Coronal rain occurs in thermally unstable coronal loops, and comprises cool plasma condensations, falling towards the solar surface, guided by the magnetic field. Sometimes the coronal rain clumps are seen to be subjected to transverse oscillations. The numerical simulations have indicated that coronal rain can onset kink oscillations in coronal loops and can affect the properties of oscillations. In this proceeding, we present the analysis of transverse oscillations in conjunction with coronal rain. Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) is used to examine the characteristics of coronal loop oscillation before and after coronal rain development. The analysis showed that the amplitude and period of oscillations are greater during coronal rain.

Great progress has been made using VLBI techniques to measure trigonometric parallaxes to masers associated with young, high-mass stars, in order to map the spiral structure of the Milky Way. However, large numbers of parallax distance have only been obtained over about half of the Galaxy. Here I discuss the use of 3-dimensional kinematic distances for completing the map with many sources well past the Galactic Center.

We present initial results from our JWST NIRSpec program to study the α-abundances in the M31 disk. The Milky Way has two chemically-defined disks, the low-α and high-α disks, which are closely related to the thin and thick disks, respectively. The origin of the two populations and the α-bimodality between them is not entirely clear, although there are now several models that can reproduce the observed features. To help constrain the models and discern the origin, we have undertaken a study of the chemical abundances of the M31 disk using JWST NIRSpec, in order to determine whether stars in M31’s disk also show an α-abundance bimodality. Approximately 100 stars were observed in our single NIRSpec field at a projected distance of 18 kpc from the M31 center. The 1-D extracted spectra have an average signal-to-noise ratio of 85 leading to statistical metallicity precision of 0.016 dex, α-abundance precision of 0.012 dex, and a radial velocity precision 8 km s-1 (mostly from systematics). The initial results indicate that, in contrast to the Milky Way, there is no α-bimodality in the M31 disk, and no low-α sequence. The entire stellar population falls along a single chemical sequence very similar to the MW’s high-α component which had a high star formation rate. While this is somewhat unexpected, the result is not that surprising based on other studies that found the M31 disk has a larger velocity dispersion than the MW and is dominated by a thick component. M31 has had a more active accretion and merger history than the MW which might explain the chemical differences.

The aim of this survey is the homogeneous characterization of a large sample of H ii regions with active star formation in order to detect observational trends supporting the two main models of massive star formation.

In this work, we focus on the period-luminosity relation (PLR) of δ Sct stars, in which mode excitation and selection mechanisms are still poorly constrained, and whose structure and oscillations are affected by rotation. We review the PLRs in the recent literature, and add a new inference from a large sample of δ Sct. We highlight the difficulty in identifying the fundamental mode and show that rotation-induced surface effects can impact the measured luminosities, explaining the broadening of the PLR. We derive a tight relation between the low-order large separation and the fundamental radial mode frequency (F0) that holds for rotating stars, thus paving the way towards mode identification. We show that the PLRs we obtain for different samples are compatible with each other and with the recent literature, and with most observed δ Sct stars when taking rotation effects into account. We also find that the highest-amplitude peak in the frequency spectrum corresponds to the fundamental modein most δ Sct, thus shedding some light on their elusive mode selection mechanism.

We present results from our ongoing infrared spectroscopic studies of the massive stellar content at the Center of the Milky Way (GC) and across the obscured Galactic disk. Together with the full characterization of these clusters, we seek to obtain a present day metallicity 2-D map of the inner Galaxy and characterize the influence on the bar in the chemical evolution. We will also constrain the clusters IMFs, infer the presence of possible top-heavy recent star formation histories and test massive star formation channels: clusters vs isolation.

Thanks to forthcoming large-scale surveys, a tremendous number of strong lenses will be discovered in the coming years. The gain in accuracy on H0 from such a large population of lensed quasars is a key question for the future of time-delay cosmography. In such context, lensed systems will have to be modeled in an automated way, with models that are sufficiently generic to apply to every lens. I explore the biases that may arise from unaccounted-for azimuthal structures in mass models. The non-modeled twists in lensing galaxies are expected to bias the shear inference but not H0. Disregarded ellipticity gradients, boxyness and discyness may impact the cosmological inference on a lens-by-lens basis. Nevertheless, the diversity of azimuthal mass profile in lenses balances the bias at a population level and the H0 inference can thus benefits from such large surveys.

