Tropical ageratum (Ageratum conyzoides L.) is a problematic weed frequently observed in association with commercially important crops in Australian agroecosystems. Knowledge of the germination response of A. conyzoides is crucial for proactively managing this weed species, especially when herbicide resistance is involved. Herbicide screening and metsulfuron dose–response experiments were conducted on two separate populations of A. conyzoides (referred to as Sugarcane and Roadside) in an open environment to identify a metsulfuron-resistant population. Based on the survival percentage in the metsulfuron dose–response experiment, the Sugarcane population was found to be 54 times more resistant compared with the metsulfuron-susceptible population (Roadside). Subsequent laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the differential germination response of the two populations. No germination or emergence difference was observed between the Sugarcane and Roadside populations under various thermal regimes (15/5 to 35/25 C with a 12/12-h photoperiod), salinity levels (0 to 320 mM), osmotic potentials (0 to −1.6 MPa), and burial depths (1 to 4 cm). However, different environmental conditions significantly impacted the germination and emergence of A. conyzoides. Ageratum conyzoides germinated over a wide range of temperatures, with the highest germination rate (>90%) occurring at 30/20 C. With increasing levels of salinity, osmotic potential, and burial depth, the germination/emergence of A. conyzoides declined and was completely inhibited at 300 mM salinity, −0.8 MPa osmotic potential, and a 1-cm burial depth. The data generated from this study will be useful in developing a model-based approach to predict the occurrence of this weed species and thus aid in designing ecologically sustainable integrated weed management protocols.

Soil amelioration via strategic deep tillage is occasionally utilized within conservation tillage systems to alleviate soil constraints, but its impact on weed seed burial and subsequent growth within the agronomic system is poorly understood. This study assessed the effects of different strategic deep-tillage practices, including soil loosening (deep ripping), soil mixing (rotary spading), or soil inversion (moldboard plow), on weed seed burial and subsequent weed growth, compared with a no-till control. The tillage practices were applied in 2019 at Yerecoin and Darkan, WA, and data on weed seed burial and growth were collected during the following 3-yr winter crop rotation (2019 to 2021). Soil inversion buried 89% of rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin) and ripgut brome (Bromus diandrus Roth) seeds to a depth of 10 to 20 cm at both sites, while soil loosening and mixing left between 31% and 91% of the seeds in the top 0 to 10 cm of soil, with broad variation between sites. Few seeds were buried beyond 20 cm despite tillage working depths exceeding 30 cm at both sites. Soil inversion reduced the density of L. rigidum to <1 plant m−2 for 3 yr after strategic tillage. Bromus diandrus density was initially reduced to 0 to 1 plant m−2 by soil inversion, but increased to 4 plants m−2 at Yerecoin in 2020 and 147 plants at Darkan in 2021. Soil loosening or mixing did not consistently decrease weed density. The field data were used to parameterize a model that predicted weed density following strategic tillage with greater accuracy for soil inversion than for loosening or mixing. The findings provide important insights into the effects of strategic deep tillage on weed management in conservational agricultural systems and demonstrate the potential of models for optimizing weed management strategies.

Heat disinfection of soil can be used to reduce the content of the soil seedbank. However, species differ in the lethal temperature needed for seed destruction and mortality. Laboratory research was conducted on the seeds of two weed species, redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and yellow foxtail [Setaria pumila (Poir.) Roem. & Schult]. The soil samples were collected at the experimental station Šašinovečki Lug, Zagreb, Croatia (45.850289°N, 16.180465°E), and exposed to linearly increasing constant temperatures of 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, and 120 C and exposure times of 30, 60, and 90 min in a laboratory oven. Weed seeds were then extracted from the soil using the sieve separation method and survival was measured by germinating seeds on filter paper. Germination counts were converted into percentages of mortality compared with untreated seeds. The results show that both temperature and exposure time significantly affected seed mortality of both weed species. Amaranthus retroflexus shows a greater susceptibility to high temperatures than S. pumila. A fitted three-parameter sigmoid model was used to define the relationship between temperature and exposure time needed for 50% (LT50) and 90% (LT90) seed mortality. The estimated LT50 values for A. retroflexus are 58.89 to 46.08 C over the 30- to 90-min exposure times; the estimated LT90 values were 113.36 to 65.72 C for the same durations. The estimated LT50 values for S. pumila over the 30- to 90-min exposure times ranged from 91.33 to 75.15 C; the estimated LT90 ranged from 98.79 to 90.32 C over the same durations. The research results contribute to the knowledge about the thermal sensitivity of seeds. Estimating efficacy of soil-heating treatments is essential when comparing the environmental, economic, and social costs of alternatives to conventional weed control methods.

