We prove a vanishing theorem for the twisted de Rham cohomology of a compact manifold.

We study bounds on nilpotence in H*(BG), the mod p cohomology of the classifying space of a compact Lie group G. Part of this is a report of our previous work on this problem, updated to reflect the consequences of Peter Symonds's recent verification of Dave Benson's Regularity Conjecture. New results are given for finite p-groups, leading to good bounds on nilpotence in H*(BP) determined by the subgroup structure of the p-group P.

We show that Brin's generalizations 2V and 3V of the Thompson–Higman group V are of type FP∞. Our methods also give a new proof that both groups are finitely presented.

We obtain a sharp bound for p-elementary subgroups in the Cremona group Cr2(k) over an arbitrary perfect field k.

Let A be a unital C*-algebra with the canonical (H) C*-bundle over the maximal ideal space of the centre of A, and let E(A) be the set of all elementary operators on A. We consider derivations on A which lie in the completely bounded norm closure of E(A), and show that such derivations are necessarily inner in the case when each fibre of is a prime C*-algebra. We also consider separable C*-algebras A for which is an (F) bundle. For these C*-algebras we show that the following conditions are equivalent: E(A) is closed in the operator norm; A as a Banach module over its centre is topologically finitely generated; fibres of have uniformly finite dimensions, and each restriction bundle of over a set where its fibres are of constant dimension is of finite type as a vector bundle.

We consider a nonlinear periodic problem driven by the scalar p-Laplacian and with a reaction term which exhibits a (p – 1)-superlinear growth near ±∞ but need not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Combining critical point theory with Morse theory we prove an existence theorem. Then, using variational methods together with truncation techniques, we prove a multiplicity theorem establishing the existence of at least five non-trivial solutions, with precise sign information for all of them (two positive solutions, two negative solutions and a nodal (sign changing) solution).

Let Un(q) denote the upper triangular group of degree n over the finite field with q elements. It is known that irreducible constituents of supercharacters partition the set of all irreducible characters Irr(Un(q)). In this paper we present a correspondence between supercharacters and pattern subgroups of the form Uk(q) ∩ wUk(q), where w is a monomial matrix in GLk(q) for some k < n.

We present, given an odd integer d, a decomposition of the multiset of bar lengths of a bar partition λ as the union of two multisets, one consisting of the bar lengths in its d-core partition cd(λ) and the other consisting of modified bar lengths in its d-quotient partition. In particular, we obtain that the multiset of bar lengths in cd(λ) is a sub-multiset of the multiset of bar lengths in λ. Also, we obtain a relative bar formula for the degrees of spin characters of the Schur extensions of . The proof involves a recent similar result for partitions, proved by Bessenrodt and the authors.

It follows from methods of B. Steinberg, extended to inverse categories, that finite inverse category algebras are isomorphic to their associated groupoid algebras; in particular, they are symmetric algebras with canonical symmetrizing forms.We deduce the existence of transfer maps in cohomology and Hochschild cohomology from certain inverse subcategories. This is in part motivated by the observation that, for certain categories , being a Mackey functor on is equivalent to being extendible to a suitable inverse category containing . We further show that extensions of inverse categories by abelian groups are again inverse categories.

We prove sufficient and necessary conditions for compactness of the Sobolev embeddings of Besov and Triebel–Lizorkin spaces defined on bounded and unbounded uniformly E-porous domains. The asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding entropy numbers is calculated. Some applications to the spectral properties of elliptic operators are described.

We establish a defect relation for algebraically non-degenerate meromorphic maps over generalized p-parabolic manifolds that intersect hypersurfaces in smooth projective algebraic varieties, extending certain results of H. Cartan, L. Ahlfors, W. Stoll, M. Ru, P. M. Wong and Philip P. W. Wong and others.

Bob Oliver conjectures that if p is an odd prime and S is a finite p-group, then the Oliver subgroup contains the Thompson subgroup Je(S). A positive resolution of this conjecture would give the existence and uniqueness of centric linking systems for fusion systems at odd primes. Using the ideas and work of Glauberman, we prove that if p ≥ 5, G is a finite p-group, and V is an elementary abelian p-group which is an F-module for G, then there exists a quadratic offender which is 2-subnormal (normal in its normal closure) in G. We apply this to show that Oliver's Conjecture holds provided that the quotient has class at most log2(p − 2) + 1, or p ≥ 5 and G is equal to its own Baumann subgroup.

Let A and M be closed linear operators defined on a complex Banach space X and let a ∈ L1(ℝ+) be a scalar kernel. We use operator-valued Fourier multipliers techniques to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions to the equation

with initial condition Mu(0) = Mu(2π), solely in terms of spectral properties of the data. Our results are obtained in the scales of periodic Besov, Triebel–Lizorkin and Lebesgue vector-valued function spaces.

Results of Fowler and Sims show that every k-graph is completely determined by its k-coloured skeleton and collection of commuting squares. Here we give an explicit description of the k-graph associated with a given skeleton and collection of squares and show that two k-graphs are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism of their skeletons which preserves commuting squares. We use this to prove directly that each k-graph Λ is isomorphic to the quotient of the path category of its skeleton by the equivalence relation determined by the commuting squares, and show that this extends to a homeomorphism of infinite-path spaces when the k-graph is row finite with no sources. We conclude with a short direct proof of the characterization, originally due to Robertson and Sims, of simplicity of the C*-algebra of a row-finite k-graph with no sources.

After summarizing from previous papers the definitions of the concepts associated with nets, i.e. triples of 6-transpositions in the Monster up to braiding, we give some results.

We prove that if a finite group G acts smoothly on a manifold M such that all the isotropy subgroups are abelian groups with rank ≤ k, then G acts freely and smoothly on M × × … × for some positive integers n1, …, nk. We construct these actions using a recursive method, introduced in an earlier paper, that involves abstract fusion systems on finite groups. As another application of this method, we prove that every finite solvable group acts freely and smoothly on some product of spheres, with trivial action on homology.

Let Ω be a finite set and let G be a permutation group acting on it. A subset H of G is called t-intersecting if any two elements in H agree on at least t points. Let SDn and SBn be the classical Coxeter group of type Dn and type Bn, respectively. We show that the maximum-sized (2t)-intersecting families in SDn and SBn are precisely cosets of stabilizers of t points in [n] ≔ {1, 2, …, n}, provided n is sufficiently large depending on t.

In this paper we study Lp−Lr estimates of both the extension operator and the averaging operator associated with the algebraic variety S = {x ∈ : Q(x) = 0}, where Q(x) is a non-degenerate quadratic form over the finite field with q elements. We show that the Fourier decay estimate on S is good enough to establish the sharp averaging estimates in odd dimensions. In addition, the Fourier decay estimate enables us to simply extend the sharp L2−L4 conical extension result in , due to Mockenhaupt and Tao, to the L2−L2(d+1)/(d−1) estimate in all odd dimensions d ≥ 3. We also establish a sharp estimate of the mapping properties of the average operators in the case when the variety S in even dimensions d ≥ 4 contains a d/2-dimensional subspace.

We find conditions which imply that a saturated fusion system over a product of 2-groups splits as a product of fusion systems over the factors.

We prove the classification of the real vector subspaces of a quaternionic vector space by using a covariant functor which associates, to any pair formed of a quaternionic vector space and a real subspace, a coherent sheaf over the sphere.
