Wild oat, a troublesome weed in cereals, infests about 11 million hectares of cropland in the United States. Diversifying cereal production with alternative crops, such as yellow mustard and canola, can provide flexibility in cropping systems, decrease production risks, and allow for effective weed suppression. The objective of the study was to quantify the competitive ability of yellow mustard and canola relative to wild oat in addition series field experiments, which were conducted in 1999 and 2000 near Genesee, ID. Biomass and seed production of wild oat were reduced 67 and 80%, respectively, in mixtures with yellow mustard, which was three to four times greater than the reduction in corresponding mixtures with canola. In addition, yellow mustard reduced the biomass and seed production of wild oat equally regardless of wild oat density. In contrast, the competitive effect of canola on wild oat biomass decreased 5 to 10 times when wild oat density increased from 100 to 200 plants m−2. Yellow mustard at all densities and at both biomass harvests suppressed wild oat biomass and seed production similarly. But suppression of wild oat by canola increased as canola density increased, and canola plants were more competitive at the flowering stage than at the rosette stage. Wild oat had little or no effect on yellow mustard seed yield but reduced canola seed yield 37%, when averaged over canola densities. Additionally, the oil content of canola seed was reduced 0.4% for every 1% of wild oat seed in the harvested seed. Models developed in this study accurately predicted plant populations of yellow mustard and canola that provided optimal weed suppression and crop yield for different wild oat populations.

One and two postemergence (POE) applications of the butyl ester of fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid} or sethoxydim (2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} following preemergence (PRE) application of fluometuron {N,N-dimethyl-N′-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] urea} were compared to a preplant-incorporated (PPI) application of trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] or pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] plus fluometuron PRE or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE for annual grass control in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and net economic return to land, overhead, and management. One POE application of either fluazifop or sethoxydim following fluometuron PRE resulted in greater control of a high population of broadleaf signalgrass [Brachiaria platyphylla (Griseb.) Nash. # BRAPP] and greater yield and net return than a PPI application of trifluralin or pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE. A second application of fluazifop or sethoxydim increased late-season control but did not increase yield or net return. In a high population of large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L. # DIGSA), fluometuron PRE plus two POE applications of fluazifop or sethoxydim resulted in grass control, lint yield, and net return similar to trifluralin or pendimethalin PPI plus fluometuron PRE. No differences in grass control, crop response, or net return were noted between PPI application of trifluralin or pendimethalin. Control of broadleaf signalgrass and large crabgrass with pendimethalin plus fluometuron PRE was less than with pendimethalin PPI plus fluometuron PRE. In fields with a low population of large crabgrass, fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. # PANDI), and goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. # ELEIN], fluometuron PRE provided excellent season-long control. No benefits were obtained from addition of a grass herbicide. No treatments affected cotton maturity or fiber quality.

Large quantities of viscous, non-crystalline epicuticular waxes were observed on leaves of three goldenweed (Isocoma) species. Based on weights of residues from single 15-s chloroform extractions, wax on leaves of field-grown plants of the least herbicide-susceptible species, common goldenweed [I. coronopifolia (Gray) Greene], increased from 71 mg/dm2 in March to 286 mg/dm2 in October, which was two to four times greater than the amount present on other goldenweed species. Similar quantities were produced by leaves of glasshouse-grown plants, but maximum wax production occurred during summer months. The epicuticular wax of fully expanded leaves decreased with age. The amounts of epicuticular wax on individual plants growing within a field population varied by a factor of four.

In symptomatological studies with 3–(p-chlorophenyl)–1,1–dimethylurea (monuron2 or CMU) it was found that light intensity had an effect on the type of symptom and on the extent of the injury produced by this chemical. This note is published to direct attention to the influence of light in the herbicidal action of monuron.

