The digestive tract of the little owl, Athene noctua (Strigiformes: Strigidae), is described in two different seasons. The digestive tract of this bird follows the basic model for that of a predatory bird. The cervical esophagus is not expanded to form a crop. The internal surface of the esophagus forms numerous longitudinal folds provided with numerous mucous glands. These longitudinal folds increase in number and vary in depth posteriorly. The folds of the proventriculus are composed of simple branched tubular glands. The ventriculus is lined by a thin layer of koilin. The number of goblet cells gradually increases from the duodenum to the rectum, and the lymphatic tissue diffuses within the lamina propria. The esophageal glands secrete acid mucopolysaccharides, while the gastric glands of the stomach, the goblet cells, and crypts of Lieberkühn secrete acid mucopolysaccharides. Proteins were observed in the different histological structures of the digestive tract. Morphometric and histometric studies showed differences between summer and winter in the esophagus and glandular stomach (especially in winter), but no seasonal differences were seen in the muscular stomach, or small and large intestines.

The morphological and histological structures of the digestive tracts of adult males and females of Capnodis tenebrionis (L. 1758) are described using stereo microscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. C. tenebrionis is an economically important species and not previously studied. The digestive tract of C. tenebrionis is morphologically and histologically divided into three main parts, including foregut, midgut, and hindgut. The foregut begins at the mouth followed by the short pharynx and esophagus, crop and proventriculus. Histologically, the foregut showed outer circular and inner longitudinal muscle layers followed by a basement membrane and epithelium. The innermost layer is intima. The inner surface of the crop shows several spine-like structures. There are clustered teeth on the inner surface of the proventriculus. The midgut consists of outer muscularis and inner columnar epithelium with a peritrophic membrane surrounding gut content. The outer surface of the midgut is covered with regularly spaced rounded structures called regenerative crypts. The Malpighian tubule shows a single layer of cuboidal epithelium. The hindgut, the last part of the digestive system, initiates with pylorus followed by ileum, colon, and rectum and ends exteriorly with the anus.

We describe the morphological adaptations of the tongue and gastrointestinal tract of the striped sand snake Psammophis sibilans and discuss their functional importance. Using standard histological, histochemical, and scanning electron microscopy techniques, we analyzed 11 adult snakes of both sexes. Our findings showed that the bifurcated non-papillate tongue exhibited chemoreceptive adaptions to squamate foraging behavior. The lingual apex tapered terminally with sensory spines, and the body of the tongue possesses a characteristic central odor–receptor chamber that might serve to trap and retain scent molecules. Furthermore, the intrinsic musculature showed interwoven and well-developed transverse, vertical and longitudinal muscle fibers that control contraction and retraction during probing and flicking. The esophagus displayed highly folded mucosa lined with columnar epithelium with goblet cells. In contrast, the stomach mucosa formed finger-like gastric rugae, encompassing tubular glands with dorsal gastric pits. The intestine is distinct from other vertebrates in lacking the crypts of Lieberkühn in the tunica mucosa and submucosa. The intestine mucosa is mostly arranged in interdigitating villi oriented perpendicular to the luminal surface. We extrapolated subtle variations for both acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins localization as well as collagen fibers using histochemical analyses. The elaborate histo-morphological and functional adaptation of the tongue and digestive tract plays a pivotal role in foraging and feeding behavior.

The aim of this Research Reflection is to describe the basic rumen function of goats and its modification in response to environmental factors, as well as to discuss similarities and differences when compared to other ruminants. In so doing we shall reveal the adaptive capacity of goats to harsh environments. The basic rumen function in goats is similar to other species of ruminants, as stressed by the opportunity to apply the updates of feeding systems for ruminants to goats. The rumen epithelium acts as a protective barrier between the rumen and the host, but it can be damaged by toxic compounds or acidosis. The rumen also plays an important role in water balance, both for dehydration and rehydration. Recent studies show that the microbiota exhibits a high fractional stability due to functional redundancy and resilience, but this needs more investigation. The microbial community structure differs between goats and cows, which explains the difference in sensitivity to milk fat depression following intake of high lipid diets. Goats also differ from other ruminants by their enhanced ability to feed-sort, but as with cows they can suffer from acidosis. Nevertheless, goats can be considered to be very resistant to environmental factors such as water stress, salt stress or heat stress, and this is especially so in some endogenous breeds. They also are able to detoxify tannins, polyphenols and other secondary metabolites. Some new trials involving feeding behaviour, microbiota and omics or approaches by meta-analyses or modelling will improve our knowledge of rumen function in goats.

