Detrimental effects on growth and yield of soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Amsoy 77′] from density and duration of competition by ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomea hederacea (L.) Jacq. ♯3 IPOHE] was evaluated in 1981 and 1982 near West Lafayette, IN. Ivyleaf morningglory was planted at densities of 1 plant per 90, 60, 30, and 15 cm of row in 1981 and 1 plant per 60, 30, 15, and 7.5 cm of row in 1982. Each density of ivyleaf morningglory competed for 22 to 46 days after emergence and the full season in 1981, and for 29 to 60 days after emergence and the full season in 1982. The best indicators of competition effects were leaf area index, plant dry weight, and yield of soybeans. Ivyleaf morningglory was more competitive during the reproductive stage of soybean growth. Photosynthetic irradiance and soil moisture measurements indicated that ivyleaf morningglory does not effectively compete for light or soil moisture. All densities of ivyleaf morningglory could compete with soybeans for 46 and 60 days after emergence in 1981 and 1982, respectively, without reducing soybean yield. Full-season competition from densities of 1 ivyleaf morningglory plant per 15 cm of row significantly reduced soybean yield by 36% in 1981 and 13% in 1982. The magnitude of soybean growth and yield reduction caused by a given density of ivyleaf morningglory was greater when warm, early season temperatures favored rapid weed development.

In the greenhouse, postemergence treatments of 1.12 kg/ha of HOE 22870 [4-(4′-chlorophenoxy)-phenoxy-α-propionic-isobutylester] or HOE 23408 methyl 2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoate were applied to three perennial weeds (two grasses and one sedge) and to 27 species or varieties of annual grasses (crops and weeds). The perennials were resistant to both compounds, but control of the seedling grasses ranged from 0 to 100%, indicating the potential of controlling certain grass weeds in certain grass crops, as well as in broadleaf crops. Generally, the response of a given species was similar for both compounds. However, on some grasses one compound was considerably more effective than the other. Seven species or varieties of foxtail (Setaria spp.) were treated with various rates of either compound. Differential responses were observed, but it appeared that all the foxtail species or varieties studied should probably be controllable with HOE 23408. All but yellow foxtail [Setaria lutescens (Weigel) Hubb.], should probably be controllable with HOE 22870.

In three replacement series experiments, winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host. #3 AEGCY), and downy brome (Bromus tectorum L. # BROTE) were paired in all possible combinations to determine competitive relationships during vegetative growth. Under growth chamber conditions of ample fertility and soil moisture and day/night temperatures of 18/10 C, relative yield totals for the three species were similar, indicating that they compete for the same resources. Both winter wheat and jointed goatgrass had greater plant growth and higher relative crowding coefficients than downy brome, which indicated a hierarchy of relative competitiveness of winter wheat > jointed goatgrass >> downy brome. In other growth chamber studies, winter wheat was slightly more competitive than jointed goatgrass regardless of fertility levels. Winter wheat was the superior competitor at 18/10 C and −33 kPa (soil moisture), whereas jointed goatgrass was superior at 27/10 C and −300 kPa, conditions that are frequently encountered in the Pacific Northwest.

Ethyl N,N-di-n-propylthiolcarbamate (EPTC) has shown promise as a pre-emergence herbicide in both greenhouse and field studies. Antognini reported that EPTC was quite volatile. In volatility studies in this laboratory the loss of unformulated technical EPTC from a free liquid surface was 57 micrograms/sq cm/hr at 30° C. It was difficult to understand how a compound as volatile as EPTC could be an effective pre-emergence herbicide. Preliminary tests, utilizing radioactive EPTC, demonstrated that it was less volatile from soil surfaces than from stainless steel or leaf surfaces, indicating that a soil adsorption phenomenon might be involved. Greenhouse studies showed that at a given concentration of EPTC in the soil the phytotoxicity to oats (Avena sativa L.) was not the same in the various soil types studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between soil adsorption of EPTC and oats injury in several soil types.

