This year marks a major materials milestone in the makeup of silicon-based field-effect transistors: in the microprocessors produced by leading manufacturers, the SiO2 gate dielectric is being replaced by a hafnium-based dielectric. The incredible electronic properties of the SiO2/silicon interface are the reason that silicon has dominated the semiconductor industry and helped it grow to over $250 billion in annual sales, as reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), San Jose, CA. The shrinkage of transistor dimensions (Moore's law) has led to tremendous improvements in circuit speed and computer performance. At the same time, however, it has also led to exponential growth in the static power consumption of transistors due to quantum mechanical tunneling through an ever-thinner SiO2 gate dielectric. This has spurred an intensive effort to find an alternative to SiO2 with a higher dielectric constant (K) to temper this exploding power consumption. This article reviews the high-K materials revolution that is enabling Moore's law to continue beyond SiO2.

Increasing demand for energy, diminishing stocks of oil and natural gas, and the public's desire to enhance environmental quality, particularly by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, all point to the need for improved materials. For example, generating electricity from the most abundant fossil fuel, coal, efficiently and with no environmental damage, presents notable challenges to develop higher performance materials. Technologies exist to transform one fossil fuel to other uses, such as coal to a gas or liquid. New materials that increase the efficiency of the transformation and lower its cost would provide valuable flexibility. Materials should be evaluated in terms of their entire life-cycle in order to discern which will make the greatest contribution. Because society has many pressing needs, both commercial value and contribution to fundamental materials science should guide priorities in materials research.

Controlled binding and assembly of peptides onto inorganic substrates is at the core of bionanotechnology and biological-materials engineering. Peptides offer several unique advantages for developing future inorganic materials and systems. First, engineered polypeptides can molecularly recognize inorganic surfaces that are distinguishable by shape, crystallography, mineralogy, and chemistry. Second, polypeptides are capable of self-assembly on specific material surfaces leading to addressable molecular architectures. Finally, genetically engineered peptides offer multiple strategies for their functional modification. In this article, we summarize the details and mechanisms involved in combinatorial-polypeptide sequence selection and inorganic-material recognition and affinity, and outline experimental and theoretical approaches and concepts that will help advance this emerging field.

Temperature is one of the most important factors affecting the state and behavior of materials. In situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful tool for understanding such temperature effects, and recently in situ heating TEM has made significant progress in terms of temperature available and resolution attained. This article briefly describes newly developed specimen-heating holders, which are useful in carrying out in situ heating TEM experiments. It then focuses on three main applications of these specimen holders: solid–solid reactions, solid–liquid reactions (including highresolution observation of a solid–liquid interface, size dependence of the melting temperatures of one-, two- and three-dimensionally reduced systems, size dependence of the contact angle of fine metal liquid, and wetting of Si with liquid Au or Al) and solid–gas reactions. These results illustrate the benefit of in situ heating TEM for providing fundamental information on temperature effects on materials.

With the emergence and evolution of serial sectioning techniques that allow for three-dimensional data collection and the continuing increase in computational power, it is now possible to analyze and compute the evolution of three-dimensional nano- and microstructures. Structures can be accurately characterized, and it is possible to correlate processing paths with materials properties with great precision. Examples of the analysis and computations of the evolution of three-dimensional microstructures are discussed. The focus is on experiments that use serial sectioning methods to determine three-dimensional structure and on phase-field simulations of microstructural evolution that employ experimental three-dimensional data as initial conditions.

This article introduces and considers the fundamental understanding of ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) functioning as electroactive actuators and sensors. IPMCs consist of ion-exchange polymers acting as base materials and metal layers functioning as electrodes. The actuation and sensing abilities of IPMCs are dependent upon the components of ion-exchange polymers (ionic groups and cations) and electrode materials. In order to improve the bending and sensing performance of the IPMCs, an integral, two-step electroplating technique and a requisite dispersion agent are used during fabrication. Electroding materials also play a key role in determining the properties of IPMCs, and numerous methods in electroding have been tried, making use of various metals, carbon nanotubes, and composites. So far, IPMCs have been adapted as robotic actuators, artificial muscles, and electrical sensors. In the future, it is expected that IPMCs will broadly spread their roles from small-sized biomedical devices to large-scale actuators for aerospace as well as many industrial applications.

Directly seeing into a moving contact is a powerful approach to understanding how solid lubricants develop low-friction, long-lived interfaces. In this article, we present optical microscopy and spectroscopy approaches that can be integrated with friction monitoring instrumentation to provide real-time, in situ evaluation of solid lubrication phenomena. Importantly, these tools allow direct correlation of common tribological events (such as variations in friction and wear) with the responsible sliding-induced mechanical and chemical phenomena. We demonstrate the utility of in situ approaches with applications to a variety of thin-film solid lubricants.

