In this contribution I will briefly introduce the concept and objectives of the Open Universe Initiative, as well as describe the first steps of its implementation by Brazil, in conjunction with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), aiming to encourage new interested parties to join the Initiative.

Stellar winds of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are responsible for the production of ∼85% of the gas molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM), and yet very few of the gas phase rate coefficients under the relevant conditions (10 – 3000 K) needed to model the rate of production and loss of these molecules in stellar winds have been experimentally measured. If measured at all, the value of the rate coefficient has often only been obtained at room temperature, with extrapolation to lower and higher temperatures using the Arrhenius equation. However, non-Arrhenius behavior has been observed often in the few measured rate coefficients at low temperatures. In previous reactions studied, theoretical simulations of the formation of long-lived pre-reaction complexes and quantum mechanical tunneling through the barrier to reaction have been utilized to fit these non-Arrhenius behaviours of rate coefficients.

Reaction rate coefficients that were predicted to produce the largest change in the production/loss of Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) in stellar winds at low temperatures were selected from a sensitivity analysis. Here we present measurements of rate coefficients using a pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus with the Pump Laser Photolysis - Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLP-LIF) technique. Gas flow temperatures between 30 – 134 K have been produced by the University of Leeds apparatus through the controlled expansion of N2 or Ar gas through Laval nozzles of a range of Mach numbers between 2.49 and 4.25.

Reactions of interest include those of OH, CN, and CH with volatile organic species, in particular formaldehyde, a molecule which has been detected in the ISM. Kinetics measurements of these reactions at low temperatures will be presented using the decay of the radical reagent. Since formaldehyde and the formal radical (HCO) are potential building blocks of COMs in the interstellar medium, low temperature reaction rate coefficients for their production and loss can help to predict the formation pathways of COMs observed in the interstellar medium.

In this study, we identify patterns among students beliefs and ideas in cosmology, in order to frame meaningful and more effective teaching activities in this amazing content area. We involve a convenience sample of 432 high school students. We analyze students’ responses to an open-ended questionnaire with a non-hierarchical cluster analysis using the k-means algorithm.

We report the results from our ongoing pilot investigation of the use of deep learning techniques for forecasting the state of turbulent flows onto black holes. Deep neural networks seem to learn well black hole accretion physics and evolve the accretion flow orders of magnitude faster than traditional numerical solvers, while maintaining a reasonable accuracy for a long time.

We present the main results from the analysis of the Hα-[NII] emission lines with integral field spectroscopy observations gathered with MEGARA at the GTC of the nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC7469. We obtained maps of the ionised gas in the inner 12.5 arcsec × 11.3 arcsec, at spatial scales of 0.62 arcsec, with an unprecedented spectral resolution (R ˜ 20 000). We characterized the kinematics and ionisation mechanism of the distinct kinematic components (Cazzoli et al.2019).

We construct an X-ray spectral model for the clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), utilizing the Monte Carlo simulation for Astrophysics and Cosmology framework (MONACO: Odaka et al.2016). The geometry of the torus is the same as that in Nenkova et al. (2008), which assumes a power law distribution of clumps in the radial direction and a normal distribution in the elevation direction. We apply our model to the broadband X-ray spectrum of the Circinus galaxy observed with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and NuSTAR. Our model can well reproduce the observed X-ray spectrum, yielding a hydrogen column density along the line-of-sight ${N_{\rm{H}}^{\rm{LOS}}} = 4.86_{ - 0.04}^{ + 0.07} \times {10^{24}}$ cm−2 and a torus angular width ${sigma = 14.7_{ - 0.39}^{ + 0.44}}$ degree.

Young low-mass galaxies with extreme emission-line properties are ubiquitous at high redshift. However, a detailed characterisation of their physical properties, key for understanding cosmic reionisation and the early growth of galaxies, will be only possible with JWST and ELT observations. Rare lower-z analogues of these primeval galaxies provide us ideal laboratories to study in larger detail the complex physical mechanisms taking place in these extreme systems. In this talk, I will review key results from these high-z analogues, with an emphasis on lessons learned from deep spectroscopic observations of green pea galaxies at z ⩽ 0.3. New recent results based on high-dispersion Echelle and IFU spectroscopy of green peas will be presented. They illustrate current advantages and limitations of the chemodynamical analysis for a simultaneous study of the ionised gas kinematics, chemical enrichment and the escape of ionising photons in compact low-mass starbursts.

We present ALMA observations of four different molecular species in showcasing their potential as tracers of physical and chemical conditions in planet forming Herbig Ae disks.

How galaxies reionized the universe remains an open question, but we can gain insights from the low-redshift Green Pea galaxies, one of the only known populations of Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters. Using VLA H i 21 cm observations and HST UV spectra of Green Peas, we investigate how neutral gas content and geometry influence LyC and Lyα escape. Our results suggest that LyC Emitters may have high ratios of star formation rate to H i mass. Low gas covering fractions are common among the population, but not all sightlines are optically thin. Based on the observed relationship between high ionization parameters, low metallicities, and narrow Lyα profiles, we propose that weak stellar feedback at low metallicities results in a gas geometry of dense clumps within a low-density medium, which facilitates Lyα and LyC escape. We address the implications of these results for identifying LyC emitters at high redshift with JWST and ALMA.

The Belgian Repository of fundamental Atomic data and Stellar Spectra (BRASS) aims to provide one of the largest systematic and homogeneous quality assessment to date of literature atomic data required for stellar spectroscopy. By comparing state-of-the-art synthetic spectrum calculations with extremely high-quality observed benchmark spectra, we have critically evaluated fundamental atomic data, such as line wavelengths and oscillator strengths, for thousands of astrophysically-relevant transitions found in the literature and across several major atomic data repositories. These proceedings provide a short overview of the BRASS project to date, highlighting our recent efforts to investigate and quality-assess the atomic literature data pertaining to over a thousand atomic transitions present in FGK-type stellar spectra. BRASS provides all quality assessed data, theoretical spectra, and observed spectra in a new interactive database under development at brass.sdf.org.