Due to their high energy requirements, high-yielding dairy cows receive high-grain diets. This commonly jeopardises their gastrointestinal health by causing subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) and hindgut acidosis. These disorders can disrupt nutrient utilisations, impair the functionalities of gastrointestinal microbiota, and reduce the absorptive and barrier capacities of gastrointestinal epithelia. They can also trigger inflammatory responses. The symptoms of SARA are not only due to a depressed rumen pH. Hence, the diagnosis of this disorder based solely on reticulo-rumen pH values is inaccurate. An accurate diagnosis requires a combination of clinical examinations of cows, including blood, milk, urine and faeces parameters, as well as analyses of herd management and feed quality, including the dietary contents of NDF, starch and physical effective NDF. Grain-induced SARA increases acidity and shifts availabilities of substrates for microorganisms in the reticulo-rumen and hindgut and can result in a dysbiotic microbiota that are characterised by low richness, diversity and functionality. Also, amylolytic microorganisms become more dominant at the expense of proteolytic and fibrolytic ones. Opportunistic microorganisms can take advantage of newly available niches, which, combined with reduced functionalities of epithelia, can contribute to an overall reduction in nutrient utilisation and increasing endotoxins and pathogens in digesta and faeces. The reduced barrier function of epithelia increases translocation of these endotoxins and other immunogenic compounds out of the digestive tract, which may be the cause of inflammations. This needs to be confirmed by determining the toxicity of these compounds. Cows differ in their susceptibility to poor gastrointestinal health, due to variations in genetics, feeding history, diet adaptation, gastrointestinal microbiota, metabolic adaptation, stress and infections. These differences may also offer opportunities for the management of gastrointestinal health. Strategies to prevent SARA include balancing the diet for physical effective fibre, non-fibre carbohydrates and starch, managing the different fractions of non-fibre carbohydrates, and consideration of the type and processing of grain and forage digestibility. Gastrointestinal health disorders due to high grain feeding may be attenuated by a variety of feed supplements and additives, including buffers, antibiotics, probiotics/direct fed microbials and yeast products. However, the efficacy of strategies to prevent these disorders must be improved. This requires a better understanding of the mechanisms through which these strategies affect the functionality of gastrointestinal microbiota and epithelia, and the immunity, inflammation and ‘gastrointestinal-health robustness’ of cows. More representative models to induce SARA are also needed.

The posterior esophagus of Bulla striata, running from the gizzard to the stomach, was investigated with light and electron microscopy to obtain new data for a comparative analysis of the digestive system in cephalaspidean opisthobranchs. In this species, the posterior esophagus can be divided into two regions. In the first, the epithelium is formed by columnar cells with apical microvilli embedded in a cuticle. Many epithelial and subepithelial secretory cells are present in this region. In both, electron-lucent secretory vesicles containing filaments and a peripheral round mass of secretory material fill the cytoplasm. These acid mucus-secreting cells may also contain a few dense secretory vesicles. In the second part of the posterior esophagus, the cuticle is absent and the epithelium is ciliated. In this region, epithelial cells may contain larger lipid droplets and glycogen reserves. Subepithelial secretory cells are not present, and in epithelial secretory cells the number of dense vesicles increases, but most secretory cells still contain some electron-lucent vesicles. These cells secrete a mixture of proteins and acid polysaccharides and should be considered seromucous. The secretory cells of the posterior esophagus are significantly different from those previously reported in the anterior esophagus of this herbivorous species.

