In this study, a fuzzy reinforcement learning control (FRLC) is proposed to achieve trajectory tracking of a differential drive mobile robot (DDMR). The proposed FRLC approach designs fuzzy membership functions to fuzzify the relative position and heading between the current position and a prescribed trajectory. Instead of fuzzy inference rules, the relationship between the fuzzy inputs and actuator voltage outputs is built using a reinforcement learning (RL) agent. Herein, the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) methodology consisted of actor and critic neural networks is employed in the RL agent. Simulations are conducted with considering varying slip ratio disturbances, different initial positions, and two different trajectories in the testing environment. In the meantime, a comparison with the classical DDPG model is presented. The results show that the proposed FRLC is capable of successfully tracking different trajectories under varying slip ratio disturbances as well as having performance superiority to the classical DDPG model. Moreover, experimental results validate that the proposed FRLC is also applicable to real mobile robots.

Natural calamities are affecting many parts of the world. Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, earthquakes, wildfires, floods and all unpredicted phenomena. Disasters cause emergency conditions, so imperative to coordinate the prompt delivery of essential services to the sufferers. Often, disasters lead many people to perish by becoming trapped inside, but many more also perish as a result of individuals receiving rescue either too late or not at all. The implementation and design of a Receiver module utilizing Davinci code processor DVM6437, Wireless camera receiver, Zigbee Transceiver and Global Positioning System (GPS) is proposed in this manuscript for Wireless Vision-based Semi-Autonomous rescue robots that are employed in rough terrain. The receiver side’s Zigbee transceiver module eliminates the limitations of tele-operating rescue robots by enabling the control station to receive GPS data signals and aids in robot management by sending control signals wirelessly. Half and full-duplex communication are supported by the Davinci processor DVM6437, a digital media fixed-point DSP processor that relies on Very Long Instruction Words. It includes an extensive instruction set that is ideal for real-time salvage operations. DVM processor is coded utilizing MATLAB Simulink. MATLAB codes and Simulink blocks are employed under Embedded IDE link.

In the field of laparoscopic surgery, research is currently focusing on the development of new robotic systems to assist practitioners in complex operations, improving the precision of their medical gestures. In this context, the performance of these robotic platforms can be conditioned by various factors, such as the robot’s accessibility and dexterity in the task workspace. In this paper, we present a new strategy for improving the kinematic and dynamic performance of a 7-degrees of freedom robot-assisted camera-holder system for laparoscopic surgery. This approach involves the simultaneous optimization of the robot base placement and the laparoscope mounting orientation. To do so, a general robot capability representation approach is implemented in an innovative multiobjective optimization algorithm. The obtained results are first evaluated in simulation and then validated experimentally by comparing the robot’s performances implementing both the existing and the optimized solution. The optimization result led to a 2% improvement in the accessibility index and a 14% enhancement in manipulability. Furthermore, the dynamic performance criteria resulted in a substantial 43% reduction in power consumption.

Physically compliant actuator brings significant benefits to robots in terms of environmental adaptability, human–robot interaction, and energy efficiency as the introduction of the inherent compliance. However, this inherent compliance also limits the force and position control performance of the actuator system due to the induced oscillations and decreased mechanical bandwidth. To solve this problem, we first investigate the dynamic effects of implementing variable physical damping into a compliant actuator. Following this, we propose a structural scheme that integrates a variable damping element in parallel to a conventional series elastic actuator. A damping regulation algorithm is then developed for the parallel spring-damping actuator (PSDA) to tune the dynamic performance of the system while remaining sufficient compliance. Experimental results show that the PSDA offers better stability and dynamic capability in the force and position control by generating appropriate damping levels.

This paper presents a decentralized, cooperative, real-time avoidance control strategy for robotic manipulators. The proposed avoidance control law builds on the concepts of artificial potential field functions and provides tighter bounds on the minimum safe distance when compared to traditional potential-based controllers. Moreover, the proposed avoidance control law is given in analytical, continuous closed form, avoiding the use of optimization techniques and discrete algorithms, and is rigorously proven to guarantee collision avoidance at all times. Examples of planar and 3D manipulators with cylindrical links under the proposed avoidance control are given and compared with the traditional approach of modeling links and obstacles with multiple spheres. The results show that the proposed avoidance control law can achieve, in general, faster convergence, smaller tracking errors, and lower control torques than the traditional approach. Furthermore, we provide extensions of the avoidance control to robotic manipulators with bounded control torques.

