In May/June 2005, Chandra observed M81 fifteen times, roughly once every three days, as part of our proposal to explore the days to weeks timescale of variability for extragalactic point sources. Each observation reached a sensitivity of $5\,{\times}\,10^{36}$ erg/s. Because these observations probe the timescale on which X-ray binaries typically evolve, we can now compare extragalactic sources to Galactic X-ray binaries on a more equal level than has been possible in the past. In addition, we can measure and quantify any possible time variability of M81's X-ray luminosity function and investigate alternative methods to characterize a galaxy's dynamic X-ray source population. We present here preliminary results of the observations.

There have been important advances in radio astronomy in the last three years. New discoveries both at the galactic and extragalactic scale have been reported over this period and we highlight here several of them. The outstanding results of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe satellite, allowing an accurate determination of the main cosmological constants, are certainly among the most important. At the international level, the consolidation of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array project, with participation of the USA, Europe, and Japan and an estimated cost of around one billion US dollars, takes the construction of radio telescopes to a new level of complexity and potential. We also include the Progress Report of the Working Group on Historic Radio Astronomy, that includes a description of the duties and activities of this recently created working group.

Simulations of galaxy formation require strong feedback to produce realistic galaxies. Observations of starburst galaxies both at low and high redshift often show signatures of strong galaxy-wide winds. Are such winds common, and are they the mechanism which pollutes the intergalactic medium with metals? Which are the sources of ionising photons at higher redshift? Detailed observations of galaxies and their surroundings and comparison with cosmological simulations to eliminate biases and test models are required to address these questions.

We study the cross-correlation between 716 Mg II quasar absorption systems and $\sim 100,000$ Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 in the redshift range $0.4\!\leq\!z\!\leq\!0.8$. The Mg II systems were selected to have $\lambda\lambda$ 2796 & 2803 rest-frame equivalent widths $\geq\!1.0$$\AA\$ and identifications confirmed by the FeII$\lambda 2600$ or MgI$\lambda 2852$ lines. Over co-moving scales 0.2–13$h^{-1}{\rm \,Mpc}$, the MgII–LRG cross-correlation has an amplitude $0.69 \pm 0.09$ times that of the LRG–LRG auto-correlation. Since LRGs have halo-masses of $10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, this strong cross-correlation signal implies that the absorber host-galaxies have halo-masses $1-2\times 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$.

Despite much work, the connection between dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) and dwarf irregulars (dIs) remains unclear. Recently, we found that the surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of dIs in the near-infrared can be well fitted with a hyperbolic secant (sech) function. From sech fits, a tight relationship was derived between the absolute magnitude, central surface brightness, and 21cm line widths, which amounts to a fundamental plane for dIs. Here we examine how closely dEs fit into the dI fundamental plane using published data for 22 dEs in the Virgo cluster and the Local Group. Over a 9 mag interval in absolute magnitude the dEs fall in the plane defined by the dIs. The outstanding overlap suggests more than a casual relationship between the two classes.

With the notable exception of those originating on the Moon and Mars, all known meteorites are pieces of objects in the asteroid belt. As such, they have recorded a succession of chemical processes, starting from reactions in the interstellar medium (ISM), followed by reactions that accompanied the formation and evolution of the early solar system, and culminated with reactions during aqueous alteration in the meteorite parent bodies. One of the challenges in meteorite research is to decipher this record and to learn about interstellar formation processes as well as to conditions in the early solar system. The rare class of carbonaceous chondrites contains up to 5% by weight of organic carbon, most of which is locked in an insoluble macromolecular material and only about 20% of it is in the form of distinct organic compound classes. The molecular and isotopic data of these organic compounds clearly show an interstellar heritage, but a fraction of these precursors were later modified. For example, the amino acids were probably formed inside the meteorite parent body during the aqueous alteration period from simple molecules such as HCN, NH3 and carbonyl compounds. However, the CI type carbonaceous chondrites contain a significantly distinct amino acid composition, indicating that there may be other synthetic processes involved. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are probably the most abundant form of organic carbon in the gas phase in the ISM. PAHs are among the most abundant organic compounds in carbonaceous meteorites, and they have been shown to have a presolar origin. A fraction of these PAHs are present in an extractable form, while the rest is part of the insoluble macromolecular matter. Progress is being made in the understanding of the evolution of this material in relation to aqueous alteration and oxidation. Although the potential of cometary meteorites cannot be ruled out, no such macro-meteorite has been recognized in the meteorite collections. Therefore, the organic composition of comets has been inferred mostly from astronomical observations. Future in-situ investigation of comets with spacecraft such as Rosetta will deliver new data on their organic composition, in particular the non-volatile fraction. However, in order to understand the contributions of different formation processes in primitive solar system objects, the analysis of the organic composition of meteorites remains essential.