Nanotechnology is revolutionizing the way that sensing, electronic, optical, and medical devices are designed because the properties of nanostructures are distinct from their bulk-material counterparts. The incorporation of nanomaterials into devices and sensors to exploit their unique properties has been a challenge because they must be functionalized in a manner that does not destroy their properties. Biological macromolecules can non-covalently or covalently bind to nanomaterials, resulting in the formation of biofunctionalized nanoparticles. These biofunctionalized nanoparticles are exemplified by the peptide-mediated suspension of carbon nanotubes in solution and the templating of bimetallic nanoparticles using multifunctional peptides.

Fibrous media in the form of nonwoven filters have been used extensively in water treatment as pre-filters or to support the medium that does the separation. Nonwoven media are composed of randomly oriented micron-size fibers and provide a one step separation as a substitute for conventional processes comprising chemical addition, flocculation, sedimentation, and sand filtration. At present the use of nonwoven filter media is limited to pre-filters and is not used further downstream as high performance filters. However it is expected that by reducing the fiber size in the nanometer range, higher filtration efficiency can be achieved. With the advent of nanotechnology, the ease of producing high quality nano scaled fibers is now a reality. Recent advancements in nanofibrous media through surface modifications have shown that nonwoven media can be used beyond the prefilter stage. Furthermore the pore size of the filter media can be controlled through modification of fiber size and thickness of membranes. These nanofibrous membranes possess high surface area and large porosity leading to high flux, low pressure membranes. This article highlights important opportunities and challenges associated with developing nanofibrous media for water treatment. In addition, we have attempted to capture a snapshot of this rapidly developing new area of fibrous media for water treatment for the benefit of the wider membrane community.

There is a wide array of technologically significant materials whose response to electric and magnetic fields can make or break their utility for specific applications. Often, these electrical and magnetic properties are determined by nanoscale features that can be most effectively understood through electron microscopy studies. Here, we present an overview of the capabilities for transmission electron microscopy for uncovering information about electric and magnetic properties of materials in the context of operational devices. When devices are operated during microscope observations, a wealth of information is available about dynamics, including metastable and transitional states. Additionally, because the imaging beam is electrically charged, it can directly capture information about the electric and magnetic fields in and around devices of interest. This is perhaps most relevant to the growing areas of nanomaterials and nanodevice research. Several specific examples are presented of materials systems that have been explored with these techniques. We also provide a view of the future directions for research.

Phase-change random-access memory (PCRAM) is a promising technology for future nonvolatile storage with the added potential for possible impact on dynamic random-access memory technologies. To be successful, however, PCRAM must be able to scale to dimensions on the order of a few tens of nanometers, considering the increasingly tiny memory cells that are projected for future technology nodes. The experiments discussed in this article directly address these scaling properties, examining both the materials themselves and the operation of nanoscale devices. One series of experiments is time-resolved x-ray diffraction studies of ultrathin films and nanostructures. Electron-beam lithography was applied to pattern thin films into nanostructures with dimensions down to 20 nm. The article also includes descriptions of prototype PCRAM devices, successfully fabricated and tested down to phase-change material cross sections of 3 nm × 20 nm. The measurements provide a clear demonstration of the excellent scaling potential offered by this technology.

A sustainable global energy system requires a transition away from energy sources with high greenhouse emissions. Vast energy resources are available to meet our needs, and technology pathways for making this transition exist. Lowering the cost and increasing the reliability and quality of energy from sustainable energy sources will facilitate this transition. Changing the world's energy systems is a huge challenge, but it is one that can be undertaken now with improvements in energy efficiency and with continuing deployment of a variety of technologies. Numerous opportunities exist for research in material sciences to contribute to this global-scale challenge.

The wettability of several superhydrophobic surfaces that were prepared recently by simple, mostly single-step methods is described and compared with the wettability of surfaces that are less hydrophobic. We explain why two length scales of topography can be important for controlling the hydrophobicity of some surfaces (the lotus effect). Contact-angle hysteresis (difference between the advancing, θA, and receding, θR, contact angles) is discussed and explained, particularly with regard to its contribution to water repellency. Perfect hydrophobicity (θA/θR = 180°/180°) and a method for distinguishing perfectly hydrophobic surfaces from those that are almost perfectly hydrophobic are described and discussed. The Wenzel and Cassie theories, both of which involve analysis of interfacial (solid/liquid) areas and not contact lines, are criticized. Each of these related topics is addressed from the perspective of the three-phase (solid/liquid/vapor) contact line and its dynamics. The energy barriers for movement of the three-phase contact line from one metastable state to another control contact-angle hysteresis and, thus, water repellency.

A new class of artificially structured materials called metamaterials makes it possible to achieve electromagnetic properties that do not exist in nature. In this article, we review the recent progress made in the area of optical metamaterials, specifically artificial magnetism and negative-index metamaterials. It was predicted that nanostructured metamaterials could provide magnetic responses and negative refractive indexes at optical frequencies. To date, optical metamagnetics have been fabricated to demonstrate magnetic responses in the infrared range and across the entire visible spectrum. Metamaterials showing negative refractive indexes, also called negative-index materials (NIMs), have also been demonstrated in the infrared range and at the border with the visible spectral range. Additionally, we report the results of a sample that displays NIM behavior for red light at a wavelength of 710 nm and another sample that displays double-negative NIM behavior at 725 nm. Both observations represent the shortest wavelengths so far at which NIM behavior has been observed for light. We also discuss the fabrication challenges and the impact of fabrication limitations, specifically the effect of surface roughness of the fabricated structures, on the optical properties of the metamaterials.

