A four-port ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with three notch bands is proposed in this work. The antenna uses ultra-thin flexible material liquid crystal polymer (LCP) as the substrate. Four identical monopole radiators are designed in this proposed antenna system. The notch bands of the antenna are generated by adding complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) and ring branch. A cross-shaped stub is set in the center of the four antenna units to enhance the isolation. The measured bandwidth of the antenna is 2.54–10.69 GHz, filtering out three notch frequency bands of 2.81–3.85, 5.11–5.98, and 7.34–8.69 GHz. The isolation in the entire working frequency is better than 22 dB. The bent performances of the MIMO system and the specific absorption rate (SAR) value are analyzed. The low SAR values, low envelope correlation coefficient (<0.05), high diversity gain (>9.999), and stable gain of the proposed antenna indicate that in UWB-MIMO systems and wearable Internet of Things applications, it can be widely used.

A broadband ±45° dual-polarized base-station antenna based on crossed-dipoles with parasitic elements has been presented in this study. This antenna consists of printed dipoles fed by integrated baluns, parasitic elements, and a ground plane below them. As a result of using parasitic elements on the dipoles and creating a suitable coupling between them, the antenna’s impedance bandwidth has been improved, and its dimensions have been reduced. The experimental results show that the proposed antenna can cover the frequency band of 1.58–2.73 GHz with |S11| < −15 dB and isolation better than 17 dB. The measured peak gain for the proposed antenna in the frequency band is reported as 7.8 dB. Also, the antenna’s half-power beamwidth equals 62.15° ± 1.45°. The proposed antenna is fabricated with overall dimensions of 0.67λ0 × 0.67λ0 × 0.17λ0 and has been measured in the antenna laboratory.

With the development of the communication field, more and more communication devices need multiple single-frequency antennas to work simultaneously. However, using multiple single-frequency antennas results in larger sizes. The miniaturized and dual-band communication system has become a new development trend. This paper designs a dual-band filtering patch antenna based on a multimode resonator, which is cascaded. The filter resonator part adopts step impedance resonance for branch shunt design, which can flexibly control the center frequency of two frequency bands. The filtering antenna utilizes a dual-layer substrate structure and achieves an integrated design through coupling probe feeding. This reduces the horizontal dimensions and improves miniaturization. Multiple radiation nulls are introduced outside the two-passband, and roll-off characteristics are evident. In addition, this design realizes high selectivity in the operating band. The antenna has large gains of 1.71 dBi and 6.25 dBi. It has good filtering and radiation characteristics.

In this paper, a low-profile antenna with characteristic of reconfigurable of dual bands’ pattern for 5G New Radio (NR) communication is proposed to mitigate the problems of signal fading and multipath propagation. The design incorporates a turnstile-shaped patch, a circular patch with etched rectangular slots and a discontinuous ring patch. The circular patch with etched rectangular slots and discontinuous ring patch are placed in the same plane to obtain dual band characteristic. The discontinuous ring patch works as a near-field resonant parasitic unit to improve the front-to-back ratio values at the resonance points and adjust the beam direction. Eight diodes are loaded to control the connection states of the rectangle slots on the circular patch. By combining an electric dipole formed by diode-controlled slot with a magnetic dipole formed by the turnstile-shaped patch, then a dual-band antenna with diverse patterns is designed. The measured results show that the designed antenna has dual-band characteristics and operates in the bands of 3.39–3.62 GHz and 4.77–5.01 GHz with peak gains of 3.6 dBi and 4.2 dBi, respectively. Furthermore, the measured radiation pattern results show that it is feasible to reconfigure the pattern in both bands simultaneously at 45° intervals.

This work introduces a novel compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna designed for wearable applications, employing a bioinspired structure and machine learning (ML) techniques to achieve exceptional performance in the 3.10–10.42 GHz range. The antenna is fabricated by positioning conductive fabric on a polydimethylsiloxane polymer of 1 mm thickness to augment high flexibility and durability. Additionally, it pioneers integrating a complete ground plane to mitigate back radiation toward the human body, presenting a compact (35.5 × 30.5 × 1 mm3) UWB antenna design compliant with IEEE 802.15.6 standards. The design methodology includes using bandwidth enhancement techniques such as chamfering edges, slots, and adding stubs in the feed, along with applying ML to optimize the antenna’s dimensions for desired return loss characteristics. The proposed antenna demonstrates exceptional resilience to human body loading and physical deformation. The simulation and measurement results have good agreement. The K-nearest neighbour method beat the other ML algorithms maximum accuracy of 99.62% to predict the S11. According to the author’s best knowledge, this is the first compact UWB antenna with full ground specified by IEEE.802.15.6 with ML reported.