The identities of two novel perennial nutsedge biotypes collected near Bakersfield, CA, were assessed using isozyme and random-amplified polymorphic deoxyribonucleic acid markers in conjunction with morphological analysis. The two biotypes, designated as CK (Cyperus rotundus cv. ‘Kempeni’) and CR (Cyperus esculentus cv. ‘Robusta’), morphologically resemble purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge, respectively. Plants from both biotypes exhibited more prolific growth than the typical forms and possessed some traits that are not characteristic of the species they resemble. The morphological study was conducted on a total of 15 purple nutsedge, yellow nutsedge, CK, and CR populations collected in the first year and on 20 additional nutsedge populations were collected in the second year. The genetic analysis was performed on populations from the first year only. In general, there was agreement among the results obtained from the morphometric, isozymatic, and deoxyribonucleic acid studies. Populations of CR clustered with yellow nutsedge populations, indicating that CR is within the normal range of variation of this species and may represent a new introduction. Populations of CK, however, were distinct from both purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge populations. Considering the low level of genetic variation reported in purple nutsedge and its strict vegetative mode of reproduction, CK might represent a sexually reproducing ecotype of purple nutsedge or a hybrid with yellow nutsedge.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the influence of herbicide rate, hybrid variability, and soil moisture on the effectiveness of CGA-154281 in protecting corn seedlings from metolachlor injury. High rates of metolachlor caused significant injury to seedlings of sensitive corn hybrids. However, with metolachlor plus CGA-154281, very few injury symptoms were observed, even with the 7.8 kg ha–1 rate and the most sensitive hybrid. Corn seedlings were not injured by metolachlor plus CGA-154281 at the highest soil moisture level evaluated, whereas those treated with metolachlor alone showed 70% injury. Metolachlor injury increased as soil moisture content increased. In the greenhouse, CGA-154281 did not protect any of the eight weed species tested against injury by 2.2 kg ha–1 metolachlor. In laboratory studies, CGA-154281 did not alter the absorption of 14C-metolachlor during an 8-h period. Qualitative comparison of the metabolism of metolachlor in the presence or absence of the protectant indicated that metolachlor was metabolized to a more polar metabolite, believed to be a glutathione conjugate. However, CGA-154281 significantly enhanced the rate of metabolism of metolachlor in three of the four hybrids tested. Metolachlor metabolism activity may already have been functioning at a maximum level in the unaffected hybrid.

Japanese foxtail is a grass weed in eastern China. This weed is controlled by fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, one of the most common acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicides. Some Japanese foxtail populations have developed resistance to fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, owing to target-site mutations (amino acid substitutions) located within the carboxyl transferase domain of ACCase. In the present study, three mutations were detected in three fenoxaprop-P-ethyl–resistant Japanese foxtail populations: Ile-1781-Leu in JCJT-2, Ile-2041-Asn in JZJR-1, and Asp-2078-Gly in JCWJ-3. Two copies of ACCase (Acc1-1 and Acc1-2) were identified, but mutations were detected only in Acc1-1. The derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (dCAPS) method detected these mutations successfully in Japanese foxtail. The mutation frequencies in JCJT-2, JZJR-1, and JCWJ-3 were approximately 98%, 92%, and 87%, respectively. Different cross-resistance patterns to ACCase inhibitors were found in the three resistant populations. JCJT-2 (Ile-1781-Leu) and JZJR-1 (Ile-2041-Asn) showed cross-resistance to haloxyfop-R-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, and pinoxaden, but were susceptible to clethodim. JCWJ-3 (Asp-2078-Gly) showed cross-resistance to all tested ACCase-inhibiting herbicides.

