The rings studied in this paper were first constructed in connexion with the problem (Proposition 1) of extending a place from an integral domain to its field of fractions. They provide (Proposition 3) a series of examples of places not so extendable, generalizing an example implicit in the work of Samuel(3); and by the use of ultraproducts they show that such extendability is (in certain precise sense) not an elementary property (Proposition 4). On the other hand they have some unexpected properties, especially in connexion with the relation 1/y0 + … + 1/yr = 1, and they have very small automorphism groups (Proposition 2 and Corollaries); and they are not unique factorization rings (Proposition 5), though they are integrally closed (Proposition 6).

Let G be an arbitrary group and Zn(G) denote the group algebra of G over the integers modulo n. If δi(G) denotes ith power of the augmentation ideal δ(G) of Zn(G), then

is easily seen to be a normal subgroup of G. It is denoted by Di, n(G) and is called ith dimension subgroup of G modulo n. It can be shown that these dimension subgroups are determined by the dimension subgroups modulo a power of a prime p. Hence we shall restrict our attention to these dimension subgroups.

1. Introduction. The wreath product A wr B of a group A by a group B is nilpotent if and only if A is a nilpotent p-group of finite exponent and B is a finite p-group for the same prime p (Baumslag (1)). When A is an Abelian p-group of exponent pk, and B is the direct product of cyclic groups of orders pβ1, …, pβn and β1 ≥ β2 ≥ …, ≥ βn, then Liebeck has shown that the nilpotency class c of A wr B is

Fröhlich(1) has obtained certain invariants for modules over commutative separable orders over dedekind domains, whose values are ideals in the dedekind domain. In two particular applications he has shown that these invariants supply a criterion for a module over a given order to be projective ((1), Theorem 4), and another one for a fractional ideal to be invertible ((1), Theorem 5).

This note exhibits an infinite independent set of laws for monoids (viz. (xpyp)2 = (ypxp)2, p prime) and a variety of groups defined by one law (which is x2y2 = y2x2) such that the smallest containing variety of monoids is not finitely definable.

Let D be an integral domain with identity. In (3), Cohn has shown that if D is a Schreier ring, then D can be inertly embedded in a pre-Bezout domain B(D), which Cohn calls the pre-Bezout hull of D. Further, D is an HCF-ring if and only if B(D) is a Bezout domain, and D is a UFD if and only if B(D) is a PID. Using a modification of Cohn's techniques, Samuel in (8) has shown that a Krull domain can be inertly embedded in a Dedekind domain. In this paper, we show that these embedding theorems are also obtained by considering the embedding of a v-ring in its Kronecker function ring with respect to the v-operation. To wit, if D is a v-ring and if Dv is the Kronecker function ring of D with respect to the v-operation, then Dv is a Bezout domain, and we show that D is inertly embedded in Dv if an only if D is an HCF-ring. Moreover, D is a UFD if and only if Dv is a PID, and if D is a Krull domain, D is inertly embedded (in Samuel's sense) in Dv, a Dedekind domain.

1. Introduction. Let A[λ] be the irreducible invariant matrix of a general matrix of order n × n, corresponding to a partition (λ) = (λ1, λ2, …, λr) of some integer m. The problem to be discussed here is that of determining the canonical form of A[λ] when that of A is known.

This note is concerned with infinite sequences whose terms are chosen from a finite set of symbols. A segment of such a sequence is a set of one or more consecutive terms, and a repetition is a pair of finite segments that are adjacent and identical. A non-repetitive sequence is one that contains no repetitions.

From a commutative ring A, Lazard(8) has made a flat injective epimorphism: A → B of commutative rings, such that if A → C is another flat injective epimorphism of commutative rings, then there is one and only one ring morphism: B → C such that the diagram

commutes; and he shows too that B → C is a flat injective epimorphism. The main aim of the present paper is to make a similar object for not necessarily commutative rings: this is achieved thanks to the notion of an A-prering, intermediate between that of an A-bimodule and that of an A-ring. In passing, prerings are also used to construct a kind of non-commutative ring of fractions.

We introduce and compare four procedures for defining the order-continuity of a function from one topological ordered space into another, where each reduces to the usual conception when the orderings of the two spaces are trivial. Chiefly for the purposes of this comparison, we use the idea of an ‘order-connected’ space, and in the course of investigating under which types of order-continuous functions this property is preserved, we are helped in assessing their relative importance.

