Quasi-Separatrix Layers (QSLs) are 3D geometrical objects that define narrow volumes across which magnetic field lines have strong, but finite, gradients of connectivity from one footpoint to another. QSLs extend the concept of separatrices, that are topological objects across which the connectivity is discontinuous. Based on analytical arguments, and on magnetic field extrapolations of the Sun's coronal force-free field above observed active regions, it has long since been conjectured that QSLs are favorable locations for current sheet (CS) formation, as well as for magnetic reconnection, and therefore are good predictors for the locations of magnetic energy release in flares and coronal heating. It is only up to recently that numerical MHD simulations and solar observations, as well as a laboratory experiment, have started to address the validity of these conjectures. When put all together, they suggest that QSL reconnection is involved in the displacement of EUV and SXR brightenings along chromospheric flare ribbons, that it is related with the heating of EUV coronal loops, and that the dissipation of QSL related CS may be the cause of coronal heating in initially homogeneous, braided and turbulent flux tubes, as well as in coronal arcades rooted in the slowly moving and numerous small-scale photospheric flux concentrations, both in active region faculae and in the quiet Sun. The apparent ubiquity of QSL-related CS in the Sun's corona, which will need to be quantified with new generation solar instruments, also suggests that QSLs play an important role in stellar's atmospheres, when their surface radial magnetic fields display complex patterns.

We briefly review ground-based (sub)millimeter dust continuum observations of the prestellar core mass function (CMF) and its connection to the stellar initial mass function (IMF). We also summarize the first results obtained on this topic from the Herschel Gould Belt survey, one of the largest key projects with the Herschel Space Observatory. Our early findings with Herschel confirm the existence of a close relationship between the CMF and the IMF. Furthermore, they suggest a scenario according to which the formation of prestellar cores occurs in two main steps: 1) complex networks of long, thin filaments form first, probably as a result of interstellar MHD turbulence; 2) the densest filaments then fragment and develop prestellar cores via gravitational instability.

Main-sequence massive stars possess convective cores that likely harbor strong dynamo action. To assess the role of core convection in building magnetic fields within these stars, we employ the 3-D anelastic spherical harmonic (ASH) code to model turbulent dynamics within a 10 M⊙ main-sequence (MS) B-type star rotating at 4 Ω⊙. We find that strong (900 kG) magnetic fields arise within the turbulence of the core and penetrate into the stably stratified radiative zone. These fields exhibit complex, time-dependent behavior including reversals in magnetic polarity and shifts between which hemisphere dominates the total magnetic energy.

There are now more than 35 stars with transiting planets for which the stellar obliquity—or more precisely its sky projection—has been measured, via the eponymous effect of Rossiter and McLaughlin. The history of these measurements is intriguing. For 8 years a case was gradually building that the orbits of hot Jupiters are always well-aligned with the rotation of their parent stars. Then in a sudden reversal, many misaligned systems were found, and it now seems that even retrograde systems are not uncommon. I review the measurement technique underlying these discoveries, the patterns that have emerged from the data, and the implications for theories of planet formation and migration.

Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is generally radio-quiet, but a small percent of them are radio-loud. The recent discovery by Fermi/LAT of high-energy γ-ray emission from 4 NLS1s proved the existence of relativistic jets in these systems. It is therefore important to study this new class of γ-ray emitting AGNs. Here we report preliminary results about the observations of the July 2010 γ-ray outburst of PMN J0948+0022, when the source flux exceeded for the first time 10−6 ph cm−2 s−1 (E > 100 MeV).

We derive the full chemical enrichment histories for 3800 early-type galaxies, including both star forming and passively evolving systems. For this purpose we have developed a method to simultaneously derive the element abundance ratios [C/Fe], [N/Fe], [Mg/Fe], [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe] for unresolved stellar populations. The method is based on up-to-date stellar population models with varying element abundance ratios. A novelty of the models is that they are flux-calibrated, removing the dependence on the Lick/IDS system. Trends with velocity dispersion are investigated where [Mg/Fe] and [C/Fe] are found to show very similar trends, while [N/Fe] show overall lower abundances ratios. [Ca/Fe] ratios are close to solar values over the velocity dispersion range covered. Tentative, due to large scatter, result for [Ti/Fe] implies that Ti follow the trends of Ca.