Density and spatial interference of barnyardgrass with ‘Lemont’ and ‘Newbonnet’ rice cultivars was investigated in 1987 and 1988. Barnyardgrass reduced grain yield of Lemont, a semidwarf cultivar, more than Newbonnet, a short-statured cultivar. Linear regression indicated that season-long interference of barnyardgrass at 1 to 20 plants m–2 reduced grain yields of Lemont and Newbonnet by 301 and 257 kg ha–1 per barnyardgrass plant, respectively. Grain yields of Lemont and Newbonnet were reduced by barnyardgrass densities to 40 plants m–2 but were not affected further at densities ≥40 plants m–2. Barnyardgrass reduced straw yield of Lemont more than of Newbonnet. Although barnyardgrass culms m–2 and straw yield increased as weed density increased, the weed produced more culms per plant at 2 and 5 m–2 than at 20 to 80 m–2. In a spatial interference experiment, Lemont grain yield reduction averaged 21% when plants were grown within 0 to 25 cm of a barnyardgrass plant group (group = 4 plants per 140 cm2). However, rice yields were not reduced when barnyardgrass plant groups were 25 to 50 or 50 to 100 cm away. Additional treatments included two barnyardgrass groups spaced 20, 40, 80, or 100 cm apart When Lemont grew between barnyardgrass groups spaced 20 or 40 cm apart, grain yields were reduced 40 and 27%, respectively, compared with weed-free rice. However, Lemont yield was not reduced when rice plants grew between weed plant groups spaced 100 cm apart.

Field and growth chamber experiments were conducted to determine the effects of surface soil moisture on the phytotoxicity of alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] to grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ‘Funk 623 GBR’], which was unprotected or protected with CGA-43089 {α-[(cyanomethoxy)imino] benzeneacetonitrile}. In field tests, neither alachlor nor metolachlor was phytotoxic to unprotected grain sorghum when the surface soil remained dry until the sorghum had emerged. CGA-43089 protected sorghum emerging from moist soil that had been treated with alachlor or metolachlor at rates of 2.24 or 3.36 kg/ha. Growth chamber tests showed that CGA-43089 was less effective in protecting sorghum from herbicide injury when Ships clay was continuously wet [110% field capacity (FC)] from time of planting to emergence (3 to 5 days) than when soil was wet for only 1 or 2 days prior to emergence. In contrast, if the surface soil remained dry until the coleoptile reached the soil surface, alachlor and metolachlor had little effect on sorghum even when no protectant was present. When sorghum was planted in Arenosa sand containing 5% organic matter, protected sorghum grew as well as the control even under continuous high moisture conditions. Metolachlor incorporated into the root zone at a rate of 20 ppm had no effect on either protected or unprotected sorghum. Alachlor and metolachlor were most phytotoxic when placed in the surface 1.25 cm of moist soil or when incorporated. The coleoptile was the most susceptible plant part. Thus, the key to grain sorghum response to these herbicides was in herbicide placement and availability to the coleoptile. Under conditions normally leading to phytotoxic effects from alachlor or metolachlor, grain sorghum growth was significantly better from seed protected with CGA-43089 than from unprotected seed.

Florida beggarweed [Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.) DC] reduced peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. ‘Florunner′) yields more than sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) when the crop and weeds were allowed to compete for the full season. Regression analyses within years indicated peanut yield reductions of 15.8 to 30.2 kg/ha for each Florida beggarweed per 10 m2 vs. 6.1 to 22.3 kg/ha for each sicklepod per 10 m2. Each kilogram fresh weight per hectare of Florida beggarweed reduced peanut yields 0.15 to 0.74 kg/ha. Reductions in peanut yields ranged from 0.08 to 0.23 kg/ha for each kilogram fresh weight per hectare of sicklepod. Peanut yield reductions correlated more closely with the weights of the weeds than with their populations.

This study was conducted in the laboratory and screenhouse to determine the effects of temperature, light, osmotic stress, salt stress, burial depth, use of crop residues as mulch, depth of flooding, and use of POST herbicides on the emergence, survival, and growth of doveweed. In the light/dark regime, germination was higher at alternating day/night temperatures of 35/25 C (95%) than at 30/20 C (72%), and no germination occurred at 25/15 C. Light strongly influenced germination (95%) and dark completely inhibited germination. No germination occurred at an osmotic potential of −0.8 MPa and a salt concentration of 150 mM and above. The highest germination (91%) was observed from the seeds sown on the soil surface and emergence decreased by 78, 86, and 92% when burial depths were increased to 0.5, 1, and 2 cm, respectively. No seedlings emerged from seeds buried at depths of more than 2 cm. The use of rice residues as mulch significantly reduced the emergence and growth of doveweed seedlings. The amount of residue required to suppress 50% of the maximum biomass was 2.5 t ha−1. Flooding had a more pronounced effect on seedling biomass than seedling emergence. Biomass was reduced by 78, 92, and 96% when flooding depths increased from 0 to 2, 4, and 6 cm, respectively, for the seeds placed on the soil surface, whereas for the seeds buried at 0.5 cm, these values were 78, 100, and 100%. Bentazon (100 g ha−1) and bispyribac-sodium (30 g ha−1) provided 100% control of doveweed when applied at the three-leaf stage. Doveweed control was less than 31% with glyphosate rates up to 2,000 g ha−1. The application of 2,4-D (500 g ha−1) provided 100% control of doveweed even when applied at the seven-leaf stage. The information from this study could help in developing more sustainable and effective integrated weed management strategies for the control of this weed and weeds with similar response in dry-seeded rice systems.

