A chronological sequence of soils formed on a series of alluvial depositional surfaces ranging in age from late-middle Miocene to late Pleistocene was characterized to clarify soil-geomorphic relations and provide a basis for allostratigraphic subdivision of the inner Coastal Plain. On Quaternary river terraces, Ultic Hapludalfs containing abundant weatherable mineral species and clast types are estimated to have formed in 60,000-120,000 yr, whereas Typic Hapludults greatly depleted in weatherable minerals and showing strong weathering of clast types are estimated to be 700,000-1,600,000 yr old. Typic Paleudults with incipient plinthite, duripan, and ferricrete development characterize interfluves that have been little eroded since early Pliocene time (3.4-5.3 myr ago). Typic-Plinthic Paleudults with intense weathering of siliceous clasts and moderate to strong duripan and ferricrete development are found on surfaces that formed near the beginning of late Miocene time (10.8-13.0 myr ago). Chemical weathering in the chronosequence may be classified into three progressive stages: (1) decomposition of unstable sand- and silt-sized minerals into a mixed (stable + unstable) clay-mineral suite (stable Fe + Al/Si bulk chemical composition, < 106 yr); (2) transformation of mixed clay-mineral suite into a stable suite (increasing Fe + Al/Si bulk chemical composition, 106 - 107 yr); and (3) transformation of stable suite into ultrastable clay-mineral suite (increasing Fe/Si bulk composition, > 107 yr). Not all soil properties show unidirectional development, nor is a steady state of pedon development observed even after approximately 107 yr of chemical weathering. Soil development in the chronosequence is episodic. The transition from one phase to the next is marked by a change in rate, and sometimes a reversal in the direction, of development of one or more soil properties.

During strong El Niño events, rainfall anomalies and changes in wind patterns are observed in different regions of South America. Along the central Brazilian coast, during the 1983 El Niño year, the frontal systems were blocked to the south, provoking a reversal of the longshore sand transport. Long-duration reversals of longshore transport were also recorded in Holocene beach-ridge terraces from the Rio Doce coastal plain. This led to the formulation of a model relating these reversals of longshore transport to El Niño-like conditions. El Niño-like conditions are past average climate situations that generate the same perturbations as the strong El Niño events observed during the last decade. They are likely to correspond to the long-duration low phase of the Southern Oscillation. To confirm this hypothesis we compared the Holocene beach-ridge record with other palaeoenvironmental records from regions where strong El Niño events would have a substancial signal as well: (1) water-level fluctuations of Lake Titicaca, (2) a pollen and sediment record in an eastern Amazonian lake, (3) changes of the Rio Xingu discharge in eastern Amazonia, and (4) variations of sand supply at the Rio Piura and Rio Chira outlets in the Sechura Desert. The occurrences of El Niño-like conditions were numerous before 3900-3600 yr B.P., absent between 39003600 and 2800-2500 yr B.P., and infrequent after 2800-2500 yr B.P.

The Holocene geomorphic history of southeastern Louisiana's middle Amite River is recorded in the stratigraphy of three alloformations, identified in decreasing age as the Watson (WAT), Denham Springs (DS), and Magnolia Bridge (MAG). The WAT meander belt formed by at least 9000 yr B.P., when sea level was lower and the Amite River was tributary to a larger ancestral drainage basin. The DS became an active meander belt by at least 3000 yr B.P., in response to relative sea-level rise and eastward progradation of the Mississippi River delta plain. The MAG developed its meander belt, in part, during the European settlement of the drainage basin, and is now attempting to adjust to modern anthropogenic influences. Geomorphic influences on the middle Amite River floodplain have temporal and spatial components that induce regional- and local-scale effects. Regional extrinsic influences caused meander belt avulsion that produced alloformations. However, local influences produced intrinsic geomorphic thresholds that modified channel morphology within a meander belt but did not induce alloformation development. Base-level influences of the relative sea-level rise and the Mississippi River delta plain were so dominant that the effects of possible climate change were not recognized in the Holocene Amite River system.

