The spatio-temporal dynamics of the solar magnetic field has been investigated by using NSO/Kitt Peak synoptic magnetic maps covering ~28 yr. For each heliographic latitude the field has been analyzed through the Empirical Mode Decomposition, in order to investigate the time evolution of the various characteristic oscillating frequencies. Preliminary results are discussed.

We investigate the tidal interactions between hot Jupiter extra-solar planets and their host stars in an effort to characterise the effects of such interactions on stellar rotation. We study the WASP-18 and WASP-19 systems, showing that in both cases tidal interactions cause the eventual spiral in of the the planet towards the Roche limit. We find that for both systems this process will cause significant spin up of the host star, independent of the precise value for the tidal quality factors. By fitting tidal evolution models to observed parameters, we are able to determine that WASP-19 b is currently spiralling in, and that it has a very short remaining lifetime ~ 3 Myr.

The meeting was unfortunately scheduled for the afternoon of the last day of the General Assembly, so attendance was low. Nevertheless, we had some good discussions.

Temperature contrasts and magnetic field strengths of sunspot umbrae broadly follow the thermal-magnetic relationship obtained from magnetohydrostatic equilibrium. Using a compilation of recent observations, especially in molecular bands, of temperature contrasts of starspots in cool stars, and a grid of Kurucz stellar model atmospheres constructed to cover layers of sub-surface convection zone, we examine how the above relationship scales with effective temperature (Teff), surface gravity g and the associated changes in opacity of stellar photospheric gas. We calculate expected field strengths in starpots and find that a given relative reduction in temperatures (or the same darkness contrasts) yield increasing field strengths against decreasing Teff due to a combination of pressure and opacity variations against Teff.

The B0.2 V magnetic star τ Sco stands out from the larger population of massive magnetic OB stars due to its remarkable, superionized wind, apparently related to its peculiar magnetic field – a field which is far more complex than the mostly-dipolar fields usually observed in magnetic OB stars. τ Sco is therefore a puzzling outlier in the larger picture of stellar magnetism – a star that still defies interpretation in terms of a physically coherent model.

Recently, two early B-type stars were discovered as τ Sco analogues, identified by the striking similarity of their UV spectra to that of τ Sco, which was – until now – unique among OB stars. We present the recent detection of their magnetic fields by the MiMeS collaboration, reinforcing the connection between the presence of a magnetic field and a superionized wind. We will also present ongoing observational efforts undertaken to establish the precise magnetic topology, in order to provide additional constrains for existing models attempting to reproduce the unique wind structure of τ Sco-like stars.

In the interstellar medium the turbulence is believed to be forced mostly through supernova explosions. In a first approximation these flows can be written as a gradient of a potential being thus devoid of vorticity. There are several mechanisms that could lead to vorticity generation, like viscosity and baroclinic terms, rotation, shear and magnetic fields, but it is not clear how effective they are, neither is it clear whether the vorticity is essential in determining the turbulent diffusion acting in the ISM. Here we present a study of the role of rotation, shear and baroclinicity in the generation of vorticity in the ISM.

We use numerical simulations to investigate how the expansion of an HII region is affected by an ambient magnetic field. First we consider the test problem of expansion in a uniform medium with a unidirectional magnetic field. We then describe the expansion of an HII region in a turbulent medium, taking as our initial conditions the results of and MHD turbulence simulation. We find that although in the uniform medium case the magnetic field does produce interesting effects over long length and timescales, in the turbulent medium case the main effect of the magnetic field is to reduce the efficiency of fragmentation of the molecular gas.

We present here the results of an observational photo-polarimetry campaign at optical wavelengths of the blazar PG 1553+113, which was recently detected at very high energies (>100 GeV) by the H.E.S.S and MAGIC γ-ray experiments.

Our high-temporal resolution data show significant variations in the linear polarization percentage and position angle at inter-night time-scales, while at shorter (intra-night) time-scales both parameters varied less significantly, if at all. Simultaneous differential photometry (at the B and R bands) shows no significant variability in the total optical flux.

During the next decade the IAU intends to mobilize talented astronomers, engineers and teachers around the world, in the service of developing countries. I shall review the content of the IAU Strategic Plan 2010 - 2020 “Astronomy for the Developing World” and give you an update on its implementation. Astronomy is a unique tool for stimulating capacity building because it combines cutting-edge technology with fundamental science and has deep cultural roots. The plan envisages a substantial increase in IAU education and development activities during the next decade. These activities will be bottom-up, with a strong regional influence. An integrated approach tailored to the conditions and needs of each country will involve a mix of education at primary, secondary and tertiary levels and public outreach. As a crucial component of the strategy, the IAU together with the South African National Research Foundation will set up a small office to coordinate and plan the various global activities at the SAAO in Cape Town.

Planet-disk interaction predicts a change in the orbital elements of an embedded planet. Through linear and fully hydrodynamical studies it has been found that migration is typically directed inwards. Hence, this migration process gives natural explanation for the presence of the ’hot’ planets orbiting close to the parent star, and it plays a mayor role in explaining the formation of resonant planetary systems.

However, standard migration models for locally isothermal disks indicate a too rapid inward migration for small mass planets, and a large number of massive planets are found very far away from the star. Recent studies, including more complete disk physics, have opened up new paths to slow down or even reverse migration. The new findings on migration are discussed and connected to the observational properties of planetary systems.