This paper presents the design, modeling, and control of a novel soft-rigid knee joint robot (SR-KR) for assisting motion. SR-KR is proposed to assist patients with knee joint injuries conducting gait training and completing walking movements. SR-KR consists of a novel soft-rigid bidirectional curl actuator, a thigh clamping structure, and a crus clamping structure. The actuating part of SR-KR is composed of soft materials, which ensures the wearing comfort and safety, while the wearing parts contain rigid structure, which ensures the efficient transmission of torque. The bending deformation model of SR-KR is established, which reveal the relationship among SR-KR’s bending curvature, working pressure, and output torque. Experiments show that SR-KR can provide more than 26.3 Nm torque for knee joint motion in human gait range. A double closed loop servo control system including attitude servo and pressure servo is built to better apply SR-KR. Mechanical property test, trajectory-driven test, and lower limb wearing test have been conducted, which show that SR-KR has ability to assist in lower limb motion and has potential in the fields of rehabilitation and human enhancement.

An unexpected path reversal is discovered for a serial robot with an offset-axis wrist over a finite range of proximity to the wrist singularity. This is replicated by a kinematic model. A prior spherical-wrist method transits the singularity with limited joint rate and acceleration under a constant rate of tool traversal. Accurate position is maintained by controlling a small deviation in orientation. Extensions to the method for an offset wrist (1) find the least-maximum deviation, (2) identify and locate where a path reversal occurs, and (3) use this point to control step size in a high-order predictor-correction path following procedure.

Accurate dynamic model is essential for the model-based control of robotic systems. However, on the one hand, the nonlinearity of the friction is seldom treated in robot dynamics. On the other hand, few of the previous studies reasonably balance the calculation time-consuming and the quality for the excitation trajectory optimization. To address these challenges, this article gives a Lie-theory-based dynamic modeling scheme of multi-degree-of-freedom (DoF) serial robots involving nonlinear friction and excitation trajectory optimization. First, we introduce two coefficients to describe the Stribeck characteristics of Coulomb and static friction and consider the dependency of friction on load torque, so as to propose an improved Stribeck friction model. Whereafter, the improved friction model is simplified in a no-load scenario, a novel nonlinear dynamic model is linearized to capture the features of viscous friction across the entire velocity range. Additionally, a new optimization algorithm of excitation trajectories is presented considering the benefits of three different optimization criteria to design the optimal excitation trajectory. On the basis of the above, we retrieve a feasible dynamic parameter set of serial robots through the hybrid least square algorithm. Finally, our research is supported by simulation and experimental analyses of different combinations on the seven-DoF Franka Emika robot. The results show that the proposed friction has better accuracy performance, and the modified optimization algorithm can reduce the overall time required for the optimization process while maintaining the quality of the identification results.

In order to resolve redundancy and path planning of a high DOF mobile manipulator using conventional approaches like Jacobian and a pseudoinverse method, researchers face the limitation of computational load and delay in response. If such kind of mobile manipulator is traversing the rough terrain, then conventional methods become too costly to implement due to the handling of redundant joints, obstacles, and wheel-terrain interaction. A few optimization-based redundancy resolution approaches try incorporating wheel-terrain interaction but fail in real-time response. This paper describes a 14 DOF Rover Manipulator System’s end-effector path-tracking approach using CG-Space framework to incorporate wheel-terrain interaction. CG-Space means the center of gravity (CG) locus of the Rover. The Rover’s CG is calculated while traversing over 3D terrain using a multivariable optimization method and a 3D point cloud image of the actual terrain and stored as CG-Space over the given terrain. First of all, we decide which part of the system moves to track the path, that is, arm or Rover, depending upon the manipulator’s work volume and manipulability measure restrictions. The next task is to obtain the Rover pose according to the end-effector path using a simple arm’s inverse kinematic solution between the CG-Space and end-effector task space without resolving redundancy. Meanwhile, obstacles and non-traversable regions are avoided in CG-Space. On diverse 3D terrains, simulation and experimental results support the suggested CG-Space framework for end-effector tracking.