This study examined pollen morphological variation among Amaranthus species and interspecific hybrids. Ten weedy Amaranthus species, a cultivated grain species, and several putative hybrids resulting from interspecific mating between common waterhemp and Palmer amaranth were grown in a greenhouse. Mature pollen was collected, viewed, and photographed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The pollen grains were spherical shaped with polypantoporate, or golf ball-like, aperture arrangement. Differences were observed between the monoecious and dioecious Amaranthus species. Pollen grains of the dioecious species had a greater number of apertures on the visible surface. One exception to these trends was the dioecious species, Palmer amaranth, whose pollen was similar to that of the monoecious species spiny amaranth. However, pollen grain diameters did not differ between the monoecious and dioecious plants. Significant differences also were noted between the pollen from the putative common waterhemp × Palmer amaranth hybrids and the parental-type pollen grains. Pollen of the hybrids was similar in size to the maternal parent but had an aperture number that was intermediate between parents. This indicates that pollen characteristics may be controlled by the female and that hybrids may be more prevalent than originally thought.

Seed germination, one aspect of fitness, of chlorsulfuron-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) kochia biotypes collected in North Dakota and Kansas was compared at 8, 18, and 28 C. Cumulative germination, characterized for each biotype using a Weibull function, was different at 8 and 18 C but not at 28 C. The Kansas R biotype reached 50% and maximum germination 70 and 300 h before Kansas S biotype at 8 C and 12 and 100 h before the S biotype at 18 C, respectively. The North Dakota R biotype reached 50% and maximum germination 12 and 100 h before the North Dakota S biotype at 8 C, respectively, and they were not different at 18 C. The resistance trait affects the cumulative germination process of kochia and may affect resistant-weed management strategies implemented early in the growing season when temperatures are lowest.

No-till systems and crop residue management have changed cropping systems in the Great Plains. Previously, winter wheat-fallow was the prevalent rotation; now producers grow warm-season crops along with winter wheat and fallow. With this diversity of crops, producers have developed an ecological approach to weed management where cultural tactics disrupt weed population growth. Producers using this approach are managing weeds with 50% less cost compared with the winter wheat-fallow rotation. Two key components of the multitactic approach are devising rotations comprised of two cool-season crops followed by two warm-season crops with the use of no-till practices. Fallow, if used, serves in either seasonal category. The cycle-of-four rotation also minimizes severity of plant diseases, thereby increasing crop yield potential. Net returns are increased with crop diversity and no-till compared with winter wheat-fallow and tillage. Reduced cost of weed management is a major factor of improved net returns, as well as increased land productivity.

In 1997, farmers in Ontario, Canada, reported failure of some ALS-inhibiting herbicides to provide adequate control of pigweed species. Growth room experiments were conducted to confirm resistance to ALS inhibitors in populations of Powell amaranth and redroot pigweed. Twenty-two out of 35 collected seed samples were able to grow in the presence of soil-applied imazethapyr or flumetsulam. Dose–response curves were generated for 11 and 9 populations of Powell amaranth and redroot pigweed, respectively, using foliar-applied imazethapyr and thifensulfuron. Resistance to ALS inhibitors was confirmed in nine and five populations of Powell amaranth and redroot pigweed, respectively. Within each species, comparison of the herbicide rate required to reduce plant dry weight 50% (GR50) between the resistant populations and a susceptible population was conducted to obtain resistance factors. For imazethapyr, resistance factors ranged from 4.2 to 3,438 and from 33 to 168 for Powell amaranth and redroot pigweed, respectively. High-level cross-resistance to thifensulfuron was found in two populations of each species, with resistance factors ranging from 270 to 2,416. In both species, populations could be grouped according to their cross-resistance patterns: some populations were resistant to imazethapyr only, whereas others expressed resistance to both imazethapyr and thifensulfuron. The observed patterns of cross-resistance were not correlated with known herbicide exposure history of the fields where these populations originated.