Classical pulsating stars such as Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables exhibit well-defined Period–Luminosity relations at near-infrared wavelengths. Despite their extensive use as stellar standard candles, the effects of metallicity on Period–Luminosity relations for these pulsating variables, and in turn, on possible biases in distance determinations, are not well understood. We present ongoing efforts in determining accurate and precise metallicity coefficients of Period–Luminosity-Metallicity relations for classical pulsators at near-infrared wavelengths. For Cepheids, it is crucial to obtain a homogeneous sample of photometric light curves and high-resolution spectra for a wide range of metallicities to empirically determine metallicity coefficient and reconcile differences with the predictions of the theoretical models. For RR Lyrae variables, using their host globular clusters covering a wide range of metallicities, we determined the most precise metallicity coefficient at near-infrared wavelengths, which is in excellent agreement with the predictions of the horizontal branch evolution and stellar pulsation models.

We study the motion of an asteroid being in retrograde 1/1 resonance with Jupiter (co-orbital motion). We consider the planar case (i=180°) and Jupiter is on a circular or elliptic orbit (e′ = 0.048). In the cirular model we compute families of symmetric periodic orbits and their stability type. In the elliptic model we have isolated periodic orbits which affect the orbital modes of motion as it is shown by the FLI dynamical maps.

We present a method to estimate distances to AGB stars, utilizing the rich infrared data sets available for these infrared-bright targets. The method is based on the assumption that stars with intrinsically similar properties (metallicity, initial mass, etc.) produce similar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and similar luminosities. We here discuss the results for AGB stars belonging to the BAaDE survey sample whose distances were calibrated using the template SEDs of stars with their VLBI parallaxes. As VLBI parallaxes are only known for a handful of sources, the resulting templates only cover a small subset of the BAaDE sample. Additional methods to derive suitable templates will therefore also be required. The work on expanding the template set is promising, although more fine tuning is still needed.

The confluence of data from the Murchison Widefield Array and an imaging pipeline tailored for spectroscopic snapshot images of the Sun at low radio frequencies have led to enormous improvements in the imaging quality of the Sun. These developments have lowered the detection thresholds by up to two orders of magnitude as compared to earlier studies, and have enabled the discovery of Weak Impulsive Narrowband Quiet Sun Emissions (WINQSEs). Their spatial distribution and various other properties are consistent with being the radio signatures of coronal nanoflares hypothesized by Parker (1988) to explain coronal heating in the quiet Sun emissions. We present the status of the multiple projects we have been pursuing to improve the detection and characterisation of WINQSEs, ranging from looking for them in multiple independent datasets using independent detection techniques to looking for their counter parts to estimate the energy associated with them and understanding their morphologies.

The Andromeda galaxy (M 31) has experienced a tumultuous merger history as evidenced by the many substructures present in its inner halo. We use planetary nebulae (PNe) as chemodynamic tracers to shed light on the recent merger history of M 31. We identify the older dynamically hotter thicker disc in M 31 and a distinct younger dynamically colder thin disc. The two discs are also chemically distinct with the PN chemodynamics implying their formation in a ‘wet’ major merger (mass ratio ∼ 1:5) ∼ 2.5–4.5 Gyr ago. From comparison of PN line-of-sight velocities in the inner halo substructures with predictions of a major-merger model in M 31, we find that the same merger event that formed the M 31 thick and thin disc is also responsible for forming these substructures. We thereby obtain constraints on the recent formation history of M 31 and the properties of its cannibalized satellite.

One of the largest sources of systematics in time-delay cosmography arises from Mass Sheet Transformation (MST). The degeneracy associated with this transformation is often broken by an assumed profile shape, such as a power-law. A hierarchical strategy has been developed which constrains the global profile shape on a population level, constrained collectively by the kinematics measurements of the lenses. This framework allows one to include non-time-delay lenses to provide constraints to the global profile, improving the H0 constraints. This work tests the hierarchical framework using analytical profiles, and additionally tests the capacity to combine two populations which come from the same profiles but probe different radii due to a change in source redshift. We find that the hierarchical framework is able to compensate for this effect, and the addition of non-time-delay lenses improves the H0 constraint, even though these lenses have different Einstein radii than their time-delay counterparts.

