The Kudryashov–Sinelshchikov–Olver equation describes pressure waves in liquids with gas bubbles taking into account heat transfer and viscosity. In this paper, we prove the existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with this equation.

We show that the spectrum of the relativistic mean curvature operator on a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝN (N ⩾ 1) having smooth boundary, subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, is exactly the interval (λ1(2), ∞), where λ1(2) stands for the principal frequency of the Laplace operator in Ω.

There is an enormous literature on the so-called Grenander estimator, which is merely the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator of a nonincreasing probability density on [0, 1] (see, for instance, Grenander (1981)), but unfortunately, there is no nonasymptotic (i.e. for arbitrary finite sample size n) explicit upper bound for the quadratic risk of the Grenander estimator readily applicable in practice by statisticians. In this paper, we establish, for the first time, a simple explicit upper bound 2n−1/2 for the latter quadratic risk. It turns out to be a straightforward consequence of an inequality valid with probability one and bounding from above the integrated squared error of the Grenander estimator by the Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistic.

Conjugation spaces are topological spaces equipped with an involution such that their fixed points have the same mod 2 cohomology (as a graded vector space, a ring and even an unstable algebra) but with all degrees divided by two, generalizing the classical examples of complex projective spaces under complex conjugation. Spaces which are constructed from unit balls in complex Euclidean spaces are called spherical and are very well understood. Our aim is twofold. We construct ‘exotic’ conjugation spaces and study the realization question: which spaces can be realized as real loci, i.e., fixed points of conjugation spaces. We identify obstructions and provide examples of spaces and manifolds which cannot be realized as such.

We prove that Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras satisfy Edwards' condition with respect to every quasitrace. This condition is a key ingredient in the study of the realization problem of functions on the cone of quasitraces as ranks of positive elements. In the course of our investigation, we identify additional structure of the Cuntz semigroup of an arbitrary C*-algebra and of the cone of quasitraces.

This paper concerns with the existence of multiple solutions for a class of elliptic problems with discontinuous nonlinearity. By using dual variational methods, properties of the Nehari manifolds and Ekeland's variational principle, we show how the ‘shape’ of the graph of the function A affects the number of nontrivial solutions.

This paper is concerned with the existence results for generalized transition waves of space periodic and time heterogeneous lattice Fisher-KPP equations. By constructing appropriate subsolutions and supersolutions, we show that there is a critical wave speed such that a transition wave solution exists as soon as the least mean of wave speed is above this critical speed. Moreover, the critical speed we construct is proved to be minimal in some particular cases, such as space-time periodic or space independent.

The sequence of prime numbers p for which a variety over ℚ has no p-adic point plays a fundamental role in arithmetic geometry. This sequence is deterministic, however, we prove that if we choose a typical variety from a family then the sequence has random behaviour. We furthermore prove that this behaviour is modelled by a random walk in Brownian motion. This has several consequences, one of them being the description of the finer properties of the distribution of the primes in this sequence via the Feynman–Kac formula.

We consider the mass-critical non-linear Schrödinger equation on non-compact metric graphs. A quite complete description of the structure of the ground states, which correspond to global minimizers of the energy functional under a mass constraint, is provided by Adami, Serra and Tilli in [R. Adami, E. Serra and P. Tilli. Negative energy ground states for the L2-critical NLSE on metric graphs. Comm. Math. Phys. 352 (2017), 387–406.] , where it is proved that existence and properties of ground states depend in a crucial way on both the value of the mass, and the topological properties of the underlying graph. In this paper we address cases when ground states do not exist and show that, under suitable assumptions, constrained local minimizers of the energy do exist. This result paves the way to the existence of stable solutions in the time-dependent equation in cases where the ground state energy level is not achieved.

This work, motivated by the rapid developments in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) structures, especially actuators and grippers, analyses the dynamics of a thermo-mechanical system consisting of a horizontal beam joined at one end to a vertical rod. As a result of thermal expansion or vibration of the rod, the other end may come into contact with another part of the MEMS device and that closes an electrical circuit, which is the actuating or switching function of such a beam–rod system. The interaction between the rod's contacting end and the supporting device is described by a normal compliance contact law for the displacements and by an inclusion-type Barber's heat exchange condition for the temperature. The heat-exchange coefficient is a multi-function taking into account the air resistance in the gap when there is no contact and the contact pressure when contact occurs. The model consists of a nonlinear variational inclusion for the temperature coupled with a nonlinear variational equation for the displacements. The existence of a weak solution to the problem is proved by using the Galerkin method, a regularization of Barber's condition with the Yosida approximation of a maximal monotone operator, and a priori estimates.

For a continuous-time random walk X = {Xt, t ⩾ 0} (in general non-Markov), we study the asymptotic behaviour, as t → ∞, of the normalized additive functional $c_t\int _0^{t} f(X_s)\,{\rm d}s$, t⩾ 0. Similarly to the Markov situation, assuming that the distribution of jumps of X belongs to the domain of attraction to α-stable law with α > 1, we establish the convergence to the local time at zero of an α-stable Lévy motion. We further study a situation where X is delayed by a random environment given by the Poisson shot-noise potential: $\Lambda (x,\gamma )= {\rm e}^{-\sum _{y\in \gamma } \phi (x-y)},$ where $\phi \colon \mathbb R\to [0,\infty )$ is a bounded function decaying sufficiently fast, and γ is a homogeneous Poisson point process, independent of X. We find that in this case the weak limit has both ‘quenched’ component depending on Λ, and a component, where Λ is ‘averaged’.

For Laplacians defined by measures on a bounded domain in ℝn, we prove analogues of the classical eigenvalue estimates for the standard Laplacian: lower bound of sums of eigenvalues by Li and Yau, and gaps of consecutive eigenvalues by Payne, Pólya and Weinberger. This work is motivated by the study of spectral gaps for Laplacians on fractals.
