Most short period transiting exoplanets have circular orbits, as expected from an estimation of the circularisation timescale using classical tidal theory. Interestingly, a small number of short period transiting exoplanets seem to have orbits with a small eccentricity. Such systems are valuable as they may indicate that some key physics is missing from formation and evolution models. We have analysed the results of a campaign of radial velocity measurements of known transiting planets with the SOPHIE and HARPS spectrographs using Bayesian methods and obtained new constraints on the orbital elements of 12 known transiting exoplanets. We also reanalysed the radial velocity data for another 42 transiting systems and show that some of the eccentric orbits reported in the Literature are compatible with a circular orbit. As a result, we show that the systems with circular and eccentric orbits are clearly separated on a plot of the planetary mass versus orbital period. We also show that planets following the trend where heavier hot Jupiters have shorter orbital periods (the “mass-period relation” of hot Jupiters), also tend to have circular orbits, with no confirmed exception to this rule so far.

The feedback form pre-main sequence and young stars influences their vicinity. The stars are formed in clusters, which implies that the winds of individual stars collide with each other. Inside of a star cluster, winds thermalize a fraction of their kinetic energy, forming a very hot medium able to escape from the cluster in the form of a large-scale wind. Outside of the cluster, the cluster wind forms a shock front as it interacts with the ambient medium which is accreted onto the expanding shell. A variety of instabilities may develop in such shells, and in some cases they fragment, triggering second generation of star formation. However, if the cluster surpasses a certain mass (depending on the radius and other parameters) the hot medium starts to be thermally unstable even inside of the cluster, forming dense warm clumps. The formation of next generations of stars may start if the clumps are big enough to self-shield against stellar radiation creating cold dense cores.

We have studied the star-forming and AGN activity of massive galaxies in the redshift range z = 0.4−2, which are detected in a deep survey field using the AKARI and Subaru telescopes toward the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). The multi-wavelength survey allows us to select Mid-InfraRed (MIR) bright populations as Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (LIRGs) with L(IR) ≃ 1010–11 L⊙, which can be also sub-classified into Balmer Break Galaxies (BBGs) and Infra-Red (IR) Bump Galaxies (IRBGs). AKARI/IRC multiband photometry can distinguish their star-forming/AGN activity for LIRGs with/without the Polycyclic-Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission bands at 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 μm, and estimate the Star Formation Rate (SFR) from their total emitting InfraRed (IR) luminosities for star-formings and the emissions from dusty torus for AGNs. The results are summarised as below: 1) The rest-frame 7.7 μm luminosity is still a good tracer of the total IR (tIR) luminosity, as the PAH emission dominates for star-forming galaxies even up to z ≃ 2, 2) Rest-frame 5μm Luminosities may trace emissions from dusty torus of AGN in the LIRGs, 3) SFR of Starburst-AGN LIRGs (s/a-LIRGs) tends to quench at z < 0.8 more rapidly than that of Starburst dominated LIRGs (sb-LIRGs), 4) Intrinsic Stellar populations in the s/a-LIRGs show redder colours than those in the sb-LIRGs. These results suggest that Super Massive Black Holes (SMBH) could already have grown to ≃ 3 × 108M⊙ in the agn-LIRGs, with ≃ 1011L⊙ at z > 1.2, and the growth of SMBH tends to follow the star-forming activities around z = 1–2.

3D high resolution simulations for the convective zone of a 4Myr old 0.7 M⊙ pre-main sequence star in gravitational contraction are carried out with different radial density contrast using the pseudo spectral ASH code (Brun et al. 2004). We extract giant cells signal from the complex surface convective patterns by using a wavelet analysis. We then characterize them by estimating their lifetime and rotation rate according to the density contrast.

I review recent numerical and analytical work on the feedback from both low- and high-mass cluster stars into their gaseous environment. The main conclusions are that i) outflow driving appears capable of maintaing the turbulence in parsec-sized clumps and retarding their collapse from the free-fall rate, although there exist regions within molecular clouds, and even some examples of whole clouds, which are not actively forming stars, yet are just as turbulent, so that a more universal turbulence-driving mechanism is needed; ii) outflow-driven turbulence exhibits specific spectral features that can be tested observationally; iii) feedback plays an important role in reducing the SFR; iv) nevertheless, numerical simulations suggest feedback cannot completely prevent a net contracting motion of clouds and clumps. Therefore, an appealing source for driving the turbulence everywhere in GMCs is the accretion from the environment, at all scales. In this case, feedback's most important role may be to prevent a fraction of the gas nearest to newly formed stars from actually reaching them, thus reducing the SFE.

