This study builds upon our prior work to further explore and unravel the effects of saturated thermal conduction within a viscous resistive MHD framework on the intricate transport mechanisms of angular momentum and energy in disc-jet systems. We conducted a series of 2.5-dimensional non-relativistic time-dependent numerical simulations using the PLUTO code. Employing a saturation parameter spanning [0.002-0.01], our results are consistent with previous investigations that omitted consideration of thermal conduction, affirming the established understanding that kinetic torque plays a predominant role in governing the total accretion angular momentum, surpassing the magnetic contribution within the disc. At the initial time steps of our calculations, we find that thermal conduction enhances this kinetic contribution, while concurrently diminishing the effect of magnetic contribution. In contrast to the prevailing influence of kinetic torque within the disc, we also assert the magnetic torque as the primary contributor to the total ejection angular momentum. We further unveil that doubling the saturation parameter leads to bolstering of approximately $23.7\%$ in the integral dominance of magnetic torque compared to kinetic torque within the jet. Our findings reveal that doubling the effect of thermal conduction improves the integral total accretion power by approximately 2%, thereby slightly amplifying the energy content within the system and increasing overall energy output. We underscore that as the local energy dissipation within the disc intensifies, the significance of the enthalpy accretion flux increases at the expense of the jet power. We reveal that increasing the saturation parameter mitigates enthalpy accumulation within the disc, and further restricts the jet’s energy extraction from the disc. This limitation is determined in our analysis through the decrease in the integral ratio between the bipolar jet and liberated power of approximately $13.8\%$, for twice the strength of the saturation parameter. We identify the Poynting flux as the primary contributor to total jet power, with thermal conduction exerting minimal influence on magnetic contributions. Additionally, we emphasise the integration of jet enthalpy as another significant factor in determining overall jet power, highlighting a distinct correlation between the rise in saturation parameter and heightened enthalpy contribution. Moreover, we observe the promotion of Poynting flux over kinetic flux at advanced time steps of our simulations, a trend supported by the presence of thermal conduction, which demonstrates an integral increase of approximately $11.2\%$ when considering a doubling of the saturation parameter.

Both observations and theoretical studies have convincingly shown that outflows (i.e., wind and jet) are common phenomena from black hole accretion systems with various accretion rates, although the physical driving mechanisms are not exactly same for different accretion modes. Outflows are not only important in the dynamics of black hole accretion, but also play an important role in AGN feedback; therefore it is crucial to investigate their main physical properties including mass flux and velocity. In this paper we summarize recent studies in investigating the properties and driving mechanisms from black hole accretion flows with various accretion rates.

Supermassive stars have been proposed as the solution to a number of longstanding problems in globular cluster formation. The hypothetical stars have been suggested as potential polluters responsible for the observed chemical peculiarities within those clusters. In recent hydrodynamic simulations, we have demonstrated that accretion discs around such stars are stable even with large stellar accretion and flyby rates and produce H2O kilomasers. We propose that the W1 kilomaser, associated with a super star cluster in the starburst galaxy NGC 253, may arise in an accretion disc around a supermassive star with a mass of around 4000 Mʘ.

We explore the effect of anisotropic wind driving on the properties of accretion onto black holes (BHs) in close binaries. We specifically focus on line-driven winds, which are common in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). In close binary systems, the tidal force from the companion star can modify the wind structure in two different ways. One is the reduction of wind terminal velocity due to the weaker effective surface gravity. The other is the reduction in mass flux due to gravity darkening (GD). We incorporate these effects into the so-called CAK theory in a simple way and investigate the wind flow around the accretor on the orbital scale. We find that a focused accretion stream is naturally formed when the Roche lobe filling factor is ${\gtrsim}0.8$ –0.9, analogous to that of wind Roche lobe overflow, but only when the velocity reduction is taken into account. The formation of a stream is necessary to bring in sufficient angular momentum to form an accretion disc around the BH. GD effects reduce the amount of accreted angular momentum, but not enough to prevent the formation of a disc. Based on these results, we expect there to be a discrete step in the observability of HMXBs depending on whether the donor Roche lobe filling factor is below or above ${\sim}$ 0.8–0.9.