Packrat (Neotoma spp.) middens from the White Mountains indicate climatic and plant community conditions for the last 19,000 yr. During full-glacial times (ca. 19,000 yr B.P.) and at the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary juniper woodlands were 600 m lower in elevation than at present. Midden assemblages and stable-isotope data suggest lower temperatures and increased precipitation relative to the present into the early Holocene. Two early Holocene middens (ca. 8000 yr B.P.) from lower elevations of the White Mountains contain fragments of pinyon pine and indicate that both pinyon and juniper grew at a site that today supports only a pinyon woodland. Two middle Holocene middens (ca. 5000 yr B.P.) indicate that there was an upward migration of pinyon-juniper woodlands along a high-elevation ecotone, but little change in the middle of the pinyon-juniper woodland. Middens from the late Holocene indicate that present-day plant communities were in place by ca. 2000 yr B.P. or before.

Amino acid ratios of gastropods provide a useful basis for correlation and approximate dating of middle to late Quaternary fluvial deposits from the northern Española basin, New Mexico. Sparsely fossiliferous slackwater deposits in the Rio Chama-Rio Grande floodplain were buried episodically by piedmont alluvium during periods of climatic change as the axial river system cut down 120 m during the past 620,000 yr. Alloisoleucine/isoleucine (alle/Ile) ratios in the total hydrolysate and free fraction of amino acids in Succinea and Vallonia are strongly correlated with elevation. Ratios in Succinea range from 0.01 to 0.79 in the total hydrolysate and from 0.00 to 1.15 in the free fraction for deposits that range in age from modern to ⩾620,000 yr old. Amino acid ratios are tightly clustered for deposits that contain the 620,000-yr-old Lava Creek B tephra layer, demonstrating their utility for correlation and providing a calibration point for a local dating curve. Two 14C ages from younger deposits and limiting ages for erosion surfaces that lie above gastropod-bearing units tend to support the validity of much of the curve. Combining the dating curve with the geologic constraints suggests that aggradation events, separated by episodes of net incision, occurred at about 620,000, 310,000 ± 70,000, 170,000 ± 40,000, 95,000 ± 15,000 yr ago, after 19,000 yr ago, and during two minor periods between 80,000 and 25,000 yr ago.

Soil tongues, or soil fingers, have been identified along the walls of an active gravel pit in northeastern Indiana. Locally enhanced pedogenesis, primarily carbonate leaching and clay illuviation, has resulted in wedge- and cone-shaped extensions of the B horizon into the underlying calcareous glaciofluvial sediments. Although previously described in the literature, the features at this site are considered unusual both for the numerous well-defined tongues and for the regularity of tongue spacing, which gives the illuviation front the appearance of a high-amplitude sinusoidal wave train. Depth to the illuviation front was measured at 0.25-m intervals along a 40-m exposure. Statistical tests indicate that the spatial pattern is nonrandom. The data were transformed using Fourier methods, and the resulting variance spectrum show a peak intensity at wavelengths bracketing 1.5 m. The results of these analyses suggest a surficial or near-surface topographic control. Climatic conditions following local glacier recession favored periglacial activity, and there is some evidence to suggest development of thermal contraction cracks and nonsorted or poorly sorted polygons 1.5 m in diameter. As an alternative hypothesis, laboratory experiments suggest that regularly spaced fingers can develop in homogeneous materials when instability occurs at the wetting front. In this case, soil tongues cannot be used as relict indicators of periglacial activity.

The existing paleoenvironmental data from the Australian arid zone lack sensitivity and come from only a few sites. Macrofossils and pollen from four dated middens of the stick-nest rat (Leporillus spp.) were analyzed from two sites in Western Australia. Animal and plant macrofossil remains were well preserved and provided evidence of change in species distribution within the last 1150 yr. Brush-tail possum and golden bandicoot have contracted their ranges in the recent past, possibly since the introduction of cats into Australia. An undescribed lacewing was also a significant find. Pollen preserved in parts of the same midden and in middens from different sites indicates that records are sensitive to the composition of the local vegetation when the midden was built. Pollen spectra are quite different from playa lakes, which record largely regional vegetation. Pollen preserved in the fecal pellets, desiccated urine, and grass mat nesting material provided similar information but some differences were apparent, suggesting dietary preferences were reflected in the fecal component. The pollen record suggested a trend to less-wooded vegetation cover in central Australia between 900 and 300 yr B.P.