The ALADDIN concept is an integrated Antarctic-based L-band experiment whose purpose is to demonstrate nulling interferometry and to prepare the DARWIN mission. Because of their privileged location, the relatively modest collectors (1 m) and baseline (up to 40 m) are sufficient to achieve a sensitivity (in terms of detectable zodi levels) which is about twice better than that of a nulling instrument on a large interferometer (such as GENIE at the VLTI), and to reach the 20-zodi threshold value identified to carry out the DARWIN precursor science. These numbers are based on a preliminary design study by Alcatel Alenia Space and were obtained using the same simulation software as the one employed for GENIE. The integrated design enables top-level optimization and full access to the light collectors for the duration of the experiment, while reducing the complexity of the nulling breadboard.

Direct detection and spectroscopic characterization of earth-like exoplanets require to eliminate the starlight in the recorded signal at a rejection level (collected flux / residual flux) around 10$^{6}$ in the thermal infrared domain. Another need is to reach angular resolution in the range 0.1 to 0.01 arcsec. In this context, nulling interferometry is recognized as the preferred instrumental approach. In the framework of the ESA-Darwin mission, preliminary studies for nulling systems have been initiated, the prime goal to achieve being mastering nulling process. In this purpose, Alcatel Space has developed a nulling test-bench, operating in near infrared (1.55 $\mu$m), not only to demonstrate capability of obtaining an appropriate rejection level but also to study and characterize the use of emerging techniques. The Darwin system will ultimately benefit from these results. In this paper, we report the most recent configuration of the Alcatel Space nulling breadboard which uses the multi-beam recombination technique, current baseline for Darwin. The results obtained with this version shows rejection performance at nearly 10$^{5}$ (stable level) with a polychromatic source ($\lambda$ = 1.55 $\mu$m, $\Delta\lambda$= 80 nm).

The enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) with heavy elements provides us with a record of past star formation and with an opportunity to study the interactions between galaxies and their environments. We discuss what future observations with extremely large telescopes could do for this field. We conclude that a further increase in the quality of the spectra of bright, $z\sim 3$ quasars will be useful, but may not lead to dramatic progress. In contrast, the ability to obtain high-quality spectra of $z>5$ quasars will be extremely exciting because they will allow us to extend studies of the distribution of metals to early times and to lower density contrasts, and because they may enable us to study the end of reionization. Spectacular progress in our understanding of the interactions between galaxies and the IGM can be made at $z\sim 3$, by obtaining accurate redshifts for large numbers of faint galaxies in the fields of bright quasars, and by obtaining low and intermediate resolution absorption spectra of some of the brighter galaxies.

The Tully-Fisher (TF) relation is an empirically establish correlation between the luminosity of a spiral galaxy and its rotational velocity (Tully-Fisher, 1977). We used the Tully-Fisher relation to probe the dark matter (DM) distribution in the optical regions of spiral galaxies. We investigated a sample of rotation curves that includes 957 galaxies. We applied a new technique that takes advantage of the full knowledge of the galaxy rotation curves.

We present the results of a Chandra observation made of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 7793: the effective exposure time of this observation was 49094 seconds. Twenty-two discrete sources were identified at a minimum of a 3$\sigma$ level to an estimated limiting luminosity of ∼$2\times10^{36}$ ergs sec$^{-1}$. We have performed a spectral analysis of the known ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in this galaxy: statistically-acceptable fits to the spectrum can be obtained with either a power law model, a bremsstrahlung model or a DISKBB model. We have also searched for counterparts at multiple wavelengths to these sources: based on this search, we have classified two supernova remnants, one HII region and two foreground stars.

