From G. F. Becker's and L. V. Pirsson's early enunciations linking the dynamics of magma chambers to the rock records of sills and plutons to this day, two features stand at the centre of nearly every magmatic process: solidification fronts and phenocrysts. The structure and behaviour of the envisioned solidification front, however, has been mostly that akin to non-silicate, non-multiply-saturated systems, which has led to confusion in appreciating its role in magmatic evolution. The common habit of intruding magmas to carry significant amounts of phenocrysts, which can lead to efficient fractionation, layering, and interstitial melt flow within extensive mush piles, when coupled with solidification fronts, allows a broad understanding of the processes leading to the rock records of sills and lava lakes. These same processes are fundamental to understanding all magmas.

The spatial manifestation of the liquidus and solidus is the Solidification Front (SF); all magmas, stationary or in transit, are encased by SFs. In the ideal case of an initially crystal-free, cooling magma, crystallinity increases from nucleation on the leading liquidus edge to a holocrystalline rock at the trailing solidus. The package of SF isotherms advances inward, thickening with time and, depending on location — roof, floor, or walls — and the initial crystallinity of the magma, is instrumental in controlling magmatic evolution. Bimodal volcanism as well as much of the structure of the oceanic crust may arise from the behaviour of SFs.

In mafic magmas, somewhere near a crystallinity (N) of 55% (vol), depending on the phase assemblage, the SF changes from a viscous fluid (suspension (0<N<25) and mush (25<N<55%)) to an elastic crystalline network (rigid crust (55<N<100%)) of some strength containing interstitial residual melt. With thickening of the roofward SF of some mafic magmas, the weight of the leading, viscous portion repeatedly tears the crust near N ∼ 55–60%, efficiently segregating the local residual melt into zones of interdigitating silicic lenses. This is SF instability (SFI), a process of possible importance in continental crust initiation and evolution, in producing silicic segregations in oceanic crust, and in recording the inability of the viscous part of the upper SF ever to detach wholly in typical (<∼ 1 km) sheet-like magmas. These granophyric and pegmatitic segregations, individually reaching 1–2 m in thickness and 30–50 m in length, form thick (∼ 50–75 m) zones that can be misconstrued as sandwich horizons where the last liquids might have accumulated. In effectively splitting the magma chemically and spatially, SFI is, in essence, a form of chaos (i.e. silicic chaos).

Differentiation of initially crystal-free, stationary magmas is limited to processes occurring within SFs, which operate in competition with the rate of inward advancement of solidification. Local processes operating on characteristic time scales longer than the time for the SF to advance a distance equal to its own thickness are suppressed. Enormous increases in viscosity outward within the viscous, leading portion of the SF efficiently partition the distribution of melt accessible to eruption. Eruptible melts lie essentially inward of the SF and are thus severely restricted in silica enrichment. The silica-enriched SFI melts are thus generally inaccessible to collection and eviction unless the host SF is reprocessed or “burned back” through, respectively, later regional magmatism or massive, late-stage re-injection. And because of large viscosity contrasts between SFI melts and host basalts, once freed, SFI melts are literally impossible to homogenize back into the system and may collect and compact against the roof to form large silicic masses. Unusually voluminous, bulbous masses of silicic granophyre present along, and sometimes warping, the roofs of large diabase sills may reflect collections of remobilized blobs of SFI melts. These bulbous masses may be later added to the continental crust through solid state creep.

In sheets made of phenocryst-rich, singly saturated magma, most phenocrysts are able through settling or floating to avoid capture by the advancing SFs. Significant differentiation is possible through extensive settling of initial phenocrysts and upward leakage of interstitial residual melt from the associated cumulate pile, which over-thickens the lower SF, greatly tipping the competitive edge against suppression of melt leakage by advancing solidification. Dense interstitial melts may similarly drain from roofward cumulates of light phenocrysts. The variation in crystal size and modal abundance in these cumulate piles are intimate records of prior crystallization, transport, and filling.

Magmas in transit erode SFs and thoroughly charge the magma with crystals, facilitating fractionation and differentiation, especially if the body occasionally comes to rest. The key to protracted differentiation through fractional crystallization is not crystallization in stationary, closed chambers, but the repeated transport and chambering of magma or the periodic resupply to chambers of phenocryst-rich magma. This is punctuated differentiation, which may be the general case. Close corollaries are that thick, closed sheets of initially crystal-free, multiply-saturated magma undergo precious little overall differentiation, and that deciphering the sequence and crystallinity, including in transit phenocryst entrainment, growth, and sorting, of the filling events is central to unravelling intrusive history.