The degree and longevity of quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.] control provided by autumn applications of pronamide [3,5-dichloro(N-1,1-dimethyl-2-propynyl)benzamide] was influenced greatly by alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) stand density, as well as by rate of application and soil type. When applications were made to a field with a sparse alfalfa stand (10 to 20 crowns/m2), quackgrass yields were reduced the year following pronamide application, but quackgrass reinfested the plots the second year after treatment. Quackgrass yields one and two seasons following autumn treatment with 2.2 kg/ha pronamide were 1480 and 3890 kg/ha compared to 4480 and 4870 kg/ha for control plots. Annual applications of pronamide were necessary to maintain quackgrass control in the sparse alfalfa stand. Pronamide application to a vigorous, dense alfalfa stand (40 to 50 crowns/m2) provided quackgrass control which persisted into the second year after treatment. Quackgrass control ratings one and two seasons after application of 1.1 kg/ha pronamide were 100 and 90%. Pronamide treatments reduced first cutting quackgrass yields, and increased first cutting alfalfa yields. Treatment of the sparse alfalfa stand with 2.2 kg/ha pronamide resulted in first cutting alfalfa and quackgrass yields of 2420 and 990 kg/ha compared to 1430 and 3940 kg/ha for controls. Treatment of a dense alfalfa stand with 1.1 kg/ha pronamide resulted in first cutting alfalfa and quackgrass yields of 3850 and 300 kg/ha compared to 1710 and 1660 kg/ha for controls. Total herbage yields from all cuttings were either slightly decreased when fields with sparse alfalfa stands were treated or remained constant or slightly increased when more dense alfalfa stands were treated. Pronamide applied with potash as the carrier was as effective as when applied in water. Pronamide treatment resulted in increased crude protein concentration in first cutting herbage at all locations in all years. Crude protein concentration in first cutting control herbage ranged from 13.3 to 16.1%. Crude protein concentration in first cutting herbage from plots treated with 1.1 kg/ha pronamide ranged from 17.7 to 20.6%, depending on year and location. In vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM) concentrations were increased by most rates of pronamide in first, second, and third cutting herbage. IVDDM for first cutting control herbage was 51.4% compared to 61.3% for herbage treated with 2.2 kg/ha pronamide. Acid detergent fiber concentration in first cutting herbage was not affected by pronamide.

Small field plots, 18 by 18 cm in size, were treated with S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl)diisopropylthiolcarbamate (triallate) at rates equivalent to 2.8 kg/ha at five sites in Saskatchewan. After one growing season (5 months) the residues remaining in the 0 to 5 and 5 to 10-cm levels of soil were determined by gas chromatographic analysis. At all locations 16 to 27% of the applied herbicide was found in the top 5 cm while negligible residues were detected at the 5 to 10-cm level.

Weed management decisions based on weed threshold models offer the opportunity to reduce herbicide use by allowing the possibility of forgoing treatment or lowering rates. Weed thresholds based on a relative leaf-cover model were tested during a 4-yr period at two locations. Two 1.62-ha fields, planted to conventional and glyphosate-resistant corn (2004, 2005, 2007) or soybean (2006), were divided in 900 m2 sections. Herbicides were applied postemergence to each of these sections with either variable rates based on weed thresholds, or constant full rates. Variable herbicide rates included: no application, half rate, or full rate. Relative weed cover values of 0.2 and 0.4 (corn) or 0.1 and 0.3 (soybean) served as thresholds for incremental rates. Digital images were used to evaluate the relative weed cover. Weed density was assessed before and after herbicide application. Weed seed production was estimated for two species in 2004 and 2005. No difference in crop yield, relative weed cover, weed density, or weed seed production was observed between conventional and glyphosate-resistant cropping systems. During the first year, herbicide use reduction was obtained (−85.4%) with marginal crop yield loss (5 to 15%). In the subsequent 3 yr, preherbicide weed densities increased and concomitant increases in relative weed cover values did not allow more than a 10% overall reduction in herbicide use. This threshold model designed to maintain crop yields within a given year did not allow significant reduction in herbicide use during the following 3 yr. Residual weed populations most likely replenished the seed bank to levels that allowed weed densities to increase afterward. Increased weed density over time in plots treated with full rates of herbicide every year also indicated that a single postemergence herbicide treatment was not sufficient to contain weed populations at low levels every year in this corn–soybean rotation.