Pulsating Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (PULXs) are thought to be X-ray bright, accreting, magnetized neutron stars, and could be the first and only evidence for the existence of magnetars in binary systems. Their apparent soft (< 20 keV) X-ray luminosity can exceed the Eddington luminosity for a neutron star (NS) by a few orders of magnitude. Although several scenarios have been proposed to explain the different components observed in the X-ray spectra and the characteristics of the X-ray lightcurve of these system, detailed quantitative calculations are still missing. In particular, the observed soft X-ray lightcurves are almost sinuosidal and show an increase in the pulsed fraction (from 8% up to even 30%) with increasing energy. Here, we present how emission originating from an optically thick envelope, expected to be formed during super-Eddington accretion, can result in pulsed fractions similar to observations.

In this paper, we present the stationary axisymmetric configuration of a resistive magnetised thick accretion disc in the vicinity of external gravity and intrinsic dipolar magnetic field of a slowly rotating black hole. The plasma is described by the equations of fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) along with the Ohm’s law and in the absence of the effects of radiation fields. We try to solve these two-dimensional MHD equations analytically as much as possible. However, we sometimes inevitably refer to numerical methods as well. To fully understand the relativistic geometrically thick accretion disc structure, we consider all three components of the fluid velocity to be non-zero. This implies that the magnetofluid can flow in all three directions surrounding the central black hole. As we get radially closer to the hole, the fluid flows faster in all those directions. However, as we move towards the equator along the meridional direction, the radial inflow becomes stronger from both the speed and the mass accretion rate points of view. Nonetheless, the vertical (meridional) speed and the rotation of the plasma disc become slower in that direction. Due to the presence of pressure gradient forces, a sub-Keplerian angular momentum distribution throughout the thick disc is expected as well. To get a concise analytical form of the rate of accretion, we assume that the radial dependency of radial and meridional fluid velocities is the same. This simplifying assumption leads to radial independency of mass accretion rate. The motion of the accreting plasma produces an azimuthal current whose strength is specified based on the strength of the external dipolar magnetic field. This current generates a poloidal magnetic field in the disc which is continuous across the disc boundary surface due to the presence of the finite resistivity for the plasma. The gas in the disc is vertically supported not only by the gas pressure but also by the magnetic pressure.

The mass accretion rate determines the black hole accretion mode and the corresponding efficiency of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback. In large-scale simulations studying galaxy formation and evolution, the Bondi radius can be at most marginally resolved. In these simulations, the Bondi accretion formula is always used to estimate the black hole accretion rate. The Bondi solution can not represent the real accretion process. We perform 77 simulations with varying density and temperature at Bondi radius. We find a formula to calculate the black hole accretion rate based on gas density and temperature at Bondi radius. We find that the formula can accurately predict the luminosity of observed low-luminosity AGNs. This formula can be used in sub-grid models in large-scale simulations with AGNs feedback.

Common envelope evolution (CEE) occurs in some binary systems involving asymptotic giant branch (AGB) or red giant branch (RGB) stars, and understanding this process is crucial for understanding the origins of various transient phenomena. CEE has been shown to be highly asymmetrical and global 3D simulations are needed to help understand the dynamics. We perform and analyze hydrodynamic CEE simulations with the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code AstroBEAR, and focus on the role of accretion onto the companion star. We bracket the range of accretion rates by comparing a model that removes mass and pressure using a subgrid accretion prescription with one that does not. Provided a pressure-release valve, such as a bipolar jet, is available, super-Eddington accretion could be common. Finally, we summarize new results pertaining to the energy budget, and discuss the overall implications relating to the feasibility of unbinding the envelope in CEE simulations.

Observations of low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) and the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) show that the wind exists. Black hole in LLAGNs and hard state of BHBs accretes gas in hot accretion mode. In this paper, we first use magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of hot accretion flow around a black hole to study the origin of the wind. We find that the wind is driven by the combination of gradients of gas and magnetic pressure and centrifugal forces. Second, we use simulations with focus on the region around Bondi radius to study whether the wind can be generated outside Bondi radius. In the simulation studying hot accretion flow around Bondi radius, in addition to the black hole gravity, we also take into account the gravity of nuclei stars. We find that the wind can not be generated outside Bondi radius. The absence of the wind is due to the change of gravity potential.