An extended catalog of long-periodic terms of the Sun tide-generating potential (STGP ver.2) is released. It contains 2.5 times of such terms than in the first version of the STGP catalog (Cionco et al. 2023). The analysis of the new data is done in order to re-examine the existence of tidal forces of ≈ 11.0-yr and ≈ 22.0-yr period able to excite the observed solar-activity cycles. In several recent studies, such tidal forcings are claimed to be a result of certain combinations of Venus, Earth and Jupiter mean motions with the multipliers (6, −10, 4) and (3, −5, 2), respectively. So, in this contribution, we specifically look for the periodic terms related to these combinations. As a result of these additional investigation we do not confirm any noticeable tidal forcing factors of ≈ 11.0-yr nor ≈ 22.0-yr period in the extended STGP spectrum either.

While the rotation curve of the inner Galactic disk is well determined, study of the outer rotation curve requires observational measurements of distances and proper motions of individual sources in the Outer Galaxy. We report astrometric observation for water maser sources in the Outer Galactic disk conducted with VERA, aiming to measure the Outer Rotation Curve. We have measured annual parallaxes and proper motions for these objects. Our result was consistent with recent other works based on astrometry and classical Cepheid observations. Epicyclic frequency seems to suggest that 2 and 4 spiral mode are dominant in the inner and outer Galaxy, respectively.

According to many historical records, 1P/Halley comet was reported to appear in 760 AD. In the same year in Indonesia, the Dinoyo inscription told us the story of the Kanjuruhan kingdom which held a Vedic ceremony to purify a new shrine and statue of Agastya to repel enemy forces (or dispel the epidemic). Many traditions believe that the appearance of a comet is a sign of war, plague/epidemic, death, etc. By applying this understanding to the archaeoastronomical framework, the hypothesis is proposed, that the king’s order which was written on the inscription shows the response to the 1P/Halley comet appearance in 760 AD. There are three ways to examine the hypothesis: by testing the chronological, geographical, and cultural aspects. Through some literature studies and the Stellarium Astronomy Software simulation, the initial research found that the chronological and geographical aspects support the hypothesis.

This work presents the study of multiphase relations of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds for short periods (log P < 1) and long periods (log P > 1). From the analysis, it has been found that the multiphase relations obtained using the models as well as observations are highly dynamic with pulsational phase. The multiphase relations for short and long periods are found to display contrasting behaviour for both LMC and SMC. It has been observed that the multiphase relations obtained using the models agree better with the observations in the PC plane in most phases in comparison to the PL plane. Multiphase relations obtained using the models display a clear distinction among different convection sets in most phases. Comparison of models and observations in the multiphase plane is one way to test the models with the observations and to constrain the theory of stellar pulsation.

Low metallicity (Z) massive stars are among the main feedback agents in the early Universe and in present-day blue dwarf galaxies. The nearby star-forming SMC galaxy offers conditions which resemble those at redshift z∼2 i.e. where modern galaxies formed and star formation peaked. Here we present the recent results about the nature of the eclipsing O-type binary in the SMC, AzV 476, to gain insights on the properties of massive stars and binaries at earlier cosmic epochs. We find that the primary has surprisingly low mass while being much brighter and hotter than the secondary. To place the measured stellar properties in the evolutionary context we modeled the system and confirm that AzV 476 is a post-interaction binary with the primary already being core helium (He) burning, while still having a hydrogen-rich (H-rich) envelope. These results constrain massive binary evolutionary scenarios and guide the searches of stripped stars in low-Z environments.

The exact mechanisms leading to chromospheric heating are still ill-defined. While the presence of magnetic elements is undoubtedly necessary, the details of the heating, and its spatio-temporal distribution remain poorly understood. We contribute to this topic by analyzing the behavior of hot chromospheric fibrils surrounding network and plage elements, identified via the broader Hα profiles observed along their length; the H-α spectral line width has been shown to correlate with the local chromospheric temperatures through comparison with the ALMA millimeter-continuum brightness temperature. We make use of loop tracing and analysis software to investigate characteristics of the chromospheric hot fibrils including their length, number density, and transverse spatial extension in an enhanced network region.

We have studied the validity of the historical Cygnus OB associations and have found that many do not show the kinematic coherence expected for true OB associations. We have revisited these groups by photometrically identifying thousands of OB stars across the region with an SED fitting process which combines photometry, astrometry, spectral and evolutionary models. We applied a flexible clustering method and identified seven kinematically-coherent new OB associations. We observe a distinct correlation between position and velocity for two sets of these associations that suggests an expansion pattern. Tracing the motion of the stars back in the past we find that the sets were at their closest around 7.9 and 8.5 Myr ago. We discuss whether this expansion is a natural by-product of the commonly observed size - velocity dispersion relation of molecular clouds, or requires feedback to initiate the dispersal.