We present direct evidence for the relict nature of lichenspruce woodlands thriving at treeline, using 14C-dated stands growing in the humid climate of eastern Hudson Bay in northern Québec. Black spruce, Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP, forms two groups of relict stands: a Neoglacial group of postfire origin dating between 2000 and 900 yr B.P. and a pre-Neoglacial group most likely established between 4500 and 3200 yr B.P. The latter group shows no evidence of fire (absence of charcoal under topsoil organic horizon). The stands are exceptional because they probably are the direct lineages of the primeval forests that colonized the land sometime after deglaciation. The structure of the relict lichen-spruce communities gives strong support to the current thesis that considers lichen-spruce woodland as a self-perpetuating open forest, typical of the subarctic environment.

The paleoecologic record of the northern Rocky Mountains shows considerable spatial variability, which has been difficult to explain as a unified response to large-scale changes in effective moisture or temperature through time. Comparison of past and present climatic patterns suggests that the spatial heterogeneity in the fossil record arises from a local response to the effects of greater summer solar radiation during the early Holocene. Solar radiation directly determines evapotranspiration and indirectly controls the strength of the summer monsoon and the eastern Pacific subtropical high-pressure system. The Yellowstone region provides an example of an area where the indirect effects of solar radiation are manifest by the juxtaposition of two contrasting climatic regimes today and where these regimes were amplified during the early Holocene. Fossil-pollen data suggest that central and southern Yellowstone (the summer-dry area) became drier in the early Holocene, while northern Yellowstone (the summer-wet area) became wetter. The boundary between regimes, however, is controlled by topography and has not changed significantly in the Holocene. The spatial variations of Holocene vegetation and climatic changes in the northern Rocky Mountains may therefore be explained as a trade-off between strengthened monsoonal circulation and a stronger subtropical high in the early Holocene and the relative importance of these precipitation regimes on a topographically complex landscape.

In Atlantic Canada, bulk-sediment dates for the onset of a late-glacial cooling, widely regarded as the Younger Dryas event, are highly variable, ranging from 14,300 ± 270 to 10,800 ± 100 yr B.P. We present the first accelerator-mass-spectrometer (AMS) 14C dates from Atlantic Canada, at or close to the boundaries of this event, from six sites in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The mean of five dates places the onset of this cooling at ca. 10,770 yr B.P.; the inclusion of a sixth, perhaps anomalously old date, changes the mean to 10,880 yr B.P. The termination averages (three dates) ca. 10,000 yr B.P. These dates place the timing of the Younger Dryas event in Atlantic Canada closer in line with the traditional chronozone boundaries of 11,000 and 10,000 yr B.P. in Northwest Europe.

A model of pollen deposition on the surface of an entire basin is developed to estimate pollen source area, and results are compared with those for a point at the center of a basin (I. C. Prentice, 1985, Quaternary Research 23, 76-86; 1988, "Vegetation History," (pp. 17-42, Kluwer Academic). This model is more appropriate for approximating the source area of pollen in lake sediment, since mixing in lake water and focusing of sediment redistribute pollen originally deposited over the entire surface. In general, the pollen source radius for the entire basin surface is 10-30% smaller than the source radius for a point at the center; the difference in the source radius is more profound for heavier pollen types such as spruce and sugar maple than for lighter types such as oak and ragweed. The average pollen input to the entire surface is more strongly influenced by nearby pollen sources than pollen deposition at the center. The pollen record from a lake may therefore provide different spatial resolution than the record from a bog of similar radius.