Hawaiian sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum L. hybrids) differed considerably in their tolerance to 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron). There was a greater concentration of diuron in the younger leaves of a sensitive cultivar, ‘H 53–263,’ compared with a tolerant cultivar, ‘H 50–7209′; degradation of diuron was more extensive in ‘H 50–7209′. The metabolites identified after applications of carbonyl-labeled diuron to the root system were 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-methylurea (monomethyl-diuron) and 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea (demethylated diuron). Differences in diuron phytotoxicity to cultivars ‘H 53–263’ and ‘H 50–7209’ are at least partially explained by differences in the distribution and degradation of diuron.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) response was evaluated when quinclorac was applied prior to cotton emergence (preemergence) and to cotton in the cotyledon and pin-head square stages in 1988, 1989, and 1990. Quinclorac applications at 9, 17, 35, 70, and 140 g ha−1 prior to cotton emergence had little effect on cotton growth, with only 140 g ha−1 causing stand reduction or stunting. Quinclorac application to cotton in the cotyledon stage caused more damage, and 70 g ha−1 caused crop injury. Greatest phytotoxicity was observed when quinclorac was applied to cotton at pin-head square, with all rates including 9 g ha−1 causing injury. Cotton injury consisted of leaf strapping and malformation of reproductive structures. Regression analysis revealed yield was reduced by quinclorac applications to cotton in the cotyledon or pin-head square stage. The approximate regression equation to predict cotton yields after pin-head square application of quinclorac was [yield] = [yield with no injury] − 10(quinclorac rate in g ha−1).

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the biodegradation of 14C-labeled butylate, cycloate, EPTC, pebulate, and vernolate in three butylate-history soils that had received three to eight applications of butylate under field conditions. After 20 days, biodegradation of butylate and EPTC was accelerated and had no lag phase in all three butylate-history soils. Butylate-adapted microorganisms were cross-adapted for EPTC and degraded EPTC as readily as butylate. Biodegradation of butylate and EPTC in Dothan soil without a butylate history exhibited a lag phase of 6 days after which 14CO2 was evolved at an exponential rate. This indicated that enhanced biodegradation was induced after one application of butylate or EPTC. Butylate-adapted microorganisms were cross-adapted for vernolate and pebulate in Dothan and pebulate in Wagram soils with a butylate history. Biodegradation of vernolate and pebulate was not enhanced in Varina butylate-history soil. After 20 days, there was no cross-adaptation for cycloate in any soil. These findings indicated that biodegradation of carbamothioates was influenced by soil type and previous carbamothioate use and that caution should be exercised in use of EPTC on fields of previous butylate use.

Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the mode of action of soil- and foliar-applied UCC-C4243. Experiments demonstrated that UCC-C4243 required light for phytotoxicity, phytotoxic symptoms were similar to inhibitors of porphyrin synthesis such as acifluorfen, and UCC-C4243 potently inhibited protoporphyrinogen oxidase. Germination and emergence of field pennycress and lentil in the dark were not affected by soil-incorporated UCC-C4243 at rates more than 10 times greater than like treatments that killed all plants in the light. Soil-incorporated UCC-C4243 required light for activity and killed seedlings within 1 d after emergence; sublethal doses caused desiccation, veinal necrosis, and leaf deformation. Field pennycress and lentil were susceptible to soil-incorporated UCC-C4243 and acifluorfen in the light, but were 5 to 93 times less sensitive to the herbicides in the dark. Wheat was not affected by either herbicide in the light or dark. Injury symptoms from UCC-C4243 applied POST to redroot pigweed were similar to symptoms from diphenyl ether and bipyridinium herbicides: rapid, light-dependent chlorophyll bleaching, desiccation, and necrosis. UCC-C4243, acifluorfen-methyl, and acifluorfen acid caused light- and concentration-dependent chlorophyll bleaching and electrolyte leakage from cucumber leaf disks (I50 = 1.0, 1.8, and 4.3 μM, respectively). An inhibitor of the porphyrin synthesis pathway, 4,6-dioxoheptanoic acid, almost completely inhibited herbicide-induced electrolyte leakage. δ-Aminolevulinic acid, a tetrapyrrole precursor and stimulator of the porphyrin synthesis pathway, caused synergistic effects with each herbicide. Protoporphyrinogen oxidase from barley etioplast preparations was inhibited 50% by 40 nM UCC-C4243. Barley leaf sections treated with 100 μM UCC-C4243 accumulated protoporphyrin IX in vivo to levels > 75 times non-treated controls. These data indicate the light-requiring herbicide activity of UCC-C4243, like acifluorfen, is due to inhibition of protoporphyrinogen oxidase.