Variations in temperature, whether on phase diagrams or in actual magmas, are intrinsically linked to commensurate variations in space and time in magmatic systems. The spectrum of all physical and chemical processes associated with magma is accordingly strongly partitioned in space and time.

The idea of a magma chamber as a vat of low crystallinity melt crystallizing everywhere within and differentiating through crystal settling is unrealistic. A magma chamber formed of any number of crystal-laden inputs, encased by inward-propagating, dynamic solidification fronts, and where significant differentiation is tied to the dynamics of late-stage, interstitial melt within extensive mush piles is more in accord with the rock record.

Wedge-shaped layers of ultramafic and mafic cumulates in Intrusion II of the Caledonian Honningsvåg Intrusive Suite suggest crystallization on an inclined magma chamber floor from a compositionally-zoned and density-stratified magma.

Cyclic unit 8 (140–100 m thick) consists of a distally-thinning olivine gabbro (denoted paoC) macrolayer overlain by a distally-thickening gabbronorite, pahC. New mineral data in four traverses across cyclic unit 8 show systematic compositional changes; the Mg# of the mafic phases decreases upwards through the unit and distally, both along the base and along the paoC/pahC interface.

A crystallization model based on an effectively continuously-zoned magma chamber with numerous, relatively thin, double-diffusive magma layers is proposed. Differential migration of horizontal isopleths (e.g. Mg# and aSiO2) in response to fractional crystallization and assimilation of country rock can explain the variations in the Mg# of the cumulates.

Field relations in the upper part of Intrusion II of the Caledonian Honningsvåg Intrusive Suite show that some peridotite sheets transgress, and include in situ rafts of, the adjacent gabbroic cumulates. Modal and textural analyses of three olivine melagabbro sheets show non-cotectic mineral proportions that are likely to result from crystal-melt reactions. Discordant, replacive fingers and pipes of feldspathic peridotite along interfaces between peridotite and overlying olivine melagabbro also suggest crystal-melt reactions.

It is proposed that several picritic sills intruded porous gabbroic cumulates in the upper part of Intrusion II. Lateral infiltration of picritic magma led to crystal-melt reactions, mainly assimilation of plagioclase and precipitation of olivine, resulting in the formation of olivine melagabbro and peridotite sheets, and replacive fingers and pipes of feldspathic peridotite.

The Shiant Isles Main Sill, of Tertiary age, is a classic example of a composite, differentiated alkaline basic sill. The first unit to be intruded was a 2 m thick olivine teschenite which was emplaced with phenocrysts of olivine (mg > 83) [mg ≡ Mg#] and, perhaps, plagioclase. This was intruded by a 24 m thick picrite sill consisting of a mush of melt and suspended olivine phenocrysts (mg > 83) with a D-shaped modal profile. The 140 m thick picrodolerite-crinanite unit was formed by a magma carrying ∼ 10% olivine (mg > 83) as the main phenocryst phase, together with some calcic plagioclase phenocrysts, being emplaced into the top of the picrite unit before the host rock was completely solidified. The olivine phenocrysts settled towards the bottom to form the picrodolerites. In-situ differentiation processes occurred under conditions of almost perfect fractional crystallization, during which very strongly zoned ophitic crystals of olivine (fayalitic rims) and clinopyroxene (hedenbergitic rims), and zoned laths of plagioclase (anorthoclase rims), formed. The last unit consists of ∼ 2 m of granular olivine picrodolerite which was intruded into the upper crinanites, again before the host rock was fully solid.

The mineral zoning patterns are interpreted using published cation diffusion coefficient data, and used to show that the picrite unit might have cooled to the blocking temperatures for Mg and Fe diffusion in < 5 years, and that even the relatively thick crinanite unit cooled very fast, so preserving the zoned Fe-Mg olivine and pyroxene compositions. The compositions of coexisting ilmenites and spinels define a redox trend which initially lies close to fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer conditions, but later becomes more reducing and approaches magnetite-wustite buffer conditions. The final stages of development occurred during sub-solidus deuteric processes and involved formation of analcime and zeolites, as well as localized sulphide mineralization.

