If R is a commutative unique factorization domain (UFD) then so is the ring R[x]. If R is not commutative then no such result is possible. An example is given of a bounded principal right and left ideal domain R, hence a similarity-UFD, for which the polynomial ring R[x] in a central indeterminate x is not a UFD in any reasonable sense. On the other hand, it is shown that if R is an invariant UFD then R[x] is a UFD in an appropriate sense.

Minsky and Papert claim that, for any positive integer n, there exist predicates of order 1 whose conjunction and disjunction have order greater than n. Their proof is amended and a stronger result obtained of which their claim is a special case.

Closed ideals in A(G) with bounded approximate identities are characterized for amenable [SIN]-groups and arbitrary discrete groups. This extends a result of Liu, van Rooij and Wang for abelian groups.

Some oscillation criteria for solutions of a general second order ordinary superlinear differential equation with alternating coefficients are given. The results generalize and complement some existing results in the literature.

Let us denote the Radon-Nikodym derivative of with respect to m by hi, i = 1, 2. The main result of this paper is that if and are both M-hyponormal with h1 ≤ M2(h2 o T2) a.e. and h2 ≤ M2(h1 o T1) a.e., then for all positive integers m, n and p, []* is -hyponormal. As a consequence, we see that if is an M-hyponormal composition operator, then is -hyponormal for all positive integers n.

The set C(G) of conjugacy classes of subgroups of a group G has a natural partial order. We study p-groups G for which C(G) has antichains of prescribed lengths.

Banach's contraction principle guarantees the existence of a unique fixed point for any contractive selfmapping of a complete metric space. This paper considers generalizations of the completeness of the space and of the contractiveness of the mapping and shows that some recent extensions of Banach's theorem carry over to spaces whose topologies are generated by families of quasi-pseudometrics.

This paper is concerned with a new notion of coherency for monoids. A monoid S is right coherent if the first order theory of right S-sets is coherent; this is equivalent to the property that every finitely generated S-subset of every finitely presented right S-set is finitely presented. If every finitely generated right ideal of S is finitely presented we say that S is weakly right coherent. As for the corresponding situation for modules over a ring, we show that our notion of coherency is related to products of flat left S-sets, although there are some marked differences in behaviour from the case for rings. Further, we relate our work to ultraproducts of flat left S-sets and so to the question of axiomatisability of certain classes of left S-sets.

We show that a monoid S is weakly right coherent if and only if the right annihilator congruence of every element is finitely generated and the intersection of any two finitely generated right ideals is finitely generated. A similar result describes right coherent monoids. We use these descriptions to recognise several classes of (weakly) right coherent monoids. In particular we show that any free monoid is weakly right (and left) coherent and any free commutative monoid is right (and left) coherent.

A complementary decomposition of λKn into a graph G is an edge-disjoint decomposition of λKn into copies of G such that if each copy H of G is replaced by its complement in V(H) then the result is an edge-disjoint decomposition of λKn into copies of GC it is a self- complementary decomposition if G = Gc. The spectrum for the last self-complementary graph on at most 7 vertices is found.

Let A be a subset of a Banach space E. A mapping T: A →A is called asymptoically semicontractive if there exists a mapping S: A×A→A and a sequence (kn) in [1, ∞] such that Tx=S(x, x) for all x ∈A while for each fixed x ∈A, S(., x) is asymptotically nonexpansive with sequence (kn) and S(x,.) is strongly compact. Among other things, it is proved that each asymptotically semicontractive self-mpping T of a closed bounded and convex subset A of a uniformly convex Banach space E which satisfies Opial's condition has a fixed point in A, provided s has a certain asymptoticregurity property.

Some results on fixed point of asymptotically regular multivalued mapping are obtained in metric spaces. The structure of common fixed points and coincidence points of a pair of compatible multivalued mappings is also discussed. Our work generalizes known results of Aubin and Siegel, Dube, Dube and Singh, Hardy and Rogers, Hu, Iseki, Jungck, Kaneko, Nadler, Ray and Shiau, Tan and Wong.

Three differently defined classes of two-symbol sequences, which we call the two-distance sequences, the linear sequences and the characteristic sequences, have been discussed by a number of authors and some equivalences between them are known. We present a self-contained proof that the three classes are the same (when ambiguous cases of linear sequences are suitably in terpreted). Associated with each sequence is a real invariant (having a different appropriate definition for each of the three classes). We give results on the relation between sequences with the same invariant and on the symmetry of the sequences. The sequences are closely related to Beatty sequences and occur as digitized straight lines and quasicrystals. They also provide examples of minimal word proliferation in formal languages.

A well-known theorem of Hardy and Littlewood gives a three-term asymptotic formula, counting the lattice points inside an expanding, right triangle. In this paper a generalisation of their theorem is presented. Also an analytic method is developed which enables one to interpret the coefficients in the formula. These methods are combined to give a generalisation of a “heightcounting” formula of Györy and Pethö which itself was a generalisation of a theorem of Lang.

Let Cb be the admissible functorial quasi-uniformity on the completely regular bispaces which is spanned by the upper quasi-uniformity on the real line. Answering a question posed by B. Banaschewski and G. C. L. Brümmer in the affirmative we show that CbX is transitive for every strongly zero-dimensional bispace X.

We prove Theorem 1: suppose G is a simple graph of order n having Δ(G) = n − k where k ≥ 5 and n ≥ max (13, 3k −3). If G contains an independent set of k − 3 vertices, then the TCC (Total Colouring Conjecture) is true. Applying Theorem 1, we also prove that the TCC is true for any simple graph G of order n having Δ(G) = n −5. The latter result together with some earlier results confirm that the TCC is true for all simple graphs whose maximum degree is at most four and for all simple graphs of order n having maximum degree at least n − 5.

Let k be an infinite cardinal, F a field, and let GL(k, F) be the group of all non-singular linear transformations on a ki-dimensional vector space V over F. Various examples are given of maximal subgroups of GL(k, F). These include (i) stabilizers of families of subspaces of V which are like filters or ideals on a set, (ii) almost stabilizers of certain subspaces of V, (iii) almost stabilizers of a direct decomposition of V into two k-dimensional subspaces.

It is also noted that GL(k, F) is not the union of any chain of length k of proper subgroups.

We shall prove an open mapping theorem concerning a Polish group acting transitively on a complete metric space.

Let M be a Γ-ring with right operator ring R. We define one-sided ideals of M and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the prime left ideals of M and R and hence that the prime radical of M is the intersection of its prime left ideals. It is shown that if M has left and right unities, then M is left Noetherian if and only if every prime left ideal of M is finitely generated, thus extending a result of Michler for rings to Γ-rings.

Bi-ideals and quasi-ideals of M are defined, and their relationships with corresponding structures in R are established. Analogies of various results for rings are obtained for Γ-rings. In particular we show that M is regular if and only if every bi-ideal of M is semi-prime.

In this paper we consider the groups G = G(α, n) defined by the presentations . We derive a formula for [G′: ″] and determine the order of G whenever n ≦ 7. We show that G is a finite soluble group if n is odd, but that G can be infinite when n is even, n ≧ 8. We also show that G(6, 10) is a finite insoluble group involving PSU(3, 4), and that the group H with presentation is a finite group of deficiency zero of order at least 114,967,210,176,000.