Phytoremediation depends on the ability of plants to tolerate and assimilate contaminants. We have been interested in the use of common ornamental plants to ameliorate the effects of pesticide waste on golf courses and ornamental plant nurseries. This research characterized the interaction between two ornamentals, Acorus gramenius and Pontederia cordata, and the herbicide simazine. Simazine tolerance levels for the ornamentals were determined by exposing plants to 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 mg L−1 in aqueous nutrient media for 7 d. Response endpoints included fresh weight gains for both species after 7 d exposure and 7 d postexposure. Quantum efficiency of P. cordata was also measured using dark-adapted (Fv/Fm) and light-adapted (fluorescence yields) plants. Simazine uptake and distribution within each plant was determined by exposing plants to [14C]-simazine in nutrient media (0.24 mg L−1) for 1, 3, 5, or 7 d. Plant tissues were combusted and analyzed by liquid scintillation counting. Pontederia cordata fresh weight gains were reduced 76 and 70% by 1.0 and 3.0 mg L−1, respectively, after 7 d exposure. Acorus gramenius fresh weight gains were reduced 103, 124, and 144% at 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg L−1 following 7 d exposure, respectively. Photosynthetic efficiency measured on dark-adapted P. cordata (Fv/Fm) was reduced 21, 47, and 71% by 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg L−1, respectively, whereas photosynthetic efficiency measured on light-adapted plants (fluorescence yields) were reduced 9, 25, 59, 87, and 96%, respectively, by 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1, and 3 mg L−1. Simazine activity in solution was reduced 45 and 34% over 7 d with A. gramenius and P. cordata, respectively. By day 7, activity was distributed throughout the plants, but predominantly in the leaves. Uptake of simazine was correlated with water uptake throughout the 7 d. These results suggest that A. gramenius and P. cordata may be good candidates for incorporation in a phytoremediation scheme for simazine.

Knowledge of timing and extent of weed emergence before and immediately after crop seedbed preparation is needed to decrease need for preplant herbicides and increase efficacy of postemergence weed control in crops with either mechanical or chemical methods. Such knowledge is important for weeds that infest most crops over a wide area. For these reasons a mechanistic seedling emergence model based solely on soil temperature was developed for common lambsquarters. The model was validated using four sets of field data collected in 1988, 1990, and 1991 near Morris, MN. Agreement of predicted and observed emergence values across all site-years was 0.95 and the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.98 (P < 0.001). Agreement for individual site-years was 0.96, 1.08, 1.08, and 0.98 and associated R2 values were 0.99, 0.99, 0.99, and 0.98 (P < 0.001 for each site-year), indicating close agreement between predicted and actual emergence values.

ALS inhibitor-resistant biotypes are the fastest growing class of herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds. A Canadian ALS inhibitor-resistant biotype of Russian thistle was first reported in 1989. The molecular basis for ALS-inhibitor resistance is unknown for Canadian populations of this polyploid weed species, and was determined in this study for one Alberta and two Saskatchewan HR Russian thistle populations. HR plants survived spray application of the ALS-inhibitor mixture thifensulfuron : tribenuron in the greenhouse. All three HR Russian thistle populations were heterogeneous and contained both HR and herbicide-susceptible (HS) individuals. The molecular basis for resistance was determined by sequencing the ALS gene and/or conducting a TaqMan genotyping assay for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for the Trp574Leu mutation. Two target-site mutations were observed: Trp574Leu in all three biotypes (554 individuals) and Pro197Gln in one biotype (one individual), suggesting multiple-founding events for Russian thistle HR populations in western Canada. Segregation patterns among F1 and F2 progeny arrays of HR lines sprayed under greenhouse conditions varied; some segregated (i.e., had HR and HS progeny), whereas other lines were exclusively HR. In contrast, no segregation of molecular types, i.e., Trp574, Trp/Leu574 and Leu574, as would be expected with heterozygosity at a single locus Trp/Leu574, was observed. Such lack of segregation is consistent with the polyploid genome structure of Russian thistle and the presence of two copies of the ALS gene. The presence of more than one ALS gene confounded the ability of the molecular techniques to accurately identify “true” heterozygotes in this study.

Photosynthesis and growth responses to irradiance level during growth were compared in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. ‘Century’) and three broadleaf weeds to determine if these responses were associated with differences in shade tolerance among species. In response to reduced irradiance during growth, leaf thickness of all species decreased, while chlorophyll content per unit leaf volume and photosynthetic rate per unit leaf volume, measured at low irradiance, increased. Soybean and common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L. #3 XANST) also exhibited a decrease in soluble proteins on a leaf volume basis under reduced irradiance, and common cocklebur further exhibited a decrease in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPcase) protein per unit leaf volume. Decreased irradiance during growth did not alter the content of RuBPcase or other soluble proteins per unit leaf volume in jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L. # DATST) or velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic. # ABUTH). The superior shade tolerance of common cocklebur compared to the other species was attributed in part to the levels of RuBPcase and other photosynthetic proteins in leaves developed at low irradiance.