Field horsetail was grown from rhizome segments for 28 and 52 d under 35, 60, 120, 170, and 320 μmol m–2 s–1 photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) and four continuous nitrogen (N) supply rates corresponding to a total of 1 to 6 kg N ha–1 28 d after planting (DAP) and 6 to 41 kg N ha–1 52 DAP. There was no response to the supply of N in the first growth period, probably due to the mobilization of nitrogen available in the planted rhizomes, and only dry weight (DW) of new belowground production, mostly roots, responded to increased light. Rhizomes were produced during the latter part of the 52-d period. Requirements for light and N during the 52-d period were low, because total new tissue production was only reduced at the lowest levels of light (35 μmol m–2 s–1 PPF) and the two lowest N supply rates (6 and 18 kg N ha–1). The ratio of shoot DW to belowground organ DW increased only as the N supply increased. Shoot height response to an increased N supply was also small. Field horsetail can therefore be considered tolerant of low levels of N but will be overtopped by fast-growing species when competing for increased supplies of N. Both an increase in N supply and a reduction in light increased the reduction of DW of the planted rhizomes, whereas tuber production was favored by low N supply and high light intensities. Field horsetail can tolerate low levels of N but is not likely to be competitive in a dense crop stand.

The susceptibility of 2- and 4-month-old perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) and highland bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth.) to glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] was studied in the greenhouse. All 2-month-old grasses were killed by 0.28 kg/ha and higher rates of glyphosate. At 0.14 kg/ha, red fescue was moderately resistant, and bluegrass, orchardgrass, and perennial ryegrass were moderately susceptible. Bent-grass was very susceptible. When 4-month-old grasses were treated, bluegrass was as tolerant to 0.28 kg/ha of glyphosate as was red fescue. At this same rate, orchardgrass and perennial ryegrass were moderately susceptible, whereas bentgrass remained the most susceptible. Dosages lower than 0.28 kg/ha had little effect; whereas higher doages injured all five species. 14C-glyphosate was absorbed and translocated via both apoplast and symplast in 1-month-old red fescue, orchardgrass and perennial ryegrass seedlings. Comparatively, less radioactivity was transported to the untreated areas in red fescue than in orchardgrass and perennial ryegrass. Thus, the differential tolerances of these species to low rates of glyphosate may be explained, in part, by differential translocation of glyphosate.

