State Medical Aid is a public health insurance program that allows undocumented immigrants with low financial resources to access health care services for free. However, the low take-up rate of this program might threaten its efficiency. The purpose of this study is therefore to provide the determinants of such a low take-up rate. To this end, we rely on the Premier Pas survey. This is an original representative sample of undocumented immigrants attending places of assistance to vulnerable populations in France. Determinants of State Medical Aid take-up are analyzed through probit and Cox modeling. The results show that only 51% of those who are eligible for the State Medical Aid program are actually covered, and this proportion is higher among women than among men. The length of stay in France is the most important determinant of take-up. It is worth noting that State Medical Aid take-up is not associated with chronic diseases or functional limitations and is negatively associated with poor mental health. There is, therefore, mixed evidence of health selection into the program. Informational barriers and vulnerabilities experienced by undocumented immigrants are likely to explain this low take-up.

The present study was carried out to estimate lamb survival (in days) from birth to weaning under survival analysis using data records from 2057 Harnali lambs born to 134 sires and 623 dams between the period from 2001 to 2020. The weaning age in resourced population was 90 days from birth. The hazard ratio in terms of risk of death up to weaning was determined using Cox proportional hazards model by subjecting some fixed factors such as year of birth, sex of lamb, birth weight (kg), dam’s weight at lambing (kg) and dam’s age at lambing (years). The overall survivability up to weaning among lambs was 91.59% and Kaplan–Meier estimates of mean survival time up to weaning was 85.77 days. Cox proportional hazard modelling revealed that the hazards of death up to weaning was higher in male lambs [1.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22–2.26] compared with female lambs [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.00]. It was also observed that the hazards of death (HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.88–0.94) had decreasing trends over years. For birth weight (kg), hazard rate was 0.34 (95% CI: 0.25–0.46), which indicated that the risk of pre-weaning mortality was lower as birth weight increases. The weight and age of dams at lambing did not influence the survival time of studied population. The present findings indicated that survival time increased in studied lambs over the years and it could be increased more by giving more emphasis on better litter weight and general health aspects at farm level.

Incurred but not reported (IBNR) loss reserving is of great importance for Property & Casualty (P&C) insurers. However, the temporal dependence exhibited in the claim arrival process is not reflected in many current loss reserving models, which might affect the accuracy of the IBNR reserve predictions. To overcome this shortcoming, we proposed a marked Cox process and showed its many desirable properties in Badescu et al. (2016).

In this paper, we consider the model estimation and applications. We first present an expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm which guarantees the efficiency of the estimators unlike the moment estimation methods widely used in estimating Cox processes. In addition, the proposed fitting algorithm can be implemented at a reasonable computational cost. We examine the performance of the proposed algorithm through simulation studies. The applicability of the proposed model is tested by fitting it to a real insurance claim data set. Through out-of-sample tests, we find that the proposed model can provide realistic predictive distributions.

Duration analyses in political science often model nonproportional hazards through interactions with analysis time. To facilitate their interpretation, methodologists have proposed methods to visualize time-varying coefficients or hazard ratios. While these techniques are a useful, initial postestimation step, I argue that they are insufficient to identify the overall impact of a time-varying effect and may lead to faulty inference when a coefficient changes its sign. I show how even significant changes of a coefficient’s sign do not imply that the overall effect is reversed over time. In order to enable a correct interpretation of time-varying effects in this context, researchers should visualize their results with survivor functions. I outline how survivor functions are calculated for models with time-varying effects and demonstrate the need for such a nuanced interpretation using the prominent finding of a time-varying effect of mediation on interstate conflict. The reanalysis of the data using the proposed visualization methods indicates that the conclusions of earlier mediation research are misleading. The example highlights how survivor functions are an essential tool to clarify the ambiguity inherent in time-varying coefficients in event history models.

