Picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) herbicidal activity on seedlings of guava (Psidium guajava L.), strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine), and dwarf beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Bountiful’) was increased by adding ammonium sulfate to the spray solution. Picloram activity tended to increase with increasing ammonium sulfate concentration up to 10% (w/v), but by the end of each experiment ammonium sulfate concentrations above 0.5% were generally equally effective. The absorption of 14C-picloram by strawberry guava leaves was increased about five-fold by 0.5% and 10% ammonium sulfate. There was about four times more 14C-picloram in the upper stem and attached leaves when ammonium sulfate was added than with picloram alone. Ammonium sulfate at 0.5% increased picloram absorption by four-fold in guava, but there was no increase in the amount of picloram translocated acropetally. Picloram absorption by dwarf beans, measured by difference between the amount of picloram applied and the amount recovered, was increased by 0.5% and 10% ammonium sulfate by a similar magnitude as on guava species.

Application of 10-8 M 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) to the roots of 10-day old barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘Coho’) seedlings grown in nutrient cultures increased the water-soluble protein content when grown at 20 C day, 15 C night with 3 mM nitrate nitrogen. The water-soluble carbohydrate content decreased with increases in water-soluble protein. In a time-course study simazine increased 14C-leucine incorporation into protein prior to increasing nitrate uptake, indicating that simazine may have a direct influence on protein synthesis. The nonherbicidal metabolite of simazine, 2-hydroxy-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (hydroxysimazine), did not affect 14C-leucine incorporation into protein.

Common waterhemp is an obligate outcrosser that has high genetic variability. However, under selection pressure, this weed shows population differentiation for adaptive traits. Intraspecific variation for herbicide resistance has been studied, but no studies have been conducted to determine the existence of variation for other adaptive traits that could influence weed management. The objective of this study was to examine the existence of different seed dormancy regulatory mechanisms in common waterhemp. Seed dormancy regulation, in response to different temperature and moisture regimes, was studied through germination experiments and proteome analysis using two common waterhemp biotypes (Ames and Everly) collected from agricultural fields in Iowa, and one biotype (Ohio) collected from a pristine area in Ohio. Without stratification, germination percentage among the different biotypes was 9, 29 and 88% for Ames, Everly, and Ohio respectively. The germination rate of seeds from Ames was dramatically increased after incubation at either 4 or 25 C under wet conditions, whereas germination of seeds from Everly was only increased at 25 C under wet conditions. The Ohio biotype showed no change in germination response to any of the incubation treatments. Germination studies indicated that the rate of seed dormancy alleviation differed between biotypes. Seed protein profiles obtained from the three biotypes differed in protein abundance, number, and type. A putative small heat-shock protein (sHSP) of 17.6 kDa and isoelectric point (pI) 6.1 increased whereas a putative glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH) of 30.9 kDa and pI 6.4 decreased in abundance in the Ames biotype as seed dormancy was reduced in response to incubation at 4 C and wet conditions. These two proteins did not change in the Everly and Ohio biotypes, suggesting that these proteins changed their abundance in response to seed dormancy alleviation. The results of this study suggest that differences in seed dormancy levels between the biotypes were due to different physiological regulatory mechanisms.

Field experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to characterize the weed seed bank, to determine the influence of moldboard plowing and secondary soil disturbance on the emergence pattern of weeds, and to measure weed seed bank depletion by emergence in a long-term moldboard plow corn cropping system. Viable seeds of common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and each of 10 other species accounted for about 85, about 9, and less than 1%, respectively, of the total weed species in the seed bank. A negative binomial distribution described the spatial distribution of viable seeds of 10 species, but not of common lambsquarters or of redroot pigweed. Decreased density of seeds among species was associated with increased aggregation. Secondary soil disturbance increased the rate and magnitude of common lambs quarters emergence in 1992 but did not influence emergence in 1993. Secondary soil disturbance did not influence the magnitude and rate of emergence of redroot pigweed or velvetleaf. Whereas cumulative growing degree days from April through July were similar between years, the amount of rainfall was about 50% less in 1992 than in 1993. Secondary soil disturbance may have increased common lambsquarters emergence by increasing the availability of soil moisture and improving conditions for seed germination during the dry year. Even though seed bank depletion by seedling emergence was relatively low for all species, secondary soil disturbance in creased seed bank depletion of common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed about 7- and 3-fold, respectively, in 1992. Seasonal variation in the amount of rainfall may have influenced the effect of soil disturbance on emergence and seed bank depletion of common lambsquarters, which is the most abundant species in the weed community.