Magnetic helicity has received considerable attention in the area of fluid dynamics. Recently, this quantity is attracting the interest of solar physicists and much research has been carried out related to magnetic helicity generation and transport through different solar layers, starting from the interior and the convection zone, towards the photosphere, the corona and finally into the heliosphere. Taking into account the global importance of supergranular cells in convection theories, we study the motion of magnetic features into such a geometrical element simplified as hexagonal cell and we analyse the results in terms of the accumulated magnetic helicity. We compute the emergence of a bipole inside the hexagonal cell and its motion from the centre of the cell towards its sides and its vertices, where the magnetic elements are considered to be sinking down. Multiple bipoles are also considered and phenomena such as cancellation, coalescence and fragmentation are also investigated. We find that the most important process for the accumulation of magnetic helicity is the shear motion between the polarities. The magnetic helicity accumulation changes its trend when one polarity reaches the side of the hexagon, and later the vertex. It has zero value when there is no shear motion inside the hexagonal cell, and it is constant when there is no shear between the two polarities during their motion along the cell sides.

Thanks to the combination of transit photometry and radial velocity doppler measurements, we are now able to constrain theoretical models of the structure and evolution of objects in the whole mass range between icy giants and stars, including the giant planet/brown dwarf overlapping mass regime (Leconte et al. 2009). In the giant planet mass range, the significant fraction of planets showing a larger radius than predicted by the models suggests that a missing physical mechanism which is either injecting energy in the deep convective zone or reducing the net outward thermal flux is taking place in these objects. Several possibilities have been suggested for such a mechanism:

• • downward transport of kinetic energy originating from strong winds generated at the planet's surface (Showman & Guillot 2002),

• • enhanced opacity sources in hot-Jupiter atmospheres (Burrows et al. 2007),

• • ohmic dissipation in the ionized atmosphere (Batygin & Stevenson 2010),

• • (inefficient) layered or oscillatory convection in the planet's interior (Chabrier & Baraffe 2007),

• • Tidal heating due to circularization of the orbit, as originally suggested by Bodenheimer, Lin & Mardling (2001).

The statistical properties of magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes of OB stars were investigated. The mean magnetic fluxes of massive OB stars appear to be 3 order larger than those for neutron stars.

In this work we propose the Bardeen-Petterson effect as the precession mechanism of the jet precession in NGC 1275. To check if this is true we have estimated the angular momentum ratio and the aligment timescale predict by the theory and compared with the numerical results presented in the literature. We were able to explain the precession period assuming an accretion disk with column surface density in the form of a power law with exponent 0.6 < s < 0.7 and a black hole rotation with a spin of 0.23 < a∗<0.4.

A dynamo is a process by which fluid motions sustain magnetic fields against dissipative effects. Dynamos occur naturally in many astrophysical systems. Theoretically, we have a much more robust understanding of the generation and maintenance of magnetic fields at the scale of the fluid motions or smaller, than that of magnetic fields at scales much larger than the local velocity. Here, via numerical simulations, we examine one example of an “essentially nonlinear” dynamo mechanism that successfully maintains magnetic field at the largest available scale (the system scale) without cascade to the resistive scale. In particular, we examine whether this new type of dynamo at the system scale is still effective in the presence of other smaller-scale dynamics (turbulence).

The exact contribution of the stellar disk to the overall kinematics of a galaxy remains in most studies a free parameter of the mass models. With the help of chemospectrophotometric evolution models, it is now possible to have a coherent picture of the stellar population of a galaxy including its mass-to-luminosity ratio at every radius spanning a wide range of observable wavelengths. We will focus on discussing the consistency of the mass thus inferred in photometric bands ranging from the FUV to the NIR for individual galaxies and compare this to the maximum-disc hypothesis.

Magnetic buoyancy is believed to drive the transport of magnetic flux tubes from the convection zone to the surface of the Sun. The magnetic fields form twisted loop-like structures in the solar atmosphere. In this paper we use helical forcing to produce a large-scale dynamo-generated magnetic field, which rises even without magnetic buoyancy. A two layer system is used as computational domain where the upper part represents the solar atmosphere. Here, the evolution of the magnetic field is solved with the stress–and–relax method. Below this region a magnetic field is produced by a helical forcing function in the momentum equation, which leads to dynamo action. We find twisted magnetic fields emerging frequently to the outer layer, forming arch-like structures. In addition, recurrent plasmoid ejections can be found by looking at space–time diagrams of the magnetic field. Recent simulations in spherical coordinates show similar results.