The spatial distribution of the gas in the intergalactic medium and its physical properties can be recovered thanks to the characteristics of the Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines that are observed in the spectra of high redshift quasars, the so-called Ly$\alpha$ forest. We use inversion methods applied to a network of lines of sight to infer the topology of the intergalactic medium, based on reconstruction of the density field. The method has already been tested on simulated data.

On 4 July 2005 at 5:52 UT the Deep Impact mission successfully completed its goal to hit the nucleus of 9P/Tempel 1 with an impactor, forming a crater on the nucleus and ejecting material into the coma of the comet (A'Hearn et al. 2005). The 370 kg impactor collided with the sunlit side of the nucleus with a relative velocity of 10.2 km s$^{-1}$. NASA's Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observed the $1_{10}-1_{01}$ ortho-water ground-state rotational transition in comet 9P/Tempel 1 before, during, and after the impact. No excess emission from the impact was detected by SWAS. However, the water production rate of the comet showed large natural variations of more than a factor of three during the weeks before the impact.

Division XI was born by merging Commission 44 “Space and High Energy Astrophysics” and Commission 48 “High Energy Astrophysics” by the decision at the IAU General Assembly in The Hague (1994). As the naming of space astronomy is technique oriented, i.e. astronomy from space, it covers quite a wide range of astronomy, almost all branches of astronomy are included by the progress of space observations. Historically, it started from high energy astronomy, UV, X, and gamma rays astronomy, somewhat including cosmic ray physics. However, in these days, space observations have expanded to low energy astronomy, such as optical, infrared, submillimeter and even radio waves(Space VLBI).

We have derived [Fe/H] and [α/Fe] abudnances for Cepheids with Galactocentric distances of 11 to 17 kpc. The stars are as metal-poor as much older open clusters at comparable distances. Like the clusters, and despite their youth, the Cepheids also show enhanced [α/Fe] abundances indicating enhanced contributions from SNe II relative to the Solar neighborhood.

We present results from our ongoing survey of Galactic Giant HII Regions in the near-infrared. The luminosity function indicates that the IMF is uniform, independent of the galactocentric distance and compatible with Salpeter (1955) slope. Distances measured by the spectroscopic parallax method are systematically smaller than kinematic distances derived from radio techniques. As a consequence, the number of ionizing photons and the star formation rate is much lower than that derived from rotation models. Although the luminosities of the giant HII regions obtained from this method are lower than by other methods, the morphological type of the Milky Way is well in line of previous results, close to Sbc or Sc types.

One hundred early-type members of the Virgo Cluster have been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as part of the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. The survey and its extensions consists of F475W and F850LP imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), supplemented by additional imaging and spectroscopy from WFPC2 HST, Chandra, Spitzer, Keck, KPNO, and CTIO. In this article, I report briefly on four scientific highlights from the program: (1) the discovery of a population of probable ultra-compact dwarf galaxies; (2) an improved measurement of the frequency of compact stellar nuclei in early-type galaxies; (3) a precise new measurement of Virgo's line-of-sight depth; and (4) new insights into the chemical evolution of galaxies from the color distributions of their globular cluster systems.

We will review the metallicity of the CIV and OVI phases of the IGM in the redshift range $z\sim 0.1$-5 together with their contributions to the cosmic baryon density. The current studies are limited to regions with overdensities of 3-10; the heavy element enrichment in regions with gas densities close to the mean cosmic density will be probed with future ELTs. We will also investigate the possibilities of detecting metals at $z\sim 10$ and underline the requirements on ELTs due to the anticipated faintness of the early generations of galaxies, QSOs and transient objects.

Super star clusters are one of the most extreme star forming environments in the universe, and the most massive and dense of these may be proto globular clusters. Like individual massive stars, the earliest stages of super star cluster evolution are deeply obscured, and therefore our knowledge about their birth environments is currently very incomplete. However, the study of natal super star clusters has become somewhat of a cottage industry in recent years, and the sample of such objects has been growing rapidly with high-quality long-wavelength data now available from a number of observatories. The natal super star clusters identified in thermal-infrared and radio observations represent the youngest stage of massive star cluster evolution yet observed. Their properties appear to be similar to those of ultracompact hII regions in the milky way, but scaled up in total mass and luminosity. I will overview what we think we know about these objects based on existing observations, discuss their relationship to ultracompact hII regions, present new models of their spectral energy distributions based on 3-d simulations, and outline some of the most significant gaps in our current understanding.