Metolachlor and metribuzin loss in runoff was determined in three soybean tillage systems with and without a 4 by 2 m tall fescue vegetative filter strip. Soil erosion plots were 4 by 22 m with 3% slope. Regression analysis was used to describe herbicide concentration in runoff, and to determine if vegetative filter strips reduced herbicide concentration. Analysis of covariance indicated no difference in concentration of metolachlor or metribuzin in runoff from the three tillage systems within any vegetative filter strip treatment. Metolachlor loss in 1991 was highest from the no-till monocrop without a vegetative filter strip, and it was 65g ha−1 or approximately 2% of the amount applied. In 1992 and 1993, the no-till doublecrop had a total loss of 120 and 147 g ha−1, respectively, approximately 4% of the amount applied. Similar results were noted with metribuzin, but total loss was as high as 46 g ha−1 or 11 % of the amount applied in 1993 from a no-till doublecrop system without a vegetative filter strip. When a vegetative filter strip was present, losses of metribuzin and metolachlor were reduced over 85% in 1993, and totaled 1.2 and 0.5%, respectively, of the amount applied. The vegetative filter strip reduced herbicide and suspended solids from runoff produced by a conventional-till production system to levels equal to or lower than a no-till doublecrop system.

Atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] at 0.14 kg/ha and metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)one] at 0.56 kg/ha applied under field conditions interacted synergistically to reduce soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Harsoy-63′] growth. In the greenhouse, a number of combinations with atrazine at 0.07 kg/ha or greater and metribuzin at 0.56 kg/ha and greater interacted synergistically to reduce soybean fresh and dry weights 30 days after planting. Over a soil pH range of 4.6, 5.6, and 6.7, atrazine–metribuzin interactions were more apparent as the soil pH values increased. Atrazine at 10-5 and 10-6 M concentration in the sand culture nutrient solution during the early growth of ‘Swift’ soybean seedlings decreased 14C-metribuzin uptake and movement into the 12-day-old soybean shoots during the 12-hr treatment period. However, 10-7 M atrazine increased 14C-metribuzin in the shoot by increasing stomatal aperture and subsequent transpiration. Conditions favoring the synergistic interaction were low atrazine residue levels which increase soybean transpiration, high metribuzin rates, and high soil pH levels.

Whole-plant, negative cross-resistance was studied in Conyza canadensis and Echinochloa crus-galli, important global weeds. Negative cross-resistance can be a most useful preemptive, cost-effective tool for delaying the evolution of resistance, as well as for resistance management, after resistant populations evolve. Seeds of triazine-resistant and -susceptible biotypes were collected in or near orchards that had been continuously treated with atrazine for more than 10 yr. Plants grown from the seeds were treated, in a greenhouse, with herbicides from the following chemical families: triazine, benzothiadiazole, phenyl-pyridazine, arylophenoxy-propionate, cyclohexanedione, phenoxycarboxylic acid, pyridine carboxylic acid, phosphinic acid, glycine phosphate, chloroacetamide, sulfonylurea, and bipyridylium. Eleven of the 18 herbicides tested exerted significant negative cross-resistance against atrazine-resistant weeds, ranging from 0.03 to 0.67 of the concentration required to affect the triazine-sensitive type. No synergism was found between bentazon and fluroxypyr in mixture on Conyza, even though both separately exerted negative cross-resistance. Using a mixture with half the amount of each component lowers the environmental effect of each component while controlling a broader spectrum of other weeds.

Selective control of downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was studied in 1971 and 1972. Herbicidal efficacy and alfalfa tolerance, yield, and percent and total protein were observed. The weed population was composed of almost 100% downy brome in 1971 and 1972. Herbicide treatments were applied early and late winter when both alfalfa and downy brome were dormant. Five herbicides afforded virtually complete downy brome control in 1971: pronamide [3,5-dichloro-N-(1,1-dimethyl-2-propynyl) benzamide] at 0.84 and 1.40 kg/ha, simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] at 1.12 kg/ha, terbacil (3-tert-butyl-5-chloro-6-methyluracil) at 0.84 kg/ha, paraquat (1–1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) at 0.56 kg/ha and cyanazine {2-[[4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-s-triazin-2-yl] amino]-2-methylpropionitrile} at 3.4 kg/ha. All herbicide treatments reduced downy brome yields in 1972. Significantly higher alfalfa yields were closely related with lower downy brome yields. In 1972, alfalfa treated with propham (isopropyl carbanilate), cyanazine, pronamide and terbacil also was higher in second cutting yields than the control. Twelve of the 23 treatments, including all triazine herbicides, increased first harvest alfalfa protein percentage in 1972 although differences were not observed in 1971. Alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)-acetanilide] spring-applied in 1971 at 5.62 kg/ha was the only treatment causing visual alfalfa injury.