During the latter part of the last (Otira) glaciation the forest cover of New Zealand was much reduced. It has frequently been postulated, however, that diverse mixed forest communities survived in the far north of North Island. Pollen diagrams and radiocarbon dates from two last glacial and postglacial (Aranuian) sits on the Aupouri Peninsula in the far north of New Zealand are compared with other published palynological and plant macrofossil evidence from the region. Mixed kauri/podocarp/angiosperm forest was present at times during the late Otiran (and Aranuian) and no evidence was found for substantial loss of forest. However, radiocarbon samples from one site, at least, seem to have been contaminated with young carbon; this introduces uncertainty into the chronology established at that site. Possibly nondeposition or erosion has obscured part or all of the late Otiran record at all the sites studied so that very much reduced forest cover at that time cannot be ruled out.

Paleoenvironmental changes dating back to 30,000 yr B.P. documented in a pollen record from central Brazil (lat. 19°S) permit the reconstruction of climatic changes related to shifts of the Antarctic polar fronts. The paleoclimatic inferences were obtained by a study of modern vegetation and pollen distribution, taking into account present-day climatic parameters. At 30,000 yr B.P. the climate must have been warmer and moister than today judging from the high amount of tree pollen taxa characteristic of floodplain forest. From 17,000 to 14,000 yr B.P. the climate was drier although tree pollen percentages were relatively high. After 12,000 yr B.P. Araucaria forest elements increased, suggesting a moister and cooler climate. The Araucaria forest disappeared during a short interval between 11,000 and 10,000 yr B.P. This could be related to the Younger Dryas event. At the beginning of the Holocene the climate became cool and moist again, as indicated by the reexpansion of the Araucaria forest. The latter was progressively replaced by a mesophytic semideciduous forest indicating warmer and drier climate after 8500 yr B.P. At 5000 yr B.P. an arid interval was followed by the expansion of mesophytic semideciduous forest elements.

The world's peatlands contain about 450 GT of readily decomposeable organic carbon. Peat-forming systems have two main layers, of which the lowest is the thickest and includes the peat proper. The upper layer fixes carbon by photosynthesis, loses it by selective decay, and passes on about 15% to the lower zone; here decay continues, although very slowly. One consequence is that as for Point Escuminac, New Brunswick, the relation of age to depth may be concave. Although the surface of the peatland is as productive as ever, the true rate of carbon accumulation is decreasing; after 10,000 yr it is only 33% as efficient at sequestering carbon as it was when the peatland began to grow. Peatlands are usually thought to represent sinks for carbon, but a warming climate could make some peatlands carbon sources rather than sinks, thus initiating positive feedback.

Pollen and plant macrofossil analyses and dating (both TAMS and conventional 14 C) of wetland sediments from the Nodoroc Site in the Piedmont region of northeastern Georgia identified two depositional episodes of interstadial (ca. 26,000-22,000 yr B.P.) and mid- to late Holocene (<3600 yr B.P.) age. Interstadial pollen assemblages were dominated by Pinus and Quercus, with Carya, Picea, and Abies also present in significant amounts. The interstadial assemblages had lower Pinus and higher Quercus pollen percentages than apparently contemporaneous assemblages from sites in the southern Appalachians and Coastal Plain. Interstadial macrofossils included two needle morphotypes of Pinus subgenus Pinus, possibly indicating local occurrence of two Pinus species. One of the needle morphotypes is consistent with Pinus banksiana, but other species cannot be ruled out. Comparison of conventional and TAMS 14C dates illustrates problems in obtaining accurate age models from wetlands and ponds characterized by shallow or fluctuating water levels, low sedimentation rates, and vegetation growing on the depositional surface.

Reevaluation of Quaternary sites of fossil pika (Ochotona) lends no support for the inference that Nearctic pikas were not restricted to rocky habitat. The saxicolous nature of all widespread, isolated populations of extant Nearctic pikas and their closest Palearctic sister taxa support consideration of O. princeps, and perhaps all Nearctic Quaternary Ochotona , as indicators of cool, mesic, rocky situations. As indicators of rocky microhabitat, fossil remains of O. princeps do not require that the entire region was cool and mesic, but only that suitable rocky microhabitat existed in the vicinity. Use of fossil pika dung alone as indicative of pikas in the immediate community is suspect, as the small, round, and buoyant pellets may be transported downslope by hydraulic flushing of talus habitat. Current local elevational lower limits (E) of appropriate habitat for paleoecological reconstruction at extralimital fossil sites are predicted by the equation: E(m) = 14087 - (56.6)°N - (82.9)°W.