The activity of a crude enzyme preparation extracted from hepatopancreas in the digestive tract of the giant cricket Brachytrupes membranaceus (Drury) was assayed for amylase and α-glucosidase. Amylase- and α-glucosidase-specific activities were estimated to be 3.31 and 13.02 UI/mg, respectively. The zymogram analysis of the crude enzymatic extract showed the existence of two isoforms of amylase. For α-glucosidase, the zymogram analysis showed one form only. Both the amylolytic activities exhibited optimum pH at 6.6 and 7.0, respectively, for amylase and α-glucosidase. As for optimum temperature, values were estimated at 55 and 40 °C for amylase and α-glucosidase activities, respectively. Amylase activity was found to be stable at pH 6.6–7.6 and temperatures up to 55 °C. The corresponding values for α-glucosidase were pH 6–7 and up to 40 °C. Amylolytic enzymes of B.membranaceus were activated by Ca2+ and Ba2+ and inhibited by chemical agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 4-chloromercuribenzoic acid and dithionitrobenzoic acid. The analysis of hydrolytic products after soluble starch hydrolysis by the enzyme preparation from the digestive tract of B. membranaceus by thin layer chromatography revealed that glucose and maltose were the major products. The present study showed that these amylolytic enzymes play a fundamental role in energy production for this insect.

The helminth community in the digestive tract of the sedentary predatory fish, Sciaena umbra, near the Scandola Nature Reserve, Corsica, consists of 5 species of digeneans. Anoiktostoma coronatum (in the rectum) and Metadena pauli (in the intestine) were found in almost all the fish, and in high numbers; they are considered core species. Distomum aloysiae, Pleorchis polyorchis (both in the intestine), and Stephanostomum bicoronatum (in the rectum) were relatively uncommon, usually found in small numbers, and are considered satellite species. The two core species were very abundant in June, when the size of their populations was strongly correlated with the size of the host fish. At this time, M. pauli was found mainly in the duodenum, but in high populations was spread throughout the intestine (s. strict.). Both species were much less abundant in October, their populations were less dependent on host size, and M. pauli was more limited to the anterior intestine. Pleorchis polyorchis and Distomum aloysiae were more frequent in October, were found predominately in fish with few M. pauli, and were found posterior to M. pauli, suggesting some interactions between these species. Stephano-stomum bicoronatum showed no seasonal patterns, and no apparent interactions with A. coronatum.

With genetic selection, the increase in litter size has led to higher variation in within-litter birth weights in pigs. This has been associated with a reduction in mean birth weights and a rise in the proportion of piglets weighing less than 1 kg at birth. Low birth weight pigs exhibit lower postnatal growth rates and feed efficiency, which may be explained by an inadequate digestion and/or nutrient use as a consequence of prenatal undernutrition. It is now documented that there is a relationship between birth weight and subsequent pattern of growth and development of tissues and organs. During the neonatal period, the rapid somatic growth is accompanied by tremendous anatomical, physiological and chemical composition changes. The present review focuses primarily on the influence of low birth weight on adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal tract growth and development during the suckling period. The importance of the somatotropic axis, insulin, thyroid hormones, glucocorticoids, epidermal growth factor and leptin in the regulation of these developmental processes is also considered.

The microflora of the digestive tract of poultry is still incompletely known. Microbial populations of varying size and complexity occur throughout the digestive tract and the highest and most complex floras are found in the crop and the caeca. The upper part of the digestive tract is predominantly settled by facultative anaerobes, whereas the caeca are mainly the site of obligate anaerobes. The types, numbers and metabolic activities of the organisms are affected by numerous factors such as individual, animal age, environment, and diet. Bacteria produce various metabolites that can be useful or detrimental to the host. Interactions between bacteria and the gastrointestinal epithelium lead to various structural and functional modifications of the digestive tract. Bacteria can impair lipid digestion and may modify carbohydrate and protein digestion. They cause an increase in energy and amino acid requirements. They have a negative effect on vitamin nutrition. Beneficial bacteria can protect birds against pathogens through a competitive exclusion process. Moreover, the flora is involved in the development of the intestinal immune system. Overall, bacteria have a negative effect on bird growth. They may also have an effect on meat and egg quality. Improved knowledge of the microflora of the digestive tract and its consequences may contribute to its control and beneficial use for birds as well as breeders, consumers and the environment.

Transit kinetics and survival rates of a bacterial species from yoghurt (i.e. Streptococcus thermophilus strain FBI3) were examined in different digestive compartments of gnotoxenic and human-microbiota-associated mice. The production of the lactose-hydrolysing enzyme (i.e. β-galactosidase) was also investigated within the digestive tract, using a chromosomal reporter system based on luciferase genes from Photorhabdus luminescens under the control of the plac promoter. In both mice models, S. thermophilus cells transited within 2h from the stomach to the caecum–colon compartment of the digestive tract where they displayed a survival rate of nearly 100%. In gnotoxenic mice, luciferase activity was found to increase in the second half of the small intestine and in the caecum–colon compartment when lactose was added to the drinking water provided to the animals. In human-microbiota-associated mice drinking lactose, luciferase activity was similarly increased in the second half of the small intestine but was drastically reduced in the caecum–colon compartment. This feature could be ascribed to the presence of the resident human microbiota.