This article presents a didactic experience in teacher training carried out in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. The training was carried out on the occasion of a total solar eclipse taking place in this region on July 2, 2019. Prior to this event, the authors, members of NASE, developed training meetings of the Ministry of Education of Santa Fe , on topics of Astronomy. From these workshops, participants of all educational levels with different specialties, carried out with their students school science activities where they applied Astronomy with an interdisciplinary perspective. In this way, the eclipse became an event that made possible an enrichment of astronomical education in the region.

The measurement of Hα luminosity for large numbers of galaxies is important to investigate recent star formation history of galaxies. With SED fitting that includes emission line templates, we extract individual galaxy Hα luminosities from broad-band photometry. We compare Hα luminosity function with the result of a narrow-band survey, HiZELS, and find there are more luminous galaxies in Hα than previously reported. As a result, our derived star formation rate density at z ∼ 2.3 turns out to be 2.2 times higher than previous studies. Most of the offset in the results can be explained by missing Hα in the HiZELS photometric aperture and different methods for dust extinction correction.

The galaxy Mrk 590 is one of the few known ‘changing-look’ Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) to have transitioned between states twice, having just increased its flux after a period of ˜10 years of low activity. In addition to the increase in flux, the optical broad emission lines have reappeared but show a different profile than what was observed before they disappeared. The gas motions in the host galaxy of this changing-look AGN show outflows and dynamical structures able to drive gas to the nucleus, suggesting an interplay between inflow and outflow in the centre of the galaxy.

We analyze the optical properties of Radio-Loud quasars along the Main Sequence (MS) of quasars. A sample of 355 quasars selected on the basis of radio detection was obtained by cross-matching the FIRST survey at 20cm and the SDSS DR12 spectroscopic survey. We consider the nature of powerful emission at the high-Fe ii end of the MS. At variance with the classical radio-loud sources which are located in the Population B domain of the MS optical plane, we found evidence indicating a thermal origin of the radio emission of the highly accreting quasars of Population A.

The “Right to the night sky” outreach project holds astronomy workshops for children and teens deprived of their liberty in juvenile detention centers. It is carried out by an interdisciplinary group of students, graduates, and teachers of Astronomy, Geophysics, Educational Science, Law, Psychology, Social Work, and Social Communication. It’s has been accredited and recognized by the Faculty of Astronomical and Geophysical Sciences, and the National University of La Plata (Argentina) since the year 2014. This work presents the diverse activities developed in the project, the methodologies used, and an analysis of how the project evolved, grew, and expanded over time, continuing what has already been presented by Charalambous et al. (2014) and Haack et al. (2019)

Studying the density profiles of galaxy groups offers an important insight on how large-scale structure in the Universe formed and evolved, since galaxy groups bridge the gap between individual galaxies and galaxy clusters. We aim to probe the total density profile of the galaxy group that is gravitational lensing HELMS18, a submillimeter galaxy at z = 2.39 from the Herschel’s HerMES Large Mode Survey (HELMS), by combining strong gravitational lensing with kinematics of the centrally-located galaxies and kinematics of the group members. We will use high-resolution data of HELMS18 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and multi-object spectroscopic data of the group members from Gemini-GMOS. Our final goal is to combine these observations to probe the stellar and dark matter density profiles and to build a complete description of this galaxy group.

In cosmic environments, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) strongly interact with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons emitted by young stars. Trapped PAH cations ranging in size from 30 to 48 carbon atoms were irradiated by tunable synchrotron light (DESIRS beamline at SOLEIL). Their ionization and dissociation cross sections were determined and compared with TD-DFT computed photoabsorption cross sections. Evidence for radiative cooling is reported.

We explored a sample of 545 local galaxies using data from the 3XMM-DR7 and SDSS-DR8 surveys. We carried out all analyses up to z ˜ 0.2, and we studied the relation between X/O flux ratio and accretion rate for different classes of active galaxies such as LINERs and Seyfert 2. We obtained a slight correlation between the two parameters if the whole sample of AGN is used. However, LINERs and Sy2 galaxies show different properties, slight correlation and slight anti-correlation, respectively. This could confirm that LINERs and Sy2 galaxies have different accretion efficiencies and maybe different accretion disc properties, as has been suggested previously.

In this study, we aim to investigate the relation between nuclear activity and the environment for luminous (L[O III] >7.63 × 1041 erg s–1) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) - that, at these luminosities are classified as quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) - using a sample of 436 type 2 QSOs. Recent studies suggest that there is an excess of interacting hosts in luminous AGN, indicating that interactions trigger the nuclear activity. In order to examine this, it is necessary to select a control sample of non-active galaxies, matched to the active ones by the properties of the host galaxies, such as distance and stellar mass. We present here the results of the search for such a control sample.

We study the metallicity calibrations in high-redshift galaxies using a sample of local analogs of high-redshift galaxies selected from the SDSS survey. Located in the same region on the BPT diagram as star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2, these high-redshift analogs share the same ionized ISM conditions as high-redshift galaxies. We establish empirical metallicity calibrations between the direct gas-phase oxygen abundances and varieties of metallicity indicators in our local analogs using direct Te method. These new metallicity calibrations are the best means to measure the metallicity in high-redshift galaxies. There exist significant offsets between these new high-redshift metallicity calibrations and local calibrations. Such offsets are mainly driven by the evolution of the ionized ISM conditions from high-z to low-z.
