the VTx-1-dye differed considerably, however, exhibiting vibrations of methylene groups (—CH2—) which were not present in the CV molecule. The significant changes in the IR spectrum indicated that CV underwent degradation on the surface of the VTx-1 vermiculite. Carbon-content analysis led to the conclusion that degradation products remained bound to the clay. Similar effects were observed for two other triarylmethine dyes (malachite green and methyl green) added to VTx-1, indicated that it may, therefore, be considered suitable as a sorbent to remove and decompose such dyes from industrial effluents. Pretreatment by sonication would remove the need for long incubation times.

Acid-base titrations and attenuated total reflectance-infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy of solutions containing Zn(NO3)2 and the herbicide 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole suggested that soluble complexes ZnL2+ and Zn(OH)L+ form, where L represents aminotriazole. Sorption experiments and modeling in systems containing K-saturated Wyoming (SWy-K) montmorillonite suggest that at low concentrations the aminotriazole sorbs primarily in cationic form via an ion-exchange mechanism. Sorption isotherms for aminotriazole are ‘s’-shaped, indicating a co-operative sorption mechanism as the concentration of the molecule increases. At higher concentrations, ATR-IR spectroscopy indicated the presence of cationic and neutral triazole molecules on the surface, while X-ray diffraction data suggest interaction with interlayer regions of the clay. When the concentration of the herbicide was high, initial sorption of aminotriazole cations modified the clay to make the partitioning of neutral molecules to the surface more favorable. Experiments conducted in the presence of Zn(II) indicated that below pH 7, Zn(II) and aminotriazole compete for sorption sites, while above pH 7 the presence of Zn(II) enhances the uptake of aminotriazole. The enhancement was attributed to the formation of an inner-sphere ternary surface complex at hydroxyl sites (SOH) on crystal edges, having the form [(SOZn(OH)L)]0.

Dioctahedral and trioctahedral smectites of very low Fe contents were exchanged with Ca (0.8 N CaCl2) and then with Cd (0.004–0.2 N CdCl2), resulting in the approximate Ca/Cd interlayer compositions 100/0, 75/25, 50/50 and 0/100. The samples were analyzed using 113Cd and 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy, at different hydration states, and by FTIR using films oriented at 90 and 45° to the infrared beam. When adsorbed from low-concentration CdCl2 solutions, as in this study, Cd is in the smectite interlayer as Cd2+, surrounded by water molecules. In smectite specimens with no tetrahedral charge, Cd occupies one single site in the center of the interlayer along the c axis but in smectite with tetrahedral charge, the basal oxygen atoms with excess negative charge interact with some of the Cd atoms more strongly, generating a second site in which Cd is displaced from the center of the interlayer and closer to those oxygen atoms. The 1H NMR study showed protons from hydration water and smectite hydroxyls and showed that both have more than one component. The FTIR and 1H NMR experiments indicate that Cd interacts with hydroxyl groups through one of the solvating water molecules in the first coordination sphere. Cadmium retains water molecules bridging Cd and OH groups even at low hydration states. Comparison with previous studies shows that, when adsorbed from high-concentration CdCl2 solutions, Cd species other than Cd2+ are present in sufficient quantities to enter the interlayer and create a different Cd-water complex, seemingly displacing Cd2+ from the center of the interlayer.