In most studies on beef cattle longevity, only the cows reaching a given number of calvings by a specific age are considered in the analyses. With the aim of evaluating all cows with productive life in herds, taking into consideration the different forms of management on each farm, it was proposed to measure cow longevity from age at last calving (ALC), that is, the most recent calving registered in the files. The objective was to characterize this trait in order to study the longevity of Nellore cattle, using the Kaplan–Meier estimators and the Cox model. The covariables and class effects considered in the models were age at first calving (AFC), year and season of birth of the cow and farm. The variable studied (ALC) was classified as presenting complete information (uncensored = 1) or incomplete information (censored = 0), using the criterion of the difference between the date of each cow's last calving and the date of the latest calving at each farm. If this difference was >36 months, the cow was considered to have failed. If not, this cow was censored, thus indicating that future calving remained possible for this cow. The records of 11 791 animals from 22 farms within the Nellore Breed Genetic Improvement Program (‘Nellore Brazil’) were used. In the estimation process using the Kaplan–Meier model, the variable of AFC was classified into three age groups. In individual analyses, the log-rank test and the Wilcoxon test in the Kaplan–Meier model showed that all covariables and class effects had significant effects (P < 0.05) on ALC. In the analysis considering all covariables and class effects, using the Wald test in the Cox model, only the season of birth of the cow was not significant for ALC (P > 0.05). This analysis indicated that each month added to AFC diminished the risk of the cow's failure in the herd by 2%. Nonetheless, this does not imply that animals with younger AFC had less profitability. Cows with greater numbers of calvings were more precocious than those with fewer calvings.

This paper surveys some statistical models of survival data. Competing risks models are described; the unidentifiability of net decrements suggests a sceptical approach to the use of underlying single decrement tables. Approaches based on observations of complete lifetimes (with censoring) are surveyed including the Kaplan-Meier and Nelson-Aalen estimates. Regression models for lifetimes depending on covariates are discussed, in particular the Cox model and partial likelihood estimation.

In this paper we present methods and results for the estimation and modelling of the recovery intensity for Income Protection (IP) insurance claims, allowing for different causes of claim. We use UK data supplied by the Continuous Mortality Investigation relating to claims paid in the years 1975 to 2002, inclusive. Each claim is classified by one of 70 possible causes according to ICD8.

We group causes where appropriate, and then use the Cox model and generalised linear models to model the recovery intensity.

In two subsequent papers we complete our modelling of IP claim termination rates by discussing the modelling of the mortality of IP claimants.

There are two main reasons why it is useful to incorporate cause of sickness in the modelling of IP claim terminations:

(i) The cause of sickness will be known to the insurer for a claim in the course of payment. A reserve can be set more accurately for such a claim if a model of the termination rates appropriate for this cause is available.

(ii) Different causes of claim will become more or less significant over time. For example, tuberculosis may have been an important cause of sickness in the past, but is likely to be far less significant now; the swine flu pandemic starting in 2009 is likely to have a significant effect on observed aggregate claim termination rates, skewing them towards higher rates at shorter durations. Information about trends in morbidity, together with a model of termination rates by cause of claim, allows future aggregate claim termination rates to be predicted more accurately, reserves to be set at more appropriate levels and policies to be priced more accurately.

One of the covariates included in our models for recovery intensities is Calendar Year. Aggregate recovery intensities have been decreasing over the period considered, 1975 to 2002, and this is generally reflected in the models for recovery intensities by cause of sickness. However, when these intensities are projected for years beyond 2002, the results are not always plausible.

Measures of divergence or discrepancy are used either to measure mutual information concerning two variables or to construct model selection criteria. In this paper we focus on divergence measures that are based on a class of measures known as Csiszár's divergence measures. In particular, we propose a measure of divergence between residual lives of two items that have both survived up to some time t as well as a measure of divergence between past lives, both based on Csiszár's class of measures. Furthermore, we derive properties of these measures and provide examples based on the Cox model and frailty or transformation model.

A Cox risk process with a piecewise constant intensity is considered where the sequence (Li) of successive levels of the intensity forms a Markov chain. The duration σi of the level Li is assumed to be only dependent via Li. In the small-claim case a Lundberg inequality is obtained via a martingale approach. It is shown furthermore by a Lundberg bound from below that the resulting adjustment coefficient gives the best possible exponential bound for the ruin probability. In the case where the stationary distribution of Li contains a discrete component, a Cramér–Lundberg approximation can be obtained. By way of example we consider the independent jump intensity model (Björk and Grandell 1988) and the risk model in a Markovian environment (Asmussen 1989).