Transits give us the mass, radius, and orbital properties of the planet, all of which inform dynamical theories. Two properties of the hot Jupiters suggest they had a dramatic origin via tidal damping from high eccentricity. First, the tidally circularized planets (in the 1-4 day pile-up) lie along a relation or boundary in the mass-period plane. This observation may implicate a tidal damping process regulated by planetary radius inflation and Roche lobe overflow, early in the planets' lives. Second, the host stars of many planets have spins misaligned from the planets' orbits. This observation was not expected a priori from the conventional disk migration theory, and it was a boon for the alternative theories of planet-planet scattering and Kozai cycles, accompanied by tidal friction, which predicted it. Now we are faced with a curious observation that the misalignment angle depends on the stellar temperature. It may mean that the tide raised on the stars realigns them, the final result being the tidal consumption of hot Jupiters.

A Butterfly Diagram showing the spotted area distribution is presented. The diagram reveals that most of the spotted area is concentrated in few, small portions (“knots”) of the butterfly wings. A knot may appear at either lower or higher latitudes than previous ones, in a seemingly random way; accordingly, the spot mean latitude abruptly drifts equatorward or even poleward at any knot activation, in spite of any smoothing procedure. The description, assuming that spots scatter around the “spot mean latitude” steadily drifting equatorward, is questioned. In a relevant number of cases, knots appear to be arranged in two roughly parallel, oblique streams, the “spot mean latitude” being located in the underspotted band lying between these streams.

Nuclear regions of galaxies generally host a mixture of components with different exitation, composition, and kinematics. Derivation of emission line ratios and kinematics could then be misleading, if due correction is not made for the limited spatial and spectral resolutions of the observations. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, with application to a long slit spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1358, how line intensities and velocities, together with modelling and knowledge of the point spread function, may be used to resolve the differing structures. In the situation outlined, the observed kinematics differs for different spectral lines. From the observed intensity and velocity distributions of a number of spectral lines and with some reasonable assumptions to diminish the number of free parameters, the true line ratios and velocity structures may be deduced. A preliminary solution for the nuclear structure of NGC 1358 is obtained, involving a nuclear point source and an emerging outflow of high excitation with a post shock cloud, as well as a nuclear emission line disk rotating in the potential of a stellar bulge and expressing a radial exitation gradient. The method results in a likely scenario for the nuclear structure of NGC 1358. For definitive results an extrapolation of the method to two dimensions combined with the use of integral field spectroscopy will generally be necessary.

We report the results of a search for line profile variability (LPV) in the spectra of OB stars. The wavelets were used for looking for the irregular LPV in spectra of program stars. We connect the appearance of irregular details in the LPV with the formation and dissipation of the small-scale substructures (clumps) in the wind.

We performed mapping observations of the Fornax A west lobe with Suzaku in order to measure X-ray brightness distribution. Thanks to the low and stable background of Suzaku, we succeeded in detecting the faint diffuse X-ray emission from the west lobe. Performing careful corrections to the obtained images, we finally measured the X-ray brightness profile extending over the lobe. By comparing the X-ray and radio profiles, the magnetic field found to be fairly constant at ~1 μG over the lobe, while the electron energy distribution is suggested to concentrate on the lobe center.

Most stars seem to form in clusters, but the vast majority of these clusters do not seem to survive much beyond their embedded phase. The most favoured mechanism for the early destruction of star clusters is the effect of the removal of residual gas by feedback which dramatically changes the cluster potential. The effects of feedback depend on the ratio of the masses of stars and gas, and the velocity dispersion of the stars at the onset of gas removal. As gas removal is delayed by a few Myr from star formation these crucial parameters can change significantly from their initial values. In particular, in dynamically cool and clumpy clusters, the stars will collapse to a far denser state and if they decouple from the gas then gas removal may be far less destructive than previously thought. This might well help explain the survival of very massive clusters, such as globular clusters, without the need for extremely high star formation efficiencies or initial masses far greater than their current masses.

M dwarfs produce explosive flare emission in the near-UV and optical continuum, and the mechanism responsible for this phenomenon is not well-understood. We present a near-UV/optical flare spectrum from the rise phase of a secondary flare, which occurred during the decay of a much larger flare. The newly formed flare emission resembles the spectrum of an early-type star, with the Balmer lines and continuum in absorption. We model this observation phenomenologically as a temperature bump (hot spot) near the photosphere of the M dwarf. The amount of heating implied by our model (ΔTphot ~ 16,000 K) is far more than predicted by chromospheric backwarming in current 1D RHD flare models (ΔTphot ~ 1200 K).