We review recent advances on the physical principles of crystallization in multicomponent systems, and use them to provide a framework for interpreting petrological and geochemical observations from igneous intrusions. The thermal structure of crystallizing boundary layers imposes strong constraints on the chemical and mineralogical compositions of the solid that can form from a given melt. The thermal problem is largely independent of the chemical composition of the melt, and sets the course of crystallization. A key problem to understand is the temperature of the solidification front (which we take to mean that point at which the last drop of liquid solidifies) particularly in the geologically relevant case in which the temperature at the cold boundary is below the eutectic temperature. Focussing on the solidification front rather than on the liquidus is a valuable perspective. Adcumulus growth requires specific conditions and much can be learned from trying to understand how these can develop from given starting conditions. We discuss the physical reasons and field evidence for the existence of mushy layers, where solid fraction and temperature vary by large amounts. In such regions of the magma chamber, thermodynamic equilibrium is nearly achieved locally and, for a given temperature, this specifies the composition of the interstitial melt. Thus, in a magma chamber, the whole liquid line of descent is present simultaneously. Compositional convection is likely to set in, and this exchange between the interior of the mushy layer and the main reservoir leads to a chemically stratified solid, and to adcumulus growth. The contribution of crystal settling to the floor cumulates is evaluated as a function of the magnitude of convective heat flux through the roof. It is shown that crystal settling is unlikely to overwhelm in-situ nucleation and growth at the floor.

Compositional convection in magma chambers is thought to be an important process in the fractionation of liquid from crystals during the differentiation of magmas. It has been tested for in this study by undertaking isothermal crystal growth experiments in a silicate melt at atmospheric pressure in air. The melt used is a synthetic basalt in which iron is replaced by cobalt to minimise redox problems. Co-Mg olivine rims were overgrown on forsteritic olivine seeds cemented to the floor of a 2.4 cm deep alumina crucible. Following quenching and sectioning, glasses were examined optically for colour variations and by EPMA for compositional variations. It had been expected that the colour intensity of the blue glass would diminish in the Co-depleted zone that develops around crystal overgrowths, whereas in fact little difference is normally found, except for a slight fading of colour in glass above the apex of a seed in a few experiments. By contrast EPMA revealed zones up to 50 μm wide around seeds that are depleted in Co and Mg by up to 25 % at the crystal-glass interface and in patches above some crystals. Contour maps of X-ray count-rate data obtained in grids of analytical points show Co- and Mg-depleted glass around the overgrowths and in patches above the highest point of each seed, demonstrating that convection in the melt does occur during growth of individual crystals. As the experiments were carried out in a stable temperature gradient and the crystal seeds had no contact with the melt meniscus, thermal and surface-tensional convection are both eliminated, and the convection is inferred to be caused by a density difference resulting from compositional variation across the chemical boundary layer around a growing crystal. The density difference between the inside and outside of a boundary layer is calculated to be approximately −1%.

A detailed geochemical study is presented of the uppermost Critical Zone, especially of the footwall and hanging wall to the Merensky Reef, at Impala Platinum Mines in the Bushveld Complex. The approximately 100 m-thick sequence below the Merensky Reef consists of 13 distinct layers which have sharp boundaries. They are adcumulates with varying proportions of cumulus plagioclase, orthopyroxene and chromite.

Experimental studies on the composition of coexisting orthopyroxene liquid indicate that the magma which produced this sequence contained between 4 and 6% MgO. The magma from which the Merensky Reef formed was more evolved than the footwall magma.

Significant variations exist for both the En content of orthopyroxene and mg# number of whole-rock analyses in short vertical sections. Pyroxenite and norite always have higher values than anorthosite. Extremely sharp breaks in these values correlate with changes in modal proportions, and argue against both significant fractionation within the studied interval, and infiltration metasomatism. Quantitative modelling shows that the entire footwall section could have contained pyroxene with a uniform primary composition of En82, and that all the variation now observed reflects the effect of reaction with trapped magma.

