This note explains a “numerical coincidence” observed by Professor A. C. Aitken in a recent article in these Proceedings.

In order to estimate the number of partitions of a multi-partite number, the components of which are all large and of approximately the same order of magnitude, it is necessary to evaluate for ℛ(z1) > o(l=1, 2, …,j — 1) the integral

where

for o < u < 2π min (1, |z1|−1, …, |zj−1|−1) and Asymptotic expansions are obtained for I when the z1 are small. Simple expressions give an approximate value of I when every zl is real and exact formulæ are derived when every Zl is real and rational.

The distribution of xn, the number of occurrences of a given one of k possible states of a non-homogeneous Markov chain {Pj} in n successive trials, is considered. It is shown that if Pn → P, a positive-regular stochastic matrix, as n → ∞ then the distribution about its mean of xn/n½ tends to normality, and that the variance tends to that of the corresponding distribution associated with the homogeneous chain {P}.

Metrisable Lie algebras have been defined by Tsou and Walker (1957). Their definition is adopted below in § I.

The object of the present paper is to display something of the geometrical background of such algebras, particularly for those taken over the field of real numbers.

§ I is introductory. In § 2 appears a statement, made as brief as possible because it is wholly classical, of the relationship between the vector-space of the Lie algebra L and the associated affine and projective spaces A and P. Some properties of metrisable Lie algebras are then examined in terms of the geometry of P, which provides an (n –I)-dimensional map of the n-dimensional algebra L. It is assumed throughout the paper that the Lie algebras under discussion are non-abelian, since the projective map of an abelian algebra presents nothing of interest.

As the present work is intended as no more than a preliminary, it is confined, so far as its applications are concerned, to a discussion of metrisable algebras of dimensions 3 and 4 and to one example of an algebra of dimension 6.

I have been privileged in preparing the paper to have access to the typescript of the paper by Tsou and Walker referred to above, and also to the doctoral thesis (1955) of the former. I am greatly indebted to them both, and also to Dr Paul Cohn and to a referee for suggestions regarding certain details of presentation.

In this paper are considered certain numbers called moduli associated with a rectangular matrix with complex elements. These moduli have to satisfy a set of conditions analogous to those satisfied by the modulus of a complex number. For a complex rectangular matrix A = (aij) it is shown that R(A), C(A) and | A |° are moduli of A where:

where cmin(H) and cmax(H) denote, respectively, the minimum and maximum characteristic values of the hermitian matrix H, A* being the transpose conjugate of A. Using the various properties of a modulus of a matrix and taking R(A), C(A) and | A |° as the moduli, a number of known results about the characteristic values of a matrix are obtained and extended. Relations between |A|°, |A |° R(A), p(A) and C(A), ɣ(A) are also studied. These relations provide a number of results about estimates of bounds of characteristic values of sums and products of matrices.

If the temperature in an elastic rod is not uniform and if it varies with time, dynamic thermal stresses are set up in the rod. This paper is concerned with the calculation of the distribution of temperature and stress in an elastic rod when its ends are subjected to mechanical or thermal disturbances. Simple waves in an infinite rod are first discussed and then boundary value problems for semi-infinite rods and rods of finite length. The paper concludes with an account of an approximate method of solving the equations of thermoelasticity.

Investigations based on gas masses, bright star counts, and luminosity-mass ratios of galaxies lead to one of two conclusions. If the galaxies are all of the same age, the faint ends of the initial luminosity functions of stars at formation differ greatly from one galaxy to another. On the other hand consistent results in the analysis are obtained with luminosity functions that are more nearly constant and ages which range from one to thirty thousand-million years. The various possibilities can be tested by observations on the Magellanic Clouds.

Equations are set up which describe, as functions of time, the integrated properties of a galaxy as a system of stars and gas.

Algebras which are nilpotent and anti-commutative are studied. Canonical forms are found for all such algebras of dimension n whose centres have dimension n−r (r < 3), and characters are given which enable any two non-isomorphic algebras to be distinguished.

A metrisable Lie algebra is a Lie algebra for which there is a non-singular, symmetric, adjoint-invariant bilinear form a(λ, μ), and such an algebra is reduced if its centre is contained in its derived algebra. The importance of the reduced algebras follows from the fact that every metrisable Lie algebra is the direct sum of a reduced metrisable Lie algebra and an abelian Lie algebra. Tsou (Thesis 1955) introduced metrisable Lie algebras, and obtained canonical forms for all real reduced metrisable Lie algebras whose derived algebras have dimension 3. We conclude this paper by providing an alternative derivation, two of the algebras being nilpotent.

