As a prerequisite to returning their molecular inventory to the gas phase, icy grain mantles must desorb from the refractory core material of the grain. This desorption process can be instigated through interactions with photons or cosmic rays but can equally well be thermally driven. In this invited paper, the application of thermal desorption techniques borrowed from ultrahigh vacuum surface science to problems of astronomical interest will be discussed. The experimental methods employed by surface scientists to probe thermal desorption processes will be described and the analysis of the resulting empirical data outlined. The results of recent laboratory measurements from a number of groups will be highlighted.

Nulling Interferometry applied to the search and characterization of earth-like exoplanets requires to eliminate the star's contribution at a rejection level (Rej = collected energy/residual energy)larger than $10^{6}$ over a large bandwidth (6 to 18 $\mu$m). Nulling test-benches are in development in several laboratories so as to master such high a rejection. One approach relies on a Mach-Zehnder set-up with Achromatic Phase Shifters (APS). One APS concept is based on the focus-crossing property, providing an intrinsically achromatic phase shift by $\pi$. Using a confocal configuration for the focus-crossing approach, a Fresnel's diffraction effect degrades the rejection. Usual optical engineering softwares fail in assessing rejection performance and an analytical approach is needed. We describe the bench optical configuration and the Fresnel's diffraction effect as well as a possible way for correction. Then we describe the analytical method, based on Lommel's integrals, to evaluate the expectable rejection.

Supernova remnants are the remains of the outer envelope of the supernova progenitor star. Neutron stars are one of the possible remnants of the region where the explosion detonated. Our knowledge, from galactic studies, of SNRs is well established as their morphology can be understood in terms of the initial blast and out-gassing during the last stages of the progenitor. However, observationally the link between neutron stars and SNRs is only poorly established. During a supernova there are a number of possibilities to produce a condensed remnant - no remnant; a neutron star (pulsar?); a magnetar; a black hole or something more exotic. We do not know what fraction of supernovae go down these possible paths. In the ELT era we will have the first real opportunity to sample the pulsar population in external galaxies and get a more comprehensive survey of optical emission from local pulsars. Such a survey would have significantly reduced biases compared to the current state of radio surveys particularly in the area of pulsar-SNR statistics. Furthermore, a 50m telescope will be able to survey galaxies out to at least 20 Mpc for young SNRs using H$\alpha$:[OIII] and H$\alpha$:[SII] ratios. Currently there are over 1500 radio pulsars detected, 14 of which have been observed at optical wavelengths. Although small in number the family of optical pulsars yield much useful information in bridging the gap between the long wavelength radio emission and the high energy gamma-ray emission from pulsars. Specifically optical techniques are currently the only way of detecting polarisation in the high-energy regime. The advent of ELTs will increase the detection rate of local galactic pulsars and provides the possibility of detecting a significant number of extragalactic optical pulsars. Phenomenologically, the Pacini scaling law predicts $\sim$150 galactic pulsars to have pulsed optical emission with an m$_{V} <$32. Using SKA, Crab-like giant radio pulses should be detectable out to 7 Mpc. In contrast Crab-like pulsars would have a normal peak pulsed m$_{V}\,\sim$31 at 10 Mpc making ELT optical observations more sensitive than radio observations and the best method for extragalactic pulsar discovery. To date only five AXPs have observed IR emission and two optical emission. ELTs will be able to sample the AXP population within the Galaxy as well as the local group again providing better statistics for the birth rate of AXPs compared to ‘normal’ pulsars. A combination of an AXP and ‘normal’ pulsar survey will make a significant contribution to the birthrate question - what fraction of supernovae produce pulsars compared to AXPs and other condensed objects?

During the period 2004 to 2005, the following symposia and colloquia were related to the activities of the commission: The A-Star Puzzle (IAUS224), Massive Star Birth: A Crossroads of Astrophysics (IAUS227), and From Lithium to Uranium: Elemental Tracers of Early Cosmic Evolution (IAUS228).