Let K be a commutative field and let V be an n-dimensional vector space over K. We denote by L(V) the ring of all K-linear endomorphisms of V into itself. A subring of L(V) is always assumed to contain the unit element of L(V), but it need not be a vector subspace of the K-algebra L(V). Suppose now that A is a subring of L(V). Then we may consider L(V) as a left or a right A-module. We may also consider V as a left A-module, i.e. if x ∈ V and if f ∈ A then we get the image element f(x) in V. If we choose a basis for V over K then we get the associated matrix representation of L(V). So in this way L(V) is identified with the full matrix ring Mn(K), and in this way the study of subrings of L(V) can be reduced to the study of subrings of Mn(K).

1. Introduction. Let Ω be a non-singular quadric in an n-dimensional projective space PG(n, K) whose coordinate field is K. With respect to Ω the linear subspaces of PG(n, K) fall into various types: the subspaces of a given type each have the same dimension and the same geometrical kind of quadric section with Ω. Each element of the collineation group Γ preserving Ω takes a subspace into one of the same type, but Γ may divide the subspaces of a given type into several transitivity classes or orbits.

Braid groups on the plane were denned by Artin(1) in 1925. More recently Fox(8) defined braid groups on arbitrary topological spaces, the situation being particularly interesting if the space is a 2-manifold. Presentations of the braid groups on R2, S2 and P2 can be found in (2), (6) and (13) respectively, and some general results on braid groups of compact 2-manifolds can be found in (7). In section 1 of this paper, we give finite presentations for the braid groups on all closed 2-manifolds except S2 and P2.

0. Introduction. An immersion f of one space X in another Y is a continuous map which is locally an embedding; that is, for any x ∈ X there is a neighbourhood N(x) of x such that f|N(x) is an embedding. Thus the image of an immersion may intersect itself, but it can contain no worse singularities. For example, the well-known model of the Klein Bottle is the image of an immersion into ordinary 3-space; the locus of points of self intersection is a circle, where two distinct circles in the Klein Bottle have their images. This paper obtains a sufficient condition for a map of PL manifolds to be deformable into a PL immersion.

The main purpose of this paper is to describe the construction of an incidence table for the Hughes plane of order q2. To do this it is necessary first to construct a table of the same pattern for the Galois plane, and this requires the expression in terms of explicit matrices of the Singer cyclic group of the plane as the composition of cyclic groups of orders q2 + q + 1 and q2 − q + 1. The two tables constructed have some combinatorial properties of possible interest.

In the Galois plane of order q2 there are two types of polarities, one with q2 + 1 singular points on a conic, and the other with q3 + 1 singular points on the Hermitian analogue of a conic. Correspondingly in the Hughes plane there are polarities with ½(q3 + q + 2) and with ½(q3 + 2q2 − q + 2) singular points.

The paper concludes with the complete incidence table for the Hughes plane of order 25, together with the data necessary for its construction.

The Hughes plane and some of its properties are described in Hughes(1), Zappa(2), Rosati(3) and Ostrom(4). The property which enables the Hughes plane to be most easily constructed from the corresponding Galois plane, and which will be used in this paper, is to be found in Room (5).

By a multi-valued map from a space X to a space Y we mean a map which assigns to each point x in X a non-empty subset F(x) of Y. When X = Y, a point x in X is a fized point for F if x is in F(x).

1. Introduction. The group U(H) of unitary transformations of a complex Hilbert space H, endowed with its strong operator topology, is of interest in the study of unitary representations of a topological group. The unitary transformations of H induce a group U(Ĥ) of transformations of the associated projective space Ĥ. The projective unitary group U(Ĥ) with its strong operator topology is used in the study of projective (ray) representations. U(Ĥ) is, as a group, the quotient of U(H) by the subgroup S1 of scalar multiples of the identity. In this paper we prove that the strong operator toplogy of U(Ĥ) is in fact the quotient of the strong operator topology on U(H). This is related to the fact that U(H) is a principal bundle over U(Ĥ) with fibre S.

The aim of this paper is to reformulate the work of Massey(6), and Spanier(9, 10), on higher order cohomology operations, in terms of vector bundles in such a way as to produce geometrically some higher order operations in K-theory, which we will call Massey products.