Galaxy-galaxy interactions and large scale galaxy bars are usually considered as the two main mechanisms for driving gas to the centres of galaxies. By using large samples of galaxy pairs and visually classified bars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we compare the relative efficiency of gas inflows from these two processes. We use two indicators of gas inflow: star formation rate (SFR) and gas phase metallicity, which are both measured relative to control samples. Whereas the metallicity of galaxy pairs is suppressed relative to its control sample of isolated galaxies, galaxies with bars are metal-rich for their stellar mass by 0.06 dex over all stellar masses. The SFRs of both the close galaxy pairs and the barred galaxies are enhanced by ~60%, but in the bars the enhancement is only seen at stellar masses M∗ > 1010 M⊙. Taking into account the relative frequency of bars and pairs, we estimate that at least three times more central star formation is triggered by bars than by interactions.

Jets from accreting black holes appear remarkably similar over eight orders of magnitude in black hole mass, with more massive black holes generally launching more powerful jets. For example, there is an observed correlation, termed the fundamental plane of black hole accretion, between black hole mass, radio luminosity, and X-ray luminosity. Here, we probe the high-mass tail (108–109M⊙) of the accreting black hole distribution with BL Lac objects. We build SEDs for hundreds of SDSS BL Lacs, and we use these SEDs to test the blazar sequence, a proposed anti-correlation between jet power and peak frequency. We then show our BL Lacs fit on the fundamental plane, supporting the non-linear scaling of jet radiation with black hole mass. The subset of BL Lacs considered here compose the largest sample yet used in the above types of studies, reducing potential selection effects and biases.

In order to study the properties of faint, moderate and bright flares, we simulate the conditions of the solar atmosphere using a radiative hydrodynamic model (Abbett & Hawley, 1999). A constant beam of non-thermal electrons is injected at the apex of a 1D coronal loop and heating from thermal soft X-ray emission is included. We compare the results with some observational data in Ly-α (using TRACE 1216 and 1600 Å data and estimating the “pure” Ly-α emission) and in Hα (data taken with a Multichannel Flare Spectrograph, at the Ondrejov Observatory).

We present Rigid Field Hydrodynamic simulations of the magnetosphere of σ Ori E. We find that the X-ray emission from the star's magnetically confined wind shocks is very sensitive to the assumed mass-loss rate. To compare the simulations against the measured X-ray emission, we first disentangle the star from its recently discovered late-type companion using Chandra HRC-I observations. This then allows us to place an upper limit on the mass-loss rate of the primary, which we find to be significantly smaller than previously imagined.

Our understanding of the structure and dynamics of stellar coronae has changed dramatically with the availability of surface maps of both star spots and also magnetic field vectors. Magnetic field extrapolations from these surface maps reveal surprising coronal structures for stars whose masses and hence internal structures and dynamo modes may be very different from that of the Sun. Crucial factors are the fraction of open magnetic flux (which determines the spin-down rate for the star as it ages) and the location and plasma density of closed-field regions, which determine the X-ray and radio emission properties. There has been recent progress in modelling stellar coronae, in particular the relative contributions of the field detected in the bright surface regions and the field that may be hidden in the dark star spots. For the Sun, the relationship between the field in the spots and the large scale field is well studied over the solar cycle. It appears, however, that other stars can show a very different relationship.

The equilibrium tide model in the weak friction approximation is used by the binary star and exoplanet communities to study the tidal evolution of short-period systems, however, each uses a slightly different approach which potentially leads to different conclusions about the timescales on which various processes occur. Here we present an overview of these two approaches, and show that for short-period planets the circularization timescales they predict differ by at most a factor of a few. A discussion of the timescales for orbital decay, spin-orbit synchronization and spin-orbit alignment is also presented.

