Aristocracia y señorío son conceptos claves para comprender la evolución económica castellana en los siglos XVI y XVII. En la actualidad tenemos ya, para lo que al reino de Castilla se refiere, conocimientos sólidamente fundados al respecto: contamos con buenos trabajos jurídicos sobre el señorío y con precisas descripciones sociológicas de la aristocracia; disponemos también de obras que, dedicadas al estudio de algunas zonas concretas, han aportado valiosas consideraciones sobre las rentas señoriales, su peso y el papel que desem-peñan en ciertas parcelas de la economía; se ha avanzado en el concepto de la llamada «crisis de la aristocracia». Sin embargo, y al contrario de lo que ocurre en otros países, e incluso en otros ámbitos peninsulares, los análisis se han planteado desde ópticas que, aunque enriquecedoras, no siempre han arro-jado toda la luz que sería de desear sobre los nexos con los procesos económicos a largo plazo y las transformaciones sociales en el tránsito de la sociedad feudal al capitalismo. Problemas como el del crecimiento económico, la transición o el cambio de las estructuras económicas, sociales y políticas han estado con demasiada frecuencia ausentes de estudios que muchas veces estaban obligados a planteárselos; a menudo incluso por imposición de sus propias hipótesis de partida.

This work offers a new vision of the agrarian reformism carried out by the Government during the Restauración. This revision focusses on die study of the contributions of Rafael Gasset, die everlasting minister of Fomento during the Restauración —a duty he occupied nine times between 1900 and 1923— to the solution of so called agrarian question in the historical period which started in the critical moment of 98 and finished with the liquidation of die turno de partidos system in September 1923. The analysis looks at the reasons of die failure of the hydraulic agrarian policy during die years of die Canovite system —in our opinion essentially political—, as well as to the reasons that explain its historical continuity and success during die dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and Franco; it also serves to establish some hypothesis which allow us to understand better the nature of these historical regimes.

El objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir al estudio de las pautas de consumo de tejidos de la población catalana de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. Para Uevarlo a cabo se ha utilizado documentación procedente de la recaudació;n del impuesto de Bolla y, en especial, los libros de Manifest de Botigues. Los resultados han permitido définir las preferencias de la población en el consumo de tejidos, constatar la existencia de tiendas especializadas en la distribución de tejidos importados y en los de seda, y precisar el peso que en la oferta tenian tanto los tejidos de producción autóctona como los de importación. Por último, la información proporcionada por los Manifests ha posibilitado el establecer un índice aproximado de rotación del stock en este tipo de establecimiento.

The 1976/1977 crisis was the most severe in Spanish history, but the losses associated with the 2008 crisis are huge. This paper compares these two great banking crises and identifies the main parallels and differences between them. Is the current crisis as severe as that of 1976? What is the impact on the banking and financial sectors? We show that the 1976 crisis is being surpassed by the 2008 crisis in terms of the decline in GDP, industrial production and unemployment, and that these two events have had at least a similar impact in terms of output gap and output loss. Finally, the financial impact measured by different financial indicators confirms the greater severity of the 2008 crisis.

Foundling hospitals spread across Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, taking in hundreds of thousands of children each year. In Spain, the hospitals of major cities had staffs of more than 1,000 external wet nurses, who worked mainly in rural localities. Their cash wages were key for the household economies of the poor rural and urban populations. This article presents a methodology to interpret wet-nurse wages and explains their utility with respect to other occupations for men and women. Our results include a series of nominal and real wages for wet nurses and a calculation of their contributions to family income. The level of wages these institutions could offer was a major determinant in the supply of wet-nurse labour.

While some authors defend the existence of a widespread economic crisis in Brazil during the 18th century, motivated by the fall in the extraction of precious metals, others suggest that the colonial economy maintained a positive performance thanks to the growth of its domestic market. The main goal of this article is to challenge these two explanations, showing that different rhythms of development characterised Brazil's economy in each of its regions. We show that between the 1750s and 1790s, the Amazon region (Maranhão and Pará) experienced uninterrupted growth. Despite some fluctuations, Bahia and Pernambuco showed a tendency towards growth while the centre-south (Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais) suffered an economic contraction. We conclude that there was a stagnation in the added value of exports from all regions, whilst simultaneous growth for all territories occurred only after 1790.

This paper deals with the evolution of wages in the construction offices of Segovia, one of the most important Castilian and Spanish manufacturing towns, between 1571 and 1807. Part two deals with the nominal wages earned by the building officials and labourers of the city and part three presents the Segovian prices index between 1571 and 1807. Finally, part four analyses the evolution of the real wages earned in the construction offices of the town. Segovian real wages evolved in line with the local economy; after peaking in the first quarter of the 17th century, they experienced a continuous decline, so in 1807 the real wages of Segovian building officials and labourers were 50 per cent of those of the first quarter of the 17th century.

This essay applies the causality test methodology to the series of income and money in Spain between 1904 and 1974. The results are not unambiguous, like in other experiences, but in the Spanish case ambiguity could be explained by the short term behavior of income.