The rapid evolution and spread of glyphosate-resistant (GR) kochia in the Northern Great Plains is an increasing threat to GR cropping systems and conservation tillage practices common in this region. GR kochia accessions with 4.6- to 11-fold levels of resistance to glyphosate have recently been reported in Montana. Those GR kochia accessions were also suspected to be resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors, i.e., multiple herbicide-resistant (MHR) kochia. In this research, the level of resistance to the ALS-inhibitor herbicides (sulfonylureas) and the molecular mechanisms conferring resistance to glyphosate and ALS-inhibitor herbicides in MHR kochia was investigated. On the basis of whole-plant dose–response assays, MHR kochia accessions (GIL01, JOP01, and CHES01) were 9.3- to 30-fold more resistant to premixed thifensulfuron methyl + tribenuron methyl + metsulfuron methyl than the susceptible (SUS) accession. In an in vivo leaf-disk shikimate assay, MHR plants accumulated less shikimate than the SUS plants at a discriminate dose of 100 μM glyphosate. Sequencing of the conserved region of EPSPS revealed no target-site mutation at Thr102 or Pro106 residue. MHR kochia accessions had increased relative EPSPS gene copies (~ 4 to 10) compared with the SUS accession (single copy). Furthermore, MHR kochia accumulated higher EPSPS protein compared with the SUS plants. Resistance to the ALS-inhibitor herbicides was conferred by Pro197 amino acid substitution (proline to glutamine). EPSPS gene amplification and a single target-site mutation at Pro197 in ALS gene confer resistance to glyphosate and ALS-inhibitor herbicides, respectively, in MHR kochia accessions from Montana. This is the first confirmation of occurrence of MHR kochia in Montana.

In nutrient solution, 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid (2,3,6-TBA) was less toxic to oats than either 2-methoxy-3,6-dichlorobenzoic acid (dicamba) or 3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid (amiben). The latter two herbicides were similar in phytotoxicity.

In soil, dicamba was the most phytotoxic in each of four soils used, while 2,3,6-TBA and amiben were similar in toxicity in all soils except the organic soil, in which amiben was less phytotoxic than 2,3,6-TBA. In the sandy soils the same amount of herbicide was required to reduce the growth of oats by 50% as was required in nutrient solution, but considerably higher amounts were required in the organic soil. This reduction in phytotoxicity was attributed to adsorption of the herbicides in an unavailable form by the organic matter of the soils, amiben being adsorbed to a greater extent than 2,3,6-TBA or dicamba. Practically no adsorption occurred on the clay colloids of the various soils.

In persistence studies, amiben was more subject to apparent microbial decomposition than 2,3,6-TBA or dicamba. Decomposition was more rapid in the organic soil than in the clay or sandy soils. In leaching studies, the three herbicides were readily washed out of columns of the various soils. Differences in movement of herbicide in these soils could be related to the rate of water movement through the soil.

When grown without soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] interference, eastern black nightshade (Solanum ptycanthum Dun.) planted in May produced as many as 7000 berries and 800000 seeds per plant. Eastern black nightshade planted in mid-July produced as many as 100 berries, but those planted in mid-August failed to produce berries. Eastern black nightshade produced less than 85 berries per plant when planted with soybeans in May, 0 to 3 berries per plant when planted into soybeans in June, and no berries when planted into soybeans in July. However, when soybeans were defoliated in July to simulate hail injury, eastern black nightshade that had been planted with soybeans in May produced up to 1600 berries per plant, and those planted into the defoliated soybeans in July produced up to 58 berries per plant. We suggest, therefore, that in vigorously growing soybeans, control of eastern black nightshade emerging in the row would only be required through June to prevent berry production. If, however, the soybean canopy were disturbed by hail or other factors, eastern black nightshade seedlings emerging in late July or early August might produce berries by soybean harvest.

Studies were conducted in Florida to evaluate interference of common cocklebur with peanut. Peanut yield reduction ranged from 0 to 88% for common cocklebur densities of 0–32 plants 8 m−1 of peanut row, and predicted loss was similar under normal moisture conditions. When moisture levels were above normal, the impact on yield was 9–24% less than when soil moisture was normal. Common cocklebur caused peanut yield loss if allowed to interfere for more than the first 2 wk after crop emergence, and peanut had to be common cocklebur free for at least 12 wk to prevent a yield reduction. These results show common cocklebur to be more competitive with peanut than other weeds evaluated previously.