Organic solar cells, based on polymer/fullerene-blend films, are advancing rapidly toward commercial viability. In this article, we review recent progress on two issues critical for technological applications: device photovoltaic efficiencies and processing technologies for high-throughput production. In terms of device efficiencies, we consider advances in low-bandgap polymers, film morphology, and device structure aimed at increasing efficiencies beyond 5%. We then review recent progress in developing high-throughput, solution-printing-based processes for low-cost device fabrication.

Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) based on conventional semiconductors such as Si or GaAs have played a pivotal role in fundamental science and technology. The high mobilities achieved in 2DEGs enabled the discovery of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects and are exploited in high-electron-mobility transistors. Recent work has shown that 2DEGs can also exist at oxide interfaces. These electron gases typically result from reconstruction of the complex electronic structure of the oxides, so that the electronic behavior of the interfaces can differ from the behavior of the bulk. Reports on magnetism and superconductivity in oxide 2DEGs illustrate their capability to encompass phenomena not shown by interfaces in conventional semiconductors. This article reviews the status and prospects of oxide 2DEGs.

Imprint lithography has a remarkable patterning resolution of less than 5 nm, and it is simultaneously capable of patterning over large areas with long-range order. This combination enables a broad range of potential applications including terabit-density magnetic storage, CMOS integrated circuits, and nanowire molecular memory. This article provides a review of the status of imprint lithography for nanoscale manufacturing. First, representative nanoscale devices and their manufacturing requirements are reviewed, along with key patterning challenges that have to be overcome to enable these nanoscale applications. Two classes of top–down nanopatterning techniques, namely, photon-based lithography and proximity mechanical nanopatterning (including imprint lithography), are described, followed by the three primary building blocks of imprint lithography: imprint masks, tools, and materials. Theresults of the lithography process are detailed in terms of process data such as long-range order in the placement and size of the nanostructures, process throughput, and overall cost considerations.

Organic field-effect transistors (FETs) are currently the focus of significant academic research and industrial development interest, as they potentially offer unique advantages over their inorganic counterparts in terms of cost reductions, compatibility with low-temperature and printing-based manufacturing, and potentially even performance. The first generation of products incorporating organic FETs is presently being introduced to the market. This article provides an overview of strategies for achieving high field-effect mobilities in solution-processed organic semiconductor films. We provide an assessment of materials challenges to meet performance and reliability requirements for a range of display and circuit applications and present an overview of state-of-the-art application demonstrations in active-matrix addressing of flexible eletrophoretic, organic light-emitting diode, and liquid-crystal displays, as well as radio-frequency identification tagging. We discuss how the unique functional properties of organic semiconductors, which allow comparatively easy integration of information processing, information storage, light emission, and light detection functions, might enable multifunctional applications that are not easy to create with other material systems.

TBP-1 is a 12-amino-acid peptide aptamer that has been isolated as a Ti binder using a peptide-phage system. Subsequent analyses have shown that TBP1 also binds Si and Ag, and has the ability to enhance the formation of titania and silica as well as nanoparticles of Ag. TBP-1 is thus a bifunctional peptide: a binder that also acts as a mediator of mineralization. These two functions can be grafted onto heterologous molecules. For instance, mutational analysis of the TBP-1 revealed that its N -terminal hexapeptide, RKLPDA (minTBP-1), is sufficient for Ti binding. When the surface of ferritin, a nano-sized spherical cargo protein, was ornamented with minTBP-1 either genetically or chemically, the resultant modified ferritin acquired the ability to bind Ti and mediate mineralization. By alternately applying the binding and mineralization activities of the minTBP-1-modified nanocage, we were able to construct, in stepwise fashion, multilayer structures composed of titania (or silica) and nanocages. We named this process the biomimetic layer-by-layer (BioLBL) method. By coupling BioLBL with a conventional top-down lithographic method, in aqua structuralization of a three-dimensional (3D) configuration of nanomolecules was realized. As shown in this article, binding and mineralization activities of peptide aptamers, when they are combined with nanostructured materials, play active roles in manufacturing nanostrucutre in aqua.

Synchrotron x-ray microtomography is a characterization technique increasingly used to obtain 3D images of the interior of optically opaque materials with a spatial resolution in the micrometer range. As a nondestructive technique, it enables the monitoring of microstructural evolution during in situ experiments. In this article, examples from three different fields of metals research illustrate the contribution of x-ray tomography data to modeling: deformation of cellular materials, metal solidification, and fatigue crack growth in Al alloys. Conventionally, tomography probes the 3D distribution of the x-ray attenuation coefficient within a sample. However, this technique is also being extended to determine the local crystallographic orientation in the bulk of materials (diffraction contrast tomography), a key issue for the modeling of microstructure in metals.