A first group of three horses was given diet 1 (D1) allowing 1180 g per 100 kg body weight (BW) of a pelleted food rich in fibre (P1) and 556 g per 100 kg BW of straw during a 20-day period to allow for adaptation. A second group of four horses were given diet 2 (D2) allowing 1180 g per 100 kg BW of a pelleted food rich in cereals (P2) and 1000 g per 100 kg BW of meadow hay during the same period. Digesta was collected from the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, right ventral colon, left ventral colon, left dorsal colon, right dorsal colon, and small colon, and faeces were collected under general anaesthesia 2·5 h after the ingestion of the morning pelleted meal. The concentration of total anaerobic, cellulolytic and lactic acid-utilizing bacteria, lactobacilli and streptococci were determined in all these segments except for the duodenum, left ventral colon, right dorsal colon and small colon. D-/L-lactic acid, volatile fatty acids and pH were measured in all anatomic segments of the digestive tract (from stomach to small colon). The caecal concentration of total anaerobic bacteria was the lowest (7·9 5 107 colony-forming units (c f. u.) per ml), whereas that of the stomach was the highest (1·4 5 109 c f. u. per ml) (P < 0·001). Cellulolytic bacteria did not exceed 3·0 5 102 c f u. per ml in the ante-caecal segments whereas in the hindgut the average concentration was 5·3 x 105 c f u. per ml (P < 0·001). Likewise, VFA concentrations were also greater in the large intestine (on average, 96·3 mmol/l v. 8·8 mmol/l in the ante-caecal segments) (P < 0·001), confirming the limited extent of fibre degradation in these ante-caecal segments. Lactobacilli, streptococci and lactate-utilizing bacteria colonized all the digestive tract; the stomach and the small intestine tended to host the greatest numbers of these bacteria, which suggests a high interference of micro-organisms with the digestion of readily fermentable carbohydrates. Compared with the other ante-caecal segments, the stomach ecosystem seemed the most affected by the composition of the last pelleted meal ingested: the concentrations of lactobacilli and lactate-utilizing bacteria were higher (P < 0·05) with P2. The lower concentration of D-/L-lactate with P2 (P < 0·05) was concomitant with a greater proportion of propionate (P < 0·05), probably related to a greater fermentation of lactate. In the large intestine of horses given D2, cellulolytic bacteria tended to be lower, whereas VFA concentrations were higher (P < 0·05). The lower [NDF/starch] ratio of D2 was probably less propitious for the proliferation of cellulolytic bacteria but was compensated by the higher cellulose intake brought by the hay.

Since genetically modified (GM) lactic acid bacteria (LAB) might be released in open environments for future nutritional and medical applications, the purpose of this study was to determine an upper limit for the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in the digestive tract (DT) from Lactococcus lactis carrying heterologous genes (lux genes encoding a bacterial luciferase) to Enterococcus faecalis. Two enterococcal wide host-range conjugative model systems were used: (i) a system composed of a mobilizable plasmid containing the heterologous lux genes and a native conjugative helper plasmid; and (ii) a Tn916-lux transposon. Both systems were tested under the most transfer-prone conditions, i.e. germfree mice mono-associated with the recipient E. faecalis. No transfer was observed with the transposon system. Transfers of the mobilizable plasmid carrying heterologous genes were below 102 transconjugants per g of faeces for a single donor dose and reached between 103 and 104 transconjugants per g of faeces when continuous inoculation of the donor strain was used. Once established in mice, transconjugants persisted at low levels in the mouse DT.