The evolution of dwarf galaxies, particularly any potential morphological evolution among the different types of dwarf galaxies, remains poorly understood. The interstellar medium (ISM) in dwarf galaxies is thought to be more strongly disturbed by star formation episodes in these low mass galaxies, including supernovae-driven winds during starbursts and star formation induced by galaxy-galaxy interactions. Loss of the ISM has been postulated to result in the evolution of dIrrs to dE/dSphs. However, disentangling the relative importance of environmental (galaxy harassment) versus local stocastic processes on star formation, and their effects on subsequent morphological evolution is still a very active area of research. So-called “transition dwarf” galaxies are galaxies that have properties that fall somewhere between gas-rich dIrrs and gas-poor dE/dSphs, and may provide clues to the overall evolutionary history of dwarf galaxies. We report on some recent work on a sample of vigorously star-forming dwarf “transition” galaxies, and suggest that they may be examples of the bridge between dIrrs and dEs/dSphs.

XMM-Newton and Chandra have ushered in a new era for the study of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. We provide an overview of the opportunities, challenges, and some early results. The large number of background sources relative to galaxy sources is a major theme. Despite this challenge, the identification of counterparts has been possible, providing hints that the same mechanisms producing X-ray sources in larger galaxies are active in dwarf galaxies. A supersoft X-ray source within 2″ of the supermassive black hole in M32 may be a remnant of the tidal disruption of a giant, although other explanations cannot be ruled out.

The interferometry is the most promising way to directly observe exoplanets, their spectra and surfaces at optical or infrared domain. The complex imaging process can be described as the extraction of information from the data gathered by the interferometer. This information can be treated to be independend on any à priori knowledge or the integration process. In this case it is analyzed in a classical way. In fact, the imaging of exoplanets is not the classical way of the data reconstruction. The best extraction of information requires all accessible à priori knowledge. This is the bayesian way. The knowledge gathered during an integration is also contributing as à priori information for futher image reconstruction. We disscuss both approaches supporting the analysis with the estimates of information flow through the interferometer and examples of simulations of imaging.

As documented by the reports of the Presidents of Commission 28 and Commission 47 the fields of extra-galactic research and cosmology have experienced a higher and higher development leading to a vast harvest of results and discoveries. They range from the description of the overall structure of the universe to that of the individual properties of galaxies. The availability of very large telescopes and the coverage of regions of the sky with deep surveys, on the observational side, and the wide use of sophisticated numerical simulations on the theoretical one are starting to produce a satisfactory understanding of the physical processes taking place during the evolution of galaxies. Very often there is an profitable interplay between the subjects of the two Commissions without clearcut boundaries. This makes Division VIII, which is one of the largest of the IAU, counting 1373 members, very well balanced and deserving to remain without modifications for the future.

The propagation of cosmological ionisation fronts (I-fronts) during reionisation is strongly influenced by small-scale structure. Here we summarise our recent attempts to understand the effect of this small-scale structure. We present high resolution cosmological N-body simulations at high-z ($z>6$) which resolve a wide range of halo mass, from mini-halos to clusters of large, rare halos. We also study how mini-halos affect I-fronts, through simulations of mini-halo photo-evaporation including numerical gas dynamics with radiative transfer. Furthermore, we modify the I-front propagation equations to account for evolving small-scale structure, and incorporate these results into a semi-analytical reionisation model. When intergalactic medium clumping and mini-halo clustering around sources are included, small-scale structure affects reionisation by slowing it down and extending it in time. This helps to explain the observations of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, which imply an early and extended reionisation epoch. We also study how source clustering affects the evolution and size of H II regions, finding, in agreement with simulations, that H II regions usually expand, and rarely shrink. Hence, “relic H II regions” are an exception, rather than the rule. When the suppression of small-mass sources in already-ionised regions by Jeans-mass filtering is accounted for, H II regions are smaller, delaying overlap. We also present a new numerical method for radiative transfer which is fast, efficient and easily coupled to hydrodynamics and N-body codes, along with sample tests and applications.

A new class of carbon-rich stars was revealed by large surveys of very metal-poor objects, the carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars (CEMPs). This carbon enhancement is reminiscent of that found in classical CH stars, which despite being halo stars, are not as metal-poor as CEMPs. Although a mass-transfer scenario similar to that formerly at work in CH stars could account for the abundance pattern of CEMPs, differences arise for some key heavy elements. Moreover, statistical studies find 14%; of metal-poor C-rich stars among very metal-poor stars. Thus, this important population of stars represents a precious testimony for nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution at early stages of the Galaxy. We have started a detailed analysis of a large sample of both CH and metal-poor C-rich stars. Here we present results concerning the chemical composition obtained via high resolution and high signal-to-noise VLT-UVES spectra, with special emphasis on the challenges encountered during the abundance analysis. The discussion also includes preliminary results of our ongoing radial velocity monitoring programme which aims at evaluating the relevance of the binary scenario.