This paper presents the design and analysis of a compact eight-port multiband multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for 5G smartphones. The proposed antenna structure is designed using meandering elements, as radiator, on the FR4 substrate of 150 × 80 × 0.8 mm with loss tangent (tan δ) of 0.02 and relative permittivity (εr) of 4.4. The proposed antenna resonates at 2.4, 3.5, and 5.5 GHz, and it covers the bandwidth of 2%, 6.28%, and 2.53%, respectively. The measured results provide an omnidirectional radiation pattern with 58%–78% of efficiency in all operating bands. The eight-port multiband MIMO design provides a high isolation of 17.5 dB, envelope correlation coefficient < 0.04, diversity gain of 9.98 dB, total active reflection coefficient < −10 dB, and channel capacity loss of <0.25 bits/s/Hz. Also, the hand phantom is designed to analyze the reflection coefficients and efficiency of the proposed antenna.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a broadband down-converter system using the AWR (Advancing the Wireless Revolution) modeling and Microwave Office tool. The radio frequency (RF) signal coming to the antenna interface requires a frequency down-converter to be lowered to the intermediate frequency (IF) band. It includes mixing blocks, oscillators, amplifiers, step attenuators, isolators, and filters. The input frequency band (RF) is 8250 ± 250 MHz, while the output frequency (IF) band is 720 ± 200 MHz. The gain dynamic range of the circuit is expanded through the use of digital attenuators. It is a superheterodyne down-conversion circuit, combining the IF band to produce the desired RF spectrum in one pass. Two phase-locked oscillators are used at the local oscillator port of the mixer, one providing a single frequency, while the other has a programmable frequency synthesizer with 1 MHz steps in the frequency range from 7280 to 7780 MHz.

This paper presents a Ka-band series single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch circuit realized in substrate-integrated coaxial line (SICL) environment for time division duplex operation. It is designed with a low-cost printed circuit board (PCB) technique. The size of the proposed circuit is $3.1\lambda_{g} \times 5.9\lambda_{g}$, where λg is the guided wavelength at the center frequency of 27.75 GHz. In this circuit, a SICL-based SPDT switching circuit is proposed with radio frequency (RF) isolation network where the shunt connection of butterfly stubs is in an asymmetric stripline environment. The proposed circuit exhibits less than 2 dB insertion loss at 27–27.9 GHz and less than 2.5 dB insertion loss at 27–28.5 GHz. The design offers good impedance matching in the Transmit (Tx) and Receive (Rx) channels from the common Tx/Rx input channel, along with more than 24 dB isolation between ON and OFF state output channels. The proposed circuit is suitable for millimeter-wave communication systems.

This paper presents a design methodology for a broadband high-efficiency power amplifier (PA). The large available impedance space of the extended continuous Class-GF mode is employed. A novel output matching network of the PA consisting of a rectangular double transmission line structure is proposed to meet impedance requirements. To validate the effectiveness of this structure, a high-efficiency PA operating in 0.8–3.0 GHz is designed using a CGH40010F GaN transistor. The measured results demonstrate that the drain efficiency falls within the range of 63.2%–71.9%, the output power varies from 40.2 to 42.2 dBm, and the gain ranges from 9.4 to 11.3 dB within the frequency band of 0.8–3 GHz. The realized PA exhibits an extremely competitive relative bandwidth of 115.8%.

An isolated low-profile multilayer all-ports-matched broadside-coupled balun (BCB) with arbitrary isolation bandwidth is presented. Analytical relations are derived and provided for the isolation circuit (IC) design in terms of electrical and physical parameters. Accordingly, instructions are given on obtaining optimum bandwidth and isolation responses for the IC. Design procedure for the BCB is presented together with a case study for power amplifier application. The BCB is validated theoretically, analytically, and experimentally, and results are in good agreement. The fabricated balun has insertion loss of 0.27 dB, input and output return losses of 19 dB, isolation of 20 dB at fc, and phase and magnitude imbalance better than 2° and 0.2 dB across the Bandwidth (BW), respectively. The realized isolated balun has dimensions of 0.06λg × 0.03λg.