Field experiments were conducted during 1985 and 1986 to determine the response of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Coker 156’], pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L. # IPOLA), and ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq. # IPOHE] to acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}, fomesafen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl) phenoxy]-N-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzamide}, and lactofen {(±)-2-ethoxy-1-methyl-2-oxoethyl-5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-dinitrobenzoate}. Acifluorfen and lactofen were more phytotoxic to soybean 15 days after treatment (DAT) than fomesafen. All herbicides at low rates controlled 80% or more pitted morningglory. However, only the high rates (0.6 kg ai/ha) of acifluorfen and fomesafen controlled 80% or more ivyleaf morningglory 90 DAT. Full-season competition from untreated pitted morningglory reduced soybean seed yields 44 and 22% in 1985 and 1986, respectively, compared to 58 and 49% with untreated ivyleaf morningglory. Soybean seed yields were higher in plots receiving acifluorfen or fomesafen applications than lactofen applications.

Rapid absorption and limited acropetal movement of 14C from p-nitrophenyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2-nitro-p-tolyl ether (hereafter referred to as fluorodifen) labeled with 14C at either the 1 position of the p-nitrophenyl ring (fluorodifen-1′-14C) or the trifluoromethyl carbon (fluorodifen-14CF3) were observed in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L., var. Starr) seedlings after root treatment for 48 hr followed by 96 hr in nutrient solution. Major products of degradation of fluorodifen-1′-14C were p-nitrophenol and Unknown I (possibly a conjugate of p-nitrophenol). Some p-nitrophenyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2-amino-p-tolyl ether and several minor unknowns were detected. The major product of degradation of fluorodifen-14CF3 was Unknown II (possibly a conjugate of 2-amino-4-trifluoromethylphenol). Some 2-amino-4-trifluoromethylphenol and traces of p-nitrophenyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2-amino-p-tolyl ether, p-aminophenyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2-nitro-p-tolyl ether, p-aminophenyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2-amino-p-tolyl ether, and several minor unknowns also were detected. A major pathway of fluorodifen degradation in peanut seedlings is postulated whereby fluorodifen is reduced to the 2-amino derivative which is cleaved at the ether linkage to yield p-nitrophenol and 2-amino-4-trifluoromethylphenol. The respective phenols are then conjugated with natural plant substances to form water soluble conjugates.

In a 4-yr field study, “weed suppressive” rice cultivars provided 30% greater control of barnyardgrass and sustained 44% less yield loss (relative to weed-free) compared to “nonsuppressive” tropical japonica rice cultivars. 13C analysis revealed that rice root mass predominated vertically and laterally within the soil profile of plots infested with barnyardgrass. Among all cultivars, rice roots accounted for 75 to 90% of the total root mass in samples, and this was most concentrated in the surface 5 cm of soil in the row. Barnyardgrass roots were most prevalent in the surface 5 cm between rows where they accounted for 30% of total root mass. Overall, barnyardgrass root mass was about twice as high in nonsuppressive rice compared to suppressive rice. Weed suppression by indica/tropical japonica rice crosses generally was intermediate between that of the other two rice groups. At the 0- to 5-cm depth, between-rows, barnyardgrass root mass was correlated negatively with rice height (r = −0.424), yield (r = −0.306), and weed control ratings (r = −0.524) in weedy plots. Control ratings in weedy plots also were negatively correlated with rice percent height reduction (r = −0.415) and % yield loss (r = −0.747) relative to weed-free plots, and with barnyardgrass root mass as a percent of total root mass (r = −0.612). Control ratings were positively correlated with rice yield under weed pressure (r = 0.429) but were correlated with rice root mass in-rows only (r = −0.322). Clearly, rice root mass could not have been the major cause of the differences in barnyardgrass control between cultivars.