The HST Treasury Program on the Orion Nebula Cluster has been recently completed (May 2005). Using 104 orbits of HST time we have imaged a field ${\sim }1/6$ of a square degree nearly centered on the Trapezium stars. The survey, made with ACS, WFPC2 and NICMOS-Camera 3 in parallel, has imaged this cornerstone region with unprecedented sensitivity (23-24 mag), dynamic range (${\sim}12$ mag), spatial resolution (50mas), and wide spectral coverage (9 filters from U to H). We have assembled the richest, most accurate and unbiased dataset of stellar photometry for pre-main-sequence objects ever obtained, an essential tool for understanding of the star formation process in regions dominated by massive OB stars.

A series of experiments on the surface reactions of hydrogen and deuterium atoms with solid CO, formaldehyde (H2CO), and methanol (CH3OH) has been performed. Successive hydrogenation of CO on surfaces at $\sim $10 K was found to proceed efficiently via tunneling to produce H2CO and CH3OH on dust grains under the typical conditions of molecular clouds. Formation rates are strongly dependent on the surface temperature and composition. The role of surface reactions in the formation of deuterated formaldehyde and methanol was investigated. The deuterium fractionation of methanol observed in molecular clouds was reproduced experimentally via H-D substitution in solid methanol at an accreting atomic D/H ratio of 0.05-0.1. This is the first evidence that grain-surface reactions can be responsible for fractionation. We have determined several effective rate constants for hydrogenation, deuteration, and H-D substitution to construct the surface reaction network for CO, H2CO, CH3OH, deuterated formaldehyde, and deuterated methanol.

Star formation in starbursts produces compact star clusters which extend in mass up to the super star clusters (SSCs) which resemble young globular clusters. Compact young massive star clusters (cYMCs) in turn cluster along with other young stars into starburst clumps. Using M82 as an example we briefly review how the presence of starburst clumps affects the evolution of the host galaxy. Extremely large telescopes (ELTs) will be essential for understanding how starburst clumps and their constituent star clusters evolve. In nearby systems their combination of sensitivity and angular resolution will allow us to explore the structures, kinematics, and abundances of cYMCs. For systems at cosmological distances the high surface brightnesses of the starburst clumps makes them prime gateways for exploring the early evolution of galaxies.

The classical trajectory methodology for studying scattering of ions, atoms, or molecules from ice surfaces, and photodissociation of water at or in the surface of ice, is presented. The forces between the collider and the water molecules, or between the fragments of a dissociating molecule and the surrounding water molecules, are based on pair potentials taken either from ab initio calculations or derived empirically. Dynamical observables like sticking probabilities and kinetic energy distributions of desorbing photo-fragments are computed by solving Newton's equations of motion, starting from representative initial conditions. Four studies with relevance to astrochemistry are considered: the sticking of H atoms to ice Ih, the sticking of CO to ice Ih and ice Ia, the sticking of protons to ice Ih, and the photodissociation of water in ice Ih and ice Ia, also with a view to the subsequent chemistry of the H-and OH-products with co-adsorbed molecules. Where possible, the theoretical results are compared with experiments.

Absorbers seen in the spectrum of background quasars are a unique tool to select HI-rich galaxies at all redshifts. These allow us to determine the cosmological evolution of H I gas, $\Omega_{\rm HI+HeII}$, a possible indicator of gas consumption as star formation proceeds. The damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems (DLAs with NHI$\ge$ 10$^{20.3}$ cm$^{-2}$) in particular are believed to contain a large fraction of the H I gas, but there are also indications that lower column density systems, namely “sub-damped Lyman-$\alpha$” systems play a role at high-redshift. Here we present the discovery of high-redshift sub-DLAs based on 17 $z>4$ quasar spectra observed with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on VLT. This sample is composed of 21 new sub-DLAs which, together with another 10 systems from previous ESO archive studies, make up a homogeneous sample. The redshift evolution of the number density of several classes of absorbers is derived and shows that all systems seem to be evolving in the redshift range from $z=5$ to $z\sim3$. The redshift evolution of the column density distribution, $f(N,z)$, down to NHI=10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ is also presented. A departure from a power law due to a flattening of $f(N,z)$ in the sub-DLA regime is present in the data. $f(N,z)$ is further used to determine the H I gas mass contained in sub-DLAs at $z>2$. The complete sample shows that sub-DLAs are important at all redshifts from $z=5$ to $z=2$.