Buffalobur (Solanum rostratum Dunal) is an invasive weed in China, and identifying its pathogens is crucial for developing effective biological control measures. In this study, leaf samples from S. rostratum showing typical disease symptoms were collected in Liaoning and Jilin provinces, China. The isolated fungal pathogens were identified based on their morphological characteristics and by using molecular biology techniques. Pathogenicity was assessed by artificially inoculating spore suspensions from the fungal pathogen onto the seeds, isolated leaves, and plants of S. rostratum. The safety of the fungal pathogens for eight other plant species was also evaluated. We then identified the following five fungal pathogens causing disease in S. rostratum in Liaoning and Jilin provinces: Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum sorghinum, Fusarium equiseti, Curvularia hawaiiensis, and Nigrospora oryzae. These fungal pathogens exhibited pathogenicity, with N. oryzae exhibiting the strongest pathogenicity and highest safety. Nigrospora oryzae demonstrated the highest inhibition rate against the radicle germination length of S. rostratum and showed robust pathogenicity toward both isolated leaves and plants. Notably, despite inducing mild reactions in corn (Zea mays L.), grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], rice (Oryza sativa L)., and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), N. oryzae did not have any detrimental effect on the growth of these plants.

Cichorium glandulosum Boiss. et Huet is a species that has recently spread widely in the autumn crops of northwestern Iran. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental factors on the germination, emergence, and management of two populations of C. glandulosum. The effects of temperature, photoperiod, NaCl concentration, osmotic potential, seed burial depth, and straw mulch on seed germination and seedling emergence were evaluated for two populations of C. glandulosum from Tabriz and Marand, Iran. The highest germination percentage was observed in the Tabriz (93%) and Marand populations (94%) at 20/10 C (day/night). In both populations, germination was 82% to 93% across a wide range of light/dark periods (8 to 24 h of light). However, germination was significantly reduced (∼70%) under continuous darkness. The osmotic potential required to inhibit 50% of germination was 0.68 MPa for the Tabriz population and 0.62 MPa for the Marand population. The concentration of NaCl required to inhibit 50% of germination was 4.76 dS m−1 for the Tabriz population and 3.81 dS m−1 for the Marand population. The seed burial depths that caused a 50% decrease in emergence for the Tabriz and Marand populations were 1.86 cm and 2.22 cm, respectively. In the Tabriz and Marand populations, the application of 6000 kg ha−1 of straw mulch resulted in a decrease in C. glandulosum emergence to 3% and 10%, respectively. This study’s results inform the conditions required for C. glandulosum germination and establish a theoretical and practical foundation for predicting, preventing, and managing this species using scientific principles.

Isoproturon phytotoxicity to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a worry for many farmers in chemical control of weeds in wheat fields, especially in subzero weather conditions. Iron chlorin e6 (ICe6), a new plant growth regulator, has been reported to enhance crop stress resistance to alleviate damage caused by stress; however, it is not clear whether ICe6 has an alleviative effect on isoproturon phytotoxicity to wheat. We determined the alleviative effect of ICe6 on isoproturon phytotoxicity to wheat, and 0.018 g ai ha−1 was the optimal dose. Meanwhile, we also studied the photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic parameters, oxidative stress indicators, and antioxidant enzyme activity of wheat treated with the three different treatments. We found that the photosynthetic pigment content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthesis of wheat damaged by isoproturon were significantly lower than those of the control, and the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased. These results indicate that isoproturon stress significantly weakened the photosynthetic and antioxidant capacity of wheat. The photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic parameters (excluding intercellular CO2 concentration), and antioxidant enzyme activity of isoproturon+ICe6– treated wheat were significantly higher than those of isoproturon-treated wheat. The H2O2 and MDA content was significantly lower than that of isoproturon-treated wheat. These results indicate that ICe6 treatment maintained the photosynthetic pigment content of wheat and relatively improved photosynthetic capacity, allowing photosynthesis to proceed normally. ICe6 treatment also limits the decrease in antioxidant enzyme activity, effectively clearing excess reactive oxygen species and ultimately alleviating membrane lipid peroxidation damage. In summary, ICe6 not only enhances stress resistance and increases yield in crops such as soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and canola (Brassica napus L.), but also has an alleviating effect on the isoproturon phytotoxicity to wheat, which is manifested by the improvement of photosynthetic and antioxidant abilities, ultimately leading to an increase in wheat shoot height and shoot fresh weight.

Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] is a staple crop that provides nutritional benefits to humans globally, but it is subject to yield loss when competing with weeds, especially during the early stage of establishment. Yield loss can vary widely based on the cultivar, production environment, weed species, and management techniques. To address this challenge, we conducted field research at the Samuel G. Meigs Horticulture Research Farm, Lafayette, IN, and at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes, IN, in 2022 to determine the effect of sweetpotato cultivar on the critical weed-free period. The experiment was a split-plot design, with weed-free interval treatments as the main plot factor and cultivar as the subplot factor. The three cultivars used were ‘Covington’, ‘Monaco’, and ‘Murasaki’. Weeds were removed by hand and allowed to establish and compete with the crop beginning at 0, 14, 21, 28, 35, or 42 d after transplanting (DAP). As the weed-free interval increased from 0 to 42 DAP, predicted total yield increased from 19 kg ha−1 to 20,540 kg ha−1 for Covington, 3 kg ha−1 to 11,407 kg ha−1 for Monaco, and 125 kg ha−1 to 13,460 kg ha−1 for Murasaki at the Lafayette location. At Vincennes, as the weed-free interval increased from 0 to 42 DAP, predicted total yield increased from 14,664 kg ha−1 to 33,905 kg ha−1 for Covington, 4,817 kg ha−1 to 18,059 kg ha−1 for Monaco, and 12,735 kg ha−1 to 21,105 kg ha−1 for Murasaki. A threshold of ≤10% total yield reduction was achieved by maintaining sweetpotatoes weed-free 24 DAP for Covington, 20 DAP for Murasaki, and 33 DAP for Monaco.

Mexican devil [Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.) R.M. King & H. Rob.], a globally invasive weed with destructive effects on forests, has spread to numerous countries. To elucidate the inhibition of tree growth by A. adenophora, a study was conducted using the fungi (Lactarius deliciosus, Ceriporia lacerata, and Fomitopsis palustris) involved in the recycling of carbon and nutrients in forests. The focus was on investigating soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability in response to aqueous extracts from uncomposted and aerobically composted A. adenophora (EUA and ECA, respectively). The samples of composted A. adenophora from different sites exhibited a significant reduction in the concentration of allelochemicals 4,7-dimethyl-1-(propan-2-ylidene)-1,4,4a,8a-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6(1H, 7H)-dione and 6-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-3,8-dimethyl-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalen-2(1H)-one. This reduction more than 94% when compared with the concentration of these allelochemicals in CA. The EUA solutions at 5 and 10 mg L−1 (oven-dried plant biomass base) minimized L. deliciosus and C. lacerata growth, and significantly decreased F. palustris growth on the soil surface and within the soil. However, soil with ECA had no effect or promoting effect on the fungal growth. Compared with CK (only fungal inoculation in tested soil), the EUA solution reduced soil nitrogen and phosphorus, while ECA had the opposite effect; soil pH was increased by 0.01 to 0.08 under EUA treatment, while it decreased by 0.5 to 0.41under ECA treatment. Nitrogen and phosphorus availability were positively correlated with protease and phosphatase activity (r = 0.723 to 0.944), while available phosphorus was inversely correlated with pH in tested soils (r = -(0.809 to 0.978)). As such, the EUA solution decreased soil nitrogen and phosphorus supplies by inhibiting the liberation of proteases, phosphatases, and protons, which may lead to poor growth or even mortality of three fungal species. The in situ aerobically composted A. adenophora residues left behind may directly supply fungal species with nutrients and indirectly increase soil nutrient availability via the promotion of nitrogen and phosphorus mobilization.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson), a dioecious wind-pollinated plant, is one of the most troublesome crop weeds in the United States and is spreading northward. The prodigious production of seed contributes to establishment of populations and spread across the landscape. Sexual reproduction via outcrossing is likely the primary mode of seed production for this dioecious plant. However, A. palmeri may also be capable of autonomous asexual seed production (apomixis), which could be beneficial during colonization. We conducted two studies of female isolation from pollen to investigate the propensity for autonomous seed production in 19 populations across eastern North America. In the first, we observed low-frequency seed production on many isolated females. Using flow cytometry of seed samples (FCSS) we primarily found patterns of ploidy consistent with sexual reproduction; no significant differences in ploidy between seeds produced on isolated females (putative apomicts) and non-isolated females (putatively sexual) were detected. We also investigated patterns of DNA content and found no evidence in 153 samples for polyploidy, which is often observed in apomictic species. The second female isolation trial utilized sex-specific molecular markers to identify and remove males before flowering, and we observed zero seed production. Overall, we did not detect evidence in support of apomixis in these populations of A. palmeri, suggesting that apomixis is unlikely to have played a role in the northward advance of this species in eastern North America. We also investigated whether there is variation between females and males in size and secondary reproductive traits. We found evidence for sexual dimorphism in three of six traits investigated: females are taller at senescence and produce longer secondary branches and more axillary flowers than males. Differences in cost of reproduction and strategies for pollen release versus pollen capture are likely factors shaping the evolution of sexual dimorphism in this wind-pollinated dioecious plant.