Six four-element balun topologies are introduced that enable complex impedance matching in addition to common-mode rejection. Design equations for these topologies are presented. Three of these networks are universal, while the other three are capable of performing only specific impedance transformations. Examples of these networks were designed and fabricated along with a traditional lattice balun network for an operating frequency of 300 MHz. These networks were verified through extensive electromagnetic simulations and by measuring the fabricated networks. The fabricated novel network examples were able to achieve common-mode rejection ratios above 20 dB, power wave reflection coefficients below −20 dB, and insertion losses of approximately 0.1 dB; these results were similar to or better than the performance of the fabricated traditional lattice balun. The design example networks also provided power matching and low insertion loss over a greater bandwidth compared to the fabricated traditional network. These networks will allow for the footprints of lumped-element balun circuitry to be reduced, which is particularly useful in integrated circuit design. These topologies are also expected to further increase radio-frequency (RF) circuit design flexibility by offering more alternative realizations.

The accuracy of electromagnetic (EM) exposure assessments depends mainly on the resolution of a voxel human body model. The resolution of the conventional human body model is limited to a few millimeters. In the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency range, EM waves are absorbed by the superficial tissues in the human body. Therefore, resolution and skin thickness of the human body model are important for accuracy of the EM wave exposure metrics recommended by international human safety guidelines. Realistic thickness modeling of the skin tissue on the human body may provide greater accuracy in the EM exposure assessment, especially at mmWave frequency range. In this paper, effects of the skin thickness on the EM exposure metrics in one-dimensional multi-layered models obtained from different regions of the body model are investigated using the dispersive algorithm based on the finite-difference time-domain method over the frequency range from 1 to 100 GHz. Furthermore, effects of eyelid tissue in a human eye on the EM exposure metrics are studied over the frequency range. The EM exposure metrics such as absorbed power density, heating factor, and power transmission coefficient are calculated up to 100 GHz to evaluate the limits of EM wave exposure.

This paper introduces a method to realize beam switching by using a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) Butler matrix combined with a slot array antenna. The Butler matrix consists of two hybrid couplers, two crossovers, two −45-degree phase shifters, and two 0-degree phase shifters. The slot array antenna is a 4 × 2 array. The operating frequency band of the slot array antenna, where the reflection coefficient is below −10 dB, is 26.5–31.5 GHz. The measured beamforming angles from input port 1 to input Port 4 of the Butler matrix are +46, −16, +15, and −50°, respectively. The corresponding antenna gains from input Port 1 to input Port 4 are 11.57 dB, 14.284 dB, 10.94 dB, and 12.864 dB, respectively. The dimensions of the Butler matrix and the slot array antenna are 56.8 mm × 21.2 mm × 0.254 mm. The dimensions of the SIW transmission channels between the Butler matrix and input Ports 1– 4 are 16.9 mm × 34 mm × 0.254 mm.

This paper presents a dual-band bandpass filter with regular harmonic suppression. The proposed third-order filter consists of two microstrip stepped impedance resonators and single substrate integrated waveguide resonator. The mismatches in their higher order resonant frequencies are utilized to suppress the regular harmonics. The passbands are centered at f1 = 2.4 GHz and f2 = 3.5 GHz with fractional bandwidths of 5% and 7.5%, respectively. The measured midband insertion and return losses are better than 2.55 and 14.5 dB for the first, whereas for the second band, they are better than 1.95 and 14 dB. The filter offers at least 33 dB suppression of first three higher order regular harmonics of f1 and f2.