Dormant, dehulled red rice (Oryza sativa L. ‘Louisiana strawhulled′) germinated 80 to 90% at 30 C upon exposure to 10-3 M kinetin (6-furfurylaminopurine), benzyladenine (6-benzylaminopurine), or isopentenyladenine [6-(3-methylbut-2-enylamino)purine] at pH 3.5. Zeatin [6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-trans-2-enylamino)purine] was also active, eliciting 45% germination at 10-3 M. Adenine was inactive at concentrations as high as 10-2 M. There was little influence of light and no effect of initial pH of the medium upon cytokinin-stimulated germination. At 20 C the response to cytokinins was reduced, but germination of non-dormant seeds was not prevented. At 30 C, the germination of dehulled red rice with 10-3 M kinetin occurred rapidly, with almost 70% germination after 2 days. When dehulled seeds were incubated in water and then transferred to kinetin, percent germination decreased as the duration of water incubation increased. The loss of cytokinin response did not parallel the timecourse of imbibition. Cytokinins did not break dormancy of intact seeds. The hull appeared to limit kinetin uptake and inhibited germination even when kinetin was forced into intact seeds by vacuum infiltration. Dry-after-ripening of intact seeds at 30 C did not increase the kinetin-sensitivity of intact red rice.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine if the inheritance of bentazon susceptibility in the corn inbred ‘GA209’ is a recessive single gene trait Bentazon was applied at 4.4 kg ai ha-1 plus 1% by vol crop oil concentrate in all experiments. This treatment caused 96 and 30% visual injury and 86 and 50% dry weight loss for corn inbreds GA209 and ‘Ky226,’ respectively. Corn inbreds ‘B73,’ ‘T61,’ Mo17,’ ‘Pa91,’ and ‘CI66’ showed less than 18% injury and 10% dry weight loss and were considered tolerant of bentazon. Single crosses and reciprocal single crosses of GA209 with the other inbreds were considered bentazon tolerant with approximately 10% stunting and tissue necrosis and 20% dry weight reduction resulting from bentazon. Bentazon susceptibility was not maternally inherited. Apparent single recessive gene control of bentazon susceptibility of GA209 was observed for F2 and backcross segregations. However, subsequent analyses of F3 and selfed-backcross populations indicated that two genes, probably located on the same chromosome, controlled the bentazon susceptibility. Duplicate dominant epistasis provided the best fit for injury and dry weight reduction segregations in populations derived from the cross of inbreds GA209 and B73.

Methionine-methyl-C14 administered to seedling tissue produces radioactive polymers consisting primarily of protein. Formation of polymer was inhibited within half an hour in susceptible species by 1, 10, and 50 ppm concentrations of isopropyl N-phenylcarbamate (IPC), isopropyl N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamate (CIPC), methyl N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)carbamate (swep), and 4-chloro-2-butynyl N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamate (barban). Resistance to inhibition varied with plant species, and was in accord with previously observed responses in field work. Inhibition of amino acid utilization may be a fundamental cause of carbamate phytotoxicity. Formation of material tentatively described as lignin is also inhibited.

A standard method for evaluating weed seed predation is needed to facilitate generalizations across studies. Identification of general trends could allow practical recommendations for enhancing weed seed predation in agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to compare the commonly used sandpaper and soil substrate methods for offering weed seeds when assessing seed predation rates. Invertebrate seed predators and associated weed seed predation levels were measured in June to July, August, and September of 2005 and 2006 within a conventionally managed corn system. Seed predation levels of three common weed species, velvetleaf, giant foxtail, and common lambsquarters, were estimated using feeding trials in which 40 seeds of each species were offered over a 48 h period using the two substrates. Exclosures were used to distinguish total predation from predation by invertebrates alone. In addition, we investigated the use of geospatial analysis to estimate spatial autocorrelation of invertebrate populations and seed removal rates. Results suggest caution in using synthetic substrates, such as sandpaper, when assessing seed predation, especially when investigating small-seeded species (< 1 mg seed−1) or when seed predators are predominantly invertebrates. By contrast, predation of the larger-seeded species, velvetleaf, was less affected by substrate, perhaps because of removal predominately by vertebrates. One way to overcome problems with the sandpaper substrate method is for studies to include some soil substrate samples for on-site calibration of the sandpaper substrate. If necessary, data could then be corrected by multiplying by the ratio of soil substrate measured-predation rate to sandpaper measured-predation rate. Spatial autocorrelation explained between 6 and 9% of the variation in giant foxtail and common lambsquarters removal rates attributed to invertebrates alone. Researchers should, therefore, be careful not to neglect the impact of clustered invertebrate populations and associated seed removal rates.