About 20% of the high mass O-type stars in the Galaxy are found outside stellar clusters and associations. In the solar neighbourhood this fraction amounts to 43 O-type stars. In the framework of high-mass star formation, we search for the origins of these stars. We aim at separating the O-type field stars from runaway O-type stars, where the former does not betray any indication of past dynamical interactions resulting in their present field location. We specifically search for the presence of stellar clusters, but also evaluate spatial velocities, distance from Galactic plane, locations in the Galaxy with respect to young stellar clusters. Among our sample of 43, we find that 5 stars are in fact observed in the K-band to be members of previously unnoticed small clusters. On the other hand it is plausible that nearly half the sample (22 objects) could have undergone a dynamical ejection from a young cluster. Based on the current available data, ${\sim }4%$ of the Galactic O-type stars cannot be associated with a stellar cluster. Finally by assuming that stars form in clusters with a power law in membership number with index −1.7 down to “clusters” consisting of single stars, we calculate the expected statistics regarding isolated O stars and O stars in OB-associations. We conclude that the results of the calculations are consistent with the observed statistics of O-type stars.

The SMC is now known to contain many more transient X-ray pulsars than would be expected based on a simple scaling of the number of such sources in the Galaxy by the relative mass of the SMC. We have been conducting regular monitoring observations of the SMC with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer since 1997. This has resulted in the discovery of many of these X-ray pulsars and also provided orbital period measurements from detections of regular outbursts. We can now investigate the differences and similarities of the Galactic and SMC X-ray pulsar populations and consider the origin of the huge SMC X-ray pulsar over-abundance.

Top of the wish list of any astronomer who wants to understand galaxy formation and evolution is to resolve the stellar populations of a sample of giant elliptical galaxies: to take spectra of the stars and make Colour-Magnitude Diagrams going down to the oldest main sequence turn-offs. It is only by measuring the relative numbers of stars on Main Sequence Turnoffs at ages ranging back to the time of the earliest star formation in the Universe that we can obtain unambiguous star formation histories. Understanding star formation histories of individual galaxies underpins all our theories of galaxy formation and evolution. To date we only have detailed star formation histories for the nearest objects in the Local Group, namely galaxies within 700kpc of our own. This means predominantly small diffuse dwarf galaxies in a poor group environment. To sample the full range of galaxy types and to consider galaxies in a high density environment (where much mass in the Universe resides) we need to be able to resolve stars at the distance of the Virgo ($\sim$17 Mpc) or Fornax ($\sim$18 Mpc) clusters. This ambitious goal requires an Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), with a diameter of 50–150m, operating in the optical/near-IR at its diffraction limit.

This report gives a brief overview of some of the activities and developments in extragalactic research over the past three years.

The Planet Detection Testbed is designed to simulate the architecture and operation of a space-borne four-telescope nulling interferometer. Constructed in the form of a dual chopped Bracewell interferometer together with star and planet sources, it reproduces the principal features of the flight beam combiner designed at JPL for the proposed TPF-I Formation Flying Interferometer. The aims of the testbed are to demonstrate stable four-beam nulling and planet detection at representative star-planet contrast ratios. In the flight design, starlight between 7 and 17 micron wavelength is to be nulled, and 2 to 3 micron starlight is used for fringe tracking and phasing the interferometer. There are also metrology systems and alignment systems which are required for deep and stable nulling. The testbed reproduces these features; 2 to 3 micron light from a thermal source is used for fringe tracking, and nulling and planet detection is performed at 10 microns. The testbed also incorporates laser metrology and other systems enabling continuous control of beam alignment. The ultimate goal is to simulate planet detection at star-planet contrast ratios of order $10^{-7}$ during full rotations of the telescope array using the phase chopping method. The latest results from the testbed are presented including four-beam nulling experiments at null depths of $10^{-5}$ and planet signal detections at similar contrast ratios.