To accommodate the rapid transition to external nutrients, the chick's gastrointestinal tract undergoes dramatic changes within the first few days of life. These include a rapid increase in mass, villi number and length, enterocyte number, crypt depth and proliferating cells. Concomitant with the development of digestive structures and functions a rapid development of the gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) occurs. This lymphoid system works within and in concert with digestive tract parenchyma, however, there is little information describing the normal development and immunological function of the avian GALT in the immediate post-hatch period. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge on the structure and function of the avian GALT during the early post-hatch period. At hatch, the gut is poorly populated by both innate immune leukocytes and lymphocytes. The basal numbers of lymphocytes are the result of early waves migrating from the thymus and bursa of Fabricius. Further waves of lymphocyte migration occur after 4 days of life and continue intermittently with time. In concert with this pattern of lymphocyte population adaptive immunity develops. Hence, the gut of the hatchling is unprotected by adaptive immunity during the first few days of life. Protection during this critical period might be the result of maternal antibody activity or that of the innate immune system. This system appears to be functional at this time, though much work is needed to establish this possibility. Upon maturity of the immune system, most of the immunological activity within the chick GALT is concentrated in the hindgut, and specifically so in the caeca and bursa of Fabricius. Once immune responses have become established the relevant cells disseminate systemically and to other areas of the small intestines. Finally, observations on the beneficial effects of early feeding on development of gut and GALT are discussed with reference to management of hatchlings.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of dietary tannin on gastrointestinal tract (GIT) histology and on liver and kidney masses. Five groups of Boer goats were given diets containing 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g/kg of tannin for 6 weeks before data collection. Differences in the histopathology of the oesophagus, reticulum, rumen, omasum, abomasum and duodenum were evaluated. Increased dietary tannin levels induced thickening and/or keratinization of epithelial tissue in the reticulum, rumen, omasum and abomasum. Increased tannin levels also resulted in a loss of epithelial cells, erosion of microvilli and shortened villi height in the duodenum, which could impair the absorption of nutrients. Consequently, condensed tannins had a negative effect on the histopathology of the Boer goats.

In order to study the effect of feeding non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) on the production and absorption of the malodorous compounds skatole and indole, eighteen male pigs, representing nine littermate groups, were used. One pig from each litter was assigned to either a low-NSP diet (87 g/kg of NSP) or a high-NSP diet (160 g/kg of NSP). Faecal samples and blood samples from vena jugularis were collected during a three-day period. The production of indolic compounds in different sections of the gastro-intestinal tract of six littermate groups was measured at slaughter (after 1 month on the diets). To investigate the absorption of indole and skatole, three catheterized pigs, acting as their own control (2 weeks on each diet) were used. Parallel determinations in portal blood, peripheral blood and in faeces of skatole and indole were conducted. Faecal, intestinal and blood samples were analysed for indolic compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The production of indole and skatole in the proximal and distal part of the hind gut, respectively, was significantly reduced in pigs given the high-NSP diet. Similarly, both blood and faecal samples revealed that dietary NSP-inclusion reduced skatole concentration, whereas a dietary effect of NSP on the indole concentration was reflected in blood samples only. The absorption of skatole and indole was significantly lower in pigs given the high-NSP diet compared with those offered the low-NSP diet. The skatole concentrations in blood and faeces were highly correlated when measured within the individual animal, suggesting that a proportional amount of the skatole produced was absorbed. In contrast, only weak correlations were demonstrated when determined between animals. This emphasizes the great impact that individual hepatic clearance rate would have on the level of skatole in backfat, and consequently the importance of applying cross-over designs, when studying the absorption of indolic compounds.

A comparison of in vitro microbial activity was made between inocula from faeces of adult and unweaned pigs, using a range of carbohydrate-rich substrates. The substrates tested were classified into groups (fibre-rich, grains, gums, pectin, saccharides, storage carbohydrates, and miscellaneous). Proximate and fibre analyses were determined for all substrates tested. Fermentation kinetics were measured according to the cumulative gas production technique. End-point products such as gas, volatile fatty acids and ammonia were also determined. The faeces from the adult pigs (ATF) were collected from four castrated finisher pigs (Dutch Landrace × Great Yorkshire). These were offered a diet based on highly digestible maize starch and fish meal, so as to be as free as possible of fermentable carbohydrates. The unweaned piglet faeces were collected from 19 unweaned piglets (male and female) which were 27 to 30 days old. The parameters were tested for significance by an analysis of variance using the Tukey's studentized range test of multiple comparisons. There were significant differences in the fermentation patterns both due to source of substrate and inoculum. It would appear that the metabolic activity of the microflora does differ significantly between adult and weanling pigs, though this varied for the different carbohydrates tested. Suggestions are made as to how to select potential carbohydrate ingredients for an in vivo experiment, based on their in vitro fermentation characteristics.