Two independent methods for determining the proportion of trapped liquid are presented, based on mg# number and incompatible element abundances. Both yield a uniform proportion in all samples of approximately 10%. Immiscible sulphide liquid from the Merensky Reef can be shown to have infiltrated downwards for <5 m, despite its high density contrast with silicate magma, very low viscosity and low crystallization temperature. Residual silicate magma would have had even more restricted mobility. The migration of residual liquid or fluid through pothole structures in the floor of the Merensky Reef is not supported by the present data.

Lacking the pronounced modal layering of the underlying Critical Zone, the Main Zone of the Bushveld Complex nevertheless displays well-developed cryptic layering, expressed in a series of iron-enrichment trends, each defining a unit of the order of 100 to 200 m thick. At the base of one such unit, 1100 m above the Main Zone — Critical Zone contact, a 10 m thick pyroxenitic layer was intersected in an exploration borehole from the southern sector of the western Bushveld.

Within the pyroxenitic layer, mineral chemistry defines a series of five cycles of upward Mg and Cr enrichment in pyroxenes, and Ca enrichment in plagioclase. The mineral chemistry, supported by textural evidence, suggests the influx of successive surges of magma. Sustained streaming of magma gave rise to adcumulate textures in the central portion of each cycle, with orthocumulate textures at bases and tops of cycles representing waxing and waning stages of magma surges.

Porosity occlusion has been studied in a granodiorite rock from the Peruvian Coastal Batholith. The texture of the granodiorite is characteristic of Cordilleran I-type rocks, and the textural relations and modelled crystallization path within the quaternary An-Ab-Or-Qz system indicate alkali feldspar was the last major phase to start crystallizing. In thin section, alkali feldspar crystals occur both as large anhedral ‘plates’ containing numerous inclusions, and small interstitial cuneiform ‘pockets’. The alkali feldspar pockets are interpreted as late stage nucleation and growth of new crystals in pores that became isolated from the larger crystals during the latter stages of crystallization. Their geometry therefore mirrors that of the pores immediately after isolation.

From the modal abundance of the interstitial pockets, and taking into account contemporaneous growth of the other major phases, it is suggested that crystallization in isolated pores involved solidification of the final 3–4% of liquid. Alkali feldspar growth on the rims of the large anhedral plates prior to pore isolation is evidence for the localised (mm-cm scale) diffusion of chemical species within the interconnected melt phase. However, Rayleigh number calculations indicate that the separation of melt from crystals by compositional convection is unlikely to have occurred during interstitial crystallization.

At a number of locations along the Pacific margin of the Americas and west Antarctica, small volumes of alkalic basalts were erupted following successive ridge crest-trench collisions. The basalts were generated as a result of upwelling of asthenosphere through windows in the subducted plate. There is no evidence for local high temperature mantle plumes or significant lithospheric extension associated with these basalts. For the best sampled area, the Antarctic Peninsula, mean values for fractionation-corrected iron content (FeO*) vary from 6.9 to 10.6 wt.%, and for Na2O (Na8.0) from 3.25 to 4.6 wt.%, implying generation of small melt-fractions at variable mean pressures. The results of rare earth element inversion modelling yield a melt generation interval of 100 to 52 km, with a maximum melt fraction of c. 7% generated from a MORB-like source at Tp 1300°C. Trace element and isotope systematics are also consistent with the generation of the basalts from a MORB-like source.

Mean pressures of melt generation increase with increasing distance from the original trench, but trace element and Na8.0 data suggest that there is no systematic variation in extent of melting with distance from the trench. The data are consistent with a model whereby a MORB melting column, initially intersecting the peridotite solidus at between 15 and 30 kbar, is truncated by a lithospheric cap which thickens from c. 15–20 km (≈ 5–8 kbar) up to a maximum of c. 50 km (≈ 15 kbar), such that the mean pressures of melting increase with increasing distance from the palaeo-trench. The MORB-like major element geochemistry of basalt samples closest to the ancestral trench are consistent with initial intersection of the peridotite solidus at low pressures (c. 15 kbar). For areas of thickest lithosphere, mean pressures of melt generation are higher, but extents of melting are lower than for a MORB melting column with a similar initial pressure of intersection of the peridotite solidus. All these basalts therefore potentially represent analogues for the small melt-fraction precursors to the generation of MOR tholeiites.