The analysis of the cyclical fluctuatios in Peruvian financial development, and their relationship with the mainly agroexport economy, seeks to contribute to the discussion of the developmental role of Latin American export models. The major findings indicate that domestic financial institutions and elite groups contributed to a relative economic diversification and offered a degree of competition to foreign financial interests. Moreover, the decline of the agroexport model led to a hardly autonomous import-substitution model that resulted in increased financial concentration and policies adverse to financial development.

Over the past two decades it has been questioned whether the electric utility industry is a natural monopoly. Electricity generation is no longer considered a natural monopoly and the topic is debated in relation to electricity distribution. This article explores the main contributions in this field in order to apply their findings to the Spanish Electric Utility Industry in the inter-war period. The study focuses on one of the major Spanish companies, Sociedad Hidroeléctrica Española, and shows that generation, transmission and distribution of electricity were. natural monopolies. The results indicate that the monopolistic structure which the inter-war electric utility industry exhibited was the optimal form of organisation.

Conceived as special types of preindustrial economies, the economies of the mountain areas had many distinctive features. Based on this assumption, three traditional ideas are discussed: that the rural economy in the Ancien Regime was limited to agrarian activities; that the pre-industrial economy functioned independently of, or outside the market and that die mountain areas were a marginal environment. For this reason, this work is based on die analysis of die sierras of La Rioja in the middle of die 18th Century, with special emphasis on multiple occupation (pluriactivity), die role of die market, approaches based on family economies and die importance of communal institutional frameworks.

Este artículo analiza las trayectorias de modernización estructural para la industria de ocho países latinoamericanos (Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, México, Perú, Uruguay) desde 1970 hasta la fecha. Desde una perspectiva teórica estructuralista que explora las interacciones dinámicas entre el cambio estructural y el escalamiento tecnológico, se construye un índice de modernización. Los hallazgos muestran que el establecimiento de modelos económicos neoliberales en Latinoamérica a partir de los años ochenta, significó un punto de ruptura en estas trayectorias. Mientras la racionalización de procesos productivos por parte de las empresas implicó un desplazamiento del empleo en dirección de usos de baja productividad relativa, el desarrollo de industrias intensivas en capital e insertas en dinámicas globales, no impulsó la modernización estructural debido a la naturaleza de las tareas efectuadas. Los ejercicios permiten esbozar una primera tipología en términos de las carencias más apremiantes de cada caso.

The possible existence of Internal Labour Markets (ILMs) in the Spanish railway company MZA at the beginning of the Second Industrial Revolution is explored by means of non-linear Optimal Scaling techniques. The results show the presence of two characteristics of ILMs predicted by the theory: the existence of «ports of entry» for the employees of the company at low levels of qualification, and the presence of long-term labour relations. Thus, in common with recent studies on UK railway companies, we conclude that the company MZA operated some kind of ILM before the start of the 20th Century.

El artículo se enmarca en las líneas de investigación actual sobre la mujer en la economía marítima preindustrial. Se trata de un estudio de caso centrado en las capitanas y las patronas durante el auge del corso en Mallorca entre 1635–80. En él se destaca la labor de las mujeres de mar como procuradoras de sus maridos mientras permanecían ausentes, especialmente cuando la situación les exigió demostrar iniciativa e ir más allá de lo estipulado en la procura. Asimismo, se constata un mayor protagonismo en cuatro áreas de la empresa corsaria, mientras ésta se rigió por un modelo de corte familiar.

El propóosito del libro de Carlos Barciela, Inmaculada López, Joaquín Melgarejo y José A. Miranda, al que dedicamos esta nota, es ofrecer una visión general de la historia económica del franquismo. Este empeño se enmarca en un proyecto editorial más amplio que incluye un volumen dedicado a la evolución política y social en el mismo período, firmado por E. Moradiellos, y otro, a la cultura y vida cotidiana, por J. Gracia García y M. A. Ruiz Carnicer. En el volumen consagrado a estudiar la economía española durante el franquismo se presenta un actualizado estado de la cuestión sobre el tema. Una revisión de este tipo resulta especialmente oportuna en un momento como el actual, en que la extensión de la bibliografía aparecida en los últimos años hace dificil para el estudioso del período abarcar todas las facetas relevantes y en que, además, las nuevas investigaciones estân poniendo en duda alguna de las más asentadas interpetaciones mantenidas hasta hoy.

This essay analyzes the influence of Necker's ideas as contained in Informe de Ley Agraria of Jovellanos. We have demonstrated that the methodology and economic thought of Necker play an important role in this work. This proves that this author has had a stronger influence in Spain than has been previously admitted and leads us to reflect on the presence of his relativist and interventionist thought in this fundamental text of Spanish enlightenment liberalism.

El presente trabajo tiene por objeto poner de manifiesto en qué medida y qué instrumentos de la teoría cantidad de dinero de los precios tal y como se configura en la actualidad detectaron los escolásticos españoles del xvi.

La exposición consta de tres partes. En la primera se recorren los hitos principales de la historia económica castellana durante el siglo xvi. En la segunda, se presenta una explicación monetaria de los precios utilizando la teoría del dinero actual. Y en la tercera, se pasa revista a las piezas analíticas que, de la explicación actual, detectaron con alguna nitidez los economistas escolásticos.