White light-grown seedlings of smallseed dodder were (a) provided with unilateral far-red (700 to 800 nm) at photon irradiances ranging from 20 to 110 μmol m−2 s−1 against a background of cool white light (400 to 700 nm) from above at 77 μmol m−2 s−1, or (b) transferred to darkness and provided with unilateral white light at 20 μmol m−2 s−1, unilateral blue light (400 to 500 nm) at 10 μmol m−2 s−1, unilateral red light (600 to 700 nm) at 10 μmol m−2 s−1, unilateral far-red at 50 μmol m−2 s−1, or (c) in experiments utilizing bilateral irradiations, provided with unilateral far-red perpendicular to unilateral white light. Positive phototropic curvature was induced by unilateral white light and by unilateral blue light in otherwise darkness and by unilateral far-red in a background of cool white light. Seedling vines were also phototropic toward unilateral far-red when provided with unilateral white light perpendicular to unilateral far-red. Phototropism to unilateral white light was inhibited in seedlings treated with 200 μM norflurazon and 50 mM potassium iodide. Norflurazon- and potassium iodide-treated seedlings remained phototropic toward unilateral far-red when provided with unilateral white light perpendicular to unilateral far-red. Seedling vines were not phototropic to unilateral red or to unilateral far-red in otherwise darkness, and seedlings in cool white light were neither skototropic (i.e., tropic toward unilateral darkness) nor tropic to or from infra-red (radiation with wavelengths greater than 900 nm). Phototropism toward regions of lowered red:far-red may aid smallseed dodder in chlorophyllous host location and attachment.

Phytotoxicity of α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin), incubated for 10 months in Sharpsburg silty clay loam at 0.8 field capacity, remained a 6.4, 0, and 1.6 ppmw of the original 8 ppmw at 15, 25, and 35 C, respectively. In Anselmo sandy loam after 10-months incubation, trifluralin phytotoxicity remained at 3.0, 3.2, and 0.6 ppmw of the original 4 ppmw at 15, 25, and 35 C, respectively. Breakdown of 14C-trifluralin to 14CO2 in both soils was more rapid at 1.6 field capacity than at 0.8 field capacity, and at 1 ppmw than at 100 ppmw of trifluralin. Breakdown of 14C-trifluralin to 14CO2 accounted for 5 and 3% of the decrease of 14C-activity in Sharpsburg silty clay loam and Anselmo sandy loam, respectively.

Common and Drummond goldenweed are troublesome subshrubs that often invade rangelands in southern Texas. Both species produce a profusion of conspicuous golden-yellow flowers in the fall. Common goldenweed flowers from late September to mid-October, whereas Drummond goldenweed flowers from mid-November to early December. Plant canopy reflectance measurements made on both species showed that they had higher visible (0.63- to 0.69-μm waveband) reflectance than did associated plant species and bare soil during flowering. Flowering common and Drummond goldenweed plants had a yellow image on conventional color (0.40- to 0.70-μm) aerial photographs that made them distinguishable from associated plants and soil. Computer analyses of the conventional color film transparencies showed that common and Drummond goldenweed infestations could be quantified from associated vegetation and soil. Flowering common goldenweed plants could also be detected on conventional color aerial video imagery.

Rhizome differentiation in yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.), cultured under 12½, 14, and 15½-hr photoperiods, 21–16, 27–21, and 33–27 C temperatures (day and night, respectively), Hoagland solutions of 1/32, 1/8, and 1/2 strength nitrogen (N), and 0, 10, and 1000 ppm gibberellin (GA), was investigated in controlled-environment chambers.

High levels of N, long photoperiods, and high levels of GA at the shortest photoperiods inhibited tuberization whereas high temperatures at the lowest N level favored tuberization. Shoot formation was promoted by high levels of N, long photoperiods, and high temperatures under 12½ and 14-hr photoperiods while GA had a retarding effect. The higher levels of N, temperature, and GA decreased carbohydrate level whereas the longer photoperiods increased it.

It may be concluded that tuberization is not only the result of surplus carbohydrates in the plant but is controlled also by some GA-like substances regulated in the plant under specific conditions of photoperiod and temperature.