Various observations show peculiar features in the Galactic Center region, such as loops and filamentary structure. It is still unclear how such characteristic features are formed. Magnetic field is believed to play very important roles in the dynamics of gas in the Galaxy Center. Suzuki et al. (2015) performed a global magneto-hydrodynamical simulation focusing on the Galactic Center with an axisymmetric gravitational potential and claimed that non-radial motion is excited by magnetic activity. We further analyzed their simulation data and found that vertical motion is also excited by magnetic activity. In particular, fast down flows with speed of ~100 km/s are triggered near the footpoint of magnetic loops that are buoyantly risen by Parker instability. These downward flows are accelerated by the vertical component of the gravity, falling along inclined field lines. As a result, the azimuthal and radial components of the velocity are also excited, which are observed as high velocity features in a simulated position-velocity diagram. Depending on the viewing angle, these fast flows will show a huge variety of characteristic features in the position-velocity diagram.

We discuss the factors influencing the formation and gravitational fragmentation of protostellar discs. We start with a review of how observations of prestellar cores can be analysed statistically to yield plausible initial conditions for simulations of their subsequent collapse. Simulations based on these initial conditions show that, despite the low levels of turbulence in prestellar cores, they deliver primary protostars and associated discs which are routinely subject to stochastic impulsive perturbations; consequently misalignment of the spins and orbits of protostars are common. Also, the simulations produce protostars that collectively have a mass function and binary statistics matching those observed in nearby star-formation regions, but only if a significant fraction of the turbulent energy in the core is solenoidal, and accretion onto the primary protostar is episodic with a duty cycle $\stackrel{>}{\sim }3\,000\,{\rm yr}$. Under this circumstance, a core typically spawns between 4 and 5 protostars, with high efficiency, and the lower mass protostars are mainly formed by disc fragmentation. The requirement that a proto-fragment in a disc lose thermal energy on a dynamical timescale dictates that there is a sweet spot for disc fragmentation at radii $70\,{\rm AU}\stackrel{<}{\sim }R\stackrel{<}{\sim }100\,{\rm AU}$ and temperatures $10\,{\rm K}\stackrel{<}{\sim }T\stackrel{<}{\sim }20\,{\rm K}$, and this might explain the brown dwarf desert.

In the past decade, observational evidence that Globular Clusters (GCs) harbour multiple stellar populations has grown steadily. These observations are hard to reconcile with the classical picture of star formation in GCs, which approximates them as a single generation of stars. Bastian et al. recently suggested an evolutionary scenario in which a second, chemically distinct, population is formed by the accretion of chemically enriched material onto the protoplanetary disc of low-mass stars in the initial GC population. Using assumptions that represent the (dynamical) conditions in a typical GC, we investigate whether a low-mass star surrounded by a protoplanetary disc can accrete sufficient enriched material to account for the observed abundances in ‘second generation’ stars. We compare the outcome of two different smoothed particle hydrodynamics codes and focus on the lifetime and stability of the disc and on the gas accretion rate onto both the star and the disc.

The emission of steady compact jets observed in the hard spectral state of X-ray binaries is likely to be powered by internal shocks caused by fluctuations of the outflow velocity. The dynamics of the internal shocks and the resulting spectral energy distribution (SED) of the jet is very sensitive to the shape of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor. It turns out that Lorentz factor fluctuations injected at the base of the jet with a flicker noise power spectrum (i.e. P(f) ∝1/f) naturally produce the canonical flat SED observed from radio to IR band in X-ray binary systems in the hard state. This model also predicts a strong, wavelength dependent, variability that resembles the observed one. In particular, strong sub-second variability is predicted in the infrared and optical bands. The assumed fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor are likely to be triggered by the variability of the accretion flow which is best traced by the X-ray emission. In the case of GX339-4 for which high quality and simultaneous multi-wavelength data are available, we performed simulations assuming that the fluctuation of the jet Lorentz factor have the same PSD as the observed X-ray PSD. The synthetic SED calculated under this assumption provides a remarkable match to the observed radio to IR SED. In this case the model also produces strong mid-infrared spectral variability that is comparable to that reported in this source.

We model numerically the evolution of 104M⊙ turbulent molecular clouds in near-radial infall onto 106M⊙, equal-mass supermassive black hole binaries, using a modified version of the SPH code gadget-3. We investigate the different gas structures formed depending on the relative inclination between the binary and the cloud orbits. Our first results indicate that an aligned orbit produces mini-discs around each black hole, almost aligned with the binary; a perpendicular orbit produces misaligned mini-discs; and a counter-aligned orbit produces a circumbinary, counter-rotating ring.