An asymptotic formula is given for the number r(s, P; N) of representations of an integer N as the sum of s non-negative squares, where each square does not exceed P2. The numbers s, P and N are large and are subject to certain conditions, one of which is that N is approximately ⅓sP2.

The bivariate distribution corresponding to the univariate negative binomial, and the corresponding distribution when sampling is without replacement, are investigated. Formulas are derived for the factorial moment generating functions and for the regression equations, which are linear.

The presence of a non-uniform distribution of temperature in an elastic solid gives rise to an additional term in the generalized Hooke's Law connecting the stress and strain tensors and to a term involving the time rate of change of the dilatation in the equation governing the conduction of heat in the solid. The present paper is concerned with the effects produced by these additional terms in two simple situations. In the first, the elastic solid is regarded as being of infinite extent and the distribution of temperature in the solid is produced by heat sources whose strength may vary with time. In the second, the solid is supposed to be semi-infinite and to be deformed by prescribed variations in the temperature of the bounding plane and by heat sources within itself.

The preparation of substituted fluoranthenes by the aromatization of hydrogenated fluoranthene derivatives is described. 8-Nitrofluoranthene, one of the nitration products of fluoranthene, has been synthesized from 2-nitrofluorene and the preparation and properties of some 2-nitrofluorene derivatives of potential synthetic value are reported.

Sets of integers are constructed having the property that n members are in arithmetical progression only if they are all equal; here n is any integer greater than or equal to 3. Previous results have been obtained only for n=3. The problem is generalized in various ways. The analysis can also be applied to construct sets for the analogous problem of geometrical progressions. These sets are of positive density, unlike those of the first kind, which have zero density.

The commutative and entropic congruence relations determine a homomorphism on the free logarithmetic , the arithmetic of the indices of powers of the generating element of a free cyclic groupoid. A necessary and sufficient condition that two indices should be concordant (i.e. congruent in the free commutative entropic logarithmetic) is that the bifurcating trees corresponding to these indices should have the same number of free ends at each altitude. It follows that the free commutative entropic logarithmetic can be represented faithfully by index ψ-polynomials (or θ-polynomials) in one indeterminate.

In the concluding section enumeration formulæ are obtained for the number of non-concordant indices of a given altitude and for the number of indices concordant to a given index.

Every algebraic equation can be uniformized by automorphic functions belonging to a certain group of bilinear transformations. In certain cases, such as for hyperelliptic equations, this group is a subgroup of the monodromic group of a differential equation of the form

where R(z) is a rational function which, in general, contains unknown parameters as coefficients. A conjecture of E. T. Whittaker regarding the values of these parameters for the hyperelliptic case is proved for a wide variety of algebraic equations whose branch points possess certain symmetric properties, and is extended to equations of higher type. In several cases, the uniformizing functions belong to subgroups of the groups of the Riemann-Schwarz triangle functions.

The synthesis of 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-1, 6-naphthyridine and 1, 6-naphthyridine is described and the ultra-violet spectra of these and related substances are discussed.

S. T. Tsou and A. G. Walker have defined the I-extension of a given Lie algebra as a certain Lie algebra on the Cartesian product of the given algebra and one of its ideals (Tsou 1955). I-extensions have been studied also in connection with metrisable Lie groups and metrisable Lie algebras. The definition can be applied immediately to any anti-commutative algebra, and in this paper properties of such I-extensions are established. A list of all proper I-extensions of dimension not greater than four over a field of characteristic zero is also given together with a set of characters.

The roots of the equation zez = a are of importance in several theories. Various authors have studied certain of their properties over more than a century. Here we solve the equation, in the sense that we define the sequence {Zn} of roots and, except for a small, finite number of values of n, find a rapidly convergent series for Zn. The terms in this series are alternately real and purely imaginary and so the series is very convenient for calculation. For the few remaining roots, we give practicable methods of numerical calculation and supply an auxiliary table.

The main results of this article have been announced without proof or details in Wright 1959.

Certain families of measures on coset-spaces, namely inherited, stable, and pseudo-invariant measures, were defined, and shown to exist, in earlier papers, where Jacobians and factor functions, generalizing the idea of Jacobians in theory of functions of several variables, were also denned. In this paper, the existence is established of exact Jacobians and factor functions, which satisfy certain characteristic identities exactly, without an exceptional set of measure zero. A study is made of how properties of a measure are reflected by properties of the Jacobian or the factor function. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a function to be an exact Jacobian for some measure.

A result proved elsewhere concerning the structure of linear algebras of genus one is used (i) to classify Jordan algebras of genus one, and (ii) to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an algebra of genus one to be simple. The class of simple Jordan algebras of genus one and dimension not less than 4 over an algebraically closed field is shown to coincide with the class of simple Jordan algebras of degree two.