Thermal constraints suggest that these low volume, small melt-fractions, were generated with CO2 on the solidus, because mean pressures of melt generation are greater than the pressure of intersection of the Tp 1300°C mantle adiabat and the dry peridotite solidus. Potentially, all MORB may be generated initially with CO2 on the solidus, and if this is correct, it does not require thermal anomalies to generate large extents of melting at high mean pressures.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 147 recently drilled at Site 895 in Hess Deep (eastern Equatorial Pacific), where a structurally dissected section of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) is preserved, and intersected the mantle-crust transition zone of a fast-spreading centre for the first time. The core from Hole 895D (latitude 2°16.635′N, longitude 101°26.777′W) revealed that harzburgite is predominant over dunite in the top section of the Hole, but the reverse relationship is found lower in the section where dunite is closely associated with gabbroic rocks (gabbro and troctolite). Texture, mineralogy and mineral chemistry suggest a two-stage evolution for harzburgite preserved at the transition zone. Harzburgite with a porphyroclastic texture was produced by partial melting of peridotite to, or beyond the clinopyroxene-out phase boundary before or during asthenospheric (>1000°C) flow, which suggests a higher degree of mantle melting than normally expected below mid-ocean ridges. Subsequently, basaltic melt(s) interacted with this refractory harzburgite (olivine + orthopyroxene + spinel), which resulted in dissolution of orthopyroxene, re-equilibration and formation of olivine and spinel, and formation of clinopyroxene ± plagioclase, this is manifested as a progressive conversion of harzburgite to gabbroic rock through an intermediate dunite. At low melt/peridotite ratios, harzburgite was refertilised as the plagioclase component of the melt completely reacted with the peridotite matrix to produce clinopyroxene-spinel intergrowths and Al enrichment in ferromagnesian minerals. At high ratios, orthopyroxene completely dissolved incongruently, plagioclase appeared, and spinel was partially to completely resorbed; this produced olivine-bearing and olivine-free gabbroic rocks. Residual minerals in peridotites adjacent to gabbroic zones were enriched in Fe and Ti and depleted in Al.

The North Qôroq syenite centre forms part of the Gardar Province of South Greenland. Extensive metasomatism, associated with the evolution of syenitic magmas, has resulted in redistribution of the rare-earth elements (REE), originally concentrated by magmatic processes, in both the syenites and surrounding granite-gneiss and quartzite country rocks. An important host for REE is apatite which can occur in significant quantities. Metasomatic apatites show complex, concentric, but irregular patterns of zonation, clearly seen using CL and BSE imaging. This zonation is related to successive pulses of metasomatising fluids. Electron microprobe analysis confirms the presence of significant quantities of REE in the apatites. The dominant cation exchange mechanism proposed is Ca2+ + P5+ ⇌ REE3+ + Si4+. In contrast to apatites from the nearby Ilímaussaq intrusion, there is no significant Na present in the structure and exchange reactions involving Na+ and REE3+ for Ca2+ have not occurred.

Apatites from the quartzite are fluor-apatites, while those from the granite-gneiss are more Cl-rich. These differences reflect the fact that granite-gneiss apatites are original and modified by metasomatism, whereas, those in the quartzite are metasomatic in origin. REE were probably transported as carbonate, fluoride or fluor-carbonate complexes, and reflect the activity of a F−-rich, CO2−3-rich fluid phase.

The geochemistry of late Caledonian minettes from across the orogenic belt is compared in order to constrain the composition of the Caledonian sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). All the minettes are similar petrographically and chemically and several samples have characteristics typical of near primary mantle melts. Samples from the Northern Highlands and the Caledonian foreland show enrichment in many trace elements (notably LILE and LREE) relative to those from the Grampians, the Southern Uplands and northern England, coupled with distinct Nd and Sr isotope characteristics. Processes such as fractional crystallization, crustal assimilation, and partial melting played a negligible role in creating the differences between the two groups which reflect long-term, time-integrated differences in the compositions of their SCLM sources. The Great Glen Fault appears to represent the boundary between these two lithospheric mantle domains. Other currently exposed Caledonian tectonic dislocations cannot be correlated directly with compositional changes within the SCLM. The chemical provinciality displayed by the minettes shows some resemblance to that within other late Caledonian igneous suites, including the newer granites, suggesting that the minettes may represent the lithospheric mantle contributions to these rocks.