A brief analysis is given of the need for more trained people in science and technology versus the declined interest in studying sciences. In highlighting some of the aspects of research in astronomy, arguments are presented why astronomy education is by far the most attractive way to stimulate young people to study sciences later on. The availability of vast sets of scientific data with software instruments for instructional use is emphasized. Attention is also given to the changing world of young people, and to the needs and problems in Africa. Finally, some conclusions are given of how astronomy can contribute to transform education in sciences into an education for young people that attracts them towards science & technology.

Photospheric stellar activity (i.e. dark spots or bright plages) might be an important source of noise and confusion in the radial-velocity (RV) measurements. Radial-velocimetry planet search surveys as well as follow-up of photometric transit surveys require a deeper understanding and characterization of the effects of stellar activities to disentangle it from planetary signals.

We simulate dark spots on a rotating stellar photosphere. The variations of the RV are characterized and analyzed according to the stellar inclination, the latitude and the number of spots. The Lomb-Scargle periodograms of the RV variations induced by activity present power at the rotational period Prot of the star and its two-first harmonics Prot/2 and Prot/3. Three adjusted sinusoids fixed at the fundamental period and its two-first harmonics allow to remove about 90% of the RV jitter amplitude. We apply and validate our approach on four known active planet-host stars: HD 189733, GJ 674, CoRoT-7 and ι Hor. We succeed in fitting simultaneously activity and planetary signals on GJ674 and CoRoT-7. We excluded short-period low-mass exoplanets around ι Hor. Our approach is efficient to disentangle reflex-motion due to a planetary companion and stellar-activity induced-RV variations provided that 1) the planetary orbital period is not close to that of the stellar rotation or one of its two-first harmonics, 2) the rotational period of the star is accurately known, 3) the data cover more than one stellar rotational period.

In some massive stars, magnetic fields are thought to confine the outflowing radiatively-driven wind. Although theoretical models and MHD simulations are able to illustrate the dynamics of such a magnetized wind, the impact of this wind-field interaction on the observable properties of a magnetic star - X-ray emission, photometric and spectral variability - is still unclear. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between magnetism, stellar winds and X-ray emission of OB stars, by providing empirical observations and confronting theory. In conjunction with the COUP survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster, we carried out spectropolarimatric ESPaDOnS observations to determine the magnetic properties of massive OB stars of this cluster.

The quasar J1819+3845 has shown extreme variability with flux density variations in the radio regime up to 600% in less than one hour. In case of intrinsic high varibility, the short time scale sets a limit on the size of the emitting region and allows to estimate its brightness temperature. This would exceed 1021 K in the case of J1819+3845. Even an high relativistic jet beamed and doppler boosted in our line of sight cannot explain such an extreme violation of the Inverse Compton limit (1012 K). The variability of this source has been proven to be due to scattering in the Interstellar medium by a number of different experiments. Such an explanation requires a closeby scattering screen (few parsecs) and it results in a brightness temperature of about 1014 K. Many observing campaigns have been carried on to map the innermost jet structures of J1819+3845. Here we present the results of a number of VLBI observations, including space VLBI, to search for the missing jet in this puzzling source.

HD75445 was recently announced by Kochukhov et al. (2009) to be a low-amplitude roAp star, based on spectroscopic measurements. We present putative pulsation frequencies of HD75445 determined from 22 hours of Johnson B photometry obtained in 2008, 2009 and 2010. We present the first photometric periodicities detected in this star. We make a marginal detection of one of Kochukhov et al. (2009)'s spectroscopic periods, along with a range of confidently detected periodicities covering the low-frequency end of the roAp instability spectrum and the high-frequency end of the Delta Scuti instability spectrum.

Commission 54 held its business meeting on 11 August 2009 at “Botequim” at Rua Visconde de Caravelas 184/186, Humaitá, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Individual members in attendance reported on activities of relevance to C54.

Feedback from photoionisation may dominate on parsec scales in massive star-forming regions. Such feedback may inhibit or enhance the star formation efficiency and sustain or even drive turbulence in the parent molecular cloud. Photoionisation feedback may also provide a mechanism for the rapid expulsion of gas from young clusters' potentials, often invoked as the main cause of ‘infant mortality’. There is currently no agreement, however, with regards to the efficiency of this process and how environment may affect the direction (positive or negative) in which it proceeds. The study of the photoionisation process as part of hydrodynamical simulations is key to understanding these issues, however, due to the computational demand of the problem, crude approximations for the radiation transfer are often employed.

We will briefly review some of the most commonly used approximations and discuss their major drawbacks. We will then present the results of detailed tests carried out using the detailed photoionisation code mocassin and the SPH+ionisation code iVINE code, aimed at understanding the error introduced by the simplified photoionisation algorithms. This is particularly relevant as a number of new codes have recently been developed along those lines.

We will finally propose a new approach that should allow to efficiently and self-consistently treat the photoionisation problem for complex radiation and density fields.

It is pointed out that the standard model for pulsar electrodynamics is based on a false premise, related to neglecting the displacement current, and the associated need for current screening. Wave dispersion in the standard model is reviewed, and its relation to the interpretation of pulsar radio emission and its polarization is discussed. Inclusion of the displacement current results in large-amplitude oscillations; some of the implications of these oscillations on the interpretation of the radio emission are discussed.

We present numerical results concerning the behavior of the density and the velocity power spectrum in turbulent thermally bistable flows for different Mach numbers.

The original sunspot observations by Samuel Heinrich Schwabe of 1825–1867 were digitized and a first subset of spots was measured. In this initial project, we determined more than 14 000 sunspot positions and areas comprising about 11% of the total amount of spots available from that period. The resulting butterfly diagram has a typical appearance, but with evident north-south asymmetries.