There is a supermassive black hole, a gaseous accretion disk and compact star cluster in the center of active galactic nuclei, as known today. So the activity of AGN can be represented as the result of interaction of these three subsystems. In this work we investigate the dynamical interaction of a central star cluster surrounding a supermassive black hole and a central accretion disk. The dissipative force acting on stars in the disk leads to an asymmetry in the phase space distribution of the central star cluster due to the rotating accretion disk. In our work we present some results of Stardisk model, where we see some changes in density and phase space of central star cluster due to influence of rotating gaseous accretion disk.

Numerical simulations of hot accretion flows have shown that the mass accretion rate decreases with decreasing radius. Two models have been proposed to explain this result. In the adiabatic inflow-outflow solution (ADIOS), it is thought to be due to the loss of gas in outflows. In the convection-dominated accretion flow (CDAF) model, it is explained as because that the gas is locked in convective eddies. In this paper we use hydrodynamical (HD) and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations to investigate which one is physical. We calculate and compare various properties of inflow (gas with an inward velocity) and outflow (gas with an outward velocity). Systematic and significant differences are found. For example, for HD flows, the temperature of outflow is higher than inflow; while for MHD flows, the specific angular momentum of outflow is much higher than inflow. We have also analyzed the convective stability of MHD accretion flow and found that they are stable. These results suggest that systematic inward and outward motion must exist, i.e., the ADIOS model is favored. The different properties of inflow and outflow also suggest that the mechanisms of producing outflow in HD and MHD flows are buoyancy associated with the convection and the centrifugal force associated with the angular momentum transport mediated by the magnetic field, respectively. The latter mechanism is similar to the Blandford & Payne mechanism but no large-scale open magnetic field is required here. Possible observational applications are briefly discussed.

The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is widely believed to be the source of turbulence in accretion discs. This turbulence is responsible for the anomalous angular momentum transport in accretion discs. The turbulence will affect other aspects of the dynamics of the disc as well, and we will concentrate on two such issues: a) what kind of oscillations can be excited by the turbulence itself, and b) how the turbulence is interacting with modes that have been excited by some other agent. This is of interest in understanding the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that have been observed in the X-ray light curves of accreting neutron star and black hole binaries. We carry out local three dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a keplerian differentially rotating accretion disc, using a shearing box configuration taking in account the effects of the vertical stratification.

The kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) have been found in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs), which present the millisecond timing phenomena close to the surface of the compact objects. We briefly summarize the following contents: (1). The correlations and distributions of twin kHz QPOs; (2). The relations of high-low frequency QPOs; (3). The QPO properties of NS Atoll and Z sources; (4). No clear direct correlations between NS spins and QPOs; (5). The mechanisms of kHz QPOs; (6). The implications of kHZ QPOs, e.g., NS mass and radius, disk thickness and magnetic field of Atoll and Z source.

Gravitational microlensing by the stellar population of lensing galaxies provides an important opportunity to spatially resolve the accretion disk structure in strongly lensed quasars. Some of the objects (like Einstein's cross) are reasonably consistent with the predictions of the standard accretion disk model. In other cases, the size of the emitting region is larger than predicted by the standard thin disk theory and practically independent on wavelength. This may be interpreted as an observational manifestation of an optically-thick scattering envelope possibly related to super-Eddington accretion with outflows.

The model of a young star with a low-mass secondary component (q = M2/M1 ≤ 0.1) accreting matter from a circumbinary (CB) disc is considered. It is assumed that the orbit and the CB disc can be coplanar and non-coplanar. The model parameters were varied within the following ranges: the component mass ratio q ranged from 0.1 to 0.003, the eccentricity e varied from 0 to 0.7, the inclination of the orbit plane to the CB disc ranged from 0 to 10 degrees, and the parameter that defines the viscosity of the system was also varied. A number of hydrodynamics models of such a system have been calculated by the SPH method and then the variations of the circumstellar extinction and phase brightness curves were determined. The calculated brightness curves differ in shape and amplitude and it depends on the model parameters and the orientation of the system relative to the observer. The results were used to analyze the cyclic activity of UX Ori type stars.