The Amaranthus genus contains numerous agronomic weedy species that are widely distributed across the United States. The seeds of many Amaranthus species are morphologically indistinguishable. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture declared Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) a prohibited noxious weed seed in 2016. Any Amaranthus spp. seeds that are identified as contaminants during routine seed testing require genetic testing to determine whether A. palmeri is present. This research aimed to validate and optimize the molecular detection of A. palmeri in seed. We refined the DNA extraction from pools of Amaranthus spp. seeds ranging in size from 1 to 100 seeds to improve sample testing throughput. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) using primers developed by Murphy and colleagues correctly identified the presence of A. palmeri genetics in 84 samples containing 0, 1, 2, 25, or 50 A. palmeri seeds in samples containing up to 100 seeds. The method specificity was examined using 17 Amaranthus species and 4 hybrids of unknown genetics. The Murphy regular qPCR cycle amplified Watson’s amaranth (Amaranthus watsonii Standl.), spleen amaranth (Amaranthus dubius Mart. ex Thell.), and spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus L.), which would result in false-positive calls; however, the fast cycle only identified A. watsonii as a potential false positive. Examination of the Murphy primer binding site revealed an identical sequence for A. palmeri and A. watsonii. Additional markers were evaluated and optimized for use in qPCR to eliminate the risk of a false positive. The additional markers did eliminate the amplification of A. dubius and A. spinosus but did not eliminate the amplification for A. watsonii. Currently, A. watsonii is not known to be distributed outside of its limited native range and is not expected to be encountered in samples.

Automatic detection and removal of weeds is a challenging task that requires precise sensors. While crops and weeds possess similar features in terms of appearance, they can be discriminated based on spectral information. This can be done because any object has its own specific spectral signature based on its physical structure and chemical contents. This study examined the use of wavelet transform and deep learning for discrimination of weeds from crops. A total of 626 spectral reflectances in the range of 380 to 1,000 nm were obtained for three crops (cucumber [Cucumis sativus L.], tomato [Solanum lycopersicum L.], and bell pepper [Capsicum annuum L.]) and five different weeds (bindweed [Convolvulus spp.], purple nutsedge [Cyperus rotundus L.], narrowleaf plantain [Plantago lanceolata L.], common cinquefoil [Potentilla simplex Michx.], and garden sorrel [Rumex acetosa L.]). Morse wavelet was employed to decompose the spectra and extract the scalograms, which are the RGB representations of the spectral data. Two deep convolutional neural networks (i.e., GoogLeNet and SqueezNet) were employed for the recognition of crops and weeds. In addition, six common classifiers, including linear discriminant analysis, quadratic discriminant analysis, linear support vector machine, quadratic support vector machine, artificial neural networks, and k-nearest neighbors classifier (KNN), were used for the task of crop/weed discrimination to build the comparison with the proposed method. The error of prediction gradually decreased, and a 100% correct classification was achieved after 258 iterations. Analysis showed that SqueezNet provided classification of 100% accuracy, while GoogLeNet’s accuracy was 97.8% for the test set. Among the common classifiers, KNN provided the highest accuracy (i.e., 100%). This study showed that the proposed method can be successfully utilized for classification of crops and weeds.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) is a major biotic constraint in agronomic cropping systems in the United States. While crop–weed competition models offer a beneficial tool for understanding and predicting crop yield losses, within these models, certain weed biological characteristics and their responses to the environment are unknown. This limits understanding of weed growth in competition with crops under different irrigation methods and how competition for soil moisture affects crop growth parameters. This research measured the effect of center-pivot irrigation (CPI) and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) on the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) of A. palmeri grown in maize (Zea mays L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], and fallow subplots. Twelve A. palmeri plants were alternately transplanted 1 m apart in the middle two rows of maize, soybean, and fallow subplots under CPI and SDI in 2019 and 2020 in south-central Nebraska. Maize, soybean, and fallow subplots without A. palmeri were included for comparison. Soil-moisture sensors were installed at 0-0.30, 0.30-0.60, and 0.60-0.90-m soil depths next to or between three A. palmeri and crop plants in each subplot. Soil-moisture data were recorded hourly from the time of A. palmeri transplanting to crop harvest. The results indicate differences in A. palmeri ETa between time of season (early, mid-, and late season) and crop type across 2019 and 2020. Although irrigation type did not affect subplot data, the presence of A. palmeri had an impact on subplot ETa across both years, which can be attributed to the variable relationship between volumetric soil water content (VWC) and ETa throughout the growing season due to advancing phenological stages and management practices. This study provides important and first-established baseline data and information about A. palmeri evapotranspiration and its relation to morphological features for future use in mechanistic crop–weed competition models.