Commission 33 held its business session in the afternoon of Friday 7 August 2009. The president briefly described developments during the previous months. A short discussion followed about the activities of the Commission and whether it should play a more active role in view of the many on-going surveys relevant to the subject of the Galaxy.

We present simulations of stable isothermal clouds exposed to ionizing radiation from a discrete external source, and identify the conditions that lead to Radiatively Driven Implosion and Star Formation. We use the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code SEREN (Hubber et al. 2010) and the HEALPix-based photoionization algorithm described in Bisbas et al. (2009). We find that the incident ionizing flux is the critical parameter determining the evolution; high fluxes disperse the cloud, whereas low fluxes trigger star formation. We find a clear connection between the intensity of the incident flux and the parameters of star formation.

Internal gravity waves are excited at the interface of convection and radiation zones of a solar-type star, by the tidal forcing of a short-period planet. The fate of these waves as they approach the centre of the star depends on their amplitude. We discuss the results of numerical simulations of these waves approaching the centre of a star, and the resulting evolution of the spin of the central regions of the star and the orbit of the planet. If the waves break, we find efficient tidal dissipation, which is not present if the waves perfectly reflect from the centre. This highlights an important amplitude dependence of the (stellar) tidal quality factor Q′, which has implications for the survival of planets on short-period orbits around solar-type stars, with radiative cores.

The upper main sequence magnetic chemically peculiar (Ap) stars exhibit a non-uniform distribution of chemical elements across their surfaces and with height in their atmospheres. These inhomogeneities, responsible for the conspicuous photometric and spectroscopic variation of Ap stars, are believed to be produced by atomic diffusion operating in the stellar atmospheres stabilized by multi-kG magnetic fields. Here I present an overview of the current state-of-the-art in understanding Ap-star spots and their relation to magnetic fields. In particular, I highlight recent 3-D chemical spot structure studies and summarize magnetic field mapping results based on the inversion of the full Stokes vector spectropolarimetric observations. I also discuss a puzzling new type of spotted stars, HgMn stars, in which the formation and evolution of heavy element spots is driven by a poorly understood mechanism, apparently unrelated to magnetic fields.

We recently carried out a spectropolarimetric study of a sample of massive O-type stars and pulsating β Cephei stars using the SOFIN echelle spectrograph at the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope and the low-resolution FORS 2 spectrograph at the VLT in spectropolarimetric mode. The sample consists of massive stars already detected as magnetic in the course of our previous low-resolution polarimetric observations with FORS 1 and a few O-type stars with magnetic field detections reported in the literature.

We discuss inverse problem of detection turbulence magnetic field helical properties using radio survey observations statistics. In this paper, we present principal solution which connects magnetic helicity and correlation between Faraday rotation measure and polarization degree of radio synchrotron emission. The effect of depolarization plays the main role in this problem and allows to detect magnetic helicity for certain frequency range of observable radio emission. We show that the proposed method is mainly sensitive to a large-scale magnetic field component.

We consider the radiation pressure instability operating on short timescales (103 - 106 years) in the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole as the origin of the intermittent activity of radio sources. We test whether this instability can be responsible for short ages (<104 years) of Compact Steep Spectrum sources measured by hot spots propagation velocities in VLBI observations and statistical overabundance of Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum sources. The implied timescales are consistent with the observed ages of the sources. We aslo discuss possible implications of the intermittent activity on the complex morphology of radio sources, such as the quasar 1045+352, dominated by a knotty jet showing several bends. It is possible that we are whitnessing an ongoing jet precession in this source due to internal instabilities within the jet flow.

The business session for Commission 37 was held on 11 August 2009 at the IAU General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting was attended by about a dozen members of our Comission, including President Elmegreen, VP Carraro and several committee members. We introduced ourselves and then went through a powerpoint presentation first prepared by outgoing President Hatzidimitriou and revised by incoming President Elmegreen. The contents of the powerpoint presentation are given in this summary.