Tree-ring data from subalpine conifers in the southern Sierra Nevada were used to reconstruct temperature and precipitation back to A.D. 800. Tree growth of foxtail pine (Pinus balfouriana) and western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis ssp. australis) is influenced by nonlinear interactions between summer temperature and winter precipitation. Reconstruction of the separate histories of temperature and precipitation is feasible by explicitly modeling species and site differences in climatic response using response surfaces. The summer temperature reconstruction shows fluctuations on centennial and longer time scales including a period with temperatures exceeding late 20th-century values from ca. 1100 to 1375 A.D., corresponding to the Medieval Warm Period identified in other proxy data sources, and a period of cold temperatures from ca. 1450 to 1850, corresponding to the Little Ice Age. Precipitation variation is dominated by shorter period, decadal-scale oscillations. The long-term record presented here indicates that the 20th century is anomalous with respect to precipitation variation. A tabulation of 20- and 50-yr means indicates that precipitation equaling or exceeding 20th-century levels occurred infrequently in the 1000+-yr record.

Twenty-two plant species were identified from leaves, fruits, or flowers, and 41 taxa from pollen, present in a macrofossil (leaf) layer in a peat swamp formed on Pleistocene dunes on the Aupouri Peninsula in northern New Zealand. Eight genera of gymnosperms are represented. With the exception of Lagarostrobos colensoi, all tree species abundant as macrofossils are also common as pollen. Macrofossils enabled the on-site flora to be compared with the regional flora, represented by the pollen rain. Studies on leaf decomposition rates indicate bias toward sclerophyllous species in the macrofossils. Identification to species level and treering data from preserved kauri logs allow quantitative comparisons with similar extant communities. Current climatic conditions at those analogue sites are cooler (2° to 3°C), cloudier (11%), and much wetter (85%) than those currently prevailing on the Aupouri Peninsula. Dendrochronological results also suggest that the far north of New Zealand had a cooler, cloudier, and wetter climate at the time the fossil leaf assemblage was formed. Radiocarbon dates from possibly contaminated samples suggest that a diverse mixed gymnosperm/angiosperm forest, dominated by kauri (Agathis australis), was present about (or sometime before) 41,00034,000 yr B.P., when the leaf layer was formed. Similar temperature reductions have been postulated for this period in New Zealand by other authors.

Sediments exposed at Epiguruk, a large cutbank on the Kobuk River about 170 km inland from Kotzebue Sound, record multiple episodes of glacial-age alluviation followed by interstadial downcutting and formation of paleosols. Vertebrate remains from Epiguruk include mammoth, bison, caribou, an equid, a canid, arctic ground squirrel, lemmings, and voles. Radiocarbon ages of bone validated by concordant ages of peat and wood span the interval between about 37,000 and 14,000 yr B.P. The late Pleistocene pollen record is dominated by Cyperaceae, with Artemisia, Salix, Betula, and Gramineae also generally abundant. The fossil record from Epiguruk indicates that the Kobuk River valley supported tundra vegetation with abundant riparian willows during middle and late Wisconsin time. Large herbivores were present during the height of late Wisconsin glaciation as well as during its waning stage and the preceding interstadial interval. The Kobuk River valley would have been a favorable refugium for plants, animals, and possibly humans throughout the last glaciation.

New magnetostratigraphic results may be used to determine the age of two locally important fossil vertebrate faunas near Geelong (Victoria), Australia. Paleomagnetic samples collected from sections located at Limeburner's Point and Limeburner's Bay, together with previously suggested stratigraphic correlations, now constrain the age of the Duck Ponds Local Fauna to be younger than 1.66 myr (and probably greater than 0.98 myr) and the age of the Limeburner's Point Local Fauna to be younger than 0.98 myr. These age determinations enhance the biostratigraphic importance of both local faunas on a continent characterized by a chronic lack of chronologically well-constrained fossil vertebrate localities.