The hybrid Bohemian knotweed [Polygonum ×bohemicum (J. Chrtek & Chrtková) Zika & Jacobson [cuspidatum × sachalinense]; syn.: Reynoutria ×bohemica Chrtek & Chrtková] is part of the worldwide problematic rhizomatous invasive plants that impact (semi-)natural and agricultural systems. In this context, precise knowledge about the morpho-anatomy and resprouting capacity of the underground organs is key information for developing efficient eradication measures. In the present study, we aimed at (1) clarifying existing differences in the morpho-anatomical characteristics of rhizomes and roots, (2) developing an easy-to-apply field identification method for the underground organs, and (3) identifying the main morpho-anatomical features enhancing the rhizomes’ resprouting ability. For this purpose, we collected the underground organs of two wild populations of P. ×bohemicum in Canton Ticino (southern Switzerland) and analyzed the morpho-anatomical differences between rhizomes and roots, using high-resolution microscope images and microtome sections. Collected material was then used for a resprouting capacity test after assessing rhizome characteristics such as weight, total diameter, pith diameter, pith brightness, and pith color. In contrast to roots, rhizomes are characterized by pith tissue in the center and display nodes with peripheral dormant buds that enable them to resprout. Resprouting ability of rhizomes was high (87.1% on average) and depended on the ontogenetic developmental stage of the organs (peak values of 97% for young and clearer-colored organs, 50% for old and dark ones). In conclusion, the smooth pith tissue of rhizomes represents a key discriminating feature between rhizomes and roots, whereas relating existing nodes to the corresponding rhizome pith color allows assessment of the resprouting potential of a knotweed population.

Johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] is one of the most problematic perennial grass weed species in row-crop production across the southern United States. Control of this species is especially challenging in organic systems due to a lack of effective options. A field experiment was conducted at the Texas A&M research farm near College Station, TX, from fall 2019 to spring 2021 to evaluate various nonchemical options for managing S. halepense in the fallow season, implemented over 2 yr in the same locations. The treatments included disking once, disking twice, disking + immediate flooding, disking + flush irrigation + flooding, disking twice + flooding after the first frost, periodic mowing, acetic acid treatment, and disking + tarping. Disking + immediate flooding, disking + flush irrigation + flooding, and disking + tarping were the most effective treatments. Compared with the nontreated control plots, these treatments reduced S. halepense aboveground density (<9 plants m−2 vs. 64 plants m−2), aboveground biomass (<80 g m−2 vs. 935 g m−2), rhizome biomass (<4 g m−2 vs. 55 g m−2), rhizome node number (<25 nodes m−2 vs. 316 nodes m−2), and rhizome length (<42 cm m−2 vs. 660 cm m−2). Disking twice + flooding after the first frost did not show a consistent impact. Periodic mowing also reduced S. halepense density (12 plants m−2 vs. 64 plants m−2) and other variables compared with the control plots at the end of the study in spring 2021. Disking alone once or twice each growing season or repeated application of acetic acid failed to control S. halepense. These results indicate that well-timed nonchemical management practices such as tarping and flooding implemented during the winter fallow can be very effective in reducing S. halepense densities.

