The classification of orientable vector bundles over CW-complexes of dimension ≦8 is given in terms of characteristic classes using elementary homotopy theoretic methods and relations among characteristic classes.

Modulus and coefficient bounds for functions mean p-valent in the interior of an ellipse, analogous to known bounds for the unit disc, are established in this paper.

Our basic theorem is a version of the implicit function theorem in the case of continuous groups of symmetries. The result is sufficiently general to cover a great many applications. It generalizes some earlier work of the author and corrects and improves some work of Vanderbauwhede. We also consider the breaking of symmetries problem and the variational case. Finally, we apply our results to study the periodic solutions of an ordinary differential equation.

The Fibonacci groups F(r, n) have been studied by various authors, chiefly in order to determine which ones are finite. This article contains a summary of the known results about this problem, followed by some further results obtained by the author. In particular, the orders of the groups F(r, 3) for r ≡ 2 (mod 3) and F(r, 4) for r ≡ 2 (mod 4) are determined, and various other Fibonacci groups are proved infinite by methods similar to those of Chalk and Johnson.

Liouville type transformations are given for symmetric linear ordinary and partial differential operators of second order. Explicit formulas are given for the coefficients of the transformed operators. As a corollary to the general theory we obtain an “Atkinson form” for certain first order vector partial differential operators. This leads to a generalization of the concept of “g-unitary” transformations. Applications to oscillation and spectral theories are included.

We consider the eigenvalue problem

for self-adjoint operators Ai and Bij on separable Hilbert spaces Hi. It is assumed that and Bij are bounded with compact. Various properties of the eigentuples λi, and xi are deduced under a “definiteness condition” weaker than those used by previous authors, at least in infinite dimensions. In particular, a Parseval relation and eigenvector expansion are derived in a suitably constructed tensor product space.

The weight functions w(x) for which the Riemann fractional integral operator Iα is bounded from the Lebesgue space Lp(wp) into Lq(wq), l/q = l/p −, have been characterized by Muckenhoupt and Wheeden. In this paper, we prove an inversion formula for Iα in the context of these weighted spaces and we also characterize the range of Iα as a subset of Lq(wq) Similar results are proved for other fractional integrals. These results may be viewed as weighted analogues of certain results of Stein and Zygmund, Herson and Heywood, Heywood, and Kober who considered the unweighted case, w(x) = l.

Let J(KG) be the Jacobson radical of the group algebra KG of a finite p-solvable group G over a field K of characteristic p > 0, and let t(G) be the least positive integer t such that J(KG)t = 0. In this paper we determine the structure of G with t(G) = 4 under the assumption that H is abelian, H is metacyclic, or the order of H is not divisible by 3 where H = O2'(G).

It is shown that the equation (p2y”)”–(p1y’)’+ p0y = 0 has exactly two linearly independent solutions on [0,∞) with finite Dirichlet integral when the coefficients are nonnegative and p2 satisfies a condition which includes all nondecreasing functions. An inequality for the Dirichlet form is derived and used to extend characterizations of the domains of certain self-adjoint operations associated with the differential expression to arbitrary symmetric boundary conditions at 0.

In this paper, a formally J-symmetric, linear differential expression of 2nth order, with complex-valued coefficients, is considered. A number of results concerning the location of the essential spectrum of associated operators are obtained. These are extensions of earlier work dealing with complex Strum-Liouville operators, and include results which, in the real case, are due to Birman, Glazman and others. They lead to criteria, for the non-emptiness of the regularity field, of the corresponding minimal operator-a condition which is needed in the theory of J-selfadjoint extensions.

Under appropriate conditions on b and a function g with 2k +1 simple zeros, the equation

has a maximal compact invariant set Ab,g in C([−1,0]R), consisting of the zeros of g and the one-dimensional unstable manifolds of these zeros. For k =2, it is shown that there may be a saddle connection in the flow on Ab,g for some g. This implies that the zeros of g as elements of the flow on Ab,g cannot be given the natural order of the reals.

In this paper the author investigates a system of simultaneous dual trigonometric series equations. A closed form solution is obtained by reducing the dual series to singular integral equations of Carleman type. The use of these equations is then illustrated by their application to a crack problem in the theory of elasticity.

By an inverse transversal of a regular semigroup S we mean an inverse subsemigroup that contains a single inverse of every element of S. A certain multiplicative property (which in the case of a band is equivalent to normality) is imposed on an inverse transversal and a complete description of the structure of S is obtained.

We continue with the work of an earlier paper concerning the use of partial differential equations to prove the uniform convergence of the eigenfunction expansion associated with a left definite two-parameter system of ordinary differential equations of the second order.

In this note the differential expression M[y] ≡ − y” + qy, q∈Lp(ℝ+) for some p ≧ l, is considered on [0,∞) together with the boundary condition either y(0) = 0 or y'(0) = 0. Lower bounds are given for the spectrum of the self-adjoint operators T generated by M[·] and these boundary conditions. The bounds depend on the Lp-norm of the coefficient q and they improve results of Everitt and Eastham. The bounds are optimal.

The paper deals with the differential equation

on [ 0, ∞) Where λ>0 and the coefficients qm are complex-valued with qn continuous and non-zero, w is positive and continuous and qm for m = 0, 1,…, n − 1. In the first part of the paper the exponential behaviour of any solution of (*) is given in terms of a function ρ(λ) which is roughly the distance of λ from the essential spectrum of a closed, densely denned linear operator T generated by T+ in L2(0, ∞ w). Next, estimates are obtained for the solutions in terms of the coefficients in (*). When the latter results are compared with the estimates established previously in terms of ρ(λ), bounds for ρ(λ) are obtained. From the general result there are two kinds of consequences. In the first, criteria for ρ(λ) = 0 for all All λ > 0 are obtained; this means that [0, ∞) lies in the essential spectrum of T in appropriate circumstances. The second type of consequence concerns bounds of the form ρ(λ) = O(λr) for λ → ∞ and r<1.

We characterize direct products of finite monogenic inverse semigroups; we show that a finite monogenic inverse semigroup which is not a group is directly indecomposable and that a finite semigroup which is decomposable into a direct product of monogenic inverse semigroups which are not groups is uniquely so decomposable. We determine when a finite semigroup can be decomposed into a direct product of non-group monogenic inverse semigroups and show how the direct factors, if they exist, can be found.

An asymptotic expansion in powers of the small parameter of the solution of a singularly-perturbed system of integro-differential equations with a non-linear boundary condition set at several points of the interval considered is constructed and verified.

Let A be a unital C*-algebra and let B be an abelian C*-subalgebra containing the identity of A. For any pure state h of B let Fh be the set of states of A which restrict to h on B. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for an element x in A to have the property that, for each h, x is unable to distinguish between distinct elements of Fh. By specializing, this leads to a new proof of a theorem giving necessary and sufficient conditions for Fh to be a singleton for each h.

It is also shown that if A is postliminal and π(B) is a maximal abelian C*-subalgebra of π(B) for each irreducible representation π of A then Fh is a Choquet simplex for each h.