Field experiments were carried out at the Facultad de Agronomía, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina (34°25′S, 58°25′W), to evaluate the possibility of reducing weed seedling emergence through the use of alfalfa cultivars with low levels of winter dormancy and by increasing plant density from 200 to 400 plants m−2. It was hypothesized that these treatments would alter the temperature regime and the red (R)–far-red (FR) ratio of radiation to which seeds were exposed. Responses to management treatments were recorded for bull thistle, cotton thistle, plumeless thistle, tall rocket, mustard, curly dock, and pigweed. During the alfalfa establishment year, pigweed and curly dock emergence was reduced by the nondormant cultivar established at high density. This reduction disappeared when soil beneath the canopy was fitted with heaters that mimicked bare-soil temperatures. Crop canopy presence during the establishment year was not effective in reducing mustard, cotton thistle, bull thistle, plumeless thistle, and tall rocket emergence. During the second and third years after crop establishment, the canopy of the nondormant alfalfa cultivar was effective in reducing germination of weed seeds placed on the soil surface during fall and winter. In contrast, the winter-dormant cultivar allowed the establishment of weeds during the winter period. These reductions in weed emergence were associated with a modification in the R–FR ratio perceived by the seeds located at the soil surface and could largely be removed by using FR filters to increase the R–FR ratio. These results suggest that the selection of a nondormant cultivar combined with an increase in plant density could effectively reduce weed populations in alfalfa.

In field studies, HOE 22870 [4-(4′-chlorophenoxy)-phenoxy-α-propionic-isobutylester] and HOE 23408 methyl 2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoate at 0.84 to 3.36 kg/ha were sprayed over the top of soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], corn (Zea mays L.), and giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.). Rates of 0.84 or 1.68 kg/ha of either herbicide controlled corn and giant foxtail. Soybeans tolerated 3.36 kg/ha (the highest rate used) of either herbicide. Both herbicides performed quite similarly, but HOE 22870 was generally more effective on giant foxtail and less effective on corn than was HOE 23408. The optimum time of application, in terms of soybean development, was the first trifoliolate stage. At this stage, corn had four to five leaves and giant foxtail had three to five leaves. HOE 23408 was applied to 32 inbred lines of corn in a greenhouse study. Several inbreds had considerable tolerance. When HOE 23408 at 0.56 kg/ha was applied to these 32 inbreds in a field study, control ranged from 100% for the most susceptible inbred to 22% for the most resistant inbred. At 1.12 kg/ha, control of corn ranged from 100% to 42%.

Natalgrass is an invasive species that has become increasingly problematic in natural areas in Florida and other subtropical and tropical regions around the world. Natalgrass is a prolific seed producer, but little information is available regarding its seed biology and ecology. Research was conducted to determine levels of seed dormancy and to examine the effects of light, temperature, pH, water stress, and depth of burial on natalgrass seed germination. In addition, seed persistence under field conditions was examined both on the soil surface and while buried. Seeds appeared to undergo afterripening. Seed germination was not light dependent and occurred from 15 to 35 C, with optimum germination occurring at 20 to 35 C. Germination occurred at pH levels of 6 and 8 and was affected by water stress; no germination was observed at osmotic potentials less than −0.2 MPa. Seeds emerged from depths of at least 5 cm. Under field conditions, germination was reduced after burial; however, burial lengths of 3 to 15 mo did not result in differences in germination levels. Seedling numbers from seed deposits on the soil surface were greatly reduced after 1 mo, and no seedling emergence was observed after 4 mo.

Two morphological types of tubers of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) were collected over a 2-year period and were sprouted in the laboratory. Tuber dormancy occurred during late summer and early fall. Sprouting was highest during the winter and spring. Mechanical disturbance of the nutsedge stand increased tuber sprouting. Available carbohydrates followed a pattern similar to sprouting; minimum levels were found during late summer. The two types of tubers appeared to be similar in respect to the characteristics studied.

Weed science has contributed much to agriculture, forestry and natural resource management during its history. However, if it is to remain relevant as a scientific discipline, it is long past time for weed scientists to move beyond a dominating focus on herbicide efficacy testing and address the basic science underlying complex issues in vegetation management at many levels of biological organization currently being solved by others, such as invasion ecologists and molecular biologists. Weed science must not be circumscribed by a narrowly-defined set of tools but rather be seen as an integrating discipline. As a means of assessing current and future research interests and funding trends among weed scientists, the Weed Science Society of America conducted an online survey of its members in summer of 2007. There were 304 respondents out of a membership of 1330 at the time of the survey, a response rate of 23%. The largest group of respondents (41%) reported working on research problems primarily focused on herbicide efficacy and maintenance, funded mainly by private industry sources. Another smaller group of respondents (22%) reported focusing on research topics with a complex systems focus (such as invasion biology, ecosystem restoration, ecological weed management, and the genetics, molecular biology, and physiology of weedy traits), funded primarily by public sources. Increased cooperation between these complementary groups of scientists will be an essential step in making weed science increasingly relevant to the complex vegetation management issues of the 21st century.