A field study was conducted from 2020 to 2023 at Kansas State University Agricultural Research Center near Hays, KS, to understand the emergence dynamics and periodicity of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) as influenced by cover crop (CC) residue and residual herbicide in grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. The study site was under a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–sorghum–fallow rotation with a natural seedbank of GR A. palmeri. Treatments included (1) fall-planted CC mixture [winter triticale (×Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus [Secale × Triticum])/winter peas (Pisum sativum L.)/rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)/radish (Raphanus sativus L.)] after wheat harvest and terminated at triticale heading stage (next spring before sorghum planting) with glyphosate alone or (2) glyphosate plus acetochlor/atrazine, (3) chemical fallow (no CC but treated with acetochlor/atrazine and dicamba before sorghum planting), and (4) nontreated control (no CC and no herbicide). Results indicated that CC terminated with glyphosate plus acetochlor/atrazine had a delayed and reduced cumulative emergence of GR A. palmeri as compared with chemical fallow and CC terminated with glyphosate alone across all 3 yr. Compared with chemical fallow, the CC terminated with glyphosate alone and glyphosate plus acetochlor/atrazine required 66 to 643 and 105 to 1,257 more cumulative growing degree days, respectively, to achieve 90% cumulative emergence of GR A. palmeri across all 3 yr. The combined effect of CC residue with glyphosate plus acetochlor/atrazine reduced the total emergence counts of GR A. palmeri by 42% to 56% and 82% to 94% as compared with chemical fallow and nontreated control, respectively. These results suggest that fall-planted CC combined with a residual herbicide at termination can be utilized for GR A. palmeri suppression in grain sorghum.

Silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav.), a noxious, highly invasive perennial weed, poses a significant threat to irrigated summer crops, vegetables, and orchards. This weed has the ability to reproduce both sexually through seed production and asexually via an extensive underground rhizome network, the latter playing a major role in the weed’s invasion, establishment, and persistence. Our aims were thus to assess the impact of temperature on rhizome sprouting for fragments of different lengths and to model the sprouting dynamics. The influence of temperature on the sprouting of rhizome fragments (2.5-, 5-, 7.5-, or 10-cm long) was investigated in growth chambers at eight temperatures ranging from 10 to 45 C. The highest sprouting proportions for 10-cm rhizome fragments were recorded at 30 and 35 C in complete darkness. The highest sprouting time for all fragment lengths was observed at 15 C in complete darkness. Modeling sprouting rates as a function of temperature gave the cardinal temperatures for the four different rhizome fragment lengths, with Tb (base temperature) values of 12.80, 9.34, 9.14, and 9.50 C, To (optimal temperature) values of 38.9$$0$$, 36.60, 35.16, and 34.86 C, and Tc (ceiling temperature) values of 39.80, 40.08, 40.50, and 40.80 C for rhizome lengths of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 cm, respectively. Based on these findings, the potential for S. elaeagnifolium to spread to new areas and possible new management strategies are discussed; these offer a novel approach for informed decision making regarding the control of this weed.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) is the most problematic weed of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)-cropping systems in the U.S. Southeast. Heavy reliance on herbicides has selected for resistance to multiple herbicide mechanisms of action. Effective management of this weed may require the integration of cultural practices that limit germination, establishment, and growth. Cover crops have been promoted as a cultural practice that targets these processes. We conducted a 2-yr study in Georgia, USA, to measure the effects of two annual cover crops (cereal rye [Secale cereale L.] and crimson clover [Trifolium incarnatum L.]), a perennial living mulch (‘Durana®’ white clover [Trifolium repens L.]), and a bare ground control on A. palmeri population dynamics. The study was conducted in the absence of herbicides. Growth stages were integrated into a basic demographic model to evaluate differences in population trajectories. Cereal rye and living mulch treatments suppressed weed seedling recruitment (seedlings seed−1) 19.2 and 13 times and 12 and 25 times more than the bare ground control, respectively. Low recruitment was correlated positively with low light transmission (photosynthetic active radiation: above canopy photosynthetically active radiation [PAR]/below cover crop PAR) at the soil surface. Low recruitment rates were also negatively correlated with high survival rates. Greater survival rates and reduced adult plant densities resulted in greater biomass (g plant−1) and fecundity (seeds plant−1) in cereal rye and living mulch treatments in both years. The annual rate of population change (seeds seed−1) was equivalent across all treatments in the first year but was greater in the living mulch treatment in the second year. Our results highlight the potential of annual cover crops and living mulches for suppressing A. palmeri seedling recruitment and would be valuable tools as part of an integrated weed management strategy.

Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) as a cover crop can be an effective nonchemical tool for waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer] suppression in crop production. Previous studies have evaluated A. tuberculatus suppression by cereal rye as part of weed management programs but have not investigated the underlying mechanism of suppression by the cover crop. This study aimed to investigate the effect of cereal rye biomass on A. tuberculatus emergence and development, and on soil environmental parameters (temperature, moisture, and light transmittance) that are key triggers of A. tuberculatus germination to elucidate the mechanism of suppression by the cover crop. A dose–response study was conducted under field conditions in Brooklyn and Janesville, WI, from 2021 to 2023. Cereal rye biomass from a fall-planted field was harvested at anthesis in the spring and dried to constant weight at 60 C to provide 0.0, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, 4.8, 7.2, 9.6, and 12.0 Mg ha−1 of dry biomass that was evenly distributed over 1.9 m−2 plots. Increasing cereal rye biomass reduced A. tuberculatus height, biomass, and density. An average ED50 of 5.2 Mg ha−1 of biomass was needed to reduce A. tuberculatus density by 50%. Low levels of biomass (≤2.38 Mg ha−1) augmented A. tuberculatus density due to an increase in soil moisture underneath the mulch compared with bare soil. Cereal rye biomass decreased the amount of sunlight reaching the soil, which resulted in lower mean soil temperature and temperature amplitude throughout the day (9.3 and 2.7 C temperature amplitude at 0 and 12.0 Mg ha−1, respectively). Prevention of A. tuberculatus germination by this thermal effect is likely the main mechanism of A. tuberculatus suppression from the cereal rye cover crop. Our results support biomass from cereal rye cover crop effectively suppressing A. tuberculatus and contributing to the integrated management of A. tuberculatus.

Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum L.) growth in planting holes in commercial strawberry [Fragaria × ananassa (Weston) Duchesne ex Rozier (pro sp.) [chiloensis × virginiana]] fields is a serious problem in Florida. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different G. carolinianum densities on strawberry growth and yield in plasticulture production systems. Geranium carolinianum densities were 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.9, 2.7, and 3.8 plants m−2 equally distributed on the plastic-mulched bed top within the planting holes. Geranium carolinianum density did not affect plant height; however, seed production and season-end biomass were negatively correlated with density in Season I. There was a negative, linear correlation between weed density and berry yields. With each increase in G. carolinianum per square meter, the total annual yield was lowered by 554 and 935 kg ha−1, in Seasons I and II, respectively. Our data clearly indicate that G. carolinianum emerging in the transplant holes of strawberry and competing throughout the season has a significantly negative effect on total berry yield.

Using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image recognition is effective for early weed detection. However, the impact of training data curation, specifically concerning morphological changes during the early growth phases of weeds, on recognition robustness remains unclear. We focused on four weed species (giant ragweed [Ambrosia trifida L.], red morningglory [Ipomoea coccinea L.], pitted morningglory [Ipomoea lacunosa L.], and burcucumber [Sicyos angulatus L.]) with varying cotyledon and true leaf shapes. Creating 16 models in total, we employed four dataset patterns with different growth stage combinations, two image recognition algorithms (object detection: You Look Only Once [YOLO] v5 and image classification: Visual Geometry Group [VGG] 19), and two conditions regarding the number of species treated (four and two species). We evaluated the effects of growth stage training on weed recognition success using two datasets. One evaluation revealed superior results with a single class/species training dataset, achieving >90% average precision for detection and classification accuracy under most conditions. The other dataset revealed that merging different growth stages with different shapes as a class effectively prevented misrecognition among different species when using YOLOv5. Both results suggest that integrating different shapes in a plant species as a single class is effective for maintaining robust recognition success amid temporal morphological changes during the early growth stage. This finding not only enhances early detection of weed seedlings but also bolsters the robustness of general plant species identification.