A fourth-order bandpass filter with dual-wide passbands is proposed in this article. The novelty of the proposed work is the realization of a dual-band bandpass filter with closely spaced passbands, wide passband bandwidth, high rejection between the passbands, using a novel combination of open stub tapped series coupled lines (CLs) and shunt transmission line loaded with end connected CLs. The characteristics of the proposed dual-wideband bandpass filter are investigated by adopting even–odd mode analysis. The transmission zeros generated by the transmission line loaded with an end-connected CL and open stub are utilized to achieve a high skirt rate. A rejection better than 55 dB is achieved with a single transmission zero between the two passbands indicating high isolation and close passbands. The dual-wideband filter is designed and manufactured to operate at 1.33 and 2.32 GHz. The experimented 3-dB fractional bandwidths of the two pass frequency bands are 40.6% and 24.13%. The proposed filter’s tested frequency responses agree well with simulated results. The proposed device can be used in various applications such as telecommunications, satellite communications, radar systems, imaging, and spectroscopy.

This article presents an ultrawide bandpass filter structure developed along a notch band using a small rectangular impedance resonator. The proposed filter structure consists of a coupled rectangular resonator (CRR), open stub, and composited split ring resonator (CSRR) at the bottom of the structure. In-band and out-of-band properties are improved by the CRR and open stub. The notch band is obtained by placing CSRR below the rectangular resonator. A filter with a compact size of 0.15 × 0.10 λg is obtained at a lowered cutoff frequency of 3.0 GHz, where λg is the corresponding guided wavelength. The proposed structure has been constructed on 5880 Rogers substrate with a thickness of 0.787 mm and a dielectric constant of 2.2. Additionally, equivalent lumped parameters were obtained, and a lumped equivalent circuit was created to explain how the suggested filter operated. The Electromagnetic (EM)-simulated results are in good agreement with the circuit-simulated and measured result. The various machine learning approaches such as artificial neural network, K-nearest neighbour, decision tree, random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting algorithms are applied to optimize the design, in which RF algorithms achieve more than 90% accuracy for predicting the S parameters of the ultrawideband filter.

In this paper, a novel dual-mode spherical resonator is proposed. By rotating the coupling irises, perturbations are generated to split the degenerate modes. The proposed filter is cascaded by a dual-mode resonator and two single-mode resonators, which are placed in a rotary way. Four poles appear in three resonators by only changing the rotation angle (φ) without any additional design. It forms the BSCT, generating a transmission zero (TZ) at the upper stopband. Furthermore, by adjusting φ further, the CT coupling topology can be obtained, resulting in a TZ at the lower stopband. Finally, slots are etched on the surface of the resonators for spurious response suppression. With the above methods, the out-of-band selectivity and suppression are greatly improved. For the fast validation, the filter is 3-D printed and measured. As a result, the measured results match well with the simulated ones.

This article presents a dual-band planar microwave sensor to characterize the permittivity of liquid samples. The sensor utilizes a splitter–combiner microstrip segment loaded with two pairs of triangular-shaped complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs). By integrating a meander slot into the CSRRs and incorporating inter-resonator coupling between the CSRRs, the proposed sensor achieves enhanced frequency shifts, resulting in improved sensitivity. An adulteration detection experiment is conducted to validate the sensor’s performance by mixing mineral oil into castor oil with a polydimethylsiloxane container placed on the sensing area. The variations in resonant frequency and peak attenuation are employed to extract the permittivity of the loaded liquid sample. The peak sensitivities in determining the real permittivity are measured to be 6.34% and 5.7% for the first and second frequency bands, respectively. The measured errors for extracting the real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivity are approximately 3.95% and 7.47% for the first frequency band and 3.67% and 6.28% for the second frequency band, respectively. The proposed dual-band microwave sensor, with its high sensitivity, compact size, small sample volume, and low cost, demonstrates great potential for applications in the quality monitoring of agricultural and industrial products.

Sakli et al. previously studied the propagation characteristics of wave modes in a metallic circular waveguide filled with anisotropic metamaterial [Int. J. Microw. Wirel. Technol. 9, 805–813 (2017)]. They derived and analyzed the wave equation and dispersion relations for TEz and TMz modes (i.e., TE and TM waves related to the z-axis) within the waveguide. However, they did not verify whether the system actually supports these TEz and TMz waves. This work aims to investigate that issue. Our findings indicate that, in general, a metallic circular waveguide filled with anisotropic metamaterial cannot support the propagation of TEz and TMz waves. Consequently, the results presented by Sakli et al. are incorrect.