Two experiments were carried out with Scottish Blackface lambs to investigate the effects of restricted nutrition during pregnancy and lactation on voluntary food intakes (VFI) between weaning and 2 years of age. Ewes were given diets providing 0·7 (LP) or 10 (HP) of their estimated metabolizable energy requirements during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy and subsequently grazed swards with mean sward surface heights of approximately 3 cm (LL) or 6 cm (HL) during lactation. All lambs were weaned at 17 weeks of age. In experiment 1, four treatment combinations (LP-LL, LP-HL, HP-LL and HP-HL) were applied and female lambs were studied. In experiment 2, two treatment combinations (LP-LL and HP-HL) were applied and male lambs were studied. In both experiments the lambs received a common level of nutrition between weaning and 2 years of age.

In both experiments, mean live weights were proportionately 0·2 higher for HP-HL than for LP-LL lambs at weaning (P < 0·001) and in experiment 2 mean live weights and body condition scores were still higher in HP-HL than in LP-LL lambs at 2 years of age (P < 0·05). Abomasum weights were higher in HP than in LP lambs at birth and higher in HP-HL than in LP-LL lambs at weaning in experiment 1 and the weights of the rumen and dimensions of the rumen villi were greater in HP-HL than in LP-LL lambs at weaning in both experiments (P < 0·05). The treatments had no effect on lipid content or mean adipocyte diameter in the main fat depots at birth or weaning. There were no treatment effects on VFI in either experiment. It was concluded that restricted nutrition during late pregnancy and early lactation does not affect VFI between weaning and 2 years of age in sheep, even though there are differences in live weight and the development of the gastrointestinal tract at weaning and there may be long-term effects on live weight and body condition, particularly in male animals.

Activities of twelve hydrolytic enzymes in the digestive tract of young rabbits before weaning (4 weeks old) and adult rabbits (3 months old) were measured. The principal digestive enzymes in both groups of rabbits appeared to be amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), maltase (EC 3.2.1.20), pectinase (EC 3.2.1.15) and proteinases. The stomach of young rabbits contained most of the lipolytic activity and 45.7 % of the total proteolytic activity of the digestive tract. The highest specific activities (per g digesta) of amylase, maltase and proteinase in young rabbits were found in the small intestine. Total activities (per segment) of amylase and maltase in the small intestine and the caecum were similar. Activities of cellulase (EC 3.2.1.4), inulinase (EC 3.2.1.7) and β-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21) were low and activity of pectinase was fairly high in all segments of the digestive tract. The highest activity of urease (EC 3.5.1.5) was found in the caecum. Enzymic profiles of the colonic chymus resembled those of the caecum. Total hydrolytic activity was lower in the colon than in the caecum. Specific activities of amylase and invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) were lower and those of inulinase and lactase (EC 3.2.1.23) higher in 4-week-old rabbits than in 3-month-old rabbits. Gastric proteinase represented almost half of the total proteolytic activity of the digestive tract, whereas lipolytic activity of gastric contents was not found in measurable quantities in adult rabbits. The caecal contents of adult rabbits contained most of the total activity of lipase (EC 3.1.1.3), cellulase, xylanase (EC 3.2.1.32), pectinase, lactase, invertase, β-glucosidase and urease present in the digestive tract. The presence of microbial enzymes (pectinase, cellulase, xylanase, inulinase and urease) in non-fermentative segments of the digestive tract reflects the reingestion of caecal contents during coprophagy.

The effect of time after feeding on the distribution of nitrogen (N) in digesta from various segments of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in sheep given a diet of chopped hay once daily. Four groups of four animals were slaughtered at 2, 8,16 and 24 h after feeding and digesta were separated into large (>1180μm), medium (300 to 1180 μm) small (45 to 300 μm) and fine particles and liquid (<45 μm) fractions. The N pool in the reticulorumen decreased with time after feeding but post-ruminal N pools changed very little. Changes in N distribution within the reticulorumen reflected reductions in large particles and increases in fine particles and liquid fractions, the intermediate fractions remaining fairly constant.
